Cultural Food Swap: Ugandan Tries Kitfo (Ethiopian Raw Meat) for the time
Join me on this cultural food adventure as I try Kitfo, a traditional Ethiopian dish made from raw meat, for the very first time! As a Ugandan, I'm used to cooked meat, so this is a big deal for me!
In this video, I'll share my honest reaction, thoughts, and feelings about trying raw meat. Will I love it or hate it? Watch to find out!
Kitfo is a popular Ethiopian dish made from raw meat (usually beef), spiced with chili peppers, garlic, ginger, and other spices. It's often served with a sourdough flatbread called *injera*.
It started from italo-ethiopian 1880 war and eating raw meat was a strategy....because they never wanted to make fire which could make smoke and warm the Italians......
Let me know in the comments if you've tried Kitfo before, or if you have any other cultural food swap ideas!

The habit dates back to the Abyssinian-Adal War, a century-long sporadic military conflict between the Ethiopian Empire and the Somali Adal Sultanate in the 16th century. During the Ethiopians' early Somali defeats, soldiers began consuming raw meat as a tactical measure. As Somali troops moved towards the Blue Nile and Lake Tana, Ethiopian soldiers sheltering from the Somali Adal army began eating raw meat at night. They feared the smoke and flames would reveal their location. This military strategy of avoiding detection became a delicacy during the Conquest of Abyssinia, and Ethiopians' taste of raw meat grew from there!
Thank you so much for this amazing information......we really needed to know all this....
i hate to break it to you but that is wrong and there are a lots of speculations but one thing that is right is that it is because of war we started to eat rawmeat just to avoid detection and we have fought a lot of wars with outsiders and even eachother before the adal war so it is not because of the adal war we started eating raw meat we have started long before the adal war
@henokfasil1789 I decided to sit here and learn...... thanks alot for this information
@@EatingTheAfricanWay and next time you eat Ethiopian food try to balance the amount of injera with the food you r eating because if u use to much injera the sourness will over power or if u use little injera the food will taste over flavored. But u do u and eat as your preference. Thank you for trying Ethiopian food.
@henokfasil1789 Thank you for this....am so greatful....I'll try it next time....
I love the way Habesha people spread their culture and food whichever country they migrate to. As a Kenyan living in the UK, I visit Ethiopian restaurants in London and when in Nairobi, I get them too and when I hear their music play, it brings certain joy in my heart.
Wow....am sure Habesha food became part of you..... happy to have you here..
The restaurant manager gave real Habesha welcome, I appreciate him❤
Thanks for being here..
The manager seems a good man.. much love from Kenya, new sub
Thank you so much... manager is really a free person...
African cuisine is amazing from west to east. Unlike what people think, most of the dishes in most African countries have a story of health benefits. I grew up eating moringa leaves. Now the white man just discovered the health benefits. I’d have love to hear about the benefits of eating raw meat from the Ethiopian perspective. I’m confident it has health benefits because Ethiopians are in shape! Let’s stick to our African roots. Great video!
Thanks alot for sharing with us.......from what I saw...raw meat wasn't part of their meals...during the war with Italian...they never wanted to make smoke because they were hiding....that's where the introduction of eating raw meat started from....until now..
@@EatingTheAfricanWaythat's speculation! Raw meat is okay in many cultures across Africa and the entire world
@muregofelix8328 Thanks alot for this..

I am from Mbarara, but definitely I will soon come for it. I have been seeing it on other channels people eating it in Ethiopia, but I didn't know that it is available here in Uganda.
Thanks for watching.....they are so many places around Kansanga and kabalagala where you can go and enjoy this food....
Nice small talk😂 The truth is that southern Ethiopians have always consumed raw beef, and a few hundred years ago the Habeshas copied them. One must remember all these origin stories are just stories. The most prevalant one though is how in the 1500's* Ottoman snipers hindred Abyssinian soldiers from making fires to cook their meat. But even this story has it's origin with the Niyyah Kibbeh dish of the middle east. Yet the Soomaalis have come up with an oral account with differing details: claiming the Adalite Ahmed Gran (an Ethiopian Muslim) forced Ethiopian Christians to eat raw meat. Claiming Adal as a Soomaali sultanate and passing around fantasy stories in an attempt to degrade Ethiopians is crazy.
Wow....all I can say is...however much am doing these videos....I learn alot from this comment section..... thanks alot for taking time and write down this important information....
@@EatingTheAfricanWay No problem brother. Keep doing what you do.

@@EatingTheAfricanWay, I like the smell but not the taste. I prefer tea.
@ayawa5321 yeah the scent from it is good..... me too am mostly a tea person.....
Tbh you're risking tapeworm infection everytime you eat that. That's why it's a delicacy
Thanks for watching..
I want to taste that also
Hahaha.....you can visit them and try it
The history of Raw meat is not what he says on this Video. The Ethnic Amhara who ruled Ethiopia for generations often have to fight the outside invaders to preserve Ethiopia. Because of that the Amhara Neftegna(Armed men) did not want to give their location to enemy by cooking meat with fire. They don't want any smoke the result of cooking meat to tell the enemy where their location was . So ... by keeping this in mind , the Amhara Soldiers ovide cooking the meat and got use to eating it raw . This is the real start of how Ethiopians Eeat raw meat.
Eeeh..... thank you so much for taking time and write down everything....I do appreciate..
Ye leba ayne derk alu debub new sega mebelaw ....yetelemedewn teretachun
This seems to be a very hard language to learn..
As a European I quite like raw meat dishes like Carpaccio (very thinly sliced beef with a lemon dressing), Steak Tartare (finely chopped beef with raw egg and capers) and Mett (raw spiced minced pork). I especially like the last because besides European I'm also German.
I think that is more easy for someone who is trying it for the first time.... I want to try it....... Thanks for sharing...
Ajera i cn eat anytime any day

History is okay, everybody knows started early, 16 century, Adal War of Somali sultan ahmed ghazi, and Abysinian empire. There's nothing Shaned about it. lol, it's all in Ethiopian books.
By the way it's not Halal meat in muslim context it would be helpful not to mislead people so they choose if they want to.
Thank you for this.....you know people share what they know....or what they were taught..... that's why we need to go deep and do our own research...... but am here learning alot...
changing from Somalis Adal Sultanate to Italians? lmao OKEY!
I really have no idea....I was trying out the food... thanks for the information..
i cannot, NO. Can the human body handle raw flesh?
It can handle it more than you can imagine.....I tried it for the first time....and my body was okay ....
VENTILATED
🤣🤣
Do you smell the blood?
Noo...you can't even smell it.......
Please please stop eating raw meat.
I am from Ethiopia but I don't eat raw meat because you can get illnesses from it like pathogens salmonella e_coli or yersinia etc.
The story he is trying tell is 1/2 true but he miss the years and the history behind it.
From 1528 to 1543 war between Christian Northern (Abbissnya) and the Adal Muslim kingdom .
Because of Portuguese help northern won the war but they keep it eating raw meat.
If any body want to know about it you can read Conquest of Abyssinia.
Thank you so much for the information......we are here to learn as we find out truth....

@marieannie9505 nkugambye....
you have some what a comedian type of face😆😆, any ways, after a raw meat, we Ethiopians drink something of alcoholic content, and it makes the meat stable within the stomach and in addition it helps the stomach of the digesting process. if you didn't like to take any of the alcoholic drinks, taking sprite, or Ethiopian "AMBO TEBEL" is advisable
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I didn't know I have a comedian like face.... thanks for the advise...next time I'll try it...

The man looks Tigrayan, but I’m not sure why he chose to promote Ethiopian cuisine that conflicts with his own culture. In Tigrayan culture, eating raw meat is highly forbidden. Additionally, the Bible prohibits the consumption of raw meat (check Exodus 12:9).
Thanks for watching...some of us are here to learn...
😂😂😂😂 wow the inner racist is coming out.
@@EatingTheAfricanWaybro eating raw meat is just common to most christian ethiopians at least. Take most of the comments with a grain of salt. Don't believe everything bro.
