Serious question for all of you. How much return are you getting from doing all of this? This seems like an EXTREME level of effort for what appears to be very minimal gains. Now, before you all rip into me, please understand, I'm not challenging your love of doing this or the satisfaction you get when you've completed the process. My entire frame of reference is watching these videos. I am absolutely brand new to mechanical keyboards, so I have never even attempted any of these things, and I'm genuinely curious. Why are you doing things like painstakingly lubricating each component of a switch by hand? Is it just a love of the art, or is it for some real, tangible performance gain? Does your typing suddenly become faster and more accurate after modding a keyboard? At what point does it become a game of diminishing returns? Thank you all for your answers (and yes, even those of you who will inevitably choose to make fun of my noobishness).
Holy pandas is the highest tier tactile switch there is. The only way to get a better switch is to lube it, and once you do so there is nothing to upgrade to. But to me it’s worth lubing lower tier switches as well, at least linears. It adds two hours to my build time and almost no extra cost, but gives a nicer experience during the hundreds of hours I’m going to use the keyboard. I also enjoy tinkering. Some advice if you plan to build is to lube your stabilisers even if you don’t want to lube your switches. Rattling stabs can ruin the feel of an entire build and cannot be fixed once the switches are soldered in.
