That intro is basically what it feels like to be a Flash fan. *DC Voice* oh, i guess we need to do something with the Flash, too.
RE: Impulse's upbringing making him a sociopath... it kinda did! He gets better as he starts to figure out empathy/prioritizing things outside of how it affects him, but there's literally a scene in his solo comic where he leaves civilians in danger in order to beat up more bad guys, so Max gets on his case about it. When Impulse (who was trained to be a superhero via future immersive VR video games) responds, he says something like "Saving people doesn't score points!" which stuns Max silent and causes a whole dramatic character arc where Impulse is trying to figure out why Max was so mad at him. Which I think is some fascinating characterization for a hero character. I also think his relationship with Wally creates some really interesting parallels with how Barry basically took on Wally as his sidekick on sight, but... that's its own essay.
Love the Flash comics! I totally understand that they are NOT easy to talk about, though, since what makes them interesting tends to be the details that are hard to convey when explaining it aloud. And yeah, the Flash cast has had some... very bizarre treatment from DC editorial.

Man, Mark Waid’s run on The Flash was the best!
What made me fall in love with The Flash’s character was actually the epilogue to Issue 70 (the conclusion to Gorrilla Warfare). It’s Wally West trapped in a glass elevator as he’s witnessing an assassination attempt on the mayor. He can’t break the glass cause he’d get shredded, he can’t stay sped up forever cause every little movement he makes is heating up the elevator, and he only has a little bit of time left to intercept the bullet before it strikes the mayor.
Seriously, what a brilliant way of utilizing Wally’s powers in a situation that only he could solve.
If you haven’t read that moment, fish out your copy of Mark Waid’s Flash collection (the one featuring The Once and Future Flash) and read that issue (mainly the epilogue, it’s largely detatched from the rest of the Gorilla Warfare story.

  • @Spikex1

This story probably has my all-time favorite singular triumphant moment in comics (and possibly other mediums too). The audience-cheering feeling of seeing Wally return at the peak climax of the story, bathed in blinding light and kicking ass is just *chef's kiss*
And the story overall really captured in a nutshell why Wally-Flash is my favorite superhero: his character flaws. He grew up as a superhero; it's the only real life he's ever known, and it's given him a certain kind of arrogance and bullheadedness when confronted with certain situations. He's a jackass when he first takes the mantle after Barry's death, but throughout Waid and Geoff Johns' (👉👉) original runs on the book, Wally genuinely matures and changes.

Sal's point on running does make me question some mechanics of when the Flash runs. Does it feel like running when Flash goes super speed or is it the same effort as walking? How fast does the Flash need to go to get tired, or even muscle strains? Does he just have infinite stamina thanks to the Speed Force so it feels like he's sprinting everytime he runs?

I’ve always wondered how running super speed feels for a speedster. Like we know they see slow motion but is it like moving through water or is it effortless, do they take one steps that just launches them or are they doing like the same steps to get to one place we just see them do it faster but it’s not actually any faster for them to run to the store than if they did it normally

I just adore these episodes of what for the show is off topic and niche because it often illicits some of the funniest reactions from the non comic readers on the couch, which of course I get that that's the point of the show but the conceit is really revealed through these types of books.
And I'm gonna put it out there, I've changed so much in these last 10 years and I can kinda correlate it with my introduction to this awesome group of individuals. Even though my time is more limited I'm doing more reading now than ever before, I've lost 115 lbs over the course of a year and a half and by 2 years it'll be 135! I game more (in fairness I married gaming and exercise via stationary bike highly recommend it the results speak for themselves) I'm writing again and playing music for the first time in years. I'd like to turn my own youtube channel into a small place for people to talk about getting off drugs and getting in shape, as of now it's just where I plop music I've written over the years. Sorry got sidetracked lol but I honestly don't have the time to keep up with the current ongoing and ins and outs of the comic worlds anymore, not like I used to do, so this show and it's sister channel and shows are what inspire me to read what I read. Many thanks as always Sal and company

One of the best Flash comics ever. It's a shame we've gotten 3 Flashpoint adaptations but no Terminal Velocity.
Edit: I was thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis close to coming after you as the world's foremost Linda fan. I get that "She's a hot headed reporter" thing but there's a lot of great, big differences between the two that I'll detail here for anyone interested.
A big thing is she wasn't originally a love interest. William Messner-Loebs introduced her as a media member to criticize Wally's previous selfish attitude. He also touched on factors such as women being treated like meat in the workplace and racism (ignoring that awful Lois blackface comic). All before she and Wally ever kissed. She was a solid supporting cast member in her own right for years before they started dating and wasn't designed to even be a love interest like Lois. It just sort of came about.
And another big thing is she started dating Wally for Wally. Lois and Clark is, at its core, a love triangle between only two people with Lois who falls in love with Superman, Superman who keeps his distance for a dozen reasons, and "Clark" who reciprocates her love but can't break this illusion he puts up of himself as a bumbling shy guy to keep up his ruse. With Linda and Wally there's no lying, no gaslighting, no years of dancing around the topic. It's a much more honest and open relationship that developed from years of growing mutual respect, as they initially hated each other. As you said in this video, lying to people you love sucks.
Anyhow that's my Linda rant, she's great.
edit 2: Fun fact, the retcon that Barry is the same lightning bolt that hit himself is not Geoff Johns! It's from Secret Origins Annual #2 by Fleming and Infantino in 1989. Barry's death in Crisis is shown to wrap back around to him blasting back through time as pure energy until he happens to strike himself. The idea being, at the time, the energy Barry was carrying from the Anti Matter Cannon is the origin of the energy that gives him his power (and, ostensibly, Wally who he shares that power with unknowingly).
Johns just made it so Barry generated the Speed Force. Which was dumb as all heck and makes no sense, but that's Flash for you. Thankfully they've since undid that bit of retconning.
edit 3: hey stop talking trash about my boy Piper :( Literally the first gay hero at DC! Predates that fraud Northstar over at Marvel, and in a book people care about!
edit 4: So the thing with the Speed Force is the Speed Force is still there, and he risks getting sucked into it every time he goes faster than light speed. He can still do basically everything but there's always the risk he screws up and gets stuck. It's basically the explanation for why The Flash doesn't just solve every problem in the world -- go too fast, potentially die. But when the chips are down he can risk it because he's still got Linda to come back to.
Edit 5: "Why don't you run faster than this heat vision!" Sure thing: imgur.com/a/YVStY9e
    :D

I know yall don't do a lot of indie stuff but "Localman" from image has been one of my favorites. Would love to see yall talk about some non marvel/DC comics😊

OK HOLD ON the white eyes work cause dc also loves either giving barry wallys logo or wally barrys logo so having to identical flashes would be hard to do unless they made wally silver in fact thats why ace is shown to be silver and black

Ahh a sequel I wanted… one of the Flash, one of my all time fave heroes ever. Wally West is awesome and his era was, with some awful art aside, some of the best in 90’s DC.

Wally is the best Flash hands down. I was so glad when they turned the comic away from Barry and back to Wally after YEARS of this new 52 Barry stuff.

Sal mentioning that Captain America and the serpent society story is still available has me rolling 😂. Im sure his jaw dropped when he read about Giancarlo Espositos role in Cap 3😂
