I have been driving for 45 years! Passed my test first time in my home town of Birkenhead in 1976. I now live in Australia - when I first arrived in 1996, I had to take a driving test here - I went for the easy option and took it in an automatic but I still managed to fail lol. I passed a week later but I had obviously picked up a few bad habits in 20 years of driving. Anyway, moving on another 25 years, I have been watching this channel for tips so that I can teach my daughter to drive a manual. I have to say it is by far the best driving instruction channel on RUclips! Richard’s instructions have been so helpful and earned me extra brownie points with my daughter who was getting nowhere with a professional instructor but is coming on in leaps and bounds under “my” instruction. The credit really should go to you Rich. As a bonus, I have even improved my own driving thanks to you. You are a very talented teacher and it is obvious that you also know a lot about cars and mechanics in general. I bet you play a mean guitar too! You really should have your own TV program in the UK. Thank you. This video describes well my struggles with moving off. That delay between pressing the gas and the revs going up always throws me off especially on uphill roads. Sometimes that delay is long enough for the car to start rolling back so I end up lifting the clutch with barely any revs which just leads me to stalling the car.
The only problem with leaving your heel in that position, is that you introduce subtle stress to the inside of the knee, if you drive for long periods.
I wish my instructor got me accustomed to the gas and break before actually driving, I think that wouldve helped me not be a total wreck those first few lessons lol
4:50 in and already learnt a fair amount. I tried driving my friends car and went foot straight up position and didnt know how the rpm would shoot up... Now i know how to avoid that :)
Hi in one of his earlier videos, he has a useful tip: don't have your foot on the brake as you go over the speed breaker. Brake to slow down before you reach the speed breaker, and then lift your foot off the brake when go over it. Less bumpy that way.

I can't drive yet (I'm 16 soon), but I already have my eye on a car (VW Polo 1.2). I've sat in it a few times and moved it forwards and backwards again (under the watchful eye of my dad), not fast enough to even come off the clutch completely, but it's still fun! This video helped a lot, especially as, according to my dad (I'll take his word for it, but you can verity this if you want) that smaller engines tend to keep revving up more easily the longer you hold the accelerator down at the same point.
Ive got a polo 1.2 from 2004. Get it its a really good car. And you can pretend your a racecar driver whilst going the speed limit. Just get a manual tho

Hi Richard. Great video, thank you. At 8:48 you chose to indicate right as you passed the cyclist - why is this? In a video a long while back, you explained that there is no need to signal right in this type of situation. Also, as there was an opening on the right immediately afterwards, may it have been potentially considered miscommunication towards other road users?
There was a pedestrian, and also possibly a car behind (we couldn't see). You should certainly indicate when overtaking if another road user could benefit.
Richard has explained in previous videos that this signal is not needed; it is clear from Richard's road positioning and movement that his intention is to overtake the cyclist and therefore the signal is unnecessary. Following from what you've mentioned about a car possibly being behind (that we couldn't see) - the driver of this car may think, due to the signal, that Richard's intention is to turn right as there was an imminent turning on the right; this is misleading and likely confusing.

The first thought for any driver on this rural lane would be that he was overtaking or otherwise dealing with a hazard. A signal in this situation can also alert the driver behind that there is a hazard ahead. If someone can benefit from a signal, put it on. It costs nothing.
To be honest I can't remember why, I filmed this in the middle of January. But you're right, signal to pass a cyclist only if you think it will help someone.
Just like any automatic Except don't use the throttle to hold you still on hills for more than a few seconds.. use the brakes instead (allowing the clutch to disengage and not wear/get warm). Also if you are hit from behind it is safer (less likely to be pushed into traffic).
@@spiritualak5147 the average person wont be able to tell the difference between a cable and dbw car.. it's just small differences.. cable throttles are usually more responsive but can be more jerky coming on and off throttle at low rpm.
The throttle/accelerator/gas pedal is not just to speed up, it is also to slow down - using engine braking. Master it, and ride smooth. Expectations of others during my first time rolling the car: "oh sh*t, i'm going to die." *revs all the way to 5000 and over* Reality: "this is awesome - the more I feather the gas, the smoother it is .. this is huge!" *revs a little over 1800*
engines and transmissions are expensive, brakes aren't... to slow down, ur better off braking in neutral than engine braking.... at least for the sake of longevity. then again, i live in North America so driving here is a lot different and distances are constant and longer :(
Engine braking is something I would like to get better at. Still haven't figured out how much I need to add gas when downshifting, it's either too much or too little. I need to find a place where there's no traffic and practice.

@@martindammable i think it depends on a car.. my small engined car is tough, the engine drops revs fast, the pedals are not laid out so.. i can do revmatches in higher gears, but i just forgot it. not worth damaging the clutch.. just slow down more, slip the clutch, no gas is needed
If you want to do it you should, it's not about when you do things. If you want to learn something you should and learning later doesn't get in the way, it just means you're wiser and probably safer.

Question about the swivelling of the foot w/ heel planted from gas to brake: I was told while learning a long time ago that "lifting" is better than swivelling, because with swivelling, in an emergency stop situation, you might knock the side of the brake pedal (because you didn't lever your foot high enough). Your thoughts on this please?
Swiveling is better if you can do it as there are less variables of position therefore you get better and quicker at judging the break. You learn how much to lift your foot. In an emergency situation most people lift their foot automatically anyway to stomp on the brake out of panic. Swiveling is more for comfort and fine control.

Kept breaking checking my frien when I drove his car and went past the speed limit a little bc he actually listened to me when I asked him to let me drive his car but I actually turn pretty good so if I went a little fast I had good control of the car so no one was hurt and nothing was damaged and his car was on sports mode so when I barely pressed it too hard and it would send us
Maintaining is at an exact point is very challenging especially for a new driver. I usually just ask between 1000 and 2000 revs, a little bit more is OK.
It still drives like it did when it was new. Obviously have replaced quite a few parts in those miles but far cheaper than buying a new car every 50-80k miles.
Great video as usual, big fan of this channel! Question about the swivelling: can this technique be applied as well when the gas pedal lever comes from below instead of above? I feel I don't have that much control if I press it so close to the level itself instead of pressing on the top of the pedal (further away for the level point). I hope I explained myself correctly.
My instructor's throttle pedal is pretty responsive and easy, his gas just trips me up so I'm here lol. For some reason I can't keep the revs at 2000. It's either a tiny climb or continuously climbing.
Passed In a diesel not so long ago and having a nightmare in a petrol car I’ve just got loool feel like I’m going back to basics , pulling off is fine as I have plenty time with the hand break etc it’s more at junctions I’m struggling and roundabouts with finding the bite quickly I find I’m over reving as I’m panicking I’m going to stall 😩
@@alandoangatiah5751 If you have accurate knowledge about the internals of a car then it's an easy task to figure out and be good at driving .I think that's how these guys came to know this advanced stuff like foot positions and so on. Plus experience is also a key and tbh you don't need to watch a bunch of how to drive vids, if you experiment yourself you'll be just as good watching these videos will make it like a task you gotta complete and it won't be fun anymore. So figuring out yourself is the way
Mr Fanders Is it bad practice if you lift the clutch to the bite point then once the car starts moving give it a bit of gas or is the same as giving a bit of gas then bite point method?

Ps my Mazda is the same it’s kinda annoying. Just the slightest push on the pedal and it’s freakin roarin! Hard to tell if I’m pressing it or not until I hear my engine or see my rpms climb like crazy or both. I have to drive in silence to hear my engine if I’m not wanting to watch my speedometer.

My jazz rs gk5 harassing me because this car so hard to keep certain rpm by steady gas.its way too sensitive for honda's electronic gas pedal. Easily over-rev to 2 to 2500 rpm even give only coin thickness of steady gas,i think its too much for get the car start to move normally. Eventually i found a effective and easier way to due with ,by slightly bliping the throttle to keep a low rpm start the car ,that helps me a lot to get car started smoothly at 1-1200rpm no matter during heavy traffic or steep inclined roads in hk.

This is difficult to explain with a comment on RUclips. If the engine revs up when the clutch is up and the car doesn't accelerate, that's a sign that the clutch is knackered. Different for different people, if you mean floor mounted pedals, I use them the same as top mounted pedals as I don't feel comfortable with my whole foot over the pedal.
The DVSA have said they will contact everyone who has a test affected by lockdown. However it may take them a while, they have a lot of people to contact. Keep an eye on your emails.
I drive a 1992 Toyota Hilux 3L engine. My vehicle makes too much rev noise when going up a hill in first gear in traffic. Note: I use crutch and gas to break and move forward. Why could that be?
Step 1: don't have small feet! I am a size 6, so my heel can't reach the floor, at least not, if i don't want to risk it slipping off the gas pedal, let alone be on it's side.
you can perhaps buy aftermarket pedal extensions... but they are illegal in some places and can be dangerous if made or installed cheaply... if you have the means, you can also buy and install a new adjustable pedal assembly used for track cars.. its a bit pricey though, for a Wilwood assembly itll cost u well over 500gbp to install them professionally etc... good luck with ur driving!
It can do, although the difference between a 2013 Fiesta and a 2014 fiesta wouldn’t be noticeable for example, However the difference between a 2001 fiesta and a 2014 one may be bigger
@@DJay-cm5hu usually insurance is cheaper for newer cars as they are safer. I’d say anything from 2004 and newer is probably your best bet for cheaper insurance and a safe car
Because it would require more effort and people will be less likely to buy it. I've driven a car with a stiff gas pedal, it wasn't very nice. You may mean why is it so sensitive? That's just the mechanical limitation of fuel, air and spark to propel a car. A tiny bit more gas makes a big difference to the power. Electric cars solve this problem I believe.
@@ConquerDriving oh okay, yeah basically what i meant was. we are told to press the gas pedal about the thickness of a pound coin, which is obviously tiny. but i guess it’s just down to practice! i need more time in my car to listen to the engine, as i was reving it, the needle on the speedometer moved very quickly😅like a race car, but as i say i just need more practice and experience. also your videos have helped a tremendous amount so thank you :)
For reference he isn't all that large of a human, he once said he weighs around 60-65 kg so i don't think he's super tall => Shoe size wouldn't be super big

I would argue that I'm giving new drivers who struggle to control the gas help and understanding. Question about the swivelling of the foot w/ heel planted from gas to brake: I was told while learning a long time ago that "lifting" is better than swivelling, because with swivelling, in an emergency stop situation, you might knock the side of the brake pedal (because you didn't lever your foot high enough). Your thoughts on this please?
Swiveling is better if you can do it as there are less variables of position therefore you get better and quicker at judging the break. You learn how much to lift your foot. In an emergency situation most people lift their foot automatically anyway to stomp on the brake out of panic. Swiveling is more for comfort and fine control.

It's best to rest your feet where they will be ready to use the pedals. In some cars that's easier than others.
Kept breaking checking my frien when I drove his car and went past the speed limit a little bc he actually listened to me when I asked him to let me drive his car but I actually turn pretty good so if I went a little fast I had good control of the car so no one was hurt and nothing was damaged and his car was on sports mode so when I barely pressed it too hard and it would send us

My instructor says, try to maintain the RPM at 1500, but I over rev it to 2000, when I reduced it, the meter went down to 1000 instead.
Maintaining is at an exact point is very challenging especially for a new driver. I usually just ask between 1000 and 2000 revs, a little bit more is OK.

It still drives like it did when it was new. Obviously have replaced quite a few parts in those miles but far cheaper than buying a new car every 50-80k miles.

Question about the swivelling: can this technique be applied as well when the gas pedal lever comes from below instead of above? I feel I don't have that much control if I press it so close to the level itself instead of pressing on the top of the pedal (further away for the level point). I hope I explained myself correctly.

My instructor's throttle pedal is pretty responsive and easy, his gas just trips me up so I'm here lol. For some reason I can't keep the revs at 2000. It's either a tiny climb or continuously climbing.
As I understand it, your car accelerate better when the revs are in the peak torque band. Get to know what’s your cars figures are and practice.

Passed In a diesel not so long ago and having a nightmare in a petrol car I’ve just got loool feel like I’m going back to basics , pulling off is fine as I have plenty time with the hand break etc it’s more at junctions I’m struggling and roundabouts with finding the bite quickly I find I’m over reving as I’m panicking I’m going to stall 😩

@@alandoangatiah5751 If you have accurate knowledge about the internals of a car then it's an easy task to figure out and be good at driving .I think that's how these guys came to know this advanced stuff like foot positions and so on. Plus experience is also a key and tbh you don't need to watch a bunch of how to drive vids, if you experiment yourself you'll be just as good watching these videos will make it like a task you gotta complete and it won't be fun anymore. So figuring out yourself is the way

Is it bad practice if you lift the clutch to the bite point then once the car starts moving give it a bit of gas or is the same as giving a bit of gas then bite point method?
It's not bad practise, I do this sometimes, but it's best to have the ability to do gas first as some cars need you to do this.
@@ConquerDriving okay thanks I'll try my best cause I'm struggling with the gas pedal I always give to much gas and when I hear the car sound is too loud it scares me then I press it just a tiny bit cause at time it might feel like you aren't pressing it at all so that's why sometimes I over accelerate without being aware

Vibrations are the only other thing, it will be hard to learn in such a car.
Ps my Mazda is the same it’s kinda annoying. Just the slightest push on the pedal and it’s freakin roarin! Hard to tell if I’m pressing it or not until I hear my engine or see my rpms climb like crazy or both. I have to drive in silence to hear my engine if I’m not wanting to watch my speedometer.
I've driven an older Mazda 2 with a gas pedal that was difficult to use. It would rev suddenly with only a small press.

Sounds about right, you sre quite tall and I've had shorter people have the seat almost all the way back and my Leon is very similar to a Jetta.
My jazz rs gk5 harassing me because this car so hard to keep certain rpm by steady gas.its way too sensitive for honda's electronic gas pedal. Easily over-rev to 2 to 2500 rpm even give only coin thickness of steady gas,i think its too much for get the car start to move normally. Eventually i found a effective and easier way to due with ,by slightly bliping the throttle to keep a low rpm start the car ,that helps me a lot to get car started smoothly at 1-1200rpm no matter during heavy traffic or steep inclined roads in hk.
That's all part of driving manual cars, you have to find ways round the awkward ones. If it works then it's all good.

This is difficult to explain with a comment on RUclips. If the engine revs up when the clutch is up and the car doesn't accelerate, that's a sign that the clutch is knackered. Different for different people, if you mean floor mounted pedals, I use them the same as top mounted pedals as I don't feel comfortable with my whole foot over the pedal.

I drive a 1992 Toyota Hilux 3L engine.
My vehicle makes too much rev noise when going up a hill in first gear in traffic.
Note: I use crutch and gas to break and move forward.
Why could that be?
It's hard to say what's happening without being there. Engines are generally loud when revved in 1st gear uphill so it may be normal.
Step 1: don't have small feet! I am a size 6, so my heel can't reach the floor, at least not, if i don't want to risk it slipping off the gas pedal, let alone be on it's side.
you can perhaps buy aftermarket pedal extensions... but they are illegal in some places and can be dangerous if made or installed cheaply... if you have the means, you can also buy and install a new adjustable pedal assembly used for track cars.. its a bit pricey though, for a Wilwood assembly itll cost u well over 500gbp to install them professionally etc... good luck with ur driving!

Does the year of your car impact insurance
It can do, although the difference between a 2013 Fiesta and a 2014 fiesta wouldn’t be noticeable for example, However the difference between a 2001 fiesta and a 2014 one may be bigger

@@DJay-cm5hu usually insurance is cheaper for newer cars as they are safer. I’d say anything from 2004 and newer is probably your best bet for cheaper insurance and a safe car

Because it would require more effort and people will be less likely to buy it. I've driven a car with a stiff gas pedal, it wasn't very nice. You may mean why is it so sensitive? That's just the mechanical limitation of fuel, air and spark to propel a car. A tiny bit more gas makes a big difference to the power. Electric cars solve this problem I believe.
@@ConquerDriving oh okay, yeah basically what i meant was. we are told to press the gas pedal about the thickness of a pound coin, which is obviously tiny. but i guess it’s just down to practice! i need more time in my car to listen to the engine, as i was reving it, the needle on the speedometer moved very quickly😅like a race car, but as i say i just need more practice and experience. also your videos have helped a tremendous amount so thank you :)

For reference he isn't all that large of a human, he once said he weighs around 60-65 kg so i don't think he's super tall

I would argue that I'm giving new drivers who struggle to control the gas help and understanding. People who would find this video useful are likely to be beginners or people struggling with control, not test ready people who already have a feel for the pedal and no longer need my complicated or rather should I say detailed guide.
