- Today’s episode is all about my five favorite reverbs. But to be honest, I'm going to end up showing you a lot more reverbs, because that’s how I roll. I'm not apologizing for it.

Josh: "The rule is it has to be a pedal"
Also Josh: *pulls out spring reverb tank that attaches to a pedal* LOL
Danelectro had a pedal that I think had the tank inside the pedal (it also had a “kick” pad for that fun “sploing” sound of hitting the tank.
Omg I just posted this exact comment almost word for word!
And an Eventide unit with a thousand other effects. Love this show :)
Question is if that's a pedal with an attached tank or a tank with a pedal hanging from it? I don't know, maybe a lawyer or a phylosopher around here to set this thing...
Yea. A reverb tank is run essentially like a miniature amp fed through a spring. Is it a pedal to have a foot switch for my amp?
I think not JOSH!
Josh: "I like spring reverb because it's subtle"
Also Josh: "lets shake the springs like 50 times so everyone knows it's a real spring reverb"
Need a “Cool is not cool, good is cool” on a shirt immediately.
Still waiting….
The older you get the less you obsess with gain and obsess with reverb more.
I am getting old to the point of not caring about vintage or boutique gear anymore and stick to a 2019 Fender Vintera Tele into a 2021 Fender Blues Junior amp haha.
Ummm, that's a really profound statement.
And it didn't totally go over my head.... 😏
I used to love heavy metal distortion ut now im into od getting there i think
So true, I never gave a crap about clean tone in my teens and early 20’s, now mid 30’s have a Series 3 Reverb on all the time and I run my tubes on the edge of break up. I love hearing the guitar.
Not me. Reverb is easy. OD and distortion are still much harder to perfect. It is a lifelong search.
“Rule number 1, it has to be a pedal”
Immediately pulls out a pedal that runs into a tank
Yeah and I'm pretty sure he broke rule no 2 with the h9
Josh could be a Senator like that.
I feel like this episode taught us more about Josh's obsession than about reverb pedals.
Nah it was missing his whole, "i don't have this pedal, it's okay" speech and then Nick's jingle.
And I'm 💯 ok with that
Always has been
A massive thanks to all of you at JHS for featuring our pedals 😍
We are so proud to be your selection for analog spring reverb with the Element 💪🤘
Merci ❤️
et merci pour palf :)
Your pedal is very cool never seen before, will have a look ,nice job eh!
Nobody tell Josh that the h9 has tons of delay algorithms, he'd have to redo the episode
DUDE the drums were so perfect on the ducking reverb song. Go Nick
I was going to say the same thing. Great job Nick.
The snare is always so snappy!
It's such creative drumming. Very musical. How do you learn that stuff?
@@sandervisser790 how do you mic them nick what kids are you using
Such a talented dude.
the drumming was on another level today
riiight?
Yep!
As always though...
Always is!!!
Dudes my kind of drummer
This is my favorite sitcom.
I'm getting back into guitar after many years. I was a straight-into-the-amp guy back in my punk/indie days, but I'm looking forward to exploring pedals now as a home player. Your videos are fantastic. You're very generous with your knowledge and in giving airtime to different makers. Thank you!
I want a “We Speak Not of Flerb” t-shirt...
That
Yeah that
Agreed!
Make it happen Josh!
Came here to say the same thing
Josh: demonstrates the fingerprint feature of the gold H9
Me: curb stomps my smartphone
Half expected a Gollum impression there... “my precious”
I am so fortunate to be an early fan of Mono. My friend was friends with them back in Japan and gave me their very first demo. I remember thinking "instrumental rock? LAME." But from the very first notes I was hooked and became a rabid fan. Favorite show was attending the concert in NYC with an orchestra they recorded for the DVD, one of my favorite all time concerts. Makes me really happy to see them get some love here!
Finally some love for the Blue Sky. Was my first serious pedal and will never leave my board. It's just so good.
I was called the Flerb in Highschool. I also didn’t have any friends... it was more of a title than a nick name. It was more like: here comes the flerb
How did you become the Potto? Was that an upgrade?
So, do you like The Potto better than the Flerb?
Not much of an upgrade at that.
Get over it, dude; it’s soo in the past. (Man, what a flerb.)
Sometime’s I cant tell if Josh is kidding about things. Then he goes and shakes that spring tank and I about lost it
He has a wonderfully British sense of deadpan humour
As always, I watch mainly for the guitar stuff and Josh, but am always blown away by Nick's KILLER TASTY drumming (ghost notes, single hand rolls, and that drum tone...)
Awesome show. Engaging, informative, actually funny. Love the record time segment.
i loved the infinte plate joke! My "favorite" reverb sound are the spring tanks in my amp, but I love my OBNE Dark Star, since it can do all the crazy long ambient reverb stuff, with modulation, and has a footswitch to hold the reverb infinitely, it's just really cool for big ambient pad reverb. I almost think of it as an overtone device sometimes more than a reverb
Flerb might be one of the most hated settings of all time, but that really goes to show you how well the other 2 settings are because that pedal is everywhere
The Holy Grail had no rivals for a long long time. That's why.
Unpopular opinion: the flerb would be cool if there was a mix control for it. Give me a tiny drop of flerb
@@seang4 The cathedral has a flerb setting that can control. Think the oceans 11 can as well actually.
I got the Neo specifically because it ditched flerb and added plate (my personal favorite type). Mine is always on, though I adjust the knob a little bit here and there.
Why does no one talk about neo holy grail? That comes with plate instead of flerb. Way more useful
Got the Series 3 Reverb for Christmas. Straight forward great reverb is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you for jamming with the BlueSky. The Verbzilla sounded awesome too!
I love the MXR reverb. Lots of sounds in a standard enclosure.
I like the digitech Polara except for how difficult it is to read anything labeled… sounds great though for a reasonably priced unit 😊
Empress Reverb. I love it. I have been chasing delay for years, buy it was really reverb that I needed. I heard the 'dark spring" setting demoed, then immediately sold my Blue Sky for the Empress. No regrets. But the Blue Sky is cool.
Holy cow the jam and tone for the Holy Grail might be the best thing you’ve ever played on this channel. Tasty tone!
Hats off to the jams this week, gentlemen - very, very enjoyable.
Recently got an Electro Harmonix Oceans 12 and it's pretty darn killer. It's a feature rich stereo, dual reverb with a bunch of cool, fun, and inspiring sounds - the hall is great and I personally have a ton of fun with reverse reverb.
MONO was one of the loudest bands I've ever heard. And one of the most serene and beautiful. Their lead guitarist wept during my favorite song of theirs. Saw them on tour once with Pelican, and another time with Boris.
I agree. I saw them way back when they toured behind "Walking Cloud and Long-Ass Title" as I like to call it, and my ears are still ringing.
@@lf170 lol I forgot about this post. I have a brief update, I saw Sunn O))) in February...sorry MONO, but you've been dethroned.
@@beelbrother1648 Nice. Thinking back, a Godspeed You Black Emperor show back in 2002 is probably tied with Mono for loudest!
@@lf170 Man I feel like a moron. I bought tickets for Godspeed this year, and I completely forgot to attend. Being a father has given me brain damage.
Parenthood will do that!@@beelbrother1648
Very impressed from the first pedal and the drummer compliments the sounds of those reverbs! Thanks. Love to see more vids like this!
Love Josh and the crew. Just the biggest and most knowledgeable pedal nerds AND give us cool jams
C3PO wants his Eventide back. JHS sayin'.
I like it when one of my pedals is featured on this show, especially when it’s one I got cheap. I’ve been into Line 6 tonecore for a while, it looks like the days of getting them cheap are numbered.
I just ordered a used verbzilla a week ago. Glad I found one before this video came out. Haha
Well played sir. I'm on my second Verbzilla, bought just weeks ago, I let the first one go in a swap.
Always so much fun to watch your videos guys! Big hugs from Berlin😀🍻
I absolutely adore Mono! I remember seeing them live in 09 and a kid fainted during the big moment in “Yearning”. Best show I’ve ever seen.
My first amp was a Marshall Valvestate. I used to kick it to make that sound where Josho-boy shook the springs here. I thought it was the speaker shaking that made that sound for many years.
Reverb might be the most important effect because It can really evoke emotion, & tune your tone, but you can also turn it into other effects with a bit of manipulation. Tremolo, Reverse, Rotary, etc...
Great video and amazing sounds...also, props to the drummer he sounded fantastic, love his snare sound!
Blooming love my Marshall Reflector. Straightforward, easy to use, all the sounds sound great.
Verbzilla is the first verb pedal I bought (with gift money, too). I keep it on basically one setting, where it's similar to the Barton Hall sound from Grateful Dead's 5/8/77 show. With an envelope filter into it, I can pretend to play a Jerry line or two. To me it's like my favorite local pizza joint. It's perfect.
plot twist , the wall behind him is his pedalboard
It's not just that wall, that whole room is like that, and he has more in drawers under the shelves and in his office (which also has the Sovtek amps), they used to also do the jams in a different room with all of Josh's guitars and amps on the wall, as well as his private collection at home. You watch this channel enough and you see just how much gear acquisition syndrome Josh has. 😂
😄👍🏻
This is like an episode of "JHS Pedals". You're all very satirically humorous. Downplayed and undercut yet... infinite. btw that Line 6 pedal was/is just how you billed it. Awesome pedal !!
Nick is such a damn good smooove drummer! Never over plays. Always in the pocket.
Waiting for the “Cool is not cool; Good is cool” amp.
JHS being a sound engineer/designer/musician and very small tubes available, please design a real tube, real spring , real small reverb tank/unit/pedal. Love the topic(s), love the show!
Stick in a mini steel plate there somewhere and we'll call it a deal
And then name it "The Fake"...
I almost said "The Fake News", but then said "Nah" to that...
Great video. Great info. Thanks for keeping it real!
Appreciate, as always, your passion for your work.
Peace,
Bill
My first was also an RV-3, that I bought new in the late eighties or early nineties (whenever it was that it was released) and I still use it! I also have an Ocean’s 11, and it’s really all most folks would need. Awesome selection of types, and the spring and shimmer are standouts!
I've never made it to an episode within a minute of upload hell yeah
By the way, the drum sound is also astoundingly good
I'd like an episode on how to get that drum tone!
Love your show, dude. Please keep it up!
The Cooper FX Arcades needs its own episode! I love it.
Killer music as always.
Most of the people spending this kind of money on music gear already have large pedalboards anyways. You could easily mount the spring tank to the front or bottom.
Ever try the Stargazer by Hungry Robot? It’s my favorite reverb. It’s a dual reverb that does real nice sounds from subtle to ambient reverb. The two reverbs in the pedal are exactly the same circuit. So the common thing to do with this pedal is to set one as a subtle/always on reverb, and set the second reverb to a more extreme/lush ambient reverb. Now you have two very different sounding reverbs that you can switch between very easily. The ambient style reverb that it does is very nice because it’s not like a lot of the other ambient reverbs that you commonly hear. It doesn’t have those higher octave undertones like most others, which makes the Stargazer more musical and useful in my opinion.
Starlite user here. I can concur. A very cool ambient verb.
Watching from in front, listening from behind :)
Mixes sound great and the perspective shift keeps giving me ear candy
This video is exactly what I was looking for; thanks!!
Also, your drummer is on point.
MONO is great! Their collab with World’s End Girlfriend is potentially my favorite post rock album of all time.
Man I'm pretty sure their World's End Girlfriend collab is the album I'd reach for if I knew I had 80 minutes left to live
HOF Mini with Jonsi’s preset using an ebow, I won’t lie, it’s awesome......
this came at a great time as i am looking for a new reverb. bless you and your research.
Glad that a pedal maestro has given the thumbs up for the holy grail. I’ve had one for about 15 years and it’s finally given up the ghost. I’ve ordered the same one again. Most others seem to have too many options and would take a load of faffing / adjusting between sounds live. This one instantly sounds great and you can just flick between spring and hall depending on the song. No messing
When no one's around,do the gold H9 and Nick's microphone secretly hangout together?
Wasn't it just yesterday that Nick was ranking on a scale of Turquoise to Mustard Yellow...and then today he shows up in a turquoise hat and mustard yellow hoodie? Are there no rules?
The only rule is, there are no rules…
... and no delay combos in this episode.... except for the h9.
Amazing episode and great jams, and i also love Mono too!
You’re absolutely right about the plate setting on the Blue Sky! I’ve used it for years!
And another hell yes to a ducking reverb. Ducking delay. Everything ducking. The only way to use time based effects with fuzz or high gain.
Cheers!
doesn’t the H9 break the rules about Reverb + Delay??
100% yes
Nah -he just said No Reverb plus Delay...never said anything about Reverb plus Delay plus everything else...:-)
340% yes
Rules do not apply to those who make them.
Had the same exact thought and it is driving me crazy. Not only does the H9 have a ton of delays (and every other effect) in it, but the Blackhole algorithm actually even has a multi-tap delay within it. LOL
The "Walrus" Audio - "Slo" is pretty B.A. for a Reverb pedal.
Mine should be showin up tomorrow!
@@Magmoormaster hope you have a blast with it, dude! I got one a couple months back and can’t get enough of it
I wasn't able to spend a ton of time with it but WHOOOO BOY!!! It's great!!
Yeah even the Fathom. Really unique stuff always from Walrus.
Great episode, keep up the great work booooyyyysssss!
I love this show please keep making more!!
Well... I was saving up for a bluesky but looks like I’ll need to double down on my savings. Anyone else been personally victimized by Josh’s market influence? Haha
Flerb is the best reverb of all time, change my mind
Nope.
Did that work?
I’m a big fan of flerb. I use it all the time on bass for post-punk tones. All this flerb hate has me almost canceling JHS...
That's cool that you like it!
I was just joking..
Embrace the Flerb!!
I like flerb too
Awesome ! Keep doing what you do!
Nice job, Nick. I like that beat that was on "There's a Spaceship in the Barn".
Wow I haven't seen an Ebow used since youthgroup praise and worship from the early 2000's
Phil Keaggy has used an Ebow a lot.
"Small Town Sleuth" had some Deep Sea Diver vibes going on.
The editing on this is amazing.
Oh yeah, Ive been waiting for this for soo long
In my opinion Surfy Industries Surfybear would have definitely deserved a mention
⬆️
@@user-rx4nm4vd6w polara has been on my board for years.
"I'm not feeling comfortable!!!!" :Nick
love the editing on this one!
Dear Josh, I really love your jams. I promise to buy them if you put them on apple or Spotify. Also I will slowly buy all your pedals to help keep you and your employees employed! You’re so awesomely quirky and cool. I have started my JHS collection with the Bonzai. Love it!!
the unimaginable pain when the presenter but multiple fingerprints on that gold h9...
Actual spring reverb pedal has to be Van Amps' "Sole Mate." It's a wee Fender tank, basically. I am also in love with my Caroline Guitar Company Meteore, which is, I dunno, magic or something.
Amaaaaazing as always.
Superb episode. Music was one of the best. Maybe the best. Drums were really interesting and stupendous
The Holy Grail Max is better. Maybe if they could put the Holy Grail Max in a nano size 🤔...
Agreed!
Are you going to invite everyone to the Gold-Plated Eventide H9 turn-on party?
Love u so much guys. You are so funny and plenty of good advices. Since I am following u, my saving is going down dramatically. loll
I can teleport now. Fantastic hook. you guys must jam so groovy. Well done.
I love watching Josh. However he is starting to show signs he is sick of our shit and may stab Nick by years end.
Oh yeah and great reverbs
Yo stop with the spoilers of season 23... You people already ruined the reveal that Addison was replaced by pedal bot 5000 on season 17! Honestly this attitude is ruining the show for me
Don't touch it. Don't point even. It can't be played. Never. No. You've seen enough of that one.
Gotta love that reference

This one was extra great. Thanks guyz
"Night, night little buddy." Oh my... that's awesome!
Loved MONO for many years now. It's very emotional music, that often ends in chaos. Came across them because I like instrumental/post-rocky things. For a future Record Time check out Mogwai's "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will". They're a Scottish band and one of the best in the genre (instrumental alternative rock/post-rock). It ranges from very cinamotographic to absolute emotional rollercoasters. If you ever get the chance check them out live! Amazing band!
A duck Reverb? Ducks don’t echo, so like, what’s really in that pedal?
*mystery intensifies...
Very nice episode, thank you Josh (and the whole JHS team!)
I'm deeply involved in reverb and I think is my favorite kind of effect for guitar. I like a lot the wall of sound reverb permits, or the atmospheric hints it can give.
My favorite sound right now:
- Reverse reverb (ok, it's a bit like cheating as it's a kind of delay, but the full wet shoegazy reverse reverb is incredible)
- Plate, with its striking precision, is a go-to for any reverb sound. Like when I think of a reverb, it's plate reverb.
- Reverb before the drive. The purist will eyeball for the wrong order, but I became a better person after putting the Cathedral (my main reverb unit) before my ODs. The tails are so sweetly enhanced by light overdrive or completely crushed by a high gain distortion. Every sound is better, my whole person is better.
The jams on this video are soo goood!
How about a shout out to nick’s drumming?.....he has great timing and feel........
In French, “météore” is approximately MAY-TAY-ahr. [meteɔʀ]. So like the English noun “meteor” only without the silly English sounds.
Also, those are acute accents (French) - umlauts are German.
@@Twannnng Did they say “umlaut”?? oh my god, come on. “On today’s episode…” Americans learn about other languages’ diacritics.
Your drums always sound so good.
Great episode, love the jams, particularly the last one! My favourite reverb sound is from 60's Ampeg combo amps such as Reverberocket and Gemini series. Pedal wise, I love my EHX Ocean's 11, particularly the tremolo + hall reverb sound, but a little part of me wishes it was tremolo + spring reverb.
