I went in 2019 and it was one of my favourite Disney Theme Park trips. It's the first time I've really relaxed and just wandered around because of the short lines; you can get on everything in a day. Tokyo Disney Resort is incredible but Hong Kong does have a certain charm, I just wish they'd focused more on unique attractions (Mystic Manor and Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars are great) to make it stand out more and attract more visitors from nearby countries. I feel one of their biggest audiences could be the Japanese disney-fanatics if they has more things aimed at that specific audience (like a Duffy or Stella-Lou attraction/show).

It’s such a shame that when it was finally getting new rides and experiences, it fell victim to things that is completely out of its hands. As a domestic Disney theme park enthusiast it’s easy to forget that the international Disney parks have different rules to abide by. When you think Disney, you think the company has carte blanche; As long as they have the land they can do what they please. That’s clearly not the case for the Asian Disney parks and it is sad to see that the lofty goals that the imagineers have for potentially spectacular attractions may never come to fruition. Thank you for delving into this incredibly interesting topic.

Yes but when the government owns majority stake in the amusement park, one that has yet to turn a considerable profit, you cant really blame them for their decisions. HK would better be suited as a fuller park rather than split by two mediocre ones, forcing you to go to both parks to get a taste of both, an issue plaguing the california adventure park. A second park would serve as an even less profitable version of a California Adventure

Hkdl is perfect if you want to do all the rides in the park in one day. During the pandemic, we were able to go many times and there was hardly a queue for any of the attractions. Now it’s back into full swing but I think u don’t need to wait as long for the rides as the other Disney parks around the world. If the rides get up to 1.5 hours is already pretty much maxed out. I go there almost weekly with my daughters because of the magic access card. It makes it easier to go for 3-5 hours and then leave again. Quite convenient as it’s about 1-1.5 hours by MTR from my house. I hope they can keep developing the park. Some parts of it do need a bit of a refurb though like the tables and chairs at most of its restaurants especially the outdoor seating areas and there should be more sheltered areas aswell as Hong Kong does get rain often and the sun can be blisteringly hot aswell. It is very family orientated and I found it caters very well for wheelchair users that I have seen being able to access most rides. Hope the govt keeps supporting it as it would be a shame if it does close down with it taking a loss each year which I find unbelievable. Watching how much revenue their retail generates daily.

Not really, Disneyland Paris or mainly Disneyland Park there really focuses on major refurbishments at the moment than having expansions in which we have been seeing since 2016 when Big Thunder Mountain was refurbished and now with the castle. It took them a while to get that treatment too. I think they will be fine for now, if they try to update all existing attractions in Disneyland Park.
Even Disneyland Hotel is receiving a major update, all of this is probably for the upcoming 2024 Olympics.
Walt Disney Studios Park is the one that needs overhauling. After the expansion in WDSP, they need some new rides in the main one.

The 2nd gate in Hong Kong is dead for now but not dead forever. As someone who use to live and work in Hong Kong, the HK government not making the extension option available is just posturing for a better deal with Disney. First, if you subtract the management fees and royalties that Disney receives annually from HK Disneyland, the park is actually profitable more often than news reports would make you believe. 2nd, due to the location of Hong Kong Disneyland and the zoning/land use restrictions and allowances that are in place for the that piece of land, it is zoned for commercial leisure and hospitality purposes. Its not zoned for much needed affordable high density public housing but you could build low rise residential such as luxury high end villas. However the local wealthy elite would have little to no interest living next to the theme park. So unless Ocean Park wants to develop that piece of land, the only other thing that that vacant land really makes sense for it is it to be reallocated to Disneyland in the future when it will be needed.

Among all disney parks, Hong Kong disneyland resort has been the most problematic and unsuccessful (in terms of marketing and corp-government communication) one that is under so many constraints although HKDL has wonderful park planning, infrastructures and strong disney vibe. It’s right at the bay surrounded by green mountains, with great dynamics and magic happening in the “valley”, and considered the climate in Hong Kong, it’s (or was) truly a paradise undisturbed by the eternal urban development in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, this would not be the case anymore.

    • @brianmhyung

Last but not least, (I think most of the local fans of HKDL would agree) the locals in Hong Kong seem to feel indifferent about HKDL for many reasons. Thanks to Covid-19 with everyone remains stuck in their hometown, whether it does more harm to HKDL or not, in a short period of time it is bringing more locals back to the park and reintroducing the park to the locals who have not been paying attention to it. Well, i do not think it will do a massive change, still, the local work-life pattern is partly the cause as well.

@@WellBattle6 That was not my point. China is more than capable of supporting 2 Disney parks similar to the U.S. Shanghai Disneyland can be the equivalent of Disney World as the main mutiday park that appeals to the country at large and HK Disneyland can be the "local" park that is targeted for a more regional audience. The province of Guangdong alone is larger than Japan, home to Tokyo Disneyland and i'm not counting Hong Kong proper or other regions in Southern China were it might be faster to reach Hong Kong than Shanghai.
By your logic Tokyo Disneyland compete's for every other Disney park in Asia and Disney World takes away theoretical business away from potentially smaller parks around the world including non-existent ones in the Northern U.S, another European park and one in Latin America.

@@Marylandbrony That really depends on how you define "middle income". An annual salary of $10,000 USD places one squarely in China's "middle class", as that's roughly the average annual income. But Disney in the US, Japan, and France is clearly targeting guests with incomes about 6 figures, especially in recent times as they refuse to expand capacity and instead opt to raise prices to match supply and demand. And as it stands, the population of 6-figure-earners in China is way below that of the US, despite having 4x the population. And perhaps as a result, Shanghai Disneyland currently costs well under half of what a ticket to one of the US parks costs (i.e. around $50 USD)

HK Disney didn't do anything with it for the past 15 years and failed to meet the requirements of visitors count set (for their Phase 1) in the original contract which allowed HK Disney to easily reserve the rights of purchase of the Phase 2 land. I mean if you are given nearly 2 decades to do it and you didn't, that probably means you are not interested at all or it is simply not achievable, which is fine, business is business, but Disney for sure did make their own firm calculated decision in abandoning the rights of the 2nd Phase land. My wife visited briefly in 2019, just about enough time to ride Mystic Manor and watch the Paint the Night parade, both of which she liked very much. The short waits also made the park very enjoyable. But the subsequent unrest and political crackdown in Hong Kong made her unwilling to go back there for a good long while, even before the pandemic hit. Ultimately HK Disneyland's biggest problem may turn out to be where it is--though it seemed like a relatively promising location when it first opened.
(Come to think of it, right now you could say the same thing about Walt Disney World.)

This idea that we’re living under tranny and that all our freedoms have been lost.. is just an idea that is perpetrated by the news. The best example I can give for a ‘westerner’ is.. seeing violent headlines in the local newspaper yet not seeing or feeling any violence in your community or within your network.

We are scheduled to try and get there in 2023 as part of my promise to my daughter to get to all the parks one time. She doesn't know it, but I am planning it as a combo with Tokyo, so we'll have 3 days in HK (one day to explore the city a little) the two at the park (so we are not rushed and can go back for favorites), then it will be on to the two Tokyo parks and that will complete the group. HK DL was one of Eisner's failures just like DCA. It will take BILLIONS of dollars to get it to a point of just being decent (again just like DCA). Under current Disney leadership though and as the CCP is squeezing HK, it may be much harder than anybody thinks or is willing to admit.

If they could have, while it would have required extra investment down the road, they would have at least the 2nd park land set and opportunity for 2-3 more resort hotels (with one having been built close/within the park like DCA Grand Californian)

I’ve been salivating over the possibilities for that second park ever since my first visit in the first year the park was open. Hong Kong Disneyland, and Hong Kong itself, are basically done with their National Security Law! They could only rely on Mainland Chinese tourists, which mean they have to compete with Shanghai Disneyland! Chinese tourists are typically the "Been there, Done that" kind of tourists, so revisiting the same destination is not high on their list, especially when there is a Real World out there. With the deterioration of US/China relationship, Disney's investment in China is highly at risk now. I could only see them cutback or stop their Disney park expansion for now.
