I love how Fran honors Sarah's memory by having the kids watch home videos and lighting a candle to guide her way.

Fran, like many stepparents that fill the role of deceased parents, knows that she could never replace Sarah but that she can be there for the kids and guide them through tough times, like when Maggie thought she was pregnant and when she meets the kids for the first time and they were still grieving over their mom.

They handled this quite beautifully. It is very realistic: many people whose spouses have passed away often feel guilty when they fall in love again, especially if their first marriage was a happy one.
Although The Nanny is fictional, it was wonderful how the children (and Max) knew that Fran could never replace Sarah; Fran's romance with Max was entirely different but still special.

It was also done on Designing Women when Charlene was dating Bill. His first wife Nancy died, and he briefly broke it off with Charlene because he felt guilty about falling in love again. But it was Julia, who understood how Bill felt because she also felt the loss of her first husband before she dated Reese. Julia told Bill that it was OK to fall in love again and that he had enough room in his heart for both Nancy and Charlene. Sara was basically telling Max the same thing, that she wanted him to be happy.

And Sarah's spirit knew what Max needed was to fall in love again, so she sent him a woman that would adore their kids and adore him. This is true love. Love is not possessive, and if you have to go you will always want your beloved to be happy and prosperous

That was NOT his ex-wife, Sarah was his LATE wife. To me, an EX-Wife is when the woman is no longer married by divorce, LATE wife is when the wife dies during the marriage.
