  • Here we go over how to quickly setup masking inside Cinema 4D as well as inverted masking which can create some cool effects on its own. Download the scene file with the AE Mask Tool on our Freebies page at alphapixel.net.

    I guess because in Cinema 4D S26 the default setting in the material's transparency channel is set to Glass, for this trick to properly work, please note that you need to change the refraction preset from glass to custom and give it a value of 1. Cool trick. Thank you :)

    this works with redshift compositing tag as well thank you so much! i was looking for something like vray clipper since long time and this is what works like a charm!

      I was able to replicate it too ... but I notice that the colors are very different and I lose intensity in the shadows etc etc ... did you find any more tricks besides the two checks in the overrides visible in refraction? the material for the top plane I tried a few different IORs, even thin walled ones but the effect is always washed out ...

      For anyone finding this with the same question, you need to set all reflection and roughness weights and amounts to 0, as well. And make sure to turn off all the casts/receives shadows, etc., with a RS Object tag. Keep "Casts Refractions," though, or else it'll just be a solid black object. Took me a bit of noodling around to get it to look right.

    Make sure you don't have a sky material in the background otherwise it messes with the transparent object! Thanks for the tutorial! Life saver!

    Boolean do the same and works with all the renders programs... so I think this trick is okay for few things but Boolean tool is the right thing for make it happens really

      Not if you have complex/polygon heavy objects, or lots of clones, or complex animation. Bool will basically only work in a few very simple situations.

    How can I do the same in new versions of Cinema, for example 2024, this tag is simply NOT ACTIVE, as I understand it, it is not available.. Maybe I need to assemble such a setup differently? Maybe a similar tag is currently used for masking?

      @YouGenius @@pregardt Hi, Actually I find out a way to mask and it goes with octane too, "Put the 2 objects u want, let's say a cylinder and cube and u wanna the cylinder to show up and hide with out that mask way, put them in a "Boole" then put under the boole the cylinder and then the cube, Click on boole and select the option "A subtract B", U will find that the cube disappeared and when u move the cylinder towards it or in it, It disappears too!, And u can ofc animate this :))

    so if i were to theoretically put cube with this setup at the end of supposed modeling of car road and animate cars it would mask out cars as it pass through the cube mimicking cars disappearing at the end of the road in animation?

    What would be a common cause for anything behind that mask rendering as grainy and dark - In the example above the figure renders out as if there was never anything in front! Just curious if anyone has experienced this

    This helped a lot, thank you; however, what if I want solid objects (like the cube used above) to remain solid when it is cut? (Rather than being able to see into the cube, can it just be a solid surface at the cut?)

    I've tried this method in one of my visiualisation project but i noticed that the mask object remains its shade on background objects. I didn't use this and went on with boolean.

      Hi, did you also turn off "Casts Shadows" and "Seen By AO" in the compositing tag?

    Is there any way to do this when you're using Sketch and Toon? I already added a Sketch Style tag to the mask and turned the shading off, but that just turns the objects I want to hide white (as opposed to the color I gave them) and still shows the outlines. I have a cloner (of lightbulbs) set up using a spline and I want to animate the lightbulbs around the spline, but I only need a section of the lightbulbs (going through a tunnel) to be showing.

    So, I got scrolling text in a window as a computer screen . At the beginning the paragraph is to long and sticks out of the bottom. So of I put that tag on my text it doesn't show up on my screen. Any suggestions?

    can we animate this
    i used opengl render but the masking didnt work in the animatiom
    it works in render of one frame but when i moved the plane across with transparency on from point a to b the transparency did not work
    it may work in normal standard and physical render
    just wondering
    but its great technique
    quite useful for cutouts

    Do you know a good way to fade in/out Objects? For example a Cube; I don't want to see the back of it during fading.

      use display tag for fade in and out.

      You can fade with the display tag but his problem is that is will show the back of the model. There really isn't a good way that I can think of off the top of my head beside the method in the tutorial Simon. Or setting the polys in back to a transparent material which could be a pain depending on what your setup is.

      thanks for the reply. Polys in the back set an transparenc material is a good idea! But still not working with overlapping object which should fade on the same time.

      @@AlphaPixel3D use display tag and uncheck "seen by transparency" in composting tag. Now you do not see the back of your model and transparency act like it is 2D object.

      I am farely certain, upon testing, that although the object is completely transparent it still legnthens the rendertime compared to if the object was not existing at all (deleted). But still a cool tip here, I still appreciate it :)

    you don't need to go through all of that when you have the Boolean tool
    with it you can see the result live without rendering
    your solution is more like a workaround which is still limited and not fully flexible like the Boolean tool

      Works perfectly on the corona !! You need to use the corona's own compositing by disabling "seen by refractions". This method is perfect for various solutions, just use your creativity!

      the problem with the boolean is that if you need to mask objects created with a cloner and that have an animation, the boolean will not render the materials properly

      Great question! I did take a look at it quickly though because I thought using a gradient as a texture either in transparency or alpha might do the trick but it did not:/ It seems the seen by transparency is an all or nothing setup for now unfortunately

      I have this working in Redshift. In your material, turn down your Refraction/Transmission weight to 0. Then, on your mask object use a Redshift object tag, go to the Visibility tab and uncheck the Visible in Refractions option.

    REDSHIFT SOLUTION: Add a Redshift object tag to your blocking object, go to the "matte" tab, turn on "Override", "Enable", and "Show background".

      Another way for masking with Redshift:
      Add a 100% transparent material (c4d material) to your BLOCKING object -> Add a Redshift Object tag to you BLOCKED object and go to the "Visibility" tag and switch off "Visibility in Refractions"
