What a delightful man. I too remember him well as an All Black but dont think Ive ever seen an interview with him. He seems like he punches above his weight. Thanks for the memories John Gallagher hope life is treating you well.

Love this! Loved watching him play for the All Blacks and Wellington. Wonderful player. He visited my primary school in Upper Hutt (Upper Hutt Primary School) to our rugby training. I scored a try in the training game, I had to strain to reach out and force the ball right on the line, and he noticed it. I was pretty chuffed about it :-)

Gallagher’s defection was major accelerant towards professionalism. It smashed all arguments for amateurism. That and his lightning incision into the backline vs Wales in 1989 are the only things missing here.

Changed not only the role of full back but also contributed to the fast tracking to professional rugby.

i will never forget the time john Gallagher left the All Blacks after the 1987 Rugby World Cup right here in Auckland at Eden Park and the Second Rugby World Cup we had here was 2011 and of course we won them both but after after that it just went down hill from that because my uncle Sid Going Led The All Blacks on to Eden Park

JG is one of the greatest players that doesn't get a mention when I've been involved in conversations about the greatest 15's. What a player! Certainly one of the best of his generation. On a side note, that story about the drunk coming back in through different doors is an old Peter O'Toole story, ha haa. I guess that chap decided to tell it as his own. Thanks for the upload Campbell John.

He never did make it onto the '92 GB tour of Aust. & NZ. In fact, it's probably fair to say that he didn't really make it in League, but Schuster did.
