Incredible work, thanks for sharing your building techniques. I’ve been building since the early 1960’s. This being said, you have managed to teach an old dog new tricks! Thank sir. Please keep up your great work.
That makes me so happy to hear, glad I could pass along something new!
Hellcat, absolutely my favorite WW2 Navy airplane.
Yeah, its definitely in my top 5!
Very nice build of this iconic airplane. Also the base looks great. Excellent!
Thanks a lot!
Lovely build! 👍🏻I built Revell's, Italeri's, Airfix's (old) and Eduard's 1/72 Hellcat and Eduard definitely won out as the best of the bunch!
Very nice!
Very nice work on the camo and weathering and an excellent presentation of your thoughts and processes. Thanks for shairing
Thank you kindly!
Aazing Hellcat, congrats. Looking awesome.
Built this kit this spring too and had lots of fun.
Subscribed my friend👍
Your carrier deck looks terriffic to, would love to see a makinf of this😎
Thanks for the sub! Glad you enjoyed your build! I'm sure I will have future project that will need carrier decks, so I will keep in mind to film my process for that!
I was impressed with how you work with oil paints👍👍👍👍👍🙂
Thank you! I'm still learning them, but really happy with how they are turning out.
spectacular...just picked up this kit and the hobby boss to do one with folded wings.
Nice, I will have to give the HB one a try just for the folded wings.
Great build 👏 I've got my own one to make and this has given me lots of good pointers 😊
Awesome, its a decent kit, enjoy!
Love the channel. I’d be interested in seeing more 1/72 models. Especially a f18 and other early era jets
My current list of to build…. All 1/72
Airfix p51
Airfix Doolittle b-25
Gwh f-14
Thanks for watching! I have a number of 1:72 scale kits in the pipeline for the channel, I only wish I had more time in the day to get kits done! First world problems! It looks like you have a good line up of kits to build, both the airfix P-51 and B-25 are great kits, I've enjoyed them a lot. I would love to build the GWH F-14, looks like it has outstanding detail!
As for early jet era aircraft, I have an FJ fury planned coming up and I'll have to add an F-18 to the line up. Maybe I need a low viz Jolly roger Super hornet in my collection.

@@HammerheadModelMaking If your taking request for 1/72 early jet builds the Sabre is my favorite . Would love to see a Korean war F86 build .
Awesome build my friend keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Really enjoy your videos mate!
Glad you like them!
I would love to see how you create the bases for your aircraft. Didn't see a video for it on your channel. This build was nice Brett. Update: DISREGARD, found the "Bases 101 video".
I do plan on doing a video just on carrier bases this year!
Great job man! I never used that technique to do chipping, i have to try it ;)
Its my new favorite way of doing it.
Most of Princeton's Hellcats lost their "teeth" once the carrier was lost, as the survivors were allocated to other squadrons within the fleet, and thus were painted over.. Nice kit and informative video as i have a bunch of various 72nd scale Hellcats to do
Thanks for sharing, I wasn't aware of that. Good luck with your Hellcats!
Very nice build. Super
Thank you!
Nicely done
Thank you! Cheers!
I really didn’t want to like this, it was 666, I was 667. Im new to the hobby, I build ships, but still can extrapolate techniques from airplanes… besides I may build a few eventually. Really glad I found your channel.
lol, glad you found the channel too!
Superb result sir. I have the eduard kit in my stash so I know where the references will be coming from! BUT can you help me, as my Princeton F6F-3 has given me a massive headache in that I like to know who flew the planes I build (but not to this standard regrettably). White 11 flew off Princeton early on the morning 0f 24th Oct. 1944 but had to relocate to USS Essex, Princeton having been stricken by the single bomb from an N4Y D-3. I have googled until I'm blue in the face and cannot find the identity of the pilot even though this bird was unusually marked f11 on the fuselage. Can you help please, it's my tribute of respect to these brave pilots. Congratulations on great work, from England.
Thank you for watching, unfortunately my little bit of research yielded no results for White 11. Couldn't even find a picture of it. Not sure where else to search, but I wish you luck!
Thank you sir. I found a picture of 11 after it landed on USS Essex but got no further, grrrr! However, I will succeed. Please keep up your amazing work.
I have a successful postscript. The pilot was Flt. Lt. Haberman, who 2 days prior to Princeton being hit had a mid air collision with another Hellcat but made a safe landing. Once again, great build.
Great video as always! Caught your mention of the figure but not the base - is it aftermarket? Look forward to the next one!
Thank you. The base was scratch built by me. I used white ensign photo etch for the tie down strips. Balsa for the deck planks and plastic for the elevator rim.
@@HammerheadModelMaking - it’s as astounding as that plane! Well done!
@@SchmidtJim thank you sir!
very realistic model😃
Thank you! Cheers!
Those drop tanks were very thin and they shipped with Wrigley chewing gum to patch little fuel leaks... And yes it was pink on the ground and lighter when it froze at altitude.
That's a super interesting fact about the gum, reminds me of the Rocketeer movie!
Also remember that they left handprints and wear on the propellors when they pushed the oil out of the sump to keep from blowing cylinders
Beautiful build. I have a weakness for WW2 carrier base aircraft. =)
Thanks, so do I!
Eduard is the best!
I agree.
Thanks
Wow, thank you, thats very kind of you!
Great job!
Thanks!
Awesome build bud
Thanks!
The white staining from the exhaust is actually from the tetraethyl lead that they used to create the super high octane aviation fuel.
Thanks for the clarification!
Very good & nice job on the Hellcat !!
@@walterhammond290 much appreciated!
Free hand cammo jobs are absolutely legit. More skill involved and less time spent scraping tape or tacky crap of the model.
Thanks man, yeah, the less masking I have to do, the better!
Amazing !
Thank you! Cheers!
Re-watching for inspiration 😁what is the liquid mask you use?
I use a liquid mask product by MIG.
@@HammerheadModelMaking Great thank you 😁 I've recently bough the mig wash you always use and I'm going to use it on my next project 👍
@@themodellingmuppet Excellent! I love that stuff!
@@HammerheadModelMaking I look forward to testing it.
Awesome!😍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Could you do us all a favor and say Umm more.. it really is engaging as all get out!
Yeah, definitely something I'm working on, public speaking is definitely not my forte but I'm working on being more conscious about it when recording my audio.
Did you make the base? If you didn’t, please post some information about it
I did make the base myself. Its a mix of bass wood, styrene, and etched metal for the tie down strips. I have plans to do a video on how I made it, but it will be a little while before I am able to get to it.
Concerning the stretched sprue....I now avoid Tamiya liquid glue like the plague..its sooo hot. Mr. Cement is much better. Not as hot and doesn’t melt your details. The drawback is that its liquid active bonding state doesn’t last as long so you must work quicker...but it never melts your details.
Awesome, thanks for the tips, I'll look into getting some Mr Cement.
What color red from Vallejo did you find to match the teeth decal?
I believe it was Vallejo’s Flat red from their Model Color range.
What is the glue/adhesive used to assemble wings to the fuselage?
I used some extra thick CA glue from
BSI-inc.
굿 셀,,,굿 럭키....
Thank you.
What type of oil paint do you use for exhaust stains and other oil stains and how long does it take to dry?
I use a brand of oil paints called Masters Touch, from my local art supply store. Usually, I will apply the oil paint to a small patch of cardboard, to let it leech out the linseed oil first, usually about an hour or two before I apply it to the model. Then, once its been applied to the model, I will usually give it until the next day before moving on to the next step.
@@HammerheadModelMaking OK thanks. I used abteilung for exhaust on mine and even a day after if I even slightly touch it there will be a finger mark or it will kind off wipe off.
@@spookyno1401 interesting, I’ve only heard good things from that company.
@@HammerheadModelMaking It may have been me putting too much on at once and not waiting long enough. I have also heard only good things about them.
Part of the reason why exhaust stains were so prominent on the Hellcat, Corsair, P-47 and all the other aircraft that used radial engines, specifically the P&W R-2800 Double Wasp was because radial engines would end up burning oil, idk why, but they did and that was a limiting factor for their range like the P-47, they would go through so much oil. So you using some actual oil for the exhaust is both historically accurate and just 🤌
Thank you for the additional info, I'm always happy to learn more about these amazing machines!
What are the differences between the Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat U.S. Navy Carrier- based Fighter and its successor, the F6F-5?
The most obvious visual difference between the -3 and the -5 are the small windows behind the cockpit. They were eliminated on the -5 model. I believe that there were other minor differences with the engine. Also, other -5s were eventually upgraded with 20mm cannons, and some had a radar mounted on the right wing for the night fighter version. But, for the most part, they are pretty similar.
what super glue do you use by chance?
I use the BSI line of hobby super glues, specifically, their Maxi-cure line:
bsi-inc.com/hobby/maxi_cure.html
These can be found in most hobby shops or on Amazon.
What is the piece of rubber you used for chipping?
the piece of rubber came with a liquid mask product I purchased at an arts and craft store, I can't remember the exact product, it's been a while, but you could easily use a piece of rubber eraser for the same function.
@@HammerheadModelMaking Thanks for the reply. Love your work.
@@The12348567 No problem, thanks for watching!
I have the die cast model maisto tailwinds. Nice fighter plane.
Nice!
were did you shop the base?
I build the base from scratch. I used strips of balsa wood for the deck planks, some Photo etch for the tie down strips from White Ensign models, and evergreen styrene for the elevator outline. This was all laminated onto a wooden base I purchased from a local woodshop.
Just a
comment for the algorithm
is it just 360p?
Looks like RUclips is being slow and still processing the HD version.
I'm very disappointed with Hasagawa's kits. I much prefer Airfix, Eduard and Tamiya.
It’s been a long time since I’ve built a Hasegawa kit. Might have to give them a try again just to see what they are like these days.
@@HammerheadModelMaking I had One of theirs 1/48 KI 43, 1/48. Great kit, great fit, nice details
