That's a good tip 😊
Thanks Adrian!
Thanks for showing this song!! It's one of my favorite songs besides john hardy! I play this alot on mountain dulcimer but I'm teaching myself clawhammer!! Thanks again I was already in double C so tunings not that different plus I subscribed
Thanks Stephen! Would love to see this on mountain dulcimer, sounds really cool
I've been playing dulcimers since 1996! Got an old style banjo 2 yrs ago! I love clawhammer banjo I'm working on it! Saw you posted cuckoo bird imma try to learn that as well! Do a lesson on John Hardy!! My favorite Carter family tune! Have a good day!!
K
What song is this?
This is the A part for Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss.
Thank you!! I’m learning and you’ve been a big help.
Happy to help!
It's a cool technique. Thanks for the introduction.
You bet! Glad you liked it.
Appreciate the effort but I'd like to see your right hand. Very frustrating
Noted! This was one of my earlier videos, still working out things like camera angles!
Hello! I am new to your channel. It is fantastic! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and know-all. I was wondering though what kind of Banjo do you use in this video or that you recommended. I am new to Banjo. @BanjoSkills
Hey thanks Christopher! I'm playing the Deering Vega Vintage Star. I have a video where I talk about my thoughts on starter banjos here that should help ruclips.net/video/s7YHC5W0nK4/видео.html and make sure you check out the comments - there's tons of great recommendations in there. We got some really good discussion going. Personally, I like the Deering Goodtime, but there were some other really solid looking recs in a similar or slightly cheaper price range in those comments.
@@BanjoSkills Thank you!

I'm learning 3 finger style and you're still helping me. I've been working on arranging Bryan Adams Heaven. I have the melody picked out for a melodic version on an instrument that has sustainable sound but the music runs out before words do and zi don't know how to fix it.
Thanks! Is the issue you're running into that the song is pretty slow? So the melody notes are not sustaining long enough to maintain the song? IF that's the case, I'm actually working on a similar very slow modern song right now I'm hoping to post in the next month or so. Hopefull can give you some ideas!
@@BanjoSkills that's exactly what I'm running into. It'll sound great once I get a Gold Tone Dojo Deluxe
@@BanjoSkills I'll take any ideas you're willing to share.
I wish you’d have played the 2 banjos more.
Nice One. Respect. STP
How would you backup a bluegrass banjo player when s/he is taking a lead break on the same lower tones (down the neck) that most clawhammer players hang in? Perhaps a video on that idea?
I dont' feel like it would be super different - bluegrass with finger picks is such a different sound from clawhammer. I would probably go a little heavier on the brush strokes and maybe add a bit of syncopation to lessen the single string strikes. As I write this comment, I'm getting ideas! I may make a video about this soon 😀
@@BanjoSkills my wife plays clawhammer and I play bluegrass. When I back her leads I go up the neck and try to avoid the 3rd. When we play fiddle tunes I’m playing melodic and use the entire neck. When I’m down the neck there’s a lot of unison notes coming from the clawhammer that sometimes dilute the lead.
Yeah I was going to say, you could consider moving the clawhammer chords up the neck during those parts, and possibly lightly muting the strings. .You might try a light syncopated pattern like 1 2 (3) & 4 & where 1 is a single string, 2 and 4 are brush strokes and the &s are thumb plucks.
Railroad spikes is something I need o get installed! Super annoying for my fiddle group when I’m constantly retuning lol.
Yeah playing with others was what finally made me get it done A good guitar luthier shoudl be able to do it pretty cheap if you order the spikes from Deering.
Great tune
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love It. Jaunty, A Toe Tapper. Joyous. STP.
Thanks STP! Always appreciate your support
You meant ring finger third fret 1st string?
I'm not sure which part you're asking about - but I am terrible at saying finger + fret + string 🤣 so if it looks like I did something other than what I said, you're probably right
Appreciate this great content!
My pleasure!
Super roadmap!
Thanks!
That’s my issue in a nutshell - I just have to remember “the metronome is your friend”
I hear that tick in my sleep! So useful

Brilliant. Very Very Useful. Watched three times and committed the Vid. to Favourite s. Many Thanks. STP.
I’m so glad to hear that! Some good tricks in this one
There’s a Pete Seger recording where he says he wanted to do some double-thumbing, but he couldn’t do it, “So I took some of my own advice and I practiced.” Good old Pete, he sure knew his onions, huh?
Love that! So much good banjo advice boils down to "just practice". Can be hard advice to take 🤣
Can't hide the Metal in this man! 🤘
Very cool, Jack ! I really liked learning about the different techniques....I want to learn them all! And, YES, I love that Galax technique especially gives such a great sound and tone! Keep up the good work and YES, puppy please 🙂 I wanna see her!
Awesome thank you! And Jolene will make her RUclips premiere soon!
You've clearly refined your teaching techniques and it really shows. Kudos for the Galax lick explanation and demonstration. Thank you!
Thanks so much. I'm working hard on these!
Great explanations - thanks!
Glad it was helpful!

Every thumb is different but after 60 years I recommend avoiding "digging in" and put the string at the third point of your thumb and then cocking your thumb slightly to pluck it. That allows you to minimize thumb movement and its easier to play up the neck and on the middle strings which is where the real fun begins.
Interesting! Personally, I dig my thumb in on the inner strings as well. I find that helps my rhythm and accuracy. But I don't have 60 years of experience, that's pretty cool! Someone pointed me towards this video which shows a few different approaches ruclips.net/video/yXV4nt1Psck/видео.html and is really good.
I feel seen! Thank you. Must prioritize rhythm. 😅
Once you get used to playing the wrong notes lots of times, it gets easier 🤣
Wheres jerry garcia? Maybe he would have appreciated what your showing
Could be! Thanks for watching!
Nice One. Respect. STP
Thanks STP!
My first banjo was the Deering Goodtime and I agree, it sounds so good and stays in tune too! I will say that I love that Deering has a trade up program that within the first year or 6mos, can't remember now, that you can trade in your Goodtime and depending on condition (mine was still in perfect condition) they credited you up for one of their other banjos. I did this and got one of their first White Lotus banjos and LOVE it! Still, very early in my learning, but have finally found that clawhammer is the way for me....with MANY THANKS to Jack (BanjoSkills, yes, that guy above in the video 🙂) He's a wonderful teacher!
I had no idea about that trade up program, that's pretty amazing! That said, I stuck with my goodtime for many years and still play it pretty regularly.
Very Useful. Many Thanks. STP
You are welcome!
What does a pinch harmonic sound like on a banjo?
Too fancy for me! Honestly, I use harmonics so rarely, that these are the only ones I really reach for.
@@BanjoSkills aww, you gotta do a short of the master of puppets main riff please
Thanks for this! PS I think a slight dissonance can sometimes add something 😊
Absolutely! And I'm glad this helped !
