    Thank you! Bought a banjo 10 days ago. I been playing guitar for 13 years so a little bit transfers over but this is really a different animal. This is my second song. I got gospel plow down. Also in double C tuning. I tried to get the cuckoo but i was really struggling with it (which was incredibly frustrating because i can play that on guitar very well) but ill return to it. I can do this one though. Ill practice this a while thanks

    Holy crap I think you just took my jamming game up a whole level. Thank you! Super fun to start to play with along with chord progressions to get me away a bit from simple chord progressions but without having to jump to melody notes just yet.

    What about chords? Do you just pick a chord shape that fits where your finger is, or do have some tips of that as well?

    • @BanjoSkills
      @BanjoSkills 6 дней назад

      Hey, yeah great question. so I go back and forth on this point. I think it often makes sense to start with the chords before you find the melody, and depending on the song and your ear, you may find one way easier than the other. If you’re having a hard time identifying the chords, very often you can reverse engineer them from the melody, so I personally like to start with the melody most of the time.

    99% of the old-time banjo players used instruments that cost practically nothing or that they had made themselves. Whyte Laydie tone rings and tree of life inlays would have had them baffled.

    I've heard from other banjo players that there are no 1, 4,5 chords in sawmill but I always felt like that they just didn't know the chords. I searched and this is the first youtube video that explains these chords.

    • @BanjoSkills

    • @BanjoSkills
      @BanjoSkills 14 дней назад

      Hey there! I don’t think it’s super important. I teach the double thumbing pattern first because it’s a little easier, but I don’t think it’s a big deal either way.

    This is excellent I have been struggling on and off for years your explanation on how to take a simple melody and slowly build it into a claw hammer version is probably the most helpful bit of information I’ve come across. I can now take versions that are either too basic or too complicated, break them down to the basic melody and then build them into something I enjoy and can play. Thanks so much!!!!!! • @BanjoSkills

      That’s called a scoop, where a piece of the fretboard is carved out. Totally optional, and a lot of banjos don’t have the scoop. But it makes the sound a bit gentler so it can be good for a more laid bake tune like lazy John
