    Havent seen you in a while! Good to see a new video. I could use some in put on transmission setup I have a sand rail that has a 68 swing axel long in it and it needed some up keep upon pulling apart to do a new seal. I'm having issues with getting it to go into the gears properly. Atleast I think so. When the transmission is out of the vehicle and it's in gear should the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4, and reverse be able to turn in both directions? Or should it only spin in the direction it is intended to? Any help would be awesome. I'm new to Vw air cooled and know so little about the transmission stuff. I tried to find a jig but had no luck. None of the actual gear parts have been pulled apart. I feel like it's just getting g it adjusted and put in the case but I cant figure out if iv done something I wasnt supposed to.

    • @VWJawbreaker

      One way is to markthe case with a little paint around the oil hole, install the bearing and then chamfer the bearing to make them line up.

    Hi Darrin, quick question I have a new set of cases i bought 20 years ago. I am building a 2110 I went to put the thrust bearing in and there wasn't a tang cut in the case on the one side can i file a tang slot or sould i bring it to a my machine shop to do it?

    • @vwdarrin
      @vwdarrin  2 года назад

      You can cut yourself pretty easy with a small file. You really only need one Tang they make both single and dual tang cam bearing sets I will usually cut a notch if I am building a performance motor and go with the double set up.

    I have a question. I have a engine that was a 1641. Cam in a 120 . I don't want to break the case apart.
    Want to increase the h.p. by going to 1600 jugs. The crank is a stock 69mm . I have been looking at rods some the center to center is longer.
    That's my question, can I get more compression by just changing the lenth of the rods, or is that a really bad idea

    • @vwdarrin
      @vwdarrin  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@genenoud9048 It is not a bad idea. You can use on the rod to move the piston closer to the combustion chamber the tighter you make the quench the more compression you will have. Just make sure to check your piston to have clearance at 15° past top dead center. This is usually where you will have an issue if you get the piston to close. Typically in the Volkswagen world 50,000 is the norm between the top of the piston and the top of the barrel. I have tightened it up to zero before on personal stuff you can get away with 30 and still be pretty safe. On a V-8 you can make it zero or above the deck. But Volkswagen squirm around a little more than a V-8. Hope this helps and doesn’t confuse you lol

    Hi Darrin, I just bought a 67 bug and it came with 2 1600 dual port engines and the original 1500 engine. I am wondering how I would go about figuring out if these guys are still usable or whether the block/internals are bad (i'm brand new to automotive hobby). I'm trying to build one of the 1600 blocks as large as I can while maintaining as much reliability/stability as possible. Ive read you can't build an engine that does it all (good MPG's, good power, reliability) so my biggest goal is to just get something that has good torque/acceleration to get up to speed easily on these crazy tight onramps where I live, and decent MPG's if I want to drive it like a grandma. Additionally, I don't want to be doing a rebuild every 6 months and maintenance every week cause things are out of wack. Im not looking to take it to the track or anything. Maybe i'm asking for an engine that doesn't exist. I know its a lot of info, any help is appreciated.

    • @ericknoblauch9195
      @ericknoblauch9195 Год назад +1

      My father had two VW's when we were kids. One was a 1500 that was very reliable, and ran for many years. The other had a 1600 dual port. The 1600 dual port was a nasty engine which ended up needing a valve job every 30,000 miles. The 1600 dual port also would suck valves through the pistons. Also the 1600 dual port ran like a tin can. I remember the day when the compression in the 1600 was low, and it was going to need more engine work. That day is when dad sold that 1600 dual port. We kept the 1500 running for 15 more years long after that 1600 dual port was gone. The 1500 was also sold many years ago, and I still see it running today.
