The strumming down type motion is ok, but I am really having to persevere with the thumb. it's slowly beginning to feel more natural. More clawhammer lessons would be great please.
I ve just started learning different banjo tuning, and your piece is just amazing. In one of your lives you said that banjo tuning is just a part of playing and you can always tune your banjo different. To feel it different. The double C-tuning is sounding so different for me. It is like deeper or not so ...crispy as the standart one? I dont know, but i just want to thank you, Jim about letting me now this amazing sound of yours. Wish you all the best and amazing holidays! The only string you're tuning lower is the 4th string and it shouldn't be that sloppy. The 2nd string goes higher (from a b to a c), so it should be tighter.

Same! I have the same problem here as I have with guitar though. Fingerstyle comes naturally, but strumming always feels awkward.

I had this figured out in about 10 minutes. It's one of the coolest yet easiest versions of Cluck Old Hen ever. Thanks for posting this Jim!

Is clawhammer always played on a banjo without a resonator? Seems like every clawhammer video I find is on an openback.
A lot of people play clawhammer on open backs, but quite a few use resonator banjos too. Grandpa Jones is an easy example.
After working on bluegrass style for so long, I have no idea where to start learning clawhammer; it feels so WRONG to set my hands up for it. 😂

When I tune it down to C the strings get really sloppy, do I need thicker strings?
