- You Have No Enemies Explained A Vinland Saga Analysis. In this video essay, we will analyze the new meme trend "You Have No Enemies". We will explore how the roots of this saying can be found in Christianity. According to Thors, to be a "true warrior", and to "have no enemies", is to practice what Wilibald and Prince Canute define as "true love". This definition is to love unconditionally as Christ has done.

"I have no enemies" is not cowardice, its the highest form of bravery. What is bravery? It's doing what is not easy to do, for the sake of it being the right thing to do. When has choosing to go against our animal instincts of self preservation ever been the easier option when faced with hostility? Better question, when has choosing to indulge our impulses ever been difficult? Thors lived the last half of his life choosing to do what is difficult, for the sake of what is right. He defied his country, willingly becoming an enemy of the Jormsviking. He sacrificed his life so his village could live. Vinland Saga is a masterclass in Virtue and should be studied in the way you did in this video. Great Work friend.
I could not have said it better my self!
“You have no allies”
😔
💯. If you have no enemies you have no allies
But no enemies either
😂😂😂
Great video man. It's always nice seeing a positive view of Christianity in media, especially in anime/manga, which is very anti-religion most of the time. Thorfinn is such an amazing character, who has really encouraged me in my own personal life to strive to be a better person, and I'm so happy that this series has started to get the recognition that it deserves.
💯 I think he’s a great role model especially with the current state of the “manosphere”. Men nowadays lack purpose and Thorfinn reminds us that to love and to love well is what we all should strive to do. Glad you enjoyed the video!
the only good thing about christianity was teaching about love, understanding, compassion & believing in the goodness of others instead of spreading hate and violence which i really appreciate. unlike other abrahamic religions (islam & judaism). the only part that i disagree (like most other abrahamic teachings) is the idea that humans have more value & important compared to other non-human life, non living things and the environment. which seems too anthropocentric for me
I'm an Atheist, but I love the interpretation of Christianity with the message of love. Good job dude
I wholeheartedly agree with your interpretation!
I had a course on Old English poetry from around the time Vinland Saga takes place, and the way we interpreted 'The Dream of the Rood' was that it is trying to reconsile the old Germanic/Norse mindset of battle-fame and strength through violence with the new Christian values of love and strength through suffering and compassion that were slowly taking hold in Britain. I found that really intersting at the time, and Vinland Saga had me thinking about it again, especially in the latest episodes of season 2. I just think that it is a genius move to take this time period of conflicting belief systems as a backdrop to a story that seeks to explore the vicious circle of violence, and how to break out of it.
Maybe my brain is just too trained to look for symbolism in everything from studying literature, but this show is full of it, and all of it is so deliberately placed and subtle at the same time, tying back to things episides or even a whole season ago. This show just wants you to think about it.
Truly a piece of art. It is just so beautifully done
Wow sounds like a fun class! And yeah Vinland Saga is a work of art.
yo this was an elite video - really enjoyed the analysis. it would be great to see another video analysing the different characters (Thorn, Askeladd, Throkell, Canute, Olmar) and how they represent/ symbolise/ critique the main themes and conflicts within Vinland Saga
Thanks! Yeah, if enough people want a Vinland video I will make one. If I do make another video, I will probably analyze Canute next and how he embodies Machiavellian values.
I’ve seen several videos with way more views about this topic from Vinland Saga and yours is just SO much better. I feel like everyone else approached the interpretation from this kind of giga chad “don’t be bothered by other people” perspective, but yours really honed in on this theme of how the “true war” the “true battle” is about consciously walking away from our natural programmed fear and hate and fight everyday to be more loving and understanding. Killer job on this ❤
Your comment made my day! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
I always surprise the Christian messages and imagery in media nowadays that's something different. definitely something we all need in the world today true love. you also right no enemies doesn't make you weak and runs away from confrontation. Jesus was the hardest man alive how he stood up to people on what was right and how much he was willing to sacrifice regardless of the backlash
You have to be brave to be good. To love.
the underworld scene into that line was beautiful really like the scene it was beautiful
The Batman (2022) is a journey from being vengeance to becoming a symbol of hope for gotham city. Wish you'd mention that one as well, but the dark knight begins did it awesome as well.
I also like to think that the show is trying to instill the "who am I to judge these people" and "I am no better than the ones I hate/don't like" mentality as shown by Thorfinn's character. Despite Thorfinn hating Askelad and Viking culture, he partook in these activities and is just as vile as them. When he found redemption in S2, not only did he find value and meaning to his life, but to his "enemies" as well. If Thorfinn can change for the better, so can they so who is he to judge when he just stops his "opponents" in their tracks and kill them? It makes us realize the people that we disagree with just have as much value, meaning, and sentience as us. These are not enemies, these are people who are more similar to us than we think. These are that deserve just as much as us.
There are some outliers, but for the most part, I am no better than others and their no better than me and I think that's wonderful. I have no enemies, just equals
That’s very true. It’s tempting to think we are better than others and to vilify people we disagree with, but if we were in their shoes we may behave and do the exact things that they have. Having no enemies is giving people the chance to change.
@@Ranni " - - the chance to change." you said it best
I loved this video and all of your other videos, they really open my eyes man, keep up the great work
Thanks for watching! Glad you like them!
As Tolkien wrote "True courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one."
Great video man. I really enjoyed the analysis.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
beautiful message true love is to willingly sacrifice. Its the will to love others unconditionally
This feels like a Christians take on the admittedly vague philosophy that is “I have no enemies” when the mindset itself has more similarities with Buddhism than it does but uses Christianity as a sort of crux to stand on given the setting.
Which is to say that, in my opinion, Vinland Saga is clearly preaching a Buddhists understanding of compassion but also adopts certain points of Christian cosmology.
Yes, I have heard that Makoto Yukimura probably took some inspiration from Buddhism when developing the manga.
I am only just going through the Vinland Saga.
I have read the saga of the greenlanders and some of the other primary sources that informed it though.
In those original sagas an interesting thing that I found was that the discovery of vinland was more of an accident that happened during a missionary journey of someone from Iceland going to Greenland.
I am not sure if that is mirrored in the Vinland saga anime/manga or not though?
This is a cool topic and an interesting take. I think it also relates to a degree to your interpretation on free will/freedom in your sonic video two weeks ago.
I think you could probably make a good philosophy series going through related concepts and their portrayal in various forms of media pretty well. And to an extent it kind of seems like you already are. Although, maybe in a more haphazard way?
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah, my channel is more of analyzing the themes of a show or a game. It just so happens that a lot of media today tends to gravitate toward the same topics.
@@Ranni Well, philosophy is kind of a semi-easy way to add depth to a work of fiction.
If my memory serves me correctly, Greenland and Iceland were also discovered by accident, which is kinda funny in retrospect
I need to find this series. Great video.
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome content dude
Thank you 🙏!
amazing video bro im wondering if you can do a character analysis of snake
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it! If enough people request it, I may make a Snake video.
pls do a comparison of thorfinn and eren
Glad im not the only one who notice.
What a powerful video
Thank you!
In the end the answer will lead Poeple to this.
Thoughts on season 2 right now ?
I think they've adapted the manga pretty well! Not surprising really.
@@Ranni I am enjoying it
@@topemeister3000 yeah it’s been good so far!
@@Ranni 😁
As expected to see him to adapt a slave morality as he become one.
Are you referring to Nietzsche's view of master vs slave morality?
