I realized I forgot how to play cluck ol' hen. Thinking to myself, "I want to play this in sawmill" went looking at how it's played and of course Hillary's got a video, and of course it's in double C. She loves the ol' sawmill. I've been playing through her songbook but didn't even think to check her channel for this one. Great book by the way. If you like her style pick it up!
o lord have mercy on my soul ,,,,what a beautiful lady ,, Ian Maher ,, from Ireland, coal mining ancestors, love the sound saw mill tuning works great on mandolin , and fiddle , you rocked my soul ,, from Ian , a man who worked the shovel as a young man , and a man who got his PHD (the real way) from tcd Dublin , and still in early 50's and feeling great,, live on ,, long live the mountain tradition, much love ,,
I am learning Jed Clampett and Salt Creek, so I really, really enjoyed your video. I play Scruggs style on a $300 Epiphone and I play with the Prince George Old Time Fiddlers and I am the token banjo player. I try to learn guitar and banjo closed chords at the same time. I love that old song. Thanks again. Richard
Howdy ms Hilary,, Could you play a long 10 minute version of this and a song called Sally in the Garden. An extended version of both songs if you could please. Your new fan. brother Harvey
Very nice, same as the version in the Ignoramus book which I learnt this week! Some tunes I learn and then I leave them but this is one I think I'll be going back to a lot!
Thank you for this lovely tune. One of my favorites on guitar and now I am learning it on banjo. You explain the sawmill tuning very clearly. Best wishes and keep picking! Your tutorials are all great!
I am learning the banjo and decided to try and tackle this song in a songbook I have. Hearing and watching you play was incredibly helpful. Thank you for posting : )
This is very similar to Vestor Jones version - he plays in sawmill with the banjo tuned down a whole tone. I love to bend the notes on third and fourth string :)
I'm currently learning little maggie, then once I have that learnt, this is the next one. I haven't really messed with other tunings so I'm looking forward to it, great videos by the way. Cheers
Do you have any songs about 🐓 Roosters...we used to have a donkey in the field next to us that would go off he hawing at about 3or 4in the afternoon and my mom would laugh everyday.
i love this sound,I got me a banjo coming in on friday,Cluck old hen is the first i want to learn.
For a new player trying to get my head around the basics, it was really helpful the way you slowed things right down. Thanks.
Sawmill tuning I LOVE it...
That tuning is just so haunting, I can't stop hearing it in my head.
Only just begun clawhammer and came across this Chanel, wonderful playing and beautiful voice, doesn’t get better than this!

Hi Hilary what banjo is you play?
What make?
And here I thought Dock Boggs wrote "Oh Death"
Love it Hilary, I shared it to my facebook page...are you playing drop thumb?
I don't think she is, I did not see her thumb play any string other than the 5th.
This is in G sawmill, not A, right?
Yes, we are in G sawmill. Usually played in A.
Really like your playing. Just curious, what kind of banjo do you have? I'm thinking about upgrading from my Deering Goodtime.
I love my goodtime artisan!
Hi Hilary. Are you married ?
Dave.
