Love the history and pictures. Reminds me of going to Seattle International Raceway in the 70's. So many types of racing there. The long track but you could only catch your favorite when the made it around. The 1/4 mile for Funny cars and dragsters and open competition on Sundays for street cars. Some bug pairs to watch too. I had a friend of Local Jim Greens that we could get pit passes. Stupid me didn't even think about taking pictures back then😥
I remember those days to. seen black satin vw bug running 9 seconds in the 1/4 mile at sir good times and golden gardens grew up in ballard now living in Nebraska for the last 15 years
I'm pretty old too Darrin we may be about the same age. I turn 58 in about 3 weeks. I was only into VW's in magazines but never owned one just worked on my brothers bug. They suck in Alaska anyway. But I was in Orlando as a squid (Navy) and used to hit the Wet-n-Wild there and cruise the streets on the weekends. Really enjoyed the town in the mid to late 80's. God bless.
GLAD YOU GOT THE NEW HEADS the original ones had issues with guides and valve seats. seats would drop and break the pistons on type 4. plus some of the guides would slip and cause other problems. saw this stuff all the time back in the 80s and 90s when these were almost new.
VW Darrin. thank you for subscribing to my channel. I’ve been watch your channel for years. A lot of the stuff I’ve learned is from your videos. you sir are a legend. I am honored.
Hello Darrin - I can't begin to tell you how many times I've heard VW folks say that the chirping sound from the tail pipes is the way they are supposed to sound. Not true! German peashooters did NOT make that sound. My first bug was a '63 that I bought in 1969 - seven years old. It still had the original factory pipes on it and did not chirp. My second bug was a new '74 and it didn't chirp. I've had a '70 for over 20 years and back in the day bought OE peashooters that don't chirp to this day. I've just finished up a 40hp and my dilemma will be to find a set of pipes that will likely be "made in China" and they'll chirp like crazy. If you'd like to hear a set of OE peashooters, let me know. I'll send you a vid and you'll hear how they use to sound. Love your vids. I've learned a boat load of stuff from you. Craig
Another great video. Love the history lesson of OSW. It has changed over the years. I'm shocked you didn't have any Ken Fisher pics. He was so active back in that era. Good to see Darrin with a smile on his face. Thank both of you for all the VW content you guys produce. Take care, stay safe.
Hey man, Kevin here from Australia. Wow you have so many stories . You should put everything into a book with all your pictures to match the stories. Just have someone follow you around for a year recording. Anyhoo i love your videos i hope we meet some day . Stay healthy. ✌ Peace
Sweet sounding engine, good job as always. Cool old pics man. Got a good score of parts and such, the sand rail will be a cool project. Would be good to see you and Andrea at some shows, let me know if you need anything.
Thanks for the tip on the starter box! I just bought one. I'm sick of running wires all over my test stand. Nicely packaged, and a QUICK shut off for emergencies! Great video!
OMG I can’t believe you made that thing run and sound as good as it does after seeing what it looked like I thought it was doomed for the landfill for sure. Thank you for always putting out quality contact and how to videos you have a way of making your viewers feel like they’re hanging out right there with you Jason Palm Springs Ca
Nice... How's your back holding up after your surgery a few years back? You look to be moving around OK, but that doesn't always tell the full story... Anyways, looking forward to your next video... 🙂👍
Darrin and CT, thanks for you all you do. Please provide all of us more history and pictures! It is just as good as build videos. Wish there was build video on the sidewalk motor! I will have to say that is one sexy set of transmission parts!
vapour blasting doesn't use sand, that's kind of the point, which is why it's used on very sensitive, intricate items like carbs. so no problems with blocking oil galleries. besides, a properly cleaned block will always have all the plugs removed to make sure it's properly flushed.
Engine runs great. That buggy will be perfect for a stocker, especially if you don't plan on keeping it. Glad to see you having fun in the shop, keep it up.
On the 1.7 type 4 motor you can cut the heads for the factory 2.0 liter pistons/ cylinders and install a 2.0 Litre crank and rods and get some reliable HP.
CT is in good company with his projects. Darrin is the man you want doing your motors and transaxles. Rusty, the Swamp Dragon, the 914 and hopefully the Karmann Ghia will all benefit! 😉👍👌☝️ What’s Darrin’s email? A friend of mine has a beautiful ‘67 and he might be interested in buying the long block.
Got a link to the channel you are talking about? Couldn't find it. Keep making the videos, love 'em. Currently building my first vw engine for my daughter's 1970 convertible (her choice, she loves vw's) 1904 with dual webber's.
Hey VW Darrin. My name is Eric from So.Cal. I've been watching your videos now for a month and a half and I must say you Definitely have the experience. I am a Chevy man and I don't know NOTHING about VW motors but I've decided to try my hands at one. I've got one I'd bought in pieces in boxes and I'm not trying to go for hi performance...just a nice stock engine. I've ordered new head stud rods (8mm) but I've should have ordered (10mm) studs. I've also ordered a pack of 14mm case savers to 8mm rods. My question for you is is it ok to use both 8mm and 10 mm studs to lock down the heads? Your answer will be well worth the wait. Thank you so much. Your friend...Eric from Cali.
Your old 1600 rebuild video gave me the confidence to rebuild my type 3 engine years ago. I didn't even know how to do a proper oil change, but you, the bentley and thrsamba made it possible. Have you thought about possibly donating that engine? Some kid of nonprofit, people are suffering from covid and shit. Curious how much would you charge for that motor?
I was thinking of doing the same thing with Chevy 350 engines as you can get rebuild kits for about $250 these days. and you could get the machining done on several engines at once.. and while they might not be the best, I'm sure people wouldnt mind having one for their daily driving car! But damn me, every long motor I find has had the bores done at .060 over already and you cant get any sizes of piston ring further over that and resleeving would make it economically unworthy
Man you got decent, cut ur hair and trimmed the beard! You was looking grandpa cool, ur still cool as a cucumber anyways! Thanks to your videos I built my 1600 and it started after the third brabrabra tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet I fell in love
Thanks for all the knowledge and great video's. I have a question for you if you get a chance to answer. Have you ever built or used the "Scat Killer" case?
