We're in Battambang province in Cambodia. Battambang province is famous for its agriculture and for growing the country's best fresh produce. We're here to get to the heart of Cambodia's food culture and share with you some of the best food in the country. In this video we hire a tuk tuk and do a DIY tour of Battambang's cottage industries which revolve around food. We visit a rice paper maker, a Muslim fishing village, visit Battambang's famous prahok market, go into the heart of a traditional dessert factory and eat some delicious Khmer street food along the way. We hope you enjoy this Cambodian food tour in Battambang, Cambodia.
If you're in Battambang and would like Mr Ol our tuk tuk driver to take you around for the day you can contact him on +855 92 563 957 once you're in Battambang. If he's unavailable he'll be able to suggest another driver to you. Mr Ol charged us $15USD for our time with him but we paid him a bit more as we really valued his service. In the villages and businesses we visited we made sure to purchase food/drink as our way of saying thank you for allowing us into their space and to observe them.

As an American living in Asia for the last 9 years, I was lucky to visit Cambodia a few times. I usually rent a motorbike to explore deeper to many small towns and villages, and kro lan was always with me where ever I went. I loved to enjoy it with a strong Cambodian coffee. You can peel the krolan and use the bamboo as a spoon to eat it with. The flavor is subtle and smokily delicious. Cambodia makes awsome kuy teav (kway toew) too. I appreciate that you delved deeper into Cambodian soul through your stomach in this video. Khmer people are truly amazing. Keep exploring because our souls are always thirsty.

kro lan is one of the foods I always buy whenever I visit Bathembong. I miss my hometown.
I just somehow envy the way they cook their food. It's so rare in the more developed parts of Asia today to find food cooked the traditional way using charcoal/wood/coconut husks etc. like they used to.. It really does impart a more mature flavour to the food.
Very true A O! There’s something so raw and beautiful about the open flame and it was neat seeing everything recycled ie the rice husks and coconut husks being used for fuel. Cheers, Sheena

I respect you for enduring the smell of prahok. Prahok is a staple food used for cooking and kept unfrigerated for months or years. There are so many ways to use fish. You both are so interesting to watch and I live in Cambodia! You love chili, Sheena-your expression while eating is priceless. I am salivating like a hungry pup right now.

The coconut sticky rice cooked in bamboo looks really interesting. Fermented fish, seriously hats up for you guys🙌🏻😁 I can imagine the salty & fishy smell definitely strong😂 yet you still capture them for us so thank you💪🏻

Sheena, that Prahok manufacture is very intense. I'm Cambodian, I love Prahok but seeing how it makes in such big volumes is very interesting and scary. I can't imagine the smell but it doesn't face you at all. You are so braved and have strong stomach and mind. Most people would have covered their noses, run away or talk about how disgusting it is. You make this experience positive, unconditional and show great appreciation to foods in regardless of he smell, how they make and taste. I love Kranlanh. While you're in Cambodia and in many Asian countries, do you have any problem with your stomach from eating those foods? I love you and Thomas always stay so humble, kind to the local people and smile all the time. Thanks for another great video and sharing your experience in Cambodia with us. Keep it up

Both Thomas and I really love strong smells so we both really enjoyed visiting the prahok market 😄 it was fascinating seeing it in such big quantities! Such a strong and intense smell. You can see how it adds such a depth of flavour to dishes. We haven’t had any trouble with our tummies since being in Cambodia 😄 we very rarely get food poisoning in South East Asia given how much street food we eat and how often we travel. This was such a special day- the people we met were the highlight- we felt so welcomed by everyone it was truly one of the most memorable travel days we have ever had! 💕 We love Cambodia 🇰🇭 thanks for watching and commenting mate 😄 Big love back! How did you plan this video? Did you preplan and know exactly where you were going and if you’d be able to really get up close to the people and food? Or were you winging it and the day just happen? -Jenn

It was all very much on the fly 😆 we had a rough idea of where we might visit like the prahok market and the fishing village but we didn’t know if there’d be food to eat or what we’d see. I was born and and brought up Phnom Penh so there're so many provinces where I haven't had a chance to visit and Battombong" is one of them. Thank you for showing us around. "Nom Krok" look so appetizing but you should have eaten with sweet and sour sauce not by themselves. Btw, love your UK accent.

Yes especially the nom kuoh. I’m Cambodian but I was born and raised in Australia. Last time I went to Cambodia was 2012 and let me tell I miss all the deserts and all the street food. My parents are from Battambang I showed this video to them and they were very happy when watching
They were Reminiscing their village and all the food that they were bought up with, also I’ve been watching all your videos in Cambodia I’m so due for another visit. Hopefully some time soon 🤞🏻

Sounds crazy because I never made it to Battambang but this brings back lots of memories. 🤔😀
I did a ton of research when planning my trip and Mr. Ol's name popped up several times as the best tour guide in the area. He was working for the hotel I was going to book. So happy to actually finally see him! 👍 Looks like all the spots that were advertised - fishing village, bamboo sticky rice, fish market and rice paper company/resto...along with some caves. The rice paper lady must be the matriarch. I've seen several videos featuring her...one from 2008 and she looks the same. Love her.

By the way, did you two not see bamboo sticky rice in Thailand? I had it while in Bangkok. The set up was next to a park and looked exactly like this. I seem to recall that it was kind of sweet. 👍
When were you in Cambodia Tosh? Mr Ol was amazing. Hahaah we must have unofficially had the official tour- he suggested we might want to see the caves and some temples but we told him we were on a mission and wanted to visit the food oriented spots only. We didn't make it to Cambodia, Sheena. 😬 It wasn't due to lack of interest (obviously) but found a screaming deal on flights to Europe and could not pass up. Happens regularly actually. I'll have 2-3 places targeted and do preliminary research but since airfare is so significant, I'm sometimes swayed to reconsider. Unless there's a specific purpose I'm super flexible.
Ohhh you didn’t make it at all! I’m sure you’d find the food culture fascinating here as we are. It’s actually been super fun having to really hunt about for traditional food as opposed to it all just being super accessible and there being a lot of it! Gotta go where the cheap airfares are sometimes! 😄

By the way did you know that Battambong is the province that produce the most rice for Cambodia and it is said the best tasting rice is found in Battambong. I haven't googled fact check that, but that is what the locals tell me. Haha.

First time ever see so much "Prohok" fermented fish in my life.

The thing about Prahok is that you either love it or hate it. There are people who just simply wouldn't eat food that's cooked with it, and there are people who refuse to cook a soup without it.

Hope that one day you will be able to eat suckling pig for us. I know that in Chinese restaurants it costs a bomb (mostly only at high-end chinese restaurants all over asia) so your most affordable option would be bali (or other pork-eating parts of indonesia) (called babi guling) or phillipines (lechon). The skin is what you're after. It's very smooth and sheeny (excuse the pun 😆) and has a very different texture and flavour from your usual siu yok. It can be a bit greasy because it is grilled but a good one should be relatively light.
So good isn’t it. We’ve never filmed it I don’t think but have had it in both Bali and the Philippines. Absolutely love it when in Bali and Babi guling is one of our go to meals when there. Hopefully we can film it one day soon! Cheers, Thomas 😀
