One of the messed up things about the "seizure episode", is that the sequence with the flashing lights was actually caused by Pikachu, but the entire Porygon family were the ones that got banned from the anime. Porygon had a few, very brief, cameos, and the only appearances Porygon-2 and Porygon-Z ever got were a blink-and-you-miss it cameo in one movie for barely a second.
There's so, so many creatures from Japanese folklore that could be covered. One that comes to mind is the inspiration for Misdreavus that's a woman's head that comes off her body and floats around the house at night.

I was thinking that too. I would imagine creating the scene wouldn't be risky, just going frame by frame and changing the color wouldn't trigger anything... but they obviously had to watch it at least once in real-time before they gave it the final stamp of approval, right? you'd think someone would have been triggered or at least felt like their eyes were gonna blow up like mine did.

    FINALLY, another yōkai! 🙌🏽
Something else to remember, Japanese doesn't necessarily do plural nouns in the same way English does. So one kitsune, two kitsune, many kitsune. Just like our words for deer and moose. But the pronunciation is definitely something western speakers seem to struggle with, so I wouldn't worry about it as long as you try your best and don't go way off the rails and do something like say kamikaze "came-y kays." Yes, I've heard someone say that.

I was thinking that when listening to the different ways it's pronounced. Just about every language spoken by millions of people out there has different dialects; the way the language instructors (both human and electronic) pronounce the word is just one way of pronouncing it.
Look at the English language. You have different dialects from each country that speaks it, not to mention certain terms found only in certain countries or regions of that country. For example, the rear storage of a car is called a "trunk" in the U.S., but it's called "boot" in the U.K. Likewise, the part that covers the engine is called a "hood" in the U.S., but "bonnet" in the U.K.

    • @robinkholmes7127

"Kitsune" is not Japanese script, it's Latin. All you have to do is stop calling 700 000 000 people "non-Americans" because to you they're jsut avocado-picking animals, and learn the LATIN pronunciation. That people were kind enough to transcript Japanese words INTO, including 狐.
It jsut seems like a lot of effort dedicated TO being lazy. You seem federally hell-bent on treating Latin script as footnote to what it means to live on this continent, and instead create a divide unlike anything seen in Africa or Asia. Where "American" is a privilege only to federal subjects, while IMPERIAL subjects harvest your food without the protection of labor laws YOU could be voting for. And they cannot, because USA doesn't even uphold fair cross-national trade treaties. They have some sort of FAKE American rights for fake Latin America, because they don't swear fealty to ONE federal empire. That can't even pronounce how its words are written.
Starting with the fact, that English never was successful in inventing a written form so now you have to play games wriiting "keet-soo-nay" or "keat-snoo" or whahtever, pretend THOSE ones are the "more accurate" depiction. Because YOU KNOW that "kitsune" already utterly fails to replicate the sounds you pretend to understand through these written forms.

As of 6:14 you're doing fine pronouncing it the way most non-native Japanese people pronounce it. The e in the end is audible and the i is pronounced correctly too. I think, in Japanese, the stress on tsu is a bit less than ki and ne. The u is not gone, at least I pronounce it, and I think it is better to pronounce it than to not pronounce it. Passing grade from me on pronounciation so far. It doesn't need to be perfect. Jon is not a native Japanese speaker, and (I assume) hasn't studied the language. (8:48) So that’s not entirely correct, there’s different ranks of kitsune in Japanese folklore & two main groups… the zenko (good foxes) & nogitsune or Yakan (the bad cunning/tricksters, or neutral *while not inherently evil but are selfish & act according to their own will without consideration of others*).
The ranks of a kitsune are:
    • Ashirei or Ashireiko (ordinary foxes or ones that’s are indistinguishable to a normal fox & don’t have the ability to take on a human form).
    • Chiko, the second rank, where the kitsune begins to gain extra tails as they age (up to 9 tails).
    • Kiko, or spirit fox, is the third rank. Usually attained around 500 years old, they no longer have to eat (unless they choose to) but can consume magical energy or human life-forces to increase their power. These are believed to be the messengers of Inari Okami.
    • Tenko are the highest rank, they dwell in the spirit realm & don’t concern themselves with the mortal world unless summoned. They have no physical bodies but can make one if they want to.
    • Kūku, while considered below the Tenko they are the last rank, essentially they’re retired. They may choose to give up their ability to return to the mortal world or live out the rest of their life in a physical body (but they cannot change it one chosen).

Okami does what Jon does.......but covers FAAAAAAAAAAR MORE.
there's Kamaitachi.....the red and blue ogres......the story of Princess Kaguya and Hitomi......the story of Issun and explaining how they handled the story of Susanoo-o and Orochi.....the Brush gods showing up as mostly signs of the Zodiac (with the exception of the Tiger and the Cat)........the scrolls possibly being a reference to itamomen and so on.
Okami is a who's who of Yokai and Japanese Stories.
it would take him FOREVER to deep dive into it. Not saying it cant be done........just wanted to point out it would take forever.

This is a very informative episode. I like learning about these creatures. Even though Kitsunes are Japanese folklore, there are stories about fox spirits or demons in other cultures as well. Fox demons are depicted in many Chinese movies and there is a story of a trickster fox spirit of Native American origin played out in the show Gargoyles. Back to Japanese stories, the Kitsune makes me think of the anime Inuyasha that has a young fox demon named Shippo as one of the characters and another fox-like creature named Kirara as a companion to another character. Also, let's not forget the infamous Nine-Tailed fox demon that was put into Naruto as a baby. Interesting stuff. Thank you for sharing this information.

There are a bunch of vengeful and malevolent spirits you could do videos on, Kuchisake-onna and Yuki-Onna are both pretty interesting. That Netflix series Blue Eye Samurai references an Onryo which is another type of Japanese Demon Spirit. You have a mountain of Yokai lore to pull from for videos, of course the logical thing to do is make a Kappa or Tengu video after doing Tanuki and Kitsune.

People just associate shape shifting nine tailed foxes with Japan because of anime
There are also many stories of shape shifting nine tailed foxes in Korea.
But there is no doubt they originated in China where records of nine tailed and / or shape shifting foxes go back to at least 500bc
By the Han dynasty artistic carvings of nine tailed foxes had already become very common. This shows the myths had already spread through the populace far from their earliest recorded mentions in records from the central yellow River valley in the Zhou dynasty.
The stories and artistic depictions of nine tailed shape shifting foxes go back to at least 500bc in China.
The beliefs in foxes show a clear path of evolution from the early mentions in things like the Zhou dynasty records, classic of mountains and seas, Han funerary art, etc. to Tang and Song and even later popular fiction and folk religious beliefs of the Qing.
However in Japan they simply show up fully evolved in identical form to what was being told in China at the time, during the greatest period of mass importation of Chinese texts, myths, fashion, technology, religious practices, customs etc.
The intro about super unique Japanese beliefs is kind of ironic in that there are all kinds of stories about really unique supernatural creatures in Japan, but he is talking about one that was unquestionably imported directly from China.
There are some differences in beliefs regarding foxes between China, Japan, and Korea.
But in general the stories almost always follow the basic themes and progressions developed in China. If anything you can say that the seductress aspect is slightly more emphasized in Japanese folklore, the human eating aspect in Korean, and the energy vampire and contracted God / spirit aspect in China.
The thing is that all of those themes were already developed when the fox stories were imported to Japan and Korea and stories focusing on any of those aspects can be found in any of those countries.
So at best that's just an overly broad generalization and all of those aspects of fox spirits are part of the shared heritage of the folklore of all of those countries.
Also if you are interested there have been large numbers of books and academic papers published on the folklore of foxes in each of those countries.

Maintaining the same pronunciation of the same word among different languages and regions is almost impossible, because how it's pronounced in its language of origin won't always accommodate another accent. If you listen to how English words are pronounced in Japanese, they'll basically never end on a consonant sound. Even the official pronunciations of English words are different in American, British and Australian. And I'm sure "kitsune" would sound a little different if you heard it in say an Osaka accent. I'd say the most important thing is to just do your best, but not get too hung up on the nuance.
