Melinoe was in blood of zeus with her brother Zagreus
I picked it up nearly a week ago and am really enjoying it so far
No but I'm looking forward to it!
Planning to.
I have an important exam coming up, so I decided to celebrate it's (hopefully successful) conclusion with buying and playing Hades 2.
I've been dipping my toes into the first one again tough, to keep the hype going 😅
Can you please make a video covering Atargatis? 🙏😊💚
You know, Greek myth tends to be one of three screws happening.
1. The gods screw over the mortals and so they go on quests
2. The gods screw over each other and mortals are caught in the crossfire
3. Zeus screws something
They are not mutually exclusive
😂😂😂😂😂😂
When is Zeus not screwing something?🤔
Pop Culture: Zeus is a good king of gods and hades is the villain
Mythology: Zeus is the worst dad ever and think he's him. Hades knows how to be a great king and husband to his wife
Facts
Honestly, I like to headcanon that before the events of the Disney Hercules movie, Zeus violated Persephone by disguising himself as Hades and that's why Hades plotted to overthrow him by unleashing the titans.
@@legoking6165 That would be AMAZING twist
@@legoking6165 there are many movies, comics and show that Hades as the villain not just Disney
@@animeandtokuallstarx
I'm aware. But Disneys version is the one that most people are introduced to first and the one that people most often point to when arguing that Hades is an evil god.
People who knows not much of greek mythology will say Zeus is their favorite god but people who knows Greek mythology well will say Zeus might be their least favorite god.
I learned greek myth when I was young, and my personal fave has always been haphaestus. He's always seemed the most "human" out of the Olympus pantheon.
Even knowing what zeus has done he is still my favorite god idk he's like frieza from dragon ball he's a bad guy but you like him.
@@big3fanboy19 Right... Frieza... who.... famously r*pes his family members? Idk man
Hades is my favorite, I like the tall dark and serious type.
@@cathygrandstaff1957 horny. Fitting, considering the conversation is about greek gods.
learning ACTUAL mythology from jon makes me appreciate the funny twists in jake doubleyoo's animations😂
his animations got me into mythology they're so clever and funny💀
😂😂😂
i literally was watching one of his compilations before this
@@winniethepooh-by7bm IKR!
@@silasila4946 i love using those as bachgound noise when i'm doing chores 💯
OH THE GHOST PART MAKES SENSE TO WHY LITTLE SHADES FOLLOW HER AFTER A RUN SOMETIMES
After learning about her, Not only have I become a fan, but I kind of wish she was more well-known. I could see her as a background cameo character in Beatlejuice.
ReardonVerse
I was trying to say that she appears in the RiordanVerse, but I suppose that message was carried across anyway
I apologize for this, but I haven't heard of RiordanVerse before. I'm really not that up-to-date on shows. ^^;
@@Wolfbane382 oh that is probably because it's not a TV show it's actually a book series, or to be more accurate it's a collection of book series by the same author that are all interconnected in the same universe
@@lahlybird895 Very interesting! I'll have to check that out at some point. Thank you. ^^
Wait that means Zag checks the security so no shades can get out (in game, at least) and Mel hunts the ones that do manage to escape, right? Well I think we now know what the endgame loop is going to be!
Also Hestia is the polar opposite of Demeter in this game. Very nice touch
I love when modern developers incorporate real folklore in such a faithful and creative way. Awesome way to keep the history alive and interesting for the current generation!
I've learned more about Greek mythology from this channel than I ever did in my highschool mythology.
I will still die on the hill that Hades is Melinoe's true father, because her powers makes no sense otherwise because all of Zeus's other children have power that is not really based in the underworld magic. but hey thats my stance. Tell me whither or not you agree
I think that's an excellent point!
I stand too that Hades is Melinoe's true father
It could be a two dads or mixed genes kinda thing. Like maybe them both sleeping with persephone is why her limbs are both dark and light
Actually Persephone has a far spookier background than cool ol Hades, if anything the fact that she's the mother would explain the underworld aspect
@@Axindoor Is her background in death or underworld magic?
An obscure Greek mythological figure, at least in our era, is Hermaphreditus. Boy, is his mythology a trip, and I've only been exposed to one or two stories about him.
As for an Egyptian figure that really deserves more attention, I recommend looking into Ptah, the Egyptian God of Creation. When one of your monikers is "the Unmade Creator," you know things are gonna get pretty crazy.
Eris/Discord is my _actual_ Goddess as a Wiccan, and she featured in an actual animated movie (Sinbad, 2003), among lots of other pop culture appearances. She has he own active current "religion" too in modern day Erisians/Discordians you can look into. She seems like just some minor Goddess that just did the one thing with the apple, but considering who her parents might have been, she very well could have been a Major Goddess too.
You see im really excited that she is getting spotlight as i knew about this obscure goddess for a while now and always thought she had amazing potential
I’ve just started playing Hades, and can say, I’m loving it
zues really took the "all the ladies belong to me" thought to heart. didnt even leave his brothers wife alone
Saffron Drip is a cool band name.
Is it me or does Melonoes's description reminds me of Hel, the Queen of the Underworld in Norse Mythology?
My thoughts exactly!
I thought that too especially with the way both of them are described in Rick Riordan books,
The egyptian equivalent of Melinoe is Nephthys. I'm glad to learn this today along with a video to learn more.
Nebt Het, Nepthys, is the goddess of Death, Mercy, Joy and Mourning but not ghosts as such in the way the Greeks interpret them. She was used in heka against Muut, unjustified dead, to force them to behave or to answer questions-- but so is Ra, but in a different manner.
She is considered the most beautiful of all the Netjeru in her calm state, so lovely that she dons a long golden veil lest all work cease in her presence for the staring-- and she's also the most terrible in combat, white and bloodless as a stone statue, personification of the tomb with no exit, her braids long and entangling/strangling like mummy wrappings, her eyes flame and fire pouring from her mouth-- there she is Death, her name written in red ink, and you are finished.
In her first birth, she is the daughter of Bat, the cosmos, who strides out of nothingness uncreated with her as Autibet, the bringer of joy, clasped at her waist like a belt of stars. In her second, she is the celestial Nile, the Milky Way, the daughter of Hapi along with her sister Aset, who is the physical Nile. Ra here, upon looking at her splashing in the water at play with Aset, decided her nature as stardust and light was more befitting his nature as king-- and thus Married her-- giving us the first birth of Anpu, Anubis, son of Ra. (this angered Aset for multiple reasons) Later, at her birth as Geb and Nut's daughter, she finally is allowed to wed and be with her longtime love, Set, lord of storms, who took birth beside her to do so. etc
I could go on. but Egyptian myth is more akin to Indian than Greek myth-- each god has multiple incarnations, death is a transformation and not a finality for all of them, even the arrangement of the offering table brings to mind an abishek over a lingam with the table as yoni with its dripping spout, rather than the horned, ash and blood smeared altars of others.
I'm not much of a gamer but I still love these episodes that connect to games a great deal! Thank you!
glad to hear it! I was worry about video-game-centric episodes because some people have expressed disappointment that I don't only focus on the lore... but I personally love to see how the lore is utilized in the modern day! hence this series existing lol.
Thank you for this video about Melinoe Jon - I don't know if you've watched season 2 of Blood of Zeus but Zagerus and Melinoe make a brief but heartbreaking cameo when Persephone is forced to say goodbye to them as she returns to the surface
Yo just watched that tooo XF lil bummed nyx isn’t chillin in tartarus tho. Woulda been fun to see what direction she’d go.
You should do Macaria next!! I think she’s also a daughter of Hades
She is so underrated and there are probably so many stories about her we will never find 😭 but we must take what we can get! Total think she deserves more time in spotlight and this new game seems like a perfect opportunity!
I am also of belief in other - yet found found - myths, she and Zagures are Hades children because sometimes Hades and Zeus were intertwined therefore it (to me) makes sense. Who knows, maybe we will find more about her one day.
Absolutely agree! I’m a witch who works with deities and Meli is my patron
I love her appearance in Percy Jackson her powers and just general description are so cool
And I also agree with deciding that she is the child of Hades because good Lord the guy needs at least some children love him and Persephone have the only healthy marriage in all of the Greek pantheon so why don't they get a child when all the toxic ones get like 50 each
Yeah that's the interesting thing. Hades gets combined with Zeus and Posiedon a lot in older myths because there's no mention of him and hence probably didn't exist in proto-greek culture. Historians suspect its because myths that are attributed to Hades nowadays had to contend with what was probably centuries of codified myth that had already been attributed to the other two, causing for weird scenarios like the one mentioned in this video. It's my personal opinion that its safe to hand Zag and Mel off to Hades properly because of that
@@noahhodges7697 yes! Play Hades have his children
It's truly crazy how much we know of Greek mythology and yet so little
Please take a look into the Celtic pantheon and Russian. Their ties to other pantheons and lore is so awesome
Definitely cover more obscure ones as well please!
Willytron's art is so good in this episode! I wanna see a BTS of this!!! Also Great video as always, Jon!
Melinoe and Thanatos would’ve been perfect for each other
Neither of them are married so I think we can feel free to ship it as much as we want
@@lahlybird895 In some myths thanatos was partner of another of hades daughters; Macaria, goddess of blessed death
@@MrBakku oh
... Well I mean still not a deal-breaker in Greek mythology
@@lahlybird895 we can only.wait for hades 3

There are some more of the Grimm brothers' stories I would like you to do the messed up origins for one called the three spinners. Another is called the boy we left home to learn about the shivers, and the last is called the little goose girl
Melinoe was in Lore Olympus she's a little kid but she's in it. The first few times you see her she has a white sheet over her head like how kids do when they play as a ghost.
I knew she sounded familiar since I'm such a huge fan of LO. She's definitely extraordinary.
Nice video about Melinoe but actually💁♀️ she's the goddess of madness and nightmares😱 and Makaria who's another child of Hades💀 and Persephone🌺 is the goddess of ghosts👻 and blissful death.
There is a little more info on Melinoe from archaeological evidence. If you're interested, look up the article "Another view of the Pergamon divination kit" by Richard Gordon, which talks about divination tools discovered in Turkey. One of the tools is a triangle with 3 goddesses depicted on it, each with the name of a goddess written above and below them. Each of the goddesses has a connection to the moon and may be interpreted to have the ability to send souls/daimons back to the underworld. With that in mind, the half white/half black limbs may be a reference to the moon, specifically the phases halfway between new moon and full moon. /extreme nerdery
Thank you for always letting me learn and if you have seen the blood of zeus season 2 can you please explore some characters and myths the show is surprisingly good and the portrayal of hades is the best i have seen i love his character soo much
I don't think I have ever heard anything good about Zeus. It's strange to me that he was so revered.
I think its bc bro is basically an incarnation of nature itself, so if u make enough people shit themselves in fear when they hear lightning, eventually theyll start praying to u in hopes of not getting on ur bad side
@SilverAsh-ho4ro I suppose thats fair
I could say the same thing for any lead deity in any major mythology or religion
@lahlybird895 VERY valid point
@@katinapac-baez5083 ha, thank you
Thank you for another great video ❤
I hope the trip is great! Alas, Im too poor to join but I hope you post a video showing off the highlights, so we can enjoy some of it with yall.
I love your vids please keep it up
Been waiting for this
Hades 2 got released when blood of zeus season 2 got out too
And Mel and Zag were shown
Are you going to do videos on the other new characters in Hades 2? I know that you have already done a video on Hecate a long time ago, but maybe you could also do videos on Nemesis, Moros, Odysseus, Chronos, etc?
I would love to!
The hades team always doing great work.
Thanks Jon that was interesting👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great video. Mel's myth is so underappreciated.
Ooo, what a cool deity! And yes, more obscure myths please!
12:05 remember she is the one who wielded the adamant rail
Obscure gods & goddesses are amazing! Yes, it's cool to reinforce or correct what I've known longer than I can remember, but learning about new &/or supporting deities is thrilling.
and to think, detractors think they made this character up out of nowhere.
Hoping Jon hosts a group tour for the 2027 eclipse in Egypt. Definitely will join that.
really like learning more about Greek mythology, the hades game looks so cool 😊🎮
AH, too cool... didn't realize she was a Goddess of Ghosts! AWESOME! Have a great weekend!
5:20 Funnily enough, the CH in chthonic is silent.
Well I'm officially in love with this goddess
It was GOW that got me into norse mythology in the first place, the Jon Solo got me way into mythology and folklore. Now im a folk and mytho nerd (if that's what you can call it. Im still new) i like learning about the fey, other all types of folklore and mythology. Right now im interested in Norse Mythology but i hope to learn more about the European folklores and tales. Maby even study in college. Im 15 i dunno if i can do that but itd be fun.😂
I love Greek, Norse and Egyptian Mythology
Had to go play Hades after watching this, loving the game!
Hades 2 has had an unholy grip on my brain recently so I’m super happy you decided to make this!!! Although we don’t know much about her, supergiant did a great job incorporating aspects of her actual mythology into the game!
I co to Greece this vacation too !
Make a video about Lakapati please
Melinoe is actually featured in Lore Olympus too!
Please do a messed up origins on Damballa
My friend is actually doing a let’s play on twitch for this game
I would love to see something about Odysseus and see what you can find on him
Please try the Goose Girl!
About the reason she has a spectral left arm in her game design is explained by Hecate. I didn't give the exact reason as to not spoil it
✨🖤👻💀✨ ghost goddess...who also into witchcraft, love such dark stuff. Can't wait about the game 🎮
'I'm still drink form last night and think I threw out a perfectly good, dropped Bubbly cause I forgot how to open it. Good vid man.
May i ask if you're willing to try doing Blood of Zeus?
Hey! Jack Klugman in one of his movies played the voice of a toilet for a commercial!
Then again, when he found out the commercial his read was for (toilet bowl cleaner), he nearly choked his roommate!
Hey Jon when the musical Wicked comes out can you do a messed up origin on the Wizard of Oz?
Fuck yes. Been waiting for another video.
Melinoe and Zagreus are brought up briefly in Blood Of Zeus season 2.
Love these videos. I hope he does lovecraft stuff
Jon can you please make a video, in the future, covering Atargatis? 🙏😊💚 I always enjoy your content, and appreciate the research you put in.
Im glad to see other Underworld gods get attention nowadays
3:36 I prefer this art style over the "Hades" game's art style.
Blood of Zeus beg to differ. But I just here to watch😊
Season 2 Episode 2
[tilts head]
half black and half white in form...?
uhm, wasn't there another goddess like that... Nox or Hel, was it?
Sounds like she would be the one that oracles would call upon for protection of the body from invading spirits.
you should dive into more japanese chinese and aztec mythology also turn each messed up mythology into a series
So, just after finishing this video, I began Season 2 of Blood of Zeus and BOOM! Melionë appears xD
I'm so glad I watched this beforehand or I would have no idea who this "Meli" daughter of Persephone and Hades was, shout out to little Zagreus appearing as well who I knew also from his own video of this channel
Yes please to the lesser known!!
This is more interesting than anything we got about her in lore Olympus.
I might get this game. I like mythology and i also like witchy things so melinoe and hecate definitely piqued my interest.
HELL YEA give me obscure gods and goddesses!!!
Jon I am such a fan of yours, which is saying something because I usually am hesitant about dudes who talk about mythology and are rolling my eyes so far back that I can see the back of my head. I appreciate the diversity and citing of your sources, plus your dry sarcasm is just *chef's kiss* I do want to give a little "criticism?" "Feedback?" Whatever you want to call it. I think it's more of just a lack of perspective, and the fact that you perhaps have never had to think of things this way which isn't a bad thing! Regarding your comment about Demeter and previous ones about Artemis, I think you have to take into consideration how the Greeks viewed women and how the writers of the myths were men which I'm sure you're aware of (and how assault practically gallops through 90% of the myths), with this in mind I want to pose a thought experiment: Say you are the brother of a goddess, a brother who actually views his sister as a living being with thoughts and feelings of her own--super rare in this context I know but go with it. You're aware that you are indeed in the minority of gods who think this way, and you are even more aware of how both gods and human men think of women and goddesses...and are fully aware that the goddesses and human women know this. With me so far? Need a snack? Go get one. You good? Awesome, let's continue. So as this god--we'll say you're a god of stories and patron of good doggos--you come home and find your sister has returned from bathing with her nymphs or maybe you come home to find your mother has just returned from hiding your sister in a random cave. Your sister says that she had a dude sneak up on her and just kept staring at her, she knew he was a hunter because of his bow or spear or whatever and she also knew that this area was really far away from the nearest village. What else could she have thought except that "I am in danger and need to do something," or perceive him as a threat? As her brother you probably would have thought she was too nice knowing what men and gods do to their female counterparts. Furthermore, you would probably ask if that cave was far enough or deep enough to hide your sister in. I don't want to seem like I'm chastising or I'm one of those unhinged, screaming and yelling man-hating...TERF...woman person (they are *not* feminists, they are an infection), I am a pot stirrer yes but I also know that the only way to have different voices heard is to have a conversation....like sane adults. Anyway sorry for the novel, and as I said I really enjoy your content and you seem like a dude who just loves mythology and want to learn all about it. Keep kicking ass my friend!
Hades and Persephone were said to have another daughter named Macaria, who is the Goddess of Blessed Death.
Can you do a Greek creation myth animated please?
Goddess have mercy on me.
Hecate is a Titan, no?
I have to wonder if there's actual god/goddess of madness like the madness that Heracles was struck by?
11:45 to think twitter went crazy about the "attractiveness" of the desing, ignoring the whole other cast is hot. I dont get people.
