Ladies and gentlemen this IS country music. Gary was by far the best at making you cry and his music was from the heart. Gone but definitely not forgotten.
Great voice, great talent, great writer and sadly, a great tragedy. This is true American country music by an artist who gave us far more than we gave him back. When I first heard this almost forty years ago, I said, "Good Lord! Who is that." He stopped me in my tracks. Yet my brother had to drive all over Chicago to find the album to give to me for Christmas. Rest in peace Gary, rest in peace.
@@gabekerr9641maybe in the terms that he drank a lot and fell into addiction when his sons passed… but I can assure you he loved Mary Lou with everything he had
I just discovered this guy today, listening to a classic country radio station and I already love this guy and now want to hear as much of him as I can. Absolutely brilliant.
Being from FL I grew up listening to Gary Stewart. Now that I'm older and away from home it takes me back to my younger days hanging in Okeechobee. Bonus just found "Essential Gary Stewart" on CD for my Jeep.
Same here! Born and raised in South Florida, and always listened to Gary Stewart! So sad how it ended for him! Listening to his songs takes me back many years ago! He was a great artist that never got the credit that he deserved!
Alot of country greats are copied by other artists. This dude cannot be copied; he's one of a kind. Enjoy, because you will never ever see anyone do this again.
Gary Stewart was one of the greatest "cryin' in your beer" singers and piano players. The only other one close was Jerry Lee. I loved them both and glad to say I've got most if not all of Gary's recordings.
The song takes me back to a time when my step father was a run around and one of his favorite hang outs was the reason for memory of him attached to this song. Alas, poor SOB. He always was a low level criminal and died in a single vehicle crash.
Long after Garth Brooks has left everyone's memory (which will come sooner than later), people will talk about this musical genius. He didn't swing on a rope, he just did a ton of dope. That's how you make music that survives the ages.
He was one of the original"outlaws" I believe. I loved his style and still do. Why do people come on here to make nasty comments. If you don't like it, just go away and keep your comments to yourself. It is so immature of people to do that. I guess they don't have a life and they are miserble with theirself. I once had a husband like that, notice I said once. Sent him on down the road, ley all the other miserables out there follow him. PLEASE!!!
@aeroshine I love all of Gary Stewart's songs, & could not understand why he wasn't as big as Billy Joe Royal or bigger!! Direct TV changed their stations. I always stayed up for hours recording them on the DVR. Now the new ones will not let you record anything on any of the music channels. I still have a few on a DVD somewhere that I pop in & listen to.
I was born 1967 and i agree the music these day aint country, country is Gary Stewart, George Jones jack green Buck Owens ect ect ect, they dont make GREAT COUNTRY MUSIC ANYMORE!!!
Gray was a great artist you could feel the energy in his songs he was a sad man who loved a women who didn't love him I feel sad for him to hurt so bad you want to die I hope you found your peace Gray R.I.P.
Didn't his son commit suicide, then his wife died, then he shot himself a year later? I never knew his wife didn't love him, I thought they were together like 40 years??
I agree about the pre 1980's country music comment. It seems the music started to die after that, esp when Alabama started adding rock drum beats, and the likes of Ronnie Millsap with his spectacularly crappy pop sounding "There's A Stranger In My House" etc. I was born in '66 so I just caught when country was really country. And don't get me started on today's country, which it hardly is with its ICarly sound (gag), its so bad....
Gary Stewart's wife did not leave him. She died of pneumonia in November 2003--They had been married over 40 years. In Dec 2003 he committed suicide--lived a troubled life and never had the opportunity for growth and being sober.
ok, Gary may not be the out-most pianist, but I defy one to submit another performer who exhibits such honesty while performing, simple and clear vocals, and passably good piano skills ...again, Jerry Lee besides...
His wife left him, his son commited suiside, he continued performing for awhile, as he grew older he couldn't take it anymore. not sure if he just couldn't take growing old and everything that had happened. He committed suiside around 2000-2003 maybe.

Thank you to my dad for allowing me to grow up as a child listen to vinyl records of old Gearge Jones, Merle, cash, Gary Allen, hank Jr., all of them.

The BEST sound ever for country
43 years with the same women says a lot! This man lived a different life than his famous lyrics.. I just know it.
No, he lived pretty hard, but he's ABSOLUTELY awesome!!

U r so right country music now isn't the same today. It's really sad.
cindy kozminski my mom knew him. Maybe went to same school. Wish she were alive so i could show her this video.
I like your guys comments on drinking whiskey and watching (listening) to Gary Stewart on you tube. I was worried I was the only one who did that.
The song Out Of Hand came out in 1975 when I was 16 years old. I have liked it ever since then!! Great album too!!

Certainly a monumental factor and distinct sound in all of the great talent that came out of 70’s country music.
I love his voice brings back a lot of memories thanks for sharing.

he was awesome. I am just know discovering him. wish he would have been a bigger success, he deserved it. voice as smooth as TN whiskey
Gary is a natural talent. It's obvious that his songs come from his heart. Many of his later video's show his true vices, sadly enough.
one of my favorites i love Gary Stewart ⚘😍
The song takes me back to a time when my step father was a run around and one of his favorite hang outs was the reason for memory of him attached to this song. Alas, poor SOB. He always was a low level criminal and died in a single vehicle crash.

@REsensee Gary will always be a legend to me also.RIP Gary we miss you.
Love these songs
I hope that Gary believed that he was one if the best before he took his life. RIP.
Now THIS is what country music should sound like. It shouldn't be run homogenized, pasteurized, cauterized, computerized, and neutered.
@aeroshine I love all of Gary Stewart's songs, & could not understand why he wasn't as big as Billy Joe Royal or bigger!! Direct TV changed their stations. I sure do miss Gary, This song is so true, this is to @REsensee
Can someone please post In some room above the street. That is my favorite Gary Srewart song.
Seeing the real deal sure pulls the covers on most of the "new country" (models in cowboy hats) acts

his wife had just passed away after a long illnes could have been one of the causes of his early demise.
That was the reason for sure. It was only a few weeks before he committed suicide.
right on, Iforbus. the mold was broken.

does anyone else hear the jerry lee lewis tone in his voice ?
Music used to be REAL!!! NOT now, though!!!!!
He liked those songs about adultery, didn't he?

He was into drugs and alcohol bad.
Yes his wife did leave. But they never divorced
Maybe it's a lack of liquor. That's as good a guess as any for this sad-ass performance. His voice is shaking and quavering and shaking.
Yes old comment response... but is needed for this dumb ass comment from somebody that doesn't know shit about his music and his singing!
That was his voice.
