I've heard from other banjo players that there are no 1, 4,5 chords in sawmill but I always felt like that they just didn't know the chords. I searched and this is the first youtube video that explains these chords.
great video! i love sawmill tuning. i am a year into clawhammer. i have the same Deering Vega Vintage Star banjo and i love it. keep the videos coming!
i felt very lost with sawmill and modal tunings in general, you cleared it up a lot for me here actually so thank you :) hopefully i can learn more from yah
Thanks again for this lesson on sawmill tuning! I love the haunting sound of it!! I was working on pretty polly yesterday in this tuning and it is within the scale now that you showed me thank you!! Cheers from North Carolina!!
Awesome! I'm so gld you enjoyed it. I just put out a tab on pretty polly with my last video if you're interested www.banjoskills.com/murder-ballads - but I recommend figuring it out yourself first, which it sounds like you're well on your way.
Thanks. Good luck with your new channel. I'm on board. FYI I love traditional clawhammer, but I am also very interested in playing contemporary music using clawhammer style.
I play “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurhythmics and “Enjoy the Silence” by Depeche Mode on my fretless banjo using clawhammer style. I think they both sound pretty cool.
Honestly, I love watching clawhammer content. I started on banjo and eventuality started playing clawhammer guitar too. Thank you for making clawhammer content and I really enjoyed the video as well. Liked and subscribed in case you have any techniques or tips to improve my clawhammer playing. Good luck with the channel.
Hey Jack thanks so much for bringing us all this useful content. As a novice I appreciate all the help and advice I can get, love the explanation of Dorian scale. Thanks.😊

London, England? Are you a graphics guy? Enjoying your videos. I have the same Vega Vintage Star as you. Just learning clawhammer, been a three finger guy for years. Good luck!
Yup London, England, and I’m trying to learn! Love the vintage star banjo, such a joy to play! I want to make it out to a showroom one of these days and try them all out.
What tuning does Bella Fleck use in the song Bloomin Rose? I love that scale pattern. I had to watch it to figure out that the deep notes came from Abigail Washburn's unique banjo.
There is something I don’t understand about the three main chords in Sawmill Tuning. If the tonic is a G sus 4 chord, wouldn’t the other two chords be the sub dominate, (i.e. C) and a dominate (i.e. D) as is also the case in Ionian mode? Instead of a C, you are using the 7th of the scale, a F. I’m not saying it sounds bad. I was playing around with it on my fretless banjo and the 3 chords sound pretty neat when played together. Nevertheless, when I asked my AI app what the 3 most prominent chords were for Sawmill Tuning it said it was G, C, and D.
Hey thanks for the question! You could definitely include C in the most important chords for sawmill tuning. My thinking on the video is that the F chord is a bit more common than the C in old time songs played out of sawmill. So I wanted to limit the number of chords here to 3, and the F chord narrowly won out over the C. I think it gives you a few more songs that way.
Noone seems to be exploring what, sawmill? What are you on about, bruz? Sawmill is so ubiquitous it has its own name. If you want to play damn near anything Dorian on an open tuning and do a bunch of claw-hammery open pull offs and whatnot, chances are you're looking at Sawmill.
I'm not sure which part you're asking about - but I am terrible at saying finger + fret + string 🤣 so if it looks like I did something other than what I said, you're probably right

Loved this, thanks! I like to do a sawmill set: Shady Grove/Cluck Ol’ Hen/Cold Frosty Morn. Love the melancholy old time sound of this tuning.

Awesome, I'm so glad it was helpful! We tend to play chords less in sawmill tuning, so I think there's a bit of confusion around that.
Keep us strumming & pickin' 🤗 hey from Greeneville Tennessee ✌️ thanks 4 your channel 🙌

Same! Are there any particular contemporary songs you’d be interested in a video on?
This could be challenging but how about “You Wreck Me” by Tom Petty ?
That sounds fun! I'll see what I can do.

Working on a good one! Thanks for your support
Your a cool bloke. I prefer open G. I suppose it's better for minor stuff.... Good show mate.

@@uncommonsensewithpastormar2913 Yeah, in my experience, I see that more often than G, D and C. Cluck Old Hen is a good example - one of my favorites!
I only play in Sawmill. It's the best for trance banjo. Shame no one else seems to be exploring this -- everyone seems stuck in trad clawhammer tunes.
