ha.. true. the first time I saw this I was legit crippled for almost a day. I could not process all the feeling of these games as is but this one hit me so hard. Persona will always be the best series.
Actually... I just finished the game I thr first time, I didn't understand that he was dead... I needed to watch it again a few times and see comments.... When I saw it again... I cried every single tear of my body.. I am very young and discovered the game with this remake but I think I am mature enough to truly understand the message of this game. Even if I finished it within 2 weeks, i think this game truly changed me. I starting to understand the meaning of life. I still can't get over this end.. It's complicated to know that this game is over and I will never live an experience like that ever again. Thank you, Persona. Memento Mori.
Don't be like me and learn to treasure things more not after the fact. I played Persona 5 now 3 after moving cross country after college and getting distracted by the 1001 things that come with basically restarting life. Every friend I had basically moved away too, started families, died, or just grew apart 😢. The grew apart was actually the worst because the others are a part of life but growing apart meant both parties stopped trying, and it's a distance that can't really be repaired with distance
I know a lot of people don’t want the protagonist to come back (neither do I) but I hope his soul can one day be freed, and he can spend the afterlife with his friends once it’s their turn to join him. The death of the protagonist isn’t what gets me sad, it’s that despite dying his soul isn’t at rest.
I kind of feel like it was, though. I think that last summon put his soul at rest because it was the power of all of his bonds that allowed him to summon it, and it took all of his HP when he unleashed his last attack on Nyx. He looked totally at peace lying in Aigis' lap, and hearing that his friends remembered.
@binette6832 His soul is still fighting to Hold back Erebus from reaching Nyx. Elizabeth is trying to find a way to free him from the duty. He isn't able to pass on, unless Elizabeth can find a way to stop Erebus.

I wish they kept, "All you need is something simple, like someone to take care of." That line made the ending stick for me back then. "Just caring about someone can be enough" Doesn't quite have the same impact, but it still stands.

I think it's intentional that he doesn't get to see his friends one last time. You never know when your time is up. Not everyone gets to say goodbye and that's what makes death so painful. There is this saying "Don't be sad that it's over, be glad that it happened."
It's even more sad realising that this game was about how important connections are, yet persona 3 team was most detached from each other and separated in persona 4 arena after Makoto's death.
Just because they have their own lives doesn´t means that they lost that connection, that is mentioned in the end of P4. No matter how far they are their bonds are there.
@@amarant1275 and you're right, they really are still close, and it's even realistic how much they fought but in the end they became like family, and that's why I adore the Persona 3 cast the most.

I love the allegories to Christ in this game. In traditional Christian iconography, the image of Mary holding Christ is prominent. Also the theme of “defeating death/nyx” in persona 3 mirrors that of Christ “trampling down death by death and bestowing life to those in the tombs,” lyrics from a Greek hymn. I just love as a Christian how beautifully this game surmises part of what makes Christ’s victory over death so beautiful, and also partly tragic (suffering and crucifixion needed to make it happen)

The best Persona title in the series. 4 and 5 were good but they didnt give nearly enough as an emotional impact as 3 did. To willingly lay down your life for the world knowing they wont even remember your sacrifice. It made the moment where those who mattered most to him did remember. Against all certainty. They remembered. He held out all that time against his inevitable death off a small sliver of hope they would so he could pass on peacefully.

It was fun to see the speculations from people thinking that because this was a "Remake" that Persona 3 Reload was going to go down a similar path like a certain other "Remake" (which is getting its own sequel here in a few weeks) and change up the plot. But it does seem like if they were to do that, that would have gone against the story of the original altogether. It is a sumber ending, but one that some fans probably wouldn't want to see changed. Maybe certain elements within the story to be changed, but not the ending.

Those endings were so much more rewarding than Vanilla. Makoto deserves Besides this ending feels weird considering Aigis is almost making a confession to me when I literally rejected her for another girl.
@@LCardosed92 Though this is definitely a downside for Players only interested in romance section, Nonetheless it's more powerful for Aigis to be there first, Makoto's the only person she remembered long since 10 years ago (Also didn't have her memory wiped out initially like everyone else) and wanted to thank him for everything. It's tragically poetic, Initially for rest of her life she all she knew is being programmed to be a strict, obedient war-machine and considered disposable, But after meeting SEES she starts to soften up and discovers understood importance of friendship and memories, and to truly enjoy and express life humans despite limited time. The one who helped her reach destination to realization is going to leave the world soon, She's well aware of the hours remaining that she has to make best of it given by making sure his last promise that everybody unites at graduation day comes true.
@@GladiatorRocks I understand your POV, but I personally care more for Makoto than Aigis. This is the end of his Hero's Journey, he deserves to have his final moments with the one he bonded the most. It is not just fanservice, but his final "reward" before becoming the seal. What better way to go to the other side other than seeing the most important person? Aigis still has a whole journey ahead of her in The Answer, there is plenty of time to develop her more. Also in the PSP NG+ endings Aigis also has this very same speech. Very similar to this one, but they add the romantic lover as well later. Very little is actually lost compared to the vanilla ending. Overall is more rewarding for the players and makes Makoto's final moments more special.
@@LCardosed92 I mean you basically get what you're asking for if you romanced Aigis. The only reason P3P added multiple endings is because it was easier to do in its visual novel nature. In Reload they focused on a more cinematic approach to this ending using pre-rendered scenes following the original route portrayed in the base games and the movies, and I agree with it's approach. Reloads ending was beautiful because of it.
I’d like to think that instead of dying and sealing away Nyx, he got transported to the loop in Fortnite because of the recent *Alleged* Fortnite collab.
Makoto/Minato whatever he's called is literally the best protagonist in the Persona series and the only Persona protagonist that actually died, I cried during the movies and watching the game, I've never played the game precisely because of the protagonist's death since I would ball my eyes out. Guys I haven’t been able to watch the ending yet it keeps getting blurry every time I watch it. Real note this game was a wild ride and I’m so happy I stuck through it till the end. As my first time playing it was through reload truly an amazing experience about death and dealing with our inevitable demise. This game made me want to live.
As an old persona fan i love to see that they stuck with the og ending but as someone who was treated to p4g and p5r i want to see a ending where he is alive even as a non canon end
I'm reading a fanfiction called "Change of Engagement" where Mitsuru is the main love interest instead of Aigis and Makoto survives the events of P3. Once I finish that, I will probably prefer that version over the game because I need happy endings in my stories.
Him being alive would ruin the entire point of the game, the guys ultimate Persona is Messiah for a reason, even as non-canon it would just be going against the whole point

Everything else happening honestly
He made sure they had their memories back, to make sure the promise they made could be held. He held onto his soul and life until they got up to see him, and he smiled, knowing what he did, his answer to life. He died happily and peacefully

No you're lucky tbh. I didn't realize what was happening until the "my eyes feel heavy" popped up. It's so sudden and shocking that it's honestly really hard to shake this empty feeling off. If I had known ahead of time, I could have prepared for this beautiful and painful ending
Having played 4 and 5 first i was expecting 3 to be a a happy game as well. God was i wrong, i felt so empty staring at that new menu screen after the game ended.
When the choice to close my eyes came up I stared at the screen for the longest time as if Im having flashbacks of the entire journey that lead to this moment while I was bawling my eyes out. I've seen this ending multiple times in the past, I am no stranger to this game and its ending and yet, the whole remake of this scene made me bawl my eyes out like a kid.
I’m pretty new to the Persona Franchise, my first game was P5 Royal. But the one that enticed me the most was P3. I asked my friends about P3 and they warned me that this games story was a lot heavier than P5. So I was mentally prepared for it, what I wasn’t prepared for was his death, and Aigis’s vow to protect him. There were hints that he was doomed to die, but the part where I realized he was going to was the part where he wanted to close his eyes. That’s what hit me the hardest, Aigis being unaware that the person she vowed to follow for the rest of her life, was to a person whose life was about to end.
The fact that the MC had to pure will in order to keep his dying consciousness alive until graduation just makes the ending THAT much more heartbreaking
9:05 i really like how they used this shot from the original briefly I think what was good about the ps2 version is that you had no idea what was happening or how dire things were because it just looked so normal
This was one of the most beautiful endings to a game I've ever seen. Slowly seeing that Aigis isn't just saying all of these things just to pour her heart out, but realizing the more emotional she gets, that she begins to sense he is dying, these are his last moments, and she doesn't want him to feel like he is. Protecting him all the way until he closes he eyes and his protector being the last thing he sees. You can also tell she knew he was dying because in the very last scene, she was serene, but her hand had moved off of his. She knew he was gone.
What's sad is knowing that we can't say RIP to him, since his soul is not in peace at all. His physical body gave up without the soul, and now, after doing so, he's still fighting to keep the seal, even after losing his life.
@@jacopom.7477 I understand that to an extent but unless you play the answer or randomly hear about it online you are very unlikely to understand what actually happened here and will likely just assume he fell asleep.

It's even more sad realising that this game was about how important connections are, yet persona 3 team was most detached from each other and separated in persona 4 arena after Makoto's death.
They still connect and close to each other, but they also decided to live a life that they see fit. They are part of Shadoe Op for a reason.

Notice the way Aigis holds Makoto like Mary holds Christ in the pieta, and how how the wind turbines in the background are like Golgotha
There's a reason his ultimate persona is Messiah

It was fun to see the speculations from people thinking that because this was a "Remake" that Persona 3 Reload was going to go down a similar path like a certain other "Remake" (which is getting its own sequel here in a few weeks) and change up the plot. But it does seem like if they were to do that, that would have gone against the story of the original altogether. It is a sumber ending, but one that some fans probably wouldn't want to see changed. Maybe certain elements within the story to be changed, but not the ending.

I never felt like; so miserable...

What did ATLUS mean by this?
This was one of the most beautiful endings to a game I've ever seen. Slowly seeing that Aigis isn't just saying all of these things just to pour her heart out, but realizing the more emotional she gets, that she begins to sense he is dying, these are his last moments, and she doesn't want him to feel like he is. Protecting him all the way until he closes he eyes and his protector being the last thing he sees. You can also tell she knew he was dying because in the very last scene, she was serene, but her hand had moved off of his. She knew he was gone.
I actually didn't get he died there, thought he just fell asleep, so in the DLC i was just like "What the hell are they talking about ??? who died ?"
What's sad is knowing that we can't say RIP to him, since his soul is not in peace at all. His physical body gave up without the soul, and now, after doing so, he's still fighting to keep the seal, even after losing his life.
I've said it before, but when I first saw this ending, I was honestly confused. I didn't even realize he died at first.

@deesnyder8201 That's the point its not supposed to be clear, you're makoto you are dying why wouldn't the screen fade to black and credits role after you close your eyes
I played Persona 5 now 3 after moving cross country after college and getting distracted by the 1001 things that come with basically restarting life. Every friend I had basically moved away too, started families, died, or just grew apart 😢.
The grew apart was actually the worst because the others are a part of life but growing apart meant both parties stopped trying, and it's a distance that can't really be repaired with distance
and thus born the legendary Door-kun
T-posing almightily since 2006.
Can someone explain to me what's with p3 and doors?..
@Zu_kyo the mc became a "door", sealing off death by using his own body.
@@Beysonix Apocalypse level last boss was too strong. P3MC chose to seal away the boss. The seal is a door and the lock is his soul, literally hanging on the door like Jesus on a cross.

Having beaten the original at a young age, this ending ruined me. After so long, living more of life, I went into the remake happy I could play one of my favorite games of all time so easily. The ending ruined me just as it did back then but with a renewed context. 10/10 game.
I kinda like the presentation of the old one better. How they kept your friends running to the roof top a separate cutscene from aigis' monologue to you... it felt more poignant and personal that way imo
Yeah the old one was sadder
All these years later, and they STILL missed the perfect opportunity to have Makoto speak here. Come on it was RIGHT THERE, guys!
The dead can't speak man. Especially not someone who at this point is actually just straight up a dead man walking.
I mean, in the original you got some dialog choices in this moment, like to tell Aigis not to cry. I don't see why they couldn't have put it here. @@Youhadabadday2021
Just finished it. Honestly, its an amazing ending, and, as an other comment pointed out, the remake made the ending feel even more intimate and powerful. That being said, even though the ending makes sense, i hate the fact that the Protagonist dies in the end. Unless somebody revives him somehow, we wont be seeing him in the canonical Persona-games. Really sad, imo.
I am screaming out of pain anger and frustration... as well as sorrow.
God I’m didn’t realised he died in the ending until seeing these comments, Jesus Christ that makes it so much sadder than I thought
Same i was happy because i thought he was sleeping 😢
Just beat the game. This was my first persona title... I was looking for some games to play on game pass and I decided to give persona a shot. I got instantly hooked.
Man... I went full blind... I didn't know anything about the plot, so it was all new to me
I just want to say that this ending broke me, I was not prepared 😢
