- Did a little shopping In New York’s garment district (fabric heaven!) and Rob joins me to weigh in on my first fabric haul of 2022. Turns out he's really against polyester. (And matching outfits. But we knew that.)
Let us know your favorites, and what you'd like to see me sew...next up, I'm finding the sewing pattern matches for these babies!

Love you guys! Maybe you could use a bit of the brown tone floral fabric and only use it for the yoke of a man’s shirt or some piping or trim (with the rest of the shirt being a coordinating brown solid cotton fabric) for your man? That way he gets his cotton and a touch of flavor and you get matching accents. Might be a way to ease him into your much more dynamic patterns without stressing him out? I could totally see this as a wonderful island vacation wardrobe start! Maybe you could design a vacation wardrobe capsule for you both!?! Can’t wait to see what you create next!
A VACATION WARDROBE CAPSULE!!! Surely that’s the kind of situation where “if you sew it, it will come”
A Cowboy shirt with floral yoke and cuffs! (The lining can be cotton)
I agree with Robs choice… I see one of those asymmetrical skirts, higher hem in front, lower in the back… with one of those adorable fancy seams you do… or lined… with a coordinating solid!!!
Nothing says 26 years of love than matching outfits in #hotNclammy fabric!!
Love the fabric choices!❤
Rob, I’m so happy to see you and your Royal QUEEN. I live in New Jersey and wish I could meet You to go fabric shopping in the city. There is no one like you Marcy.
💗thanks from both of us! I was thinking a big meet & greet shopping trip in NY would be fun once things settle…
Thank you, Rob for the dramatic reading of CS’s Cotton description. My world is complete. 😷✌️
I love that it became too much for him to bear 😂😂
Rob could rock a vest out of the matching fabric! That way it could peek out of a blazer, little pop pop of pattern match with youuuuu!
Love your vids!
Marcy you could rock a modern riding habit
I must know what these look like. Or, maybe I just need to run with the sewing design prompt!
@@thehandmadeharriells I gave you a non-jodhpur design hint in another comment. I second the vote for a modern Oonaballoona take on the riding habit!
I'm claustrophobic and I was the only kid that was terrified of the parachute game. The fabric was cute though. It would make a nice shower curtain- hot and clammy.
And I'm just as bad. If my ex never reminded me, I'd forget my anniversary. Lol
I’m with him on his favorite! That’s my favorite as well OMG it’s gorgeous. I’m new to sewing and new to your channel and I love your energy.♥️🧵🪡
Thanks so much! We LOVE to welcome new sewists! I’m going to have to think hard on that floral beauty…. She is soooooo pretty….
Imean... Rob... she thought about you with the whole neutral colors and brown floral... you two would be totes adores!!
Like how dare he step all over my obvious thoughtfulness
You two are just so absolutely adorable AND funny! : D Love Ya!!
I agree with Rob on the poly and nylon. It's cheaper than something like cupro or silk, but not really worth it.
On another note my husband and I watched the first season of Search Party and I was so excited to see Marcie!
Ah that shoot was SO much fun!
My problem is I find so many good poly prints that are begging to be sewn….I can’t help myself!
Oh man you had me laughing with you!!!!!
The stripe in a jacket with the large floral Rob love's would look gorgeous. When the fabrics were folded up next to each other the colours and pattern played beautifully. It could be a modern take on a riding habit. For ladies the riding habit has a fitted waist length jacket and then a long full skirt to cover the legs whilst riding side saddle. You would rock that outfit.
xxxxxxxxx
I’m really into the riding habit idea. Never would have thought of it without Rob’s dramatic reading 🤓
I love to fold all my fabrics together from a trip-90% of the time I’m not shopping with a plan so it’s fun to see if they end up playing together!
@@thehandmadeharriells I dare you to make the riding habit!!
What is this shopping with a plan? I can think of only 2 times I did that. One for an outfit to go to a wedding and my first wedding skirt (which I made the night before) xxxx
Love watching the two of you 💜 i second the idea of a shirt for Rob, perhaps even a loungewear set 🤔🤯
LOUNGEWEAR. This is sorely lacking in his wardrobe. I could really get behind sewing that…..
The way he peeled out at the matching fabric! 🤣🤣 But really, that third fabric is gorgeous! New subbie.
Thanks for joining us!! You'll find he does that often 🤣
How can you two be so healthy after your bout with the Rona!?! Love the colorful fabrics.
❤🧡💛💚💙💜 For Rob, do a DUO with a checkered print for him but matches your colorway.
🤗to be honest, we’ve been sicker-we were glad to be vaxxed & boosted to battle it!
I love the idea of a subtle matching….maybe he wouldn’t even realize what was happening 🤔😬
I'm so with Rob today! I wish my flight attendant uniform was wool instead of synthetics. But I do know where the fire extinguishers live. And I'm going to stalk that big pink flower fabric and hope it's all cotton. I left a fabulous long jacket in a similar fabric in a hotel...I'll have to learn to sew a jacket to bring it back into my life!
Now that's CRAZY. How are they putting y'all in poly?!
Agree with Rob on Polyester. All my jumps were with nylon because silk was no longer available. Now they are considering polyester. Who would jump out of a plane and risk being hot and clammy? Baby steps on the dual outfit; a jump suit for you with matching cravat for Rob.
And ironically, the fabric that gets you safely out of a plane is the fabric that Rob will never wear *on* a plane…
The cravat trick is always a fun last minute road to matching. One he actually accepts sans stress 🤣
I’m with Rob when it comes to cotton vs polyester!! I don’t completely avoid the blends, but it’s a hard no on the 100%!! (Although, I do love “couple outfits” - sorry, Rob!!) ❤️
I will take that as a W for my corner, Nancy 😅
Yes to the couple outfits! Sorry Rob.
OMG I love you guys, you always have me cracking UP!
😁😁😁thank you La Vonda!
I agree with Rob, cotton all the way. Thanks for sharing!!! Have a great day!!!
I gotta some with Rob on this. I'm a natural fibers fan.
It’s almost impossible to pick a favourite but the hibiscus/poppy/red tropical flower is my fave. I can see it in a full skirt, box pleats, cocktail length or high-low hem, with a bolero jacket or a closely fitted jacket with a sleeveless shell underneath in that bold red. It would look fabulous on you. And Rob gets a foulard in the same fabric as the shell. For when he wants to get fancy. Because something tells me he likes a bit of fancy every now and then. So when is he doing that closet tour?
A foulard! Googling this immediately…
Ah, yes. He has a whole box full of foulard, it’s his favorite way to appease my desire for matching handmade outfits. Must sew him up one for each print.
We’ve got a few hibiscus hi-low hem votes, I’m going to have to ponder that!
I enjoyed the video. Marcy you need to make Rob's blazer soon.
Have fun designing and sewing all your new fabrics.
I plan on it!!
She lying!!!!!!😂😂😂 Rob is hilarious!!!
He still doesn’t even know 😂🤣😂
Love!
Love it 😍
cotton and rayon is all I wear, especially in Arizona, gotta agree with Rob
Now Arizona and nylon would not mix!
You guys just make me happy.
And I can't wait to see what you make!
Yes to couple outfits! Love all those prints! 😍
I’m with Rob. Cotton and wool.
Those fabrics look great
Lovely prints, all of them, but I am with Rob: cotton and wool, and no matching!
DANG. Rob is definitely winning this one…
Hilarious!! Thank you!!
You both make me laugh so much!!!! Sew great! 🥰
💗Thankya Krista!
You two are swell! Love seeing your haul, and hearing a bit about what you plan to make. Thanks to Rob for giving us some info about some of the fabrics. I think, in spite of the promises, there might be a new shirt in Rob's future. Saw those crossed fingers, Marcie (ooops.. Marcy) Thanks for all the fun.
Yes make three!!! Me too!! Brownyellowtriplets!!!!
We shall all join the brownyellaflower club!
@@thehandmadeharriells and be happy and cringy every day, all day!!
ROB!!!😃
I haven’t heard of that book before…will have to look into getting one. Thanks for the info and the beautiful fabric show-and-tell!
Debbie it is SUCH a good book! I just put links in the description, it goes in and out of stock but at least it’ll get you on the hunt 💗
@@thehandmadeharriells Thank you!!!🥰
Ooo Marcy! How you lit up at the idea of the an entire suit for Rob in the bright striped twill 😂😂 I can not wait!
I mean THE PICTURE IN MY MIND 🤩
100% in favor of the matching outfits. js
The last one is my favorite. I’m with Rob on the nylon and polyester, sorry Marcy.
Can't wait to see the goods!
Can’t wait to SEW the goods 😬😬😬
@@thehandmadeharriells can't wait to see Rob in the goods! Male riding habit 😜
OH HAHAHAHAAAAA now that’s what needs to happen!!!!
@@thehandmadeharriells go forth and make it happen! Lolololol
Ooh yes I can see Rob in a shirt or maybe a shirt and short set ☺️
I MEAN RIGHT? Lemme just tell him I’ve got a vote 😬
I agree with Rob, Cotton is King!
Rob is racking up the votes…
Environmentally cotton is not good. It needs a lot of water and pesticides. Hemp on the other hand has the same properties but grows happily with much less water and no pesticides. It can be used for many products besides fabric so there is no waste.
Just saying.
Love your channel. So far I have put 3 panels in a jeans jacket and made a kaftan out of a sari! love them both. Thank you.
Well now how about that! I’d love to source some vibrant hemp fabrics.
I am so stoked to hear you’re sewing along with us!!!
Emphasis on hot and clamy!! Love you guys!!
😂😂😂
Hi. Hello. Howdy. I love the top and fabric Marcy is wearing. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Connie 👋🏽💗!
Just ordered that book!!! Updated, used, free shipping 😊
i hope you're digging it as much as I do!
But the blue would match robs eyes!!!! Go to duo
No Rob...duo's are what we want!! How about a Hawaiian shirt for you and dress for Marci?
We love duo's and the modeling of the duo's!!!
THANK YOU YOLANDA. He is winning the vote at this point! 😫
Fun video, except for the polyester. I think of it this way, every time you wash your polyester clothing a fish dies (little bits of plastic end up in the ocean). Anyway I love you guys.
That polyester with pink leopard print would also be cute in the pattern for the blue dress that you turned back to front.
Ooooo I wonder if the static electricity would do me in, because that silhouette would be lovely…..
@@thehandmadeharriells Baby you're a firework!
Bolero jacket to match the deeply flared skirt in the white poppy fabric. Nice selection.
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Oooo bolero jacket. Love a cropped vibe.
Make a riding habit! Make a riding habit! Although I think Ms Schaeffer probably wasn't thinking what I'm thinking...
Ugh, I remembered RUclips is being weird about links in comments these days. Look up Queen Louise of Prussia riding habit! Classy historical fashion icon, you know! Not like your fabric admittedly, but I can't help thinking it would still make a _great_ Oonaballoona modern variation on the theme. She had a pom-pom on her hat!
(Hint: Although they were for riding horses, I read in an 1809 book online that they also were worn just for walking. Stylish walking clothes.)
Oh OKAY MISS QUEEN! That Pom Pom hat! I even have a vintage top hat from Rob’s grandmother, the gears are turning…
@@thehandmadeharriells That pom-pom hat is awesome, isn't it!
Mathematically, 26 is after 25...
Sooooo....
Marce's "after 25 years of marriage" is TOTALLY (💯) correct...
Oh, and Marcy's " Oh my god" after the plane bit is my fave
Oh (again), and no matching... not till y'all are 70ish and sewing track suits
HAHAHAHA MIKE actual facts!!
The after 70 rule works for lots of things that are no-fly-zone until then.
I’m with Rob. You are a great couple. I love his ‘civilian’ role on your videos…good perspective. Love your tips…just bought the book and am planning a NYC garment district spree soon. Are you planning a field trip soon? If so, I volunteer to help (used to plan group thingies professionally). Ginny
Ginny I may take you up on that one day! 💗
OMG - hot and clammy.... NOT for me (definitely not what I'd say)! Though I am envious of the many beautiful and cheap varieties available (yours are lovely Marcy), I am very much in the natural fiber camp. I do like silks for linings on winter things. I am also learning to love cotton linen blends (so much versatility! Found a 50/50 blend that is marvelously silky and I think can be used for linings on summer things when needed). Thanks for the fabric description narration Rob! Thanks both of you for the giggles, I needed them after this week.
We’re always glad to give you giggle, Esther 💗
I loooooove a cotton linen blend. Cotton silk blends can be pretty spectacular too!
I’ve referred to Claire Schaffer’s many times, but Rob has infused the same words with high drama… 😄
I want to do an entire video of Ron’s Dramatic Sewing Readings
@@thehandmadeharriells that would be AMAZING!
@@thehandmadeharriells that would be AMAZING!
All for the duo matching! What guy doesn’t like a vest or waistcoat to match his lovely lady?!
This is great I’m getting some votes! LOOK OUT ROB!
I’d never wear polyester on a plane.
Love that blouse Marcy! Rayon is great.
I’m glad rayon makes the cut!
But then she’s have her own built in parachute!! 😂😂
@@rachellynncreates2703 🤣🤣🤣
@@thehandmadeharriells it breathes and feels terrific and it’s made from wood pulp.
3:14 a riding habit is the outfit you would wear to ride a horse ... so I totally agree with Rob that you should make a habit and go pose with a horse :-P
Now if I can just find a horse….
I use a glue stick with slippery fabrics. It’s a life saver.
I keep meaning to try this!
When you buy your fabric with no idea what to use it for, yet, how much do you purchase?
I usually go for 3 yards of 60 width, and 4 of 45 (though I’m usually buying wide widths!). If the price is right I’ll bump it up to 5 yards (so I can make a gown, or, you know, matching outfits 😜)
@@thehandmadeharriells thank you. ❤️ I often see fabric I absolutely adore and want to buy but have no idea how much I should get. Now when my hubby notices my fabric stash is growing, I can totally blame you!!! 😂😂😂 Love you guys so much for the videos, the info and the fun. Have a great day. ☺️
I see Rob's opinion on plastic fabrics and raise him environmental impact thereof. I recognize that there's still a need for them, but I'm avoiding plastic in my fabric and clothing buying as much as possible.
An excellent point….i do avoid it in many other areas!
The reason I don't own any jumpsuits.... I have a bladder the size of a pea!
🤣that IS a struggle
I don’t want synthetics to melt on me either! Can we say irrational fear? But I don’t care. Still scary. Lol
I mean I understand it……….I just don’t wanna imagine it!!
@@thehandmadeharriells I do have way too much cotton when there are so many beautiful fabrics to choose from. I will try to channel your fabric spirit animal. Lol
I know it’s a sewing channel but any marriage advice for a wife that’s about done with her husband? 15 years in and about to be OUTTTT. 😁
Oh no Paola! Well, if you’re serious, we’re actually planning a video on this 🤓👩🏽🤝👨🏼
@@thehandmadeharriells yes! That would be great! Thank u!
C'mon Rob, let her get one matching outfit a yr. Just one
Like maybe I could get him into one a year. Probably my best shot is my birthday 😅
