Yup. Currently on the iPhone 12 128GB, I feel you. I had the battery changed over a year ago so no complaints from the battery department. But it does lag a little especially when taking pictures/videos for some reason. I just preordered the iPhone 16 Pro and I'm looking forward to the much improved camera, 120 Hz screen, and USB-C!
My 8 was approaching unusable last year, so I upgraded to a 15. I can’t imagine a 6, three generations older, would do much today other than phone calls and basic texts.

@@evan-c8bwell, you will get an oled display instead of lcd if you upgrade from base model iPhone 11, and obviously a camera that is a lot better (because he is upgrading from base model to pro model) and also a more powerful cpu. It's actually a huge upgrade in my opinion.

I honestly love these videos, you’re about the only person who actually discusses older models. Most tech reviewers either only think about tech specs from last generation compared to the newer generation (which most people don’t do very often). Like, I have an Apple Watch 6 & I definitely want to upgrade to the series 10 but everyone is only comparing it with the series 9 which doesn’t tell me jack 💩. So that you for thinking of those of us who’ve been forgotten by other tech reviewers!
I have the Apple Watch s5 thinking of upgrading but I’m on the fence. I don’t use it much but I feel like with a new watch that keeps its charge and better display it might be worth it
I upgraded from 13PMx to 16PMx! I agree with what you said, not life changing but the trade in value helped. I think your video should mention trade in value. This makes a big difference in choosing when to pull the trigger on a new iPhone (at least for me)
Brilliant! Why do so many RUclips tech reviewers base the "should you upgrade" question on comparing the new phone to last year's model? Over 90% of people don’t upgrade annually, and no smart corporation would target such a small percentage of users. Apple is likely targeting users with 3-5 year old iPhones. Remember when Apple focused its advertising on the differences between M3 Macs and Intel devices? Critics called it ridiculous and going after "low-hanging fruit," but with 51% of Mac users still on Intel, it made sense to target EXISTING users for an easier transition, not M series buyers or even PC users.
I have a 13 base but am going to a 16 pro because I do use my phone quite a bit whether it be recreational or for work, but 3-4 years for me reaches the point where for me (and most friends I’ve talked to) people’s phones are paid off and cell providers offer the newest phone free/nearly free at that point (obvs still paying for the phone plan)
I upgraded from 12 pro max to 16 pro because everything I own is usb c so I have usb c cable readily available everywhere, might as well get the newest one 👍
I had an SE2 and just got a regular 16. My battery was at 70% life and I pretty much had to give it a 50-70% charge during the day every day just to keep it alive. My case was also falling apart and I figured I might as well upgrade my phone at that point. Pretty happy so far.
What I've learned over all those smartphone years, it's better to upgrade when your old phone still holds value. That's why I'm upgrading from 13 pro max to 16 pro max. My previous phones I never sold, because their value was close to 0, so I didn't bother with that.
Matt thanks for your show. I have usually had my iPhones for 7 years and named them my planned update. I currently own the IPhone 13 Pro Max and named it iPhone 20. Your influence has convinced me I should move ahead with the iPhone 16 ahead of my plan capitalizing on the trade-in value.
Hugely helpful Matt. The kids will keep their 13 Pros and my wife and I will stick with the 15 Pro Max. Wasn’t sure about the kids but following the video it makes sense to keep theirs. Please do this every year!

@@NGreedia yeah I made the mistake of getting the 16 pro max after owning the 13 pro. I love it but the size is huge. You can’t go wrong with the 16 pro if one handed use is a priority. Battery life has been great and no issues after iOS updates. I only recommend upgrading if you have a 3 year or older iPhone model.
I have a standard iPhone 11, and I’m upgrading to iPhone 16 Pro Max. I want a better battery life, video recording, camera quality, and more storage since they sold the 128GB storage.
I actually replaced my 13PM with a 16P and don’t regret it. There years is a long time, and the battery was at 84% and despite being smaller, the 16P at 100% lasts longer and the form factor is just perfect for me as the max and ultra phones are just too big for one handed use for me and didn’t fit my pockets comfortably
At least that long. (Only if my battery isn’t degrading as fast as it did in the last few months, i will go with the 17 at the earliest, but I wouldn’t complain to wait long enough for the iPhone __ pro mini 2tb to be released (i am allowed to still dream, ok) )
Going 13 to 15 Pro . One step below the top for the discount !! 15 Pros , some even with apple care and all are selling for about half their original price on the marketplace cz of the few people who always upgrade annually. Should be good for another couple years. 😎

I’m in the priority 1-2 category iPhone 7 Plus was the last new iPhone I bought, currently using an XS hand me down. Upgrading to a 16 Pro Max would be quite a big difference & I’d just buy it out right paid in full like I did when the 7 Plus came out
If you still have a XR, like me, you probably don’t care about a lot of features of the 16/16pro. You can hold out for a few more months and get the SE 4. Stay strong my XR folks.

I believe 4 years is a good upgrade time. I have the 12 Pro Max and I’m upgrading to the 16 Pro Max. If I had the 13-15, I wouldn’t be upgrading. If I had the 13, I would upgrade next year. I calculated the cost per day going with the 16 Pro Max 1TB and it would cost just under $1.00 per day if I kept it for 4 years. Everything I believe will be better so I already got my VZW guy to preorder it and we are expecting it this Friday.
Going from 11 pro max to 16 pro max, people are saying the 6.7 to 6.9 is minimal but I already got the new case for the phone and my current phone is pretty small within the case. Also, all my other products are all USB C so now I won't need the lightning cables for anything which is a nice quality of life change
This is actually a really good video. I’ve got the 11pro and I’m having battery and speed issues. I’m fairly confident my poor little phone won’t last until the 17 comes out so I’m planning on getting the 16 pro or pro max soon. But this is actually really helpful for trying to decide about my parents who don’t use their phone as often as I do (I have to use it for work a lot)

the se 2 has the same specs as the 11 so if you want a better phone rather than just the “iPhone experience” upgrade following the 11 path, it will likely lose support next year too
yeah my iPhone 8 barely runs so 16 plus is the best option for me. There is altos no difference between the 16 and 16 pro, just extra media cores promotion sorta better usb and better cameras
No. iPhones that Apple say they hold their values is a lie when Apple is giving for my 13 pro £295 while google gives me £438. So no for rotten Apple. I am holding my phone for the 7 years of software and security updates. Replacing the battery is more than enough.

They say that if your battery health is at around the 80% mark, it needs replacing. But 9 times out of 10 a battery replacement for the same phone is pretty much as expensive as just getting a whole new phone. You can view it in your settings.
What I do is buy last years Pro Max used and sell it before the new one releases. I pay around $100-200 a year for my phones this way so I basically get a new phone every year and pay less than people who buy new and keep theirs for longer
I've got the iPhone 13. Another video I watched had mentioned that some Apple CarPlay features are iPhone 15 or higher, which is what has me thinking of upgrading. That said though, the 15 and 16 both lack colors that interest me. The blue isn't too bad, but I'd much rather have purple, so holding out for that. tbh, I kind of regret trading in my purple 12 for the red 13 I have now, but at the time I liked the idea of funds going towards COVID-19 research. And yes, I do always get clear cases, because I like to show off the color, but the lack of good colors is making me wait. I'll be waiting until the iPhone 17.
my first phone was 3G - 6 plus - 5s - 8 - 12 mini currently and im very unhappy with my battery it doesnt even last 3 hours with usage but i guess i would get to the IPhone 17 pro when it comes out without the battery problem its a great phone for daily usage
Battery health is a non issue as you can always pay for a new one to be installed and you don't need an Apple store for that either btw. Only reason to upgrade would be when your apps lose support or degrade in performance. My XR battery health is 84% so I'm probably good for another 2 years myself.
I had a 12 Pro Max, and I upgraded to a second-hand 15 Pro Max that's literally brand new and still on warranty (dunno what that fellow was thinking letting it go for the 16 Pro Max). The only reason I upgraded was for the Apple intelligence, otherwise, I would have gotten a 14 pro max.
I have the 14 Pro Max and I’m upgrading to the 16 Pro Max due to Apple Intelligence, camera features and improved battery life, of course there’s USB C which would be a reason on its one in any other year. I mean it’s not for Apple Intelligence I probably would’ve just kept using my 14 Pro Max battery life isn’t great even though it says it’s on 87% Health so that’s even another reason for me to upgrade, I probably will wait until the iPhone 20 for my next upgrade if the 18 isn’t much of an upgrade from the 16 Pro Max
If your phone is incredibly slow and cracked or in absolutely any other circumstance, there is absolutely no reason to upgrade to a phone that is exactly the same as the iphone x that was released 7 years ago. Switch and you ll finally be happy
Personally I would stick all of the models you put in the category 1. 16/16 plus box in the either, depending on whether users of those old phones (mine is a 4s, and I do also have a 3g stuck in the drawer!) wish to pick up the pro features or just stick with the basic model. It might be most (having not bothered to upgrade in the meantime) would be satisfied with the basic phone, but to think all of them would do so is dubious. People's priorities change over the years.
I have a 12 that I love but made the mistake of getting the 64 gig model and I haven't had space to update it or take many more photos for months💀..... It looks like it is time for an upgrade thanks for the vid Matt!
Probably i’ll wait for the SE4, i can still hold up the xr until next year and tbh i’m not interested in any of that apple intelligence stuff and the camera button, the reason i chose the SE is because the clean back with only one camera. Though the dual or triple camera is not a dealbreaker, i’d like my phone to be a good looking one, also it looks cute.
15P needs to be in its own tier. It is the only pre-existing iPhone that will be getting Apple Intelligence, and that is probably the biggest reason why anyone would consider upgrading to the 16's. It's going to retain full software support for a while, I'd imagine.
I’m not an annual upgrader by any means. Got my 12 Pro and other than 80% battery, which I don’t notice, it doesn’t feel antiquated. I’ve had no interest in upgrading but I’m tempted by the 16, might give it another year though depending what they’re going to do.
My 11 pro max has been fantastic, but charging has become finicky, battery life continues to dip, and there’s times it glitches out. Time for the 16 pro max!

Mann~ you’re spot on about the 10 user. I was unclear on either the 16 vs 16 pro.. i just knew that i was definitely going to upgrade regardless, before making my decision.. can you do this for the “watch”? I’m still using the gen 1 😅 and thinking if I should upgrading that too.
I’ll stick with my 11pro max for now. I’ll wait another year or 2 and see what they bring out. Being honest though I’ve been with iPhones since the 4 and I’ll be jumping to a foldable if they don’t pull anything out the bag soon.
The best is to upgrade your iPhone every 4-5 years. I still got an iPhone 12 Pro Max and I don’t feel like buying the new 16 Pro Max. I’ll wait for the 17 models, what I’m getting? A better camera I barely use? 120 hz? I’ve never use a phone with 120hz so it doesn’t hurts. Better chip? It’s ok because I still playing games with no lag and in high resolution. I want Apple Intelligence but it doesn’t come to Europe until the iPhone 17 presentation, sooo… IPhone 17 Pro Max will be my upgrade 💪🏼😇

yeah my iPhone 8 barely runs so 16 plus is the best option for me. There is altos no difference between the 16 and 16 pro, just extra media cores promotion sorta better usb and better cameras
No. iPhones that Apple say they hold their values is a lie when Apple is giving for my 13 pro £295 while google gives me £438. So no for rotten Apple. I am holding my phone for the 7 years of software and security updates. Replacing the battery is more than enough.

have a 12 pro and it still works well but i decided to preorder 16 pro due to my 12 pro battery health dying on me. cant wait for it to arrive this friday!
I still own my iPhone 12 Pro Pacific Blue. 💙 it still works greatly. Maybe some small issues with the camera, but it might be the lenses.
They say that if your battery health is at around the 80% mark, it needs replacing. But 9 times out of 10 a battery replacement for the same phone is pretty much as expensive as just getting a whole new phone. You can view it in your settings.
What I do is buy last years Pro Max used and sell it before the new one releases. I pay around $100-200 a year for my phones this way so I basically get a new phone every year and pay less than people who buy new and keep theirs for longer
I've got the iPhone 13. Another video I watched had mentioned that some Apple CarPlay features are iPhone 15 or higher, which is what has me thinking of upgrading. That said though, the 15 and 16 both lack colors that interest me. The blue isn't too bad, but I'd much rather have purple, so holding out for that. tbh, I kind of regret trading in my purple 12 for the red 13 I have now, but at the time I liked the idea of funds going towards COVID-19 research. And yes, I do always get clear cases, because I like to show off the color, but the lack of good colors is making me wait. I'll be waiting until the iPhone 17.
my first phone was 3G - 6 plus - 5s - 8 - 12 mini currently and im very unhappy with my battery it doesnt even last 3 hours with usage but i guess i would get to the IPhone 17 pro when it comes out without the battery problem its a great phone for daily usage

Had my Iphone 8 for 5 years now finally upgrading to 16
Battery health is a non issue as you can always pay for a new one to be installed and you don't need an Apple store for that either btw. Only reason to upgrade would be when your apps lose support or degrade in performance. My XR battery health is 84% so I'm probably good for another 2 years myself.
I had a 12 Pro Max, and I upgraded to a second-hand 15 Pro Max that's literally brand new and still on warranty (dunno what that fellow was thinking letting it go for the 16 Pro Max). The only reason I upgraded was for the Apple intelligence, otherwise, I would have gotten a 14 pro max.
I have the 14 Pro Max and I’m upgrading to the 16 Pro Max due to Apple Intelligence, camera features and improved battery life, of course there’s USB C which would be a reason on its one in any other year. I mean it’s not for Apple Intelligence I probably would’ve just kept using my 14 Pro Max battery life isn’t great even though it says it’s on 87% Health so that’s even another reason for me to upgrade, I probably will wait until the iPhone 20 for my next upgrade if the 18 isn’t much of an upgrade from the 16 Pro Max
If your phone is incredibly slow and cracked or in absolutely any other circumstance, there is absolutely no reason to upgrade to a phone that is exactly the same as the iphone x that was released 7 years ago. Switch and you ll finally be happy
Personally I would stick all of the models you put in the category 1. 16/16 plus box in the either, depending on whether users of those old phones (mine is a 4s, and I do also have a 3g stuck in the drawer!) wish to pick up the pro features or just stick with the basic model. It might be most (having not bothered to upgrade in the meantime) would be satisfied with the basic phone, but to think all of them would do so is dubious. People's priorities change over the years.
I have a 12 that I love but made the mistake of getting the 64 gig model and I haven't had space to update it or take many more photos for months💀..... It looks like it is time for an upgrade thanks for the vid Matt!
Probably i’ll wait for the SE4, i can still hold up the xr until next year and tbh i’m not interested in any of that apple intelligence stuff and the camera button, the reason i chose the SE is because the clean back with only one camera.
Though the dual or triple camera is not a dealbreaker, i’d like my phone to be a good looking one, also it looks cute.
If you’re an SE user like myself, I would wait until next March for the SE4 with a USB C cable and skip the 16 line
15P needs to be in its own tier. It is the only pre-existing iPhone that will be getting Apple Intelligence, and that is probably the biggest reason why anyone would consider upgrading to the 16's. It's going to retain full software support for a while, I'd imagine.
I’m not an annual upgrader by any means. Got my 12 Pro and other than 80% battery, which I don’t notice, it doesn’t feel antiquated. I’ve had no interest in upgrading but I’m tempted by the 16, might give it another year though depending what they’re going to do.

My 11 pro max has been fantastic, but charging has become finicky, battery life continues to dip, and there’s times it glitches out. Time for the 16 pro max!
I finally pre ordered my iPhone 16 pro max 1 TB on Friday the day of the pre orders, I pre ordered it from Verizon… I got the desert titanium. It’ll be delivered to my house on the 27th of September.

I was unclear on either the 16 vs 16 pro.. i just knew that i was definitely going to upgrade regardless, before making my decision.. can you do this for the “watch”? I’m still using the gen 1 😅 and thinking if I should upgrading that too.
I’ll stick with my 11pro max for now.
I’ll wait another year or 2 and see what they bring out.
Being honest though I’ve been with iPhones since the 4 and I’ll be jumping to a foldable if they don’t pull anything out the bag soon.
The fact the 17 is now unlikely to have under-display Face ID and again probably not Touch ID means I might hold off for another 2 years😂

The best is to upgrade your iPhone every 4-5 years. I still got an iPhone 12 Pro Max and I don’t feel like buying the new 16 Pro Max. I’ll wait for the 17 models, what I’m getting? A better camera I barely use? 120 hz? I’ve never use a phone with 120hz so it doesn’t hurts. Better chip? It’s ok because I still playing games with no lag and in high resolution. I want Apple Intelligence but it doesn’t come to Europe until the iPhone 17 presentation, sooo… IPhone 17 Pro Max will be my upgrade 💪🏼😇
