Hi, my name is Jen I am 44 and live in Connecticut with my husband and 8 year old son. I am a stay-at-home Mom and full-time RUclipsr with a degree in business with a focus in marketing. Before leaving work when my son was born, I was a commercial lender at a bank. I also worked at Sephora and Macy's doing visual merchandising.
I have dry skin with some hyperpigmentation and fine lines. I love natural makeup looks but occasionally go outside my comfort zone a little bit. On my channel you'll find lots of videos about drugstore makeup and drugstore dupes (those are my favorites to film!) but I also review high-end makeup as well. I recently closed my afterpay account. It made it too easy to spend. Now if I need something, I'll think about it, budget for it. My skincare and makeup has got out of control, just because I could pay it off in a few weeks installments. Going to the door daily for packages became like a high. And I was perfectly fine before that. I budget well, never had a credit card and saved. I feel so much better now. And I appreciate your comment about if you were to lose your job.. I remember my mother would have 1 or 2 of each product in her make up bag, and that did her perfectly well.

Yes, in everything, people want a bigger house, a newer car, a more handsome and richer husband, cleverer kids... but be grateful for the good people you do have
My low/no buy plan is that I can replace staples that I use up (mascara, brow pencil, etc). If I want anything else, I need to get rid of two other similar things (lipstick, blush, eyeshadows, etc). Since I'm a hoarder who can't bear to throw out any makeup, I won't be buying much new! 😂
It also helps that hubby retired for good in May, so the only money coming in is his military pension, since we've decided to defer Social Security for now. Suddenly the $50 palette I'd have bought without a second thought isn't such a must-have.

Good point. Some of the packaging kills me. I imagine all of those Tirtir red 'eggs' and the boxes they come in, in the landfills.
Sometimes I go to a store like Ulta, test what I think I just have to have ….and “Meh”, not so great. Also, like you, truly looking at my “stash” allows me to realize that another whatever it is will just end up in that drawer. At 72 years young I really still enjoy makeup, but really, how many blushes does one woman need. So now I try to use up a product before new purchases and I end up rediscovering my own products. Thanks for all of the amazing work you put into this community, Jen.❤💄
62 and also try to use up products before a new purchase. The only exception is mascara which the FDA recommends replacing every 2 to 4 months after the first use.

i’m not on a no-buy but something that’s helped is not NOT buying the new thing, but waiting a while before picking it up. just because i want something doesn’t mean i need to get it right now. i can wait a few weeks/months before picking up a new blush, for example. and that allows me to see what i really still want after the time has passed for the immediate hype to die down. it’s hard to not be influenced sometimes 😅
Yes, products are generally sold for at least a few months before being discontinued. (Unless it's a special edition.) One can usually wait a few weeks and whatever it is will still be available.
@@laur83 I agree. That impulse to buy certainly changes when you wait. Then you realize that you have similar products already.
The other advantage for me of waiting is that initially I tend to hear a lot about how great the products are, and after some time passes the negatives start coming up (if the thing actually ever gets mentioned again).

I’ll put something in my basket and then put my phone down and do something else. I have stuff in baskets all over: Sephora, Ulta, Walmart etc. When I look at the basket again, prices have gone up down sold out, etc. I also have a mental breakdown of what I won’t spend above. Period. $10bucks for mascara Ten bucks is high end for me most mascaras work fine. I play with the basket and seldom buy all that was in it. 😂 But it’s a nice feeling to put it in the basket, almost as satisfying as buying. 😂 It’s nuts I know but it works for me.
I do the same thing! And by the time you come back to it later, you don't want it quite as much. I'm an impulse buyer and knowing that is half the battle!
this is such a great concept for a video. It's novel in that you're asking yourself to be creative and thoughtful with what you already have. It goes beyond a "dupe" video. I love the idea of challenging new releases with existing products. I appreciate that this premise of this video is to get excited about what we already have. Can we recreate desired looks without buying the new release or even just the cult classic that's way too pricey? Totally cool idea. Thanks, Jen. So many creators are luring our hard earned dollars and you're helping bring us back down to earth!!
I’ve never bought one high end product and I’m 52 years old. That’s saved me a lot over the years. 😊
Nice swatch party video of all the alternative. It would be interesting to repeat this kind of video from time to time.
I decluttered all my makeup today, ONLY kept 3 lip liners, 2 lipsticks and one mascara. I am also resisting the urge to buy more just to have it, this video was just timed right for me 😅

I try to always practice mindful consumption. I just put the things that catch my eye on a wishlist that I revisit every month or two. If I still feel a pull towards anything, I compare to what I already have in my collection. If I don't have anything similar already, I leave it on the wishlist and wait for a sale. If I have something in my collection that seems similar, I make a point of wearing it to scratch the itch. So far, the system has worked well for me.
if you are on no buy, simply pull the old stuff out of your drawers. You will be suprised what you find in complete new condition 😂, so was I when I yesterday realized i have already purchased a certain, expensive eyeshadow palette which i just wanted to buy again 😮

I like the idea of looking through what you have, to find what the newest releases are, after all there are only so many colors that can be done without repeating. This is a great way to reduce the amount of products I am spending on and accumulating in my collection.
I love this month/series. Personally I find it more difficult to not purchase less expensive products, those Saltair for 9$? o0o0o, you have such will power!
I'm very happy to see this type of video, because we only have one face, the makeup expires, and we all have preferences, products that work best for us. It's a very realistic approach, which I appreciate and have great respect for 💛. I did a huge declutter of my entire house, 8 months ago, I threw away a lot of expired makeup, that I didn't even know I had, it hurt my heart to see that I I didn't use what I had and I became aware of only buying what suits me, according to my tastes (not according to the trend of the moment). This week, I made a Sephora order, because I am missing some essentials that I wear regularly, I found the total high on the neck, telling myself that I am therefore missing a lot of things. I went to see my last Sephora order, it's been a year and a half since I bought any makeup 😆 the reason why my bill was high, spread over time, is very reasonable.
I agree with you on the new sephora sets. If I want something, I'll just buy the full size.

Thank you so much for this video. Your whole channel is so inspiring. I have been considering doing my own channel, but just don't have the confidence yet to pull that trigger. Not to mention that I need to learn some editing and filming skills.
Anyway, what I wanted to tell you is just THANK YOU for having No Buy July! I lost my job a couple months ago and really can't afford any extra makeup right now. But, DANG, if I don't want that dopamine hit from a quick makeup purchase. You have truly inspired me to go back through my collections to see what I've got and what I may "need." That is also helping me get rid of some old and/or unused makeup. Thanks so much for all you do!
I've decided to swear off of cream and liquid blushes. Powder blush just stays on my skin a lot longer. However, I still love my Nudestix bloomies blushes and my Saie liquid blushes so I'll continue wearing those.
Sephora has lost the plot. Why would we spend $50-$60 on trial sizes mostly? The answer: we wouldn’t. The corporate greed is bonkers. They keep raising prices on everything and the reason is they aren’t getting the blame for it. They know uninformed people are just gonna blame the president who has no power over the cost of products and services. Well, I’m not buying a lot of things that are going crazy on the price. Enough is do that, we will see prices fall.

Absolutely. I say this all the time. People who complain about how expensive things are only know how expensive they are because they buy, buy, buy! I have a neighbor who just spent $215 on makeup the other day, and then told me that they are getting calls from creditors. Seriously?
I did a little buy at the first week in July when I started the no buy. It was a powder foundation half price. I am done until Fall. 😊

I'm really glad you mentioned the exorbitant cost of those Sephora favorites packages. I usually love those and have purchased a couple, but this time around they were just priced so high that it was an automatic "NO WAY!" for me.
I appreciate you sharing your no-buy with us. I gotta say, for some very strange reason very little has interested me lately. I was also interested in the Sephora kits until I saw the price. The value just isn’t there for me.
Truth be told I can buy whatever I want. Not bragging......just setting the tone for my next sentence.

In a similar vein to no-buy, how about a ‘repurposing’ video. I watched a Sarah Rose where she used one eyeshadow palette for brows, blush, bronzer, setting powder, lipstick and oh yeah, eyeshadow. I was so impressed when you used a Milani lipstick as blush. It was a Proustian moment when I remembered my grandma doing that. You did a great similar video where you solved all sorts of wrong color problems, how about one where you use makeup in unintended ways?
Jen, you are a gem! This video surely is helping us on the no-buy July commitment. Although, I did slip a bit when I learned that GXVE had their products on sale, so two of their eyeliners went into my Sephora cart. 😅

Totally agree about the Sephora sets! They are very expensive and not all the products are mini, most of them are samples! I think you can find real mini/travel size products in the same store and with a price to the equivalent average price of one product of the set!

I've been using clear lip liners (Rimmeland Maybelline), so I don't need any new ones for now. I'm waiting to use up more makeup products before buying anything new. Same with skincare.

@@Silverwingz007 … it’s nice! There are some glittery shades in there I don’t care for and from the reviews I thought it would’ve been more neutral but it pulls warm on my olive skin tone but I don’t mind. Overall all it’s a beautiful palette.
Jen--i had a Sephora gift card so i spent it on three of the Hourglass liquid blushes. They are gorgeous, especially for mature skin. They have a refined finish, and the colors can be as sheer or as bold as one wants as they are buildable. So, i caved but am glad i did. Now i have to try to resist those Rhode pocket blushes........ the struggle is real :)

@@JenPhelps They really are super pretty, esp for my skin (late 50's). The closest drugstore dupe from a finish perspective that came to mind is the Phy. Formula diamond filler mineral wear liquid blush. A little less pigmented than the Hourglass but has that subtle sheen, with easy application and blend. Surprised no one talks about them--walmart has them for the best price ($11) and both shades are so pretty. I have the Loreal lumi and love them too--the phy formula just feels more refined like the Hourglass.

Hmm...that's a good question, I'm not sure! I definitely am curious about those Hourglass blushes...and the Too Faced single shadows. But I'm guessing by then, there will be a bunch of new stuff out that'll make me forget about these anyway! 😂😂😂

We are with you in this No Buy July. This feels the same as when I went on a no sugar diet. It was hard at first but it got easier. By the end I felt so good!
Since moving from Long Island to rural TN, I haven't been wearing makeup much. I'm on a no buy life until I use up all the makeup I like and only repurchase what I love.
The Ole H lip treatments are fabulous. I have Chocolate and Strawberry want Citrus and def look at Crème Brûlée. when you are in the market try one or sample at Ulta

Great advice as usual, Jen. Thanks! 💖Another dupe for the Makeup by Mario blushes in powder form are the L'Oreal Infallible blushes. The colors are bold and blendable, and a little goes a long way. So even if you got them at the height of their hype, you probably still have them now.

I said in the beginning that I'm not telling anyone to not buy new makeup...it's a personal decision for me because I haven't even used some things that I've gotten recently. I keep buying things and using them once and not having a chance to use them again. So I just needed a pause. You all are free to do whatever you want.
@JenPhelps Oh yes I totally agree! I've been buying very little, especially with all those new blushes coming out. Those are not exciting to me. I did find it very ironic in a funny way how my beautybay order got delivered right as I started the video.

Nothing like a no buy to show us what our weaknesses are LOL. I'm also obsessed with lip liners. I've been trying to find one to match each of my lipsticks because I find that combination to be so long wearing. I was blown away by Amazon's Italia Deluxe 12 pack of lip liners. The reviews were true. I figured if I got 2 or 3 that worked for my skin tone I would be thrilled for the price point. Instead 6 of them are cool toned and 6 of them are warm toned so I was able to use 6. There were shades I didn't have in my collection already and matched up well with my lipsticks so I'm overjoyed. It's worth checking out if you're not on a no buy or shopping on prime day.

I’m so glad you are holding off ! I can’t buy a lot and it’s like window shopping. And I only buy things I don’t have. Or colors. It’s a problem for some. I can see. I see prices on it all. And yes they are way too high. It’s crazy. And perfume samples were $25 and now it’s $50+

LOVE THIS ❤ I'm on a low buy, and have been LOVING using my existing makeup. I've been using things I thought I never would...like glitter eyeshadow...and discovered I've got some beautiful glitters that deserve their time in the sun. I've got so many beautiful colors to wear, I don't need, or even want anything else. I'm now enjoying the creative process in my makeup, which is the whole point, at least in my world anyway😅❤🥂💃

I’ve started doing this as well! I always tell myself that I have to finish what I have at home before I buy anything new, especially when I have more than 1 of an item. I’ve been slowly but surely getting through all of my lipglosses 😅
For me it’s unbelievable how in the US you have to stop yourself from buying new stuff, when in other counties buying a simple shirt it’s a luxury.
I want to start making content for makeup, but I don’t know how to do it without keep buying the new stuff
It’s funny so many of us are realizing we only use 5 shadows at max and rest are just not being used. Same with lipstick blush mascara etc. I have also condensed my collection significantly and I feel so happy using my whole collection!

I LOVE the OLEHENRIKSEN lip balm formula! I bought 2 tubes of the limited edition lingonberry shade last winter. Super comfortable and not sticky😊

I'm following you with no buy this month. But, I did get the Fenty Soft Lit Foundation in Shade 150 (we are shade twins). I was eyeing it in June and it is a perfect shade match and great for my dry skin!

I’m 150 in Fenty and love it (bought it last weekend) I’ve been using missha 21 and just got the 23 for summer. Jen helped me realize I have a greyish undertone. I’m using these as my color matches from here on out.

videos like these are perfect. The other day I made a list of all the eyeshadow palettes I own. Then I highlighted the ones that really exited me. It was only a third. I reach for the same 3 blushes. I'm literally wearing the same lipstick everyday in the summer. Yeah...don't need new things right now.
