Hong Kong Disneyland's Tomorrowland is Weird

- Out of all of the Disney theme parks, Hong Kong Disneyland has probably seen the most change and despite being rather lacklustre upon opening, has quickly solidified itself as a highlight in the Disney parks lineup. Except for one problem…

As a regular at Hong Kong Disneyland, our Tomorrowland is indeed weird. Ever since Buzz closed, it really felt like a weird palette of combinations that we hesitantly still call "Tomorrowland"
Astro Blaster will forever remain as my favourite ride in Hong Kong Disneyland
@@funtimetuber093same
they've butchered tomorrowland in california. except for indiana jones i can't think of anything they've added in general for like 40 years that's better than the stuff they've taken away and tomorrowland used to be special. they wrecked the awesome classic white orbiter with a hideous steampunk look they did for a couple weeks and there's so many vacant spaces. even the arcade. i'd take the old skyway or people mover over any of the rinky dink county fair BS attractions at DCA and i hate the star wars sequels so ultra fail.
Agreed I miss the Buzz Lightyears Astro blasters ride.
Out of all the parks to place Ant-man nano blasters why Hong Kong?
@@descendantsanddoctorwhofan5998 Buzz left because HKDL opened up Toy Story Land. It would be an upgrade if HKDL get some iteration of Toy Story Mania.
I've said it before and i'll say it again: The MCU Avengers just don't have a strong enough design aesthetic to carry a theme parc land! You just end up with BORING warehouses and corporate office building. It's like visiting some social media's office in Silicon Valley or something. You want an Asgard, a Wakanda, a Knowhere, something SPECIAL. Not this mundane Stark Entreprise corporate synergy stuff. Avenger Campus looks like you wandered backstage and the Dr Strange corner is like a prop storage spot.
If they want to do a Stark Expo they could theme it to the one Tony's dad made, and make it retro futuristic, where the flying car is just a 50s car with jets instead of wheels, that sort of thing.
A Stark Expo from the 50s is unfortunately too reliant on only two movies in the entire MCU, Iron Man 2 and TFA. If anything, they should style if after a hodgepodge of Marvel's NY like how Universal Orlando does it, but more realized. Have the Sanctum Sanctorum, Daily Bugle, Stark Tower, a Wakandan Embassy, a crash Guardians of the Galaxy spaceship, etc.
I do find it funny how Space Mountain has been replaced with Hyperspace Mountain TWICE.
The gag is Stark Expo works better than Avengers Campus, to me at least. I personally like it as an off-shoot / sub-land of Tomorrowland. My only critique is that there's not much to explore in the land. It's not designed for you to stroll around and soak in the atmosphere and that can only be remedied if they increased the footprint of the land.
A 1930s stark expo land or even park would work so well, allowing Disney to use franchises, plus be references to Epcot and Tomorrowland
Whatever they do, they shouldn't make another "franchise land". What can you do with Frozen Land once Frozen is no longer so popular? Remember, Sears and K Mart were once the largest department store and supermarket companies, respectively, in the entire world. Now they're both dead and change only happens more quickly now than in the past. I guess Marvel and Star Wars have more flexibility than that, but they still don't have as much flexibility as "Fantasyland" or "Adventureland", etc.
It’s still extremely popular here in HK
Idk if I agree. Even though Cars isn’t the most popular franchise within Disney/Pixar, RSR has remained one of the most popular rides at Disneyland since it opened in
Simple. They would just repurpose the showbuildings into another theme or another ride.
@@gabe6495Cars Land is a very particular case though, the reason why we love it is because of the detailed route 66 desert environment and american old town replicas , the franchise isnt what keeps cars land longevity its the land itself. you cannot say the same for avatar star wars marvel themed lands as well as frozen and zootopia lands are purely character and franchise driven which is why they will not age well, they keep trying to make something w the longevity of harry potter but its just not that simple
That’s so dumb? Considering old stuff like Winnie the Pooh or Snow White have rides why can’t frozen be there? It’s popularity have cemented itself into a classic and even someone who never watched frozen could appreciate the Nordic beauty of arendelle anyway and enjoy it.
“Thematically inconsistent” is the tagline of most tomorrow lands these days! It’s the only thing that Disneyland Paris has ever got consistently right (minus their own hyperspace mountain).
I think the plan is still two separate lands, but they don’t blend well at all do they
Exept the buzz darkride in discoveryland 😢
@@ryanleeuwis1602 ok minus hyperspace mountain and Astro blasters… and star tours… and the fact that philharmagic is now there…
Ok I give up
Waiting for Tokyo Disneyland to do their plans for Tomorrowland 🙏
@@richardvlogsdisney they had done everything right in a thematical way, the problem is Disney's recent addiction to IP-based attractions. The same thing will happen now at the Magic Kingdom where the already a bit thematically inconsistent Liberty Square/Frontierland area receives the Splash Mountain retheme.
It really says a lot about the direction of the Disney parks when nearly all of the Marvel attractions worldwide have been re-themes of old attractions or new variations of standard attractions.
I would divide the land into two sections. I would build a Marvel E-ticket (the multiverse ride or something else) to complete the Stark Expo section. Then, use the white and blue motifs to create a clean, sleek space look for the front part of the land with Space Mountian, the Oribitron, and maybe add a new attraction. This would provide a consistent modern aesthetic, allowing it to be kept as one land or split into two. The other option would be to go all-in on IP. Commit to retheming space mountain and building out a Star Wars section, or make the entire thing Marvel.
As I hongkonger, I really miss the car ride that got removed, I used to enjoy it so much when I was a kid😢
This is what I would do:
1) remove the hyperspace mountain overlay. Perhaps add star wars in its own expansion. Something like a mini galaxy’s edge style land but themed to a different planet and perhaps a different time period to be unique from the original galaxy’s edge.
2) double down on the stark expo area, perhaps a “ technology showcase gone wrong ” stageshow of some sort as HKDL has good entertainment.
3) for the plot of autopia I would build a new mini-land. HKDL has many mini lands such as mystic point and now frozen so another one would work with the park design. I would like this to be Wakanda, they could take a plaza themed to a street in the capital. With a “flight of passage” style ride system behind a themed panther mountain. Perhaps taking some ideas from the quinjet concept. The entrance to Wakanda could be a portal behind stark expo.
Honestly, I think they could even make a Shang-Chi inspired land with that portal entrance concept.
Hong kong is too small for that
God I remember when I was a kid I used to go to the stitch thing and tons of kids and little me will sit on some plastic pads and just talk to stitch which was oddly fun but sadly it’s gone now :(
I was just at the park yesterday; the park really feels to have suffered after the Panini. Tomorrowland seems so confusing with all their IPs, half of the land is Marvel, the rest don’t feel important unfortunately. Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point are the only lands in the park where I sense genuine passion and consistency in the theming, would be interesting to see how that pans out for Frozen. The pace of construction for Frozen was hilariously slow, and shutting down the Disneyland Railroad drew away so much atmosphere from the park. Seeing the decorations and events held this year for Halloween made me think of Spirit of Halloween; literally plastic cobwebs and cardboard cutouts.
Most of all, I feel that the cast members have suffered the most. Out of all the cast members I interacted with, 2-3 of them I felt genuine enjoyment and passion, and I feel that is the most telling to me about the state of this park and the company. Hopefully things turn out for the better for HK Disney, I am carefully optimistic about what Disney can bring to the table in the near future.
Pretty sure Star Wars is set 'a long time ago'... not sure how that fits into Tomorrowland.
just the gigantic mice next to normal-sized cinderella is terrifying
Hot take. I think it would be AMAZING if any of the TomorrowLand’s would rebrand/retheme to Tron’s “The Grid”. I keep hoping the grid will be a section in Epcot, but I’m not holding my breath on that. Lolz. But seriously, think about it!! If themed around the grid, it’s still very futuristic, so futuristic in fact that you don’t have to worry about it being outdated in a few years. And plus, Tron is an IP!! They love their IPs as experiences these days!
I remember the Halloween overlay at Space Mountain when I went there as a kid and remember being confused why it wasn't there the next year i visited. I prefer the old Tomorrowland over the one we have now...
I live in Hong Kong and have been to hk Disneyland quite a few times in my life
I like the new hyperspace mountain since I’m a Star Wars fan but other than that I miss the other rides in Tomorrowland
As a citizen of Hong Kong, this place was probably every child’s dream (including me) I love Tomorrowland as it has so much cool stuff that a child will like
If they were going to go full Marvel, they could turn Space Mountain into Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.
In all seriousness, Tomorrowland isn't Tomorrowland for me without Buzz. That needs to come back somehow.
I spent a day in UFO zone and rode 2 times space mountain when I was a kid. The new changes is very cool but i missed the old one.
So, it's becoming "Stuff-Disney-Bought-So-They-Could-Market-To-Boys-Land".
“Land it, safely.” - Klytus.
This past May, for the first time, I rode Hyperspace Mountain at Disneyland. It was awful. I will never ride this version of Space Mountain again.
Oh my god someone covers this topic, I go Hong Kong to see family and of course we always go Disney there so it felt so weird to see it's changes
Feels like this vid came at perfect time since I’ll be going to HK Disneyland next next week LOL
I live in hong kong, and for your information, the stitche attraction has been closed years ago, and has been replaced by a star wars photo-taking area where you take photos with star wars characters
Also the buzz lightyear attraction was changed to an ironman one
Buzz light year changed to Ant-Man
What's worse, the Star Wars meet and greet spot(former Stitch Encounter) and Jedi Training both closed in 2021. Whilst the new Marvel themed stage (where Jedi used to be) offers some fairly underwhelming mini-shows, the meet and greet spot is left vacant till this day.
Ikr wtf happened to the meet and greet it’s just empty
I hope they get back the option on the other plot and build a second park someday.
And I believe in case Stark Expo isn't coming, let's just redesign the entire thing and intergrade it into a very special land!
Tomorrow Land will have the Autopia with longer, better and multi-floor tracks, inside Stark Expo with the unknown ride, and provide HKDL railway a new view to look inside the Autopia section.
Autopia section can take the idea from Test Track's design btw, much more tomorrow.
As long as people still pay money to go to these parks disney wont change anything. Your money makes their decisions.
Theory: the autopia replacement is gonna be Shang chi.
Hell yeah
I suggest to return of original Space Mountain, and bring a new version of Mission Space and restaurant to Tomorrow Land 👌🏼
I have a feeling they'll stick that new Avengers ride coming to DCA in the Autopia spot as the R&D is already covered
Autopia going when I was about to grow tall enough to actually drive the stupid cars makes me depressed so fucking much
it's funny how almost everything you said about space mountain applies to the one in Paris :,)
hyperspace is perm closing in 2024
@@Olschoolvidzwait where did u see this because i’ve been hoping for this for agessss
@@Weejag ally from outsidears and other sources been saying this and they granted the refurbishment and it has already kind of started they installed a prototype for the new lights for the dome I personally think we’ll get more info early 2024 cus it will be a long refurbishment
After watching this video, I understand why Hong Kong Disneyland’s Tomorrowland is so weird. As a person who grew up in Hong Kong, I honestly never saw anything wrong with what’s being done at Tomorrowland. But now it just feels like it’s being split into multiple sections, like there is a Star Wars section and a Marvel section. I just feel like it should just be renamed to: The Multiverse. I think Hong Kong Disneyland’s Tomorrowland can work if they remade Tomorrowland’s most famed attractions and move the Iron Man experience and the Ant man and the Wasp attractions to the Marvel section of the park instead. As for Star Wars. It fits with the whole “Land of the future” theme but it can be a bit out of place so it could be better if they remade space mountain to have both Star Wars and Tomorrowland’s theme in the ride instead of just being a glorified “Hey it’s Star Wars!” Ride.
The confusing part is it wouldn’t be too much work to remove the remaining parts of Tomorrow Land if they wanted to.
Hyperspace Mountain to Guardians of the Galaxy Hyper Jump, Chewbacca meet and greet to Groot, Obitron… some SHIELD or Stark gadget.
Late reply but tbh (and this should have been done as a better tie-in to the Stark Expo) change Hyperspace Mountain at HKDL to Adventures thru Inner Space Mountain (being shrunk down and joining with Ant-Man and the Wasp) inside a snowflake and having to fight against Hydra (or some other Marvel bad guy) instead of retheming Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters.
Though, conversely, I'm surprised they don't have the Guardians of the Galaxy here in HKDL's tomorrowland. Them being part of an overlay of Space Mountain would help reconnect the lost space port theme while also being connected to the Stark Expo mini-theme.
The biggest sad to me was buzz being rebranded with marvel and stitch being removed entirely
I really don't know, but if people like Stark Expo, go all in on Marvel. Including Moon Girl.
If not, have fun with Tomorrow Land with making it IP Land. Just commit to something.
Just rename the area "Sci Fi Port/ Sci Fi Zone"
My grandfather built some stuff in the cafes
I would either divide it into two lands or just have Stark Expo takeover. If the takeover does happen, I would turn Space Mountain into a version of Cosmic Rewind, with the same ride system, but a different track layout.
0:55 Even though I'm a local resident of Hong Kong I still burst into laughter when I hear "copy and paste"
It's quite funny actually, but this copy and paste did save us money on visiting the original one, since we have one copied to Hong Kong.
Or maybe make a whole tva????? Any one????? Gosh I’m genius
Then when Halloween we can see multiverse version of characters at the same point of time
Tva is a big build u can have space if the whole tomorrow land do a complete remake. The tva itself with the courts the statues, the place where pruned goes, and after a water steam? Then we’ll see the building for who he remains I k it’s hard so the time line light thing could be cg. And the food can go for McDonald’s? Like in season 2? Just make things like they did in the series, bring us back to a certain time period in different restaurants
Gosh I’m really genius should I make a report or I should join the imagineer and it come true
This is like a marvel land….(I still like to meet marvel characters there lollll
Original Disney IPs feel like artistic expressions: fun and fantasy and charm. Star Was and Marvel seem forced and foreign. What’s next, Bugs Bunny and Superman?
I mean there is WB World in Abu Dhabi, so you're not far off lol.
Hong Kong Disneyland: The Disney park with the best rebound. Both DCA and Walt Disney Studios Parks have yet to have a good rebound as this park: DCA was going to but Pixar Pier, Avengers Campus, and San Fransokyo Square ruined it and Walt Disney Studios Park never had anything worthwhile(They did with Ratatouille but they cloned that to a much better park).
I liked all those lands at DCA
I gotta say, Hyperspace Mountain is actually my preferred version of the ride 😅
Might be biased because it was how the ride was running the first time I ever rode it, but for a relatively simple projection and laser based overlay I feel like it adds a pretty solid amount of fun and excitement.
I think they should convert quinjet to guardians of the galaxy drop tower ride
I’ve always dislike the whole technology convention theme that the Marvel attractions are going for, the biggest problem is how every building just looks SO generic. They’re like normal buildings that you can find anywhere else, especially in a city like Hong Kong that is famed for having the “metropolis” look.
As a park guest from HongKong, I think we already have enough futuristic looking glass cuboids in our city.
Honestly as not a Marvel fan, I feel like this section of the park completely fails to give anything to visitors who aren’t familiar with the franchise and sucked out all the personality that the original Tomorrowland had
Still the besr channel covering theme parks
THEY KICKED MY BOY BUZZ OUT OF HIS HOUSE
paris discoveryland has the same problem. the outside theme is still roughly the jules verne retrofuture stuff, but two of the rides are star wars, and we have buzz lightyear astro blaster right there at the entrance. i don't even mind the use of IP as much as most disney parks fans, but man, they could try to have some cohesion
Okay if it was dc comics the area remaining tomorrowland would make more sense
Yeah…I miss the old Tomorrowland, especially Buzz. What’s Tomorrowland without Buzz? Why not make an avengers campus and put ant man and iron man there?
perhaps instead of letting hong kong fail like they did at first, and then shooting off too shanghai, they could have built a second park for hong kong disneyland by now and not have to touch Tomorrowland… just a thought
I think they should create a new Tomorrowland instead of stuffing it with marvel ip, cause the current state say people are growing sick and tired of marvel movie like the marvels
It seems like the only international Disney park that's worth it is Tokyo Disney.
That’s a bit harsh, but if you only ever have the opportunity to visit one international Disney Park it should be Tokyo.
Autopia 😭😭😭😞
It's probably best to wait a few years with Tomorrowland (wait and see how much Star Wars and Marvel fail).
I would recommend to focus on another part of the parc for now. For example: improve the Toystory-land.
This almost makes me grateful Universal owns the theme park rights in Florida. I'd be heartbroken to lose the Buzz lightyear Astro Blasters and it's 90's aesthetic. And man am I grateful that Hollywood Studios gets the Star wars stuff because I'd be devastated if they ruined Space Mountain.
Such an IP land they tried to make it its own IP with that movie that flopped you forgot existed until reading this.
In regards of Marvel, I've just been to Paris and it completely ruined the second park there. It wasn't much to start with, but now it has this very weird atmosphere too. To be honest the park was very overcrowded and very warm, but arriving at the Marvel campus the dissappointed was complete. I just started crying and realised that I really didn't wanted to be there and regretted very much spending all that money.
Marvel is something that shouldn't be so prominent in the Disneyparks. Just one attraction as in Epcot is ok, but really not more.😢
Kust screw the Tomarrowland name with one side "Star Wars Starport" or whatever Disneyland Paris will call their rumored miniland expansion with a retheme or replacement of Orbitron, then make the restaurant a PYM Kitchen for Stark Expo just because they are closer to that then what the land started as
Everything and anything Marvel is overrated
*anything and everything from marvel is overrated.
(It’s not)
This insertion of Random IPs isn't unique to HKDL. Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland always suffers the same problem. What was once conceived as being an intergalactic Buck Rogers style Spaceport is now full of random IPs like Monster's Inc and Tron.
Manda-rin? Why can’t Canadians ever pronounce English words properly? It’s like they have never seen a dictionary that provides pronunciation standards.
