Going to the store My list 1. Bleach 2. Mask 3. Freezer paper 4. Paper towel 5. Rubber gloves 6. sharp knife 7. Eye protection 8. Cheap shirts I get in line and the cashier looks at me in a weird way. I look at my items and realize that this looks so wrong. I immediately grab some gum to fix the problem. Woah that was a close one.
I used to do custom bleach tshirts a long time ago in hight school. Another thing to note about bleaching is depending on the manufacturer you can get different color from bleaching different shirts (example, three black shirts from different places, some bleached tan, some just white-ish, but some had amazing reds. This was my favorite to use because of the vibrant color instead of different shades). Another things is instead of waiting for the desired color difference, which can damage the materiel in the long run if a very very light color is the desired result, diluting the following sprays ( I usually have 4 to 5 bottles ranging between 10% 25% 50% or 75% or any variation in between) at different ratios can speed up this process since you do not want to leave the bleach on for more than 5-8 minutes to guarantee the structural integrity of the T-shirt for continuous washes. Mixing acrylic diluted dies can be a fun way to add a splash of color to your designs. By diluted I mean with fabric paint mix you can get, a product found at any fabric store or any craft store that you can mix with acrylic that makes it permanent on fabrics that does not leave a crusty exterior it's very fun to work with. And is washable super ++++. The reason I liked to use this instead of generic dies is VARIETY you can achieve by mixing the many many acrylic colors available. This was nostalgic and fun to watch thank you so very much. You should try this fun out with pants (blue jeans take the best) hats, purses, and even fabric shoes. It holds up much better (the bleach and the paint mix) than any normal diy or sharpie version I've seen
i should have read this before starting. Bleach weakned the cotton fibres and now i have giant holes when taking off the freezer paper! :( - 5-8 minutes to guarantee the structural integrity --- damn i kept drying and reapplying for 3 hrs total!
Interesting comment that I've read over several times. I'm a little confused about what you mean by the "bleach and paint mix". Are you mixing bleach with paint or are you bleaching an area and then coloring it with a mixture of regular acrylic paint and fabric paint? Also, have you worked with leather (thin/jacket) bleaching at all? I see your post is 4 years old, so here's to hoping you see my question. It's surprisingly difficult to get detailed answers on bleaching processes.
@@dreamingrightnow1174 I've never worked on leather sorry. But the 'paint mix' is acrylic mixes with 'fabric medium'. It's a product that you mix with acrylic to make your own fabric paint (I find you can get the finish you want much better) and you have all the colors of acrylic to play with in what every amount you want to mix. Much better than a container of fabric paint. I sometimes use just bleach, some bleach and paint mix', and some I just paint. Depends on the fabric and the design
@@redb.5533 That's amazing, I've never heard of mixing bleach and paint. Do you have a link to your work? I'd love to see it. Thanks for the tip on the fabric paint.. What's the medium? Is it floetrol by any chance?
I'm a caregiver and I accidentally bleached one of my residents black the shirts.. his birthday is this weekend and even though he said to throw the shirt away, I kept it, thinking I could make it better. thanks to this video I'll have a crazy outerspace tshirt to make for a bday gift. woohoo! thanks man!
For many years I was an airbrush artist. I painted many many shirts and jackets with stencils, masking and just "freehand". The stenciling technique with airbrush is almost identical to this bleach technique. I am surprised I never heard of this before in all my years of airbrushing but really I am even MORE surprised I never figured it out on my own!!!! I always wear black clothing. I follow Einstein's clothing philosophy. I simply buy many many identical outfits. I never have to pick what to wear they are all the same. On several occasions when cleaning around the house, I will use some brand of a spray bottle cleaner that contains bleach. Later I notice speckles and splashes of white on my black work clothes, even sometimes noting where I was leaning against the edge of a sink that blocked the spray and left a hard edge. I always was annoyed by this, and it NEVER occurred to me that this could be used for something artistic and practical with very little effort and not much mess at all. One suggestion I have for a much much easier masking method is to use cheap adhesive backed shelving paper as a masking material. It is easily applied, easily removed and the adhesive never leaves residue on the shirt or clothing. It also sticks very well and prevents any bleeding of paint, or in this case bleach. I use to buy tons of this stuff for airbrushing tshirts and jackets. It worked so well and wasn't too expensive. Of course shelving paper is going to be a little more expensive than the freezer paper, but the benefit is worth it. It eliminates the need for an iron to seal it to the shirt, it can be easily repositioned and it allows you to REUSE patterns cut out of it. Simply peal the patters up and stick them on the shelving backing paper and you could probably do a few copies before needing to make another pattern. The shelving paper is usually a plastic material that is waterproof and wouldn't be effected by the bleach. I also found saving the patterns would allow me to reapply some elements to alter the design. Another trick that MIGHT work with bleach (can't wait to try this. I no longer airbrush) is to cut stencils from cardboard or other materials, either something more permenant like a cheap plastic sheet from hobby store, or a one off like cardboard. Just hold it down over the shirt. The bleach most like won't bleed under something stiff. Also you could apply a light adhesive spray. Not a permenant adhesive. I used that technique a lot airbrushing repeatable designs over and over. I cut out stencils from transparent plastic, sprayed a coat of adhesive, stuck it tight to the shirt and airbrush. Then peel it up, put another one down etc etc. Awesome technique. Really enjoyed this.
Vernon Zehr thank you so much for all the tips! I love the t ip on spraying adhesive to plastic shapes. Ive seen an artist who does that with letter shapes and creates phrases on tshirts. Also the shelving paper is sn awesome tip. Ive been told vinegar stops the action immediately but the mix of the two substances isnt a good thing. There is an artist named arejaemci who uses the vinegar outside and his stuff is awesome. Thank you again!
I used to bleach pictures on my blue jeans back In the seventys. I did it free hand though but the use of the paper is quite ingenious! Back in the day silk screen designs were done in a similar fashion with light sensitive Mylar film and swivel knives. The knack of cutting the film without scoring the sheet underneath was quite an acquired skill and needs loads of patience and exceptionally sharp blades. Great video! Thank you...you are a true artist:)

Yeah that was a great comment worthy of a fun fact section for this vid. Make the stencil first before ironing it on to the shirt. The Russian hacker design was so cool while the holes created was a complete waste of a shirt.
I tried this today 1-23-16 and it turned out good for a first try. Like other people said I cut out the design first then put it on the shirt. I used a Gilson 100% cotton black shirt from Walmart for $3. The bleach made it more redish but I still think it look cool.
Pure bleach tends to leave clothing more orangey yellow. dilute the bleach more, maybe 60:40 water:bleach, and apply it more. I got straight bleach on my black shirt while cleaning once and it just went orange (I didn't even notice so it didn't get washed off right away)
PRO TIP: Test the bleach on a small portion of your shirt before you spend half an hour cutting out your stencil just to find that your shirt has some sort of color treatment and the bleach doesn't work.
Hi This is my firs comment and it was just to say that I think your vids are one of the best, they give me a calm and understanding feel during the talking, I also tried this project myself with a cross bow and it turned out really we'll with a nice orangey tint

I have an idea! How about furthering the galaxy design with some fabric paint? You could probably do some color layers, then a very fine mist with bleach to create something of a nebula
NumberSixteen BusShelter if you're doing a one tone image, then that should work, but if you're doing multiple you will end up having to cut it out while on the shirt if you want to keep the stencil in place
If you are brave skip to 2.50 and use regular paper. I drew and cut out a butterfly, used masking tape to secure the paper over the t-shirts and sprayed with the bleach solution, removed the paper, let it dry and washed and the result was beautiful. Thank you very much. I am so happy with the results. Note that I have been using bleachbalk my life to keep my whites white and to desinfect my bathroom, so I am not afraid to use bleach. SirWasssabii It's easy man, When a mom shirt loves a dad bleach they get together and fuck up your favorite pair of clothes because bleach. Now I know your gonna need some time to process this and I beg you when practicing safe bleach please use a cond... plastic sheet to protect yourself.
What if you cut out the outline before applying it onto the shirt. This would remove the risk of cutting too deep. Cut in multiple layers, so you can peel off parts to change the brightness.
Oh my stars, this is such a neat idea. I've seen people use bleach pens to create patterns but I never thought of doing this. How cool!! Thanks for sharing!
I'm impressed Ben, yours look amazing. So far my black socks and old black shirt only turned a vague brown. The color change was only visible after quite some bleach which meant that sharp images were impossible.
@DomDosh: I live in Austria. I think I will try what thar other guy posted a couple threads down - the one who does spray art on T-Shirts. He wrote that he uses self-adhesive foil. Those are easy to get - either in the office supply shop (think foil to cover books) or in the hardware store (the stuff you can use to cover up old furniture), cheap, and you don't have to iron. Also, I'm not so sure if the ironing doesn't release all sorts of awful fumes, so using something self-adhesive might not only be faster but also safer health-wise.
Just stumbled across this great little vid that really inspired me to try this myself. Funny how i was just thinking about making a few custom shirts but never really like the plastic coatings i thought I might have to get. This solution is so easy and allows so much personal creativity. So awesome! Oh yes... love the gentle guitar work of yours. All in all the whole viewing has left me feeling remarkably calm... 👍
***** It was a class project supervised by two teachers and the bleach was super diluted. They made sure nothing wrong happened, some stupid kid didn't drink it or anything. But yeah they let us use it.
this was such a fun project to do with the fam (we were very safe and had all the proper protective gear on. we have actual gas mask.) IT WAS SOMUCH FUN! I made an awesome DoctorWho Tardis in space! these have such a vintage minimalistic look to them!
I tried this today and the bleach didn't leave the slightest mark. it was a dark purple shirt and I made sure it was 100% cotton. After trying for a while I said screw it and poured a puddle of undiluted bleach In a puddle in the middle of the shirt and let it go intill it was completely dried out. still no effect
probably the best way would be to use photo emulsion and silk screen but that costs money and the method here is super cheap. in this tutorial he lays the wax paper on the shirt then cuts it therefore actually cutting the shirt!!! cut the paper first on a cutting board and then iron it onto the shirt. you could even use contact paper which has an adhesive on one side to avoid having to iron at all. or you could use shaped sponges as stamps if you need quick repeating patterns or symbols.
I agree, cutting on the shirt is bound to go wrong, as it shows in the video. I'd rather try this with sticker-paper and pre-cut, covering up the edges with a thin line of paper to prevent premature bleaching through the cuts.
Two things: 1.) I'll be attempting this stenciling technique within the hour and am honestly sort of embarrassed about just how excited I am to get started. 2.) I recently came across a shot of your "Shuttle and Stars" t-shirt after doing a Google Image search having stencils, printing or similar. I remember being annoyed with getting such an "obviously store bought" item in my diy search results and never imagined my assessment anything other than the absolutely correct one and despite my having wanted one for my very own, let it slip my mind for always. Then this video especially once I knew for certain that I was seeing the "diy" making of a store bought thing. anyway, I'm pissed off at your talent, jealous of your results and couldn't be happier about either dipshit emotional response. thanks for proving me wrong, teaching me a new thing, producing an above average video and doing all of the aforementioned stuff so well that I am immediately going to try to ripoff my favorite parts of all you've done. Thanks
I've got a bunch of stencils from when I used to do a lot of street art. I've painted some on white tshirts years ago, but this makes me want to dig them out n do some on dark t's now. Thanks for sharing!
just found your channel today.. subbed immediately. I used spray adhesive and card stock like ten years ago. I really like your methods. Thanks for sharing!
I was laying in bed wondering how I could use bleach to create designs that look like batik.... And then I got up to set my alarm and this was on my RUclips playlist. I'm going to start experimenting with this technique tomorrow. Thank you so much... I think it's weird how phones can read your mind these days LOL
not sure if anyone has suggested this yet, but they make paper cutters which are basically extra small ceramic razors. they don't usually cut all the way though the paper. they just score it so that it can be torn easily. they look like magic markers, and the blade is so small that it looks like a grain of sand stuck to the end of the tool. i used them before and they're not perfect, but they might be more well suited to this project than a full sized hobby knife.

wouldnt it be possible to just cut the shapes before ironing the paper on to the shirt?
+mantizz yep that can work.
it can be done that way, but when doing complex designs it's best to cut after ironing the paper on as to keep edges aligned.
I was face palming pretty hard at him cutting on the shirt
smh
Babby Babbyson That's how it's done.
It is better to cut first before putting it on the shirt, you run the risk of cutting the shirt.

mist8k ,HouseholdHacker, Rob and Corinne from ThreadBanger are pretty good too.

I really like that rocket design
Seriously awesome. No expensive kits, no bs. Simple, effective, easy. Thanks man.
I tried this yesterday and this works fantastically!!!! Was very easy to do; hardest part was figuring out what design to use!
why not cut the image before placing ?
NumberSixteen BusShelter if you're doing a one tone image, then that should work, but if you're doing multiple you will end up having to cut it out while on the shirt if you want to keep the stencil in place
Yeah I could cut it first. You can cut all the parts and iron it in place removing the pieces as you go. A lot easier that way.
Wow this is so cool. I plan on making a few custom ones and when my friends say "where'd you get that" I'll tell them I made it xD

I love it...even the last one...because that's how there wearing them now days...with all the cuts! Thank you for sharing
Great tutorial! I appreciate that you speak clearly and only say and show what is necessary. You should do a diy video on how to make a diy video!
This is awesome Ben. Definitely going to try this out. Thumbs up and shared!
Too much work for this :(
I don't think people would really do this kinda thing.
You Got Wasted I'm actually doing this as I comment. I think you just may be a little lazy.
You Got Wasted no its not, lol u sound very lazy xD
i said i was and did

Holy shit that space shuttle one though. I want that. I might just ha e to do this

Oh my stars, this is such a neat idea. I've seen people use bleach pens to create patterns but I never thought of doing this. How cool!! Thanks for sharing!
I WANT THAT ROCKET SHIRT!
you dont actually need to trace an image. you can just cut the paper to 8.5 by 11 and print directly onto the paper side. i do this all the time
ASHLEY KROLIKOWSKI it won't get stuck or anything?
If you cut it straight enough it wont. I've tried it on a few different printers. Just be careful and use common sense.
I've always thought Bleach was only for drinking, thanks mate!
Where has this comment been all my life?
I'm impressed Ben, yours look amazing.
So far my black socks and old black shirt only turned a vague brown.
The color change was only visible after quite some bleach which meant that sharp images were impossible.
I had no idea this was a thing until today. Your shirts and instructional video are both superb. I will be trying this over the weekend.
Cheers!
Tips for what to use instead of freezer paper? I've never heard of such a thing and don't think it exists in my country.
TheFeldhamster I have the same problem :/
TheFeldhamster i think its the same as wax paper or parchment paper
TheFeldhamster do you live in the uk? Coz I've never heard of it either.
no its paper with plastic coating on one side, you can look up how to make it yourself
Also, I'm not so sure if the ironing doesn't release all sorts of awful fumes, so using something self-adhesive might not only be faster but also safer health-wise.
i live a simple life.
i see bleach, i click.
"And quickly DABbed away"
Oh shit lol
Saxa-san I gazed the last person that spoke like that with me
Saxa-san -I'm not english so i thought "gased" was about "gas", gasoil :v, so i said "gazed" so everyone understand :c-
Just stumbled across this great little vid that really inspired me to try this myself.
just want to say that i love finding new things and ideas and this bleaching method is 10 outa 10.
Use Q-tip and draw whatever you like. You don't need to go through all these trouble. I design some of my shirt.
+Aapi SaCha aww good idea i might try that later thank you hahahah :D
Really? Can you just use the diluted bleach on a q tip?
+Aapi SaCha seems pretty legit. I might try that one out just for fun ^^
+Aapi SaCha I remember doing art in kindergarten with bleach and a q-tip
yeah I don't know why it wouldn't work with shirts.
*****
It was a class project supervised by two teachers and the bleach was super diluted.
They made sure nothing wrong happened, some stupid kid didn't drink it or anything. But yeah they let us use it.
could you please tell me what to use if i dont have freezer paper ?
+Alexandr Check the video description
+NightHawkInLight thank you very much :D
A mushroom cloud would probably look pretty sick
That would be really cool, great idea!
this was such a fun project to do with the fam (we were very safe and had all the proper protective gear on. we have actual gas mask.) IT WAS SOMUCH FUN! I made an awesome DoctorWho Tardis in space! these have such a vintage minimalistic look to them!
Why have I never noticed this page before, your stuff is awesome.
+Peter Shao I doubt it was real bleach. Probably a color safe alternative
+NightHawkInLight lol it was probably the cheapest most diluted bleach on the shelf...
NightHawkInLight could this work with wax paper?? Or can I just use any type of stencil
Peter Shao
lil_kota bomb I actually tried that. it doesn't really work. Doesn't stick to the shirt at all and it's super hard to write on and cut
Aaaaannndd subscribed.
Let me guess, about 80% of the comments are going to be 12yos making some edgy joke about drinking bleach.
I was wrong. It was only about 50%. I regained hope in humanity
pretty much
Goodh Lee exactly
scrolled too low for this
Goodh Lee yep its gone Real ...
Thank you so much for the great idea of freezer paper! I've been hand painting everything but your technique makes so much more sense!
I like this guys voice. Easy to understand for me.
This is so cool
do not ever cut the stencil on the shirt.
jason jason so how do u do it and what do u use
probably the best way would be to use photo emulsion and silk screen but that costs money and the method here is super cheap. in this tutorial he lays the wax paper on the shirt then cuts it therefore actually cutting the shirt!!! cut the paper first on a cutting board and then iron it onto the shirt. you could even use contact paper which has an adhesive on one side to avoid having to iron at all. or you could use shaped sponges as stamps if you need quick repeating patterns or symbols.
I agree, cutting on the shirt is bound to go wrong, as it shows in the video. I'd rather try this with sticker-paper and pre-cut, covering up the edges with a thin line of paper to prevent premature bleaching through the cuts.
you're right !!!!!
you run the risk of cutting the shirt 👍
But then you couldn't do layers of bleach..
He so dramatic about bleach and my mama use bleach like there's no tomorrow
Two things:
1.) I'll be attempting this stenciling technique within the hour and am honestly sort of embarrassed about just how excited I am to get started.
Thanks
Okay this is so amazing, this is exactly what I had in mind for shirts and I had no idea how to do it
you're voice is very beautiful by the way
Lais Donella thanks
My class mad hundreds of them to make money for an earthquake in Aisa
Kristen Wilk Very cool!
241 people thought this video was about designing bleach Anime tshirts 😂
godson SOANS Omg XD
I've got a bunch of stencils from when I used to do a lot of street art. I've painted some on white tshirts years ago, but this makes me want to dig them out n do some on dark t's now. Thanks for sharing!
Wow this is amazing . Creating art by improvising is my kind of thing. Like pyrography without using an official tool I used a soldering iron
That bleach looks delicious...
WHY DO YOU CUT IT ON THE SHIRT????
Y'all gonna use me?
why are u everywhere
take it stop
Clorox Bleach idk I'll it depends on the cringe factor
+Doodle Monstah fr he's on every video I watch
+Scy Vortex I think there's many different bleach accounts.

I used spray adhesive and card stock like ten years ago.
I really like your methods.
Thanks for sharing!

Go home Great Value. Nobody uses you
Why waste perfectly good beverage?

Lovely job. I particularly liked the space launch t shirt👍
I was laying in bed wondering how I could use bleach to create designs that look like batik.... And then I got up to set my alarm and this was on my RUclips playlist. I'm going to start experimenting with this technique tomorrow. Thank you so much... I think it's weird how phones can read your mind these days LOL
Great work with the patterns, but you have ruined all the shirts cutting lots of holes into them.
korpakukac He said to be careful not to cut the shirt.
I wonder if it is possible to be careful enough, I will try this technique soon, will see.
What's funny is this video was right under an Idubbbz video XDDDdD
I have some experience with bleach myself
your profile picture looks like mine :D
This is just lovely! I recently discovered your channel! I'm loving your videos so much!
not sure if anyone has suggested this yet, but they make paper cutters which are basically extra small ceramic razors. they don't usually cut all the way though the paper. they just score it so that it can be torn easily. they look like magic markers, and the blade is so small that it looks like a grain of sand stuck to the end of the tool. i used them before and they're not perfect, but they might be more well suited to this project than a full sized hobby knife.
who else went to sleep with this?
why not just cut out the design before sticking it to the shirt? that way there's no way you'll accidentally cut the shirt?
who came here for reading bleach joke comments?
Mii lol
Wii too
Kamal AL-Hinai lol
There are so many different Band and cartoon t-shirts that I want to by but because of this awesome tutorial I am going to make them myself
This is awesome. I will definitely start including products using this technique in my merchandise line. Thanks for sharing!
