If they couldn’t have included Hairspray, they could have put in Cry-Baby on there. It’s also a John Waters movie but actually had characters singing. Although that musical didn’t last long on Broadway.
jers guiva they must have gotten their info from the musical’s Wikipedia page which says it won. But the Wikipedia page for that year’s Tony’s says that Swan Lake won.
I imagine it'll only be a matter of time, Frozen was adapted onto the stage so I'd be surprised if at least one of those isn't made into a stage musical
No, the story of The Greatest Showman is loosely based on the story of an already existing musical called Barnum. They wouldn't adapt the movie adaptation of a stage musical to the stage again.
For those of you whinging "but Hairspray is a movie musical", that film came out in 2007, 5 years AFTER the stage production premiered on Broadway, and 19 years after the first movie of Hairspray, which is NOT a musical.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers might had flopped on Broadway, but it's one of the best movie musicals out there. Certainly deserves at least an honorable mention.
correction! in 1999, a.c. ciulla did not win the tony for best choreography for footloose, but they were nominated. matthew bourne won for swan lake that year.
Excuse me but it just so happens that “Newsies” the movie is a cult classic. I can’t believe y’all shading it like it don’t matter. The Broadway musical wouldn’t exist without the movie so show some respect, eh?
Perhaps, but Newsies failure at the box office (and the way it didn't seem to tap into the public zeitgeist was also largely what stopped the resurgence of the live-action film musical in its tracks. It was a real lost opportunity. Frankly the musical was lucky to have had a chance at a second life on stage.
Unpopular opinion: I think the Newsie's movie is better than the musical. I mean, the musical puts a lot more emphasis on the love story between Jack Kelly and Katherine, who wasn't even in the movie. The movie looks more at the bond of friendship and brotherhood among the news boys, and for that, I like it sooooo much more!
The original movie from 1988, was not a musical. This list is talking about movie musicals, not just movies. Halfway through the video, I figured this out. lol
Hairspray is a musical they have the characters sing and dance it doesn’t just have music in them. The characters sing songs and I’m pretty sure they are original songs for the movie
The original 1988 John Waters film Hairspray was not a movie musical but it did inspired the stage production. You're thinking of the 2007 movie which is based on the stage musical.
The stage musical version of Mary Poppins from Disney and Cameron Mackintosh is returning to the Prince Edward Theatre in London this year starting in previews on Wednesday 23rd October before officially opening on Wednesday 13th November and I will be seeing it before Christmas on Saturday 14th December in a matinee afternoon performance
The performing arts school I went to, last year in our showcase in a few groups we had songs from marry poppins and 42nd Street (the Broadway musicals)
Newsies deserves to be #1. 💕 Millie deserves all the love! 🎶 White Christmas musical is magic! 🎄 Singing in the Rain is good, but overrated. 🤷🏻♀️ And, Footloose? Y’all broke your own rules. 🤦🏻♀️
Little Shop Of Horrors!!! Fits the criteria because while the original film was non-musical, the musical version of the show didn't make it to Broadway (only off-Broadway) until after the movie musical came out.
I love Newsies and White Christmas. But I still haven’t seen Mary Poppins on stage. An American in Paris and 42nd Street are equally beautiful shows too. Xanadu was all right but the movie is better.
Any chance you have a list for the best movies musicals based on Broadway productions? (i"d ask about Broadway production based on animated films, but i don't think there are 10 & I can only think of 2 that aren't Disney........)
Well for footloose the musical, the characters in the show sing the songs featured in the movie such as the title song, holding out for a hero, almost paradise and more. I agree it is confusing but I see where they are coming from.
The sweets song in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in my opinion is just like Step in Time in Mary Poppins. I can’t agree nothing more or less to what Doug Walker said about that song. When I see Step in Time and the Toot Sweets song in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang I just never want to stop. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is another favorite film of mine.
I actually prefer the stage version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I'm not a big fan of the movie and I couldn't finish it. But I really really like the musical
"Mary Poppins" was in developmental hell for a while. P.L. Travers didn't want it to be adapted but she caved and only agreed if it wasn't an American production and had no resemblance to the film. Needless to say after he death Disney was allowed to get involved and fix the initial problems the musical had.
The stage musical version of Mary Poppins from Disney and Cameron Mackintosh is returning to the Prince Edward Theatre in London this year starting in previews on Wednesday 23rd October before officially opening on Wednesday 13th November and I will be seeing it before Christmas on Sunday 1st December in a matinee afternoon performance
Sort of; there was a version way back in 1902 that debuted at the Majestic Theatre (which is still in use today), but obviously it came 30+ years before the famous movie. As for the movie, no, although we got The Wiz and Wicked.
There seems to be a lot of confusion on what this list is! There are movie musicals that didn't start on stage, but then eventually became a stage show. That is what this list is. I was confused at first too.
Looking down the comments on here, I find it fascinating that people don’t know that Hairspay was a serious (!) film long before all those camp songs were grafted on to it! Do some research and find the John Walters original. I says much more about the subject matter (racism) then the musical does. It’s a fascinating, entertaining, and disturbing film. The musical is just froth by comparison
There's a John Carpenter version of Hairspray? I mean, I've seen the John Waters version, but I bet the John Carpenter version is swell. Does Jamie Lee Curtis play Tracey?
Okay. I think that the 1992 Newsies was better than the Broadway version the movie was historically accurate. The movie actually had kids, which correctly displays the newsies because the Newyork newsies were all innocent children of ages like 6 to 15. In the Broadway version they had 20 yearold men to display newsies. Also, the movie had Denton. A very important character who was very real and helped the newsies win the strike. KATHERINE?!?!?!?! No thankyou.
The stage musical version of Mary Poppins from Disney and Cameron Mackintosh is returning to the Prince Edward Theatre in London this year starting in previews on Wednesday 23rd October before officially opening on Wednesday 13th November and I will be seeing it before Christmas on Saturday 14th December in a matinee afternoon performance and I have gotten the tickets for it
First of all, 367 performances was a successful run for a show in the 30s. But by the 80s and Singing In The Rain, it was a flop. Second, Leslie Caron's last name isn't pronounced Karen, it's pronounced with the accent on the 2nd syllable ca-Rone. Third, the most successful American musical in Broadway history, Chicago, is baed on a 1942 movie called Roxie Hart, starring Ginger Rogers, Adolph Menjou, Sara Allgood (Mama Morton), and Spring Byington (Mary Sunshine). It includes 4 songs, two of which are sung by George Montgomery, one of which has Ginger Rogers dancing, which makes it far more of a musical than Footloose.
Also can someone please put the top 10 iconic movie heroines of the 2010’s back cuz I saw it removed with no reason along with the YOU season 2 video that’s been removed
Criteria for this list: movie musicals that were so successful they were adapted into Broadway musicals... #6 Newsies -- "Not highly regard or popular... the movie was a huge flop" Don't get me wrong--I love this movie, but "so successful" it was not

Okay but Footloose the movie was never a musical, so it shouldn’t be qualified to be on this list based on your rules, and if that’s the case, The Producers is more qualified because the original movie has the song Springtime for Hitler which was still used for the broadway musical version.
It seems to me that you broke our own rules with this one, some of them including Mary Poppins started at the West End before Broadway, so does Mary Poppins really count as a Broadway musical when it started at the West End.
The stage musical version of Mary Poppins from Disney and Cameron Mackintosh is returning to the Prince Edward Theatre in London this year starting in previews on Wednesday 23rd October before officially opening on Wednesday 13th November and I will be seeing it before Christmas on Saturday 14th December in a matinee afternoon performance and I have gotten the tickets for it
Footloose the movie isn’t a musical though, it’s a movie with music in it. None of the characters sing. Therefore it broke your rules.
I agree "Hairpray" (1988) is more of an musical than Footloose!
Andrea Henderson
I thought you said Hairspray. I panicked
If they couldn’t have included Hairspray, they could have put in Cry-Baby on there. It’s also a John Waters movie but actually had characters singing. Although that musical didn’t last long on Broadway.
Did they say the stage ver won a Tony for Best Choreography in 1999?
It was nominated but Swan Lake won.
jers guiva they must have gotten their info from the musical’s Wikipedia page which says it won. But the Wikipedia page for that year’s Tony’s says that Swan Lake won.
I’m confused, how does Footloose qualify? It’s not a musical. They never sing it.
erin_ NSU19 she means the original film.
I totally agree! Footloose was a movie with music in it, not a "musical".
Caitlyn Lavelle I love the remake more than the original. But never saw Footloose on stage
Hairspray isn’t a musical but footloose is ??? SOMEONE EXPLAIN
Inspiring Puppies the original hairspray movie wasn’t a musical, but the latest one is as it’s based off the broadway show
Inspiring Puppies I mean, in that case what about sister act?
Lonell Fletcher true
Delly_Simlie oh ok thank you
Amen!
I’d love to see The Greatest Showman and La La Land come to stage
Inspiring Puppies I thought Greatest Showman was better but I strongly agree.
I imagine it'll only be a matter of time, Frozen was adapted onto the stage so I'd be surprised if at least one of those isn't made into a stage musical
Yes! And I think The Greatest Showman should be done in the round!
Please bring the great showman to broadway
No, the story of The Greatest Showman is loosely based on the story of an already existing musical called Barnum. They wouldn't adapt the movie adaptation of a stage musical to the stage again.
13:00 I just realized it's Anna Kendrick!
Arya Stark She looked so adorable back then
Call me a weirdo, but newsies should be number one. I love the musical too much
Yeah, agreed
For those of you whinging "but Hairspray is a movie musical", that film came out in 2007, 5 years AFTER the stage production premiered on Broadway, and 19 years after the first movie of Hairspray, which is NOT a musical.
is it just me or did I just come for Newsies ( Newsies on a mission Kill the Competition )
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers might had flopped on Broadway, but it's one of the best movie musicals out there. Certainly deserves at least an honorable mention.
It’s awful
In my opinion, Newsies should've been higher up on the list (I'd even say top 3, at least, if not 1) but oh well
correction! in 1999, a.c. ciulla did not win the tony for best choreography for footloose, but they were nominated. matthew bourne won for swan lake that year.
Movies with music in them are excluded
10 Footloose
Me:.....WHAT!?
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang the musical seems to works better in the UK than the US
In the UK in London at the Palladium
Newsies :-)
11:30 Rip - Carol Channing.
Chitty Chitty is underrated
Loving the movie since I was little.
Seriously Footloose the movie has no singing! It belongs on a list of non-musical movies that were made into Broadway musicals.
God, how I loved the film Xanadu.....proudly stated....
How if footloose a musical but hairspray isn’t like what that doesn’t make sense
Excuse me but it just so happens that “Newsies” the movie is a cult classic. I can’t believe y’all shading it like it don’t matter. The Broadway musical wouldn’t exist without the movie so show some respect, eh?
The Baltimore Movie Trailer Park I totally agree!
They're not wrong though. Having a cult following (which I've been part of for decades) doesn't mean it wasn't a flop.
jaebee1121 That point is very valid too.
Hairspray was a movie that became a broadway musical then a movie musical not the other way around.
Wait a minute, Hairspray is not a movie musical but Footloose is? Someone please explain this for me.
Mckhenze Johnson The original film of Hairspray wasn’t a musical
the movie hairspray you are thinking about was based off of the musical made in 2002
I made a suggestion of "Top 10 Musicals based on non-musical films", please make this video!
Also still waiting on an explanation for the supposed “movie musical” called “Footloose”...
Why isn’t hairspray considered a musical? Judging on the “characters singing” definition it should be no?
The original movie from 1988, was not a musical. This list is talking about movie musicals, not just movies. Halfway through the video, I figured this out. lol
Jamie ahhh ok
I find it funny that they made a stage musical of a movie musical that was a musical remake of a movie based on a stage play with High Society.
Brilliant!
Where is "Victor/Victoria"?
I am also thinking about that.
Are you kidding!?! No Lion King!?!?!
They said no animated movies.
@@juliarivard2172 they also said no movies that feature music yet Footloose is there...
Wish animated would have been included to see where some would have placed. The broadway production of Anastasia is fantastic
1999 Tony Best Choreography went to Swan Lake and not Footloose.
8:08 Funny enough, the 2001 revival at the Lyric Theatre, was actually situated ON WEST 42nd Street!! It also won Best Musical Revival
List in no particular order:
Lion King
Wizard of Oz
Mary Poppins
Grease
Oliver!
Frozen
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang should be no. 1.
Hairspray is a musical they have the characters sing and dance it doesn’t just have music in them. The characters sing songs and I’m pretty sure they are original songs for the movie

Mixed feelings on this list. Gave a thumbs down as the criteria wasn't even followed
Little Shop Of Horrors!!! Fits the criteria because while the original film was non-musical, the musical version of the show didn't make it to Broadway (only off-Broadway) until after the movie musical came out.

Hairspray is more of a musical than footloose. Footloose has dance but the characters don’t really sing. Also grease was not included!
