When cutting Sonotube, get a piece of it cut the size you need, cut a slit in it and place around tube. Draw your strait line around and keep sliding it down to draw your next line. Far more efficient than measuring all around in several places. I did the same thing my first time until someone finally suggested I stop wasting my time
It was quite literally hip-breaking work. Much respect for you guys out there doing concrete every day, I'm going to stick to turning wrenches for a living 😄
I was a brick layer for probably the same time and I was a "paid" Hod Carrier for maybe 5 years before that. I worked with my dad since I was old enough to lift a pair of tongs with about 10 bricks in them. So I have physically, mixed, pushed in a wheelbarrow and shovel God only knows how much cement and poured a foundation or driveway or two. I kind of have a love hate feeling about the mud mixer. This project is ideal and I have seen a few others and think they are great then I look at the cost $$$$$ then I think about not having it and needing a pump truck which probably is not an option here. It probably paid for itself in this situation. Great teamwork too I don't picture these two in a screaming match, pretty even keeled! lol
Loved that mixer.... Looks great, progress is a good thing for sure....Winter is coming soon, nice to have the ground work done for your cabin... Thanks for sharing Katie & Chris
The mixer is really great for taking on a project like this. It really reduces the amount of labor to do the job. It was a big relief to complete the concrete before winter set in. I think we still have a few more weeks before things start to freeze up good here. But we will continue to work on the cabin if the weather allows! I'm glad we can share our progress with everyone!
It amazes me how much you are doing for your foundation. Great job, your place will stand the test of time. So glad you are taking the steps needed. Your foundation is the start of great things to come.
A strong foundation is key! Summer is too short to be re-leveling the foundation and repairing frost damage. We want to be able to get out , adventure, and enjoy nature at that time of the year 🙂 thanks for your kind words!
Great job team. You two are amazing. Katie , you are an inspiration and a role model to all young girls out there that need direction or are lost and need a path to womanhood to see what life skills are important to know for personal growth, self development, for mental and physical strength but also for longevity, self reliance and to keep learning and challenging yourself everyday. Great vids and narrations from both.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really do believe that it is important for women to learn many of these skills. While I enjoy the more typical feminine skill set of cooking, gardening, and maintaining the home, I love learning new skills that improve our quality of life and feel that it is important for both of us to have a hand in building this life. Your kind words and support mean so much, and I hope to inspire young women out there to follow their dreams and don't fear trying new things, even if it is out of the norm for today's standards.
You guys are such hard workers. What a beautiful place you will have when your done. Talk about Blessed, your living the best lives. God Bless you both.
Awesome job. This was a lot of backbreaking work but now you have the holes concreted and ready to move on with your build. Looking forward to seeing your progress and your home building up. Loving your channel and seeing you two working so well together.
Appreciate you exacting placement of the concrete. The next step will truly show how accurate they are,but I have faith. Love those concrete mixers. Well worth the cost!
Looks amazing Guys, I bet someone won’t want to see wire again for a few minutes lol, that foundation is going to be so sound lots of support, gotta feel good 👍 your friend from willow 🙏🏻💪🇺🇸❤️
Thank you 🙂 we have a newfound respect for people building rebar structures for a living! Very hard work... we are hopeful the foundation lasts us a lifetime 🙏
Haha 😅 it is hard to tell in the video but I wore a large leather weight lifting belt. It took a lot of the strain off my back. Still made a great workout, Thanks for watching!
My wife and I are doing the same thing on our homestead in NY. It just makes me happy seeing another couple get after their dreams and putting in the hard work required. Keep it up guys!
It is a big job, but it is very rewarding to DIY as much as possible and save money! We wish you guys the best of luck in your homestead endeavors back east! Enjoy the adventure 🙂
The hardest and most time consuming part of many projects is the preparation. You guys are smashing it. Benelli seems to be a good watch dog. Warning you of the presence of the young bull moose. Thanks for the video.
Good prep work makes for a great end result 👍 Benelli is a great watch dog , he always smells the moose and alerts us before we even see them. It's great to have him outside when working because we can not always concentrate on the surrounding wildlife. Nice to know a bear is not going to surprise us 😄 we are glad you enjoyed the video!
I am in the construction industry in NZ and currently working on foundations for a large factory, so I know how hard you two are working to achieve your goals. What I have seen so far is impressive to say the least. Easy subscribe from me.
You Two work great together! I find this very interesting and amazed at how many details and steps are taken to achieve your end goal of a solid foiundation. GOOD JOB! You should be so proud!!!
Thanks for not holding onto the auger bit. Last guy I watched liked to grab the bit as it was about to drill a hole. His wife was on the tractor ready to drill. He must have missed the safety class.
Oh my! That sounds terrifying 😳 We try to take precautions to avoid tragedy or injury on all our projects. Hopfully somone let those folks know that is very dangerous.
Cut the hook section off your manual rebar wire tool, insert it into the chuck of your cordless drill and wrap the rebar faster. To save concrete and still have a big footing, drill the 18"hole and fill the bottom 10" with concrete and let cure for 4 hrs, then stick your rebar in and a 12" sonotube on top of your footing and fill. This would be strong enough for any 3 story building.
We will save the hook at the end of the two broken tools to use in a drill in the future! Our original plans did include 12 inch sonotubes with the plastic footers on the bottom. In this area, when we priced out buying 7 to 9 feet of 12 inch sonotube for each form vs. only 2 to 3 feet of 18-inch sonotube, the extra concrete was cheap enough that it was not worth it to do the extra excavation work on a 12-inch tube. If we did not have so many peirs to do, I would definitely go the route you are suggesting with not using the plastic footer forms it is more cost-effective. With not having extra people on hand , having all the 18-inch forms set and level made it really nice to go down the line pouring concrete without stopping to set up the next form. Thank you for your input and ideas 🙂
The project took longer to complete than we anticipated due to rain, we wanted to give everyone the completed project in the video instead of stretching it out 🙂 hope you enjoyed the video!
All you need to tie the rebar is a pair of channel lock pliers probably # 6 the with the hook on one grip 2 twist and your done . I was a rod buster for 9 years . In my youth it was great money back in the mid 60's but life expectancy was short most were very hard drinkers.
Wow, amazing job in dealing with that workload. You had the right tools for the situation so obviously you know what you are doing. Definitely want to get this part of the house correct. I love your channel, thanks!
If the foundations aren’t right then the rest of the job will be a nightmare so you guys did a fantastic job and everything will be much easier now, very well done

Saw the tired in your face and your body when you were doing those tubes after dark ... been there and done that. I'm 70 and you've got my respect for pushing through like you did.

Good afternoon 😊 we have a lot of small projects to complete before winter arrives, but we plan to keep pushing on with the cabin build as soon as possible, too! Thank you for the well wishes 🙏
I'm filled with admiration for you youngsters creating a life for yourselves!
Thank you! We are working hard to build our dream, we will get there eventually 🙂
Excellent job guys. That mixer is a game changer. Great team work guys. Love and be safe!🤗😘🌼🇻🇪

I am greatly impressed when i see young couples working hard to accomplished their dream! Good work and I’m subscribed.
Your lab is so precious. So many expressions on his face. You two work so well together. ❤
Thank you! He does have quite a variety of expressions 😁

40K LBS of concrete, roughly 10 yards. Good job you 2. I've been in the concrete industry for 30 years and I know how hard that work is. 👏

😂 if we were not trying to save money, we would have as well. Thanks for watching!
Proud of what you have accomplished, by your hard work! God Bless....
Thank you!
The hardest and most time consuming part of many projects is the preparation. You guys are smashing it. Benelli seems to be a good watch dog. Warning you of the presence of the young bull moose. Thanks for the video.
Totally agree. Nice to see some adequate prep, it will minimize problems later on!

Impressive! More precise than many professionals.
Great job y’all! You both have a very good work ethic and will have a home in no time at all

Thank you for the well wishes! We are glad to hear you are enjoying our videos 😃
Great job can't wait to see the building begin.
Us too! Thank you 😃
I can’t wait to see your house turn out ,your concrete mixer is so nice , I love your surroundings view , it’s so amazing, SUBSCRIBED
We are glad you are enjoying our videos 😃 alaska really does have natural beauty everywhere! Thank you for your subscription!
Lots of planning and hard work, looks awesome!
Thank you! It is great to see our plans come to fruition!
Just finished this process building a 16 x 20' screened Gazebo. Pretty rewarding seeing the posts mounted, notched ready for framing. Nice job.
Diy projects are so rewarding seeing the finished structure! Good luck with the rest of your gazebo 🙂

Happy to see y'all back 😊
The project took longer to complete than we anticipated due to rain, we wanted to give everyone the completed project in the video instead of stretching it out 🙂 hope you enjoyed the video!
All you need to tie the rebar is a pair of channel lock pliers probably # 6 the with the hook on one grip 2 twist and your done . I was a rod buster for 9 years . In my youth it was great money back in the mid 60's but life expectancy was short most were very hard drinkers.
Thank you for the tip! We have a newfound respect for that line of work! It is really hard work and deserves good pay!
Wow, amazing job in dealing with that workload. You had the right tools for the situation so obviously you know what you are doing. Definitely want to get this part of the house correct. I love your channel, thanks!
Thank you!
2 people, 2 days, 40,000 lbs of concrete, mercy🥴I just did 660 lbs and can't even get my head around 40,000 lbs😵💫
It was a big job, but the mud mixer really made it manageable ! 🙂
That mixer is unbelievable. 40k lbs. wow.
Not disagreeing that it’s a lot but you can’t get your head around a factor of 60?
Seems b.s. to me too
@GlobalDrifter1000 the mudmixer can mix a yard an hour. It took about 30 minutes to fill each piling, so it was totally doable in 2 days.
What an awesome property you have. Great job on the tubes.
Thank you! 🙂
If the foundations aren’t right then the rest of the job will be a nightmare so you guys did a fantastic job and everything will be much easier now, very well done
Thank you!
You guys will be successful for sure. You’re doing a great job. I appreciate you not having music and you communicate well. To the point without rambling on and on. I look forward to watching your videos
My favorite channel
Enjoy watching your videos.
I'm happy to hear you enjoy them 😀
the stirrups in your cages need overlap. but all together theyre not needed at all imo. in thirty plus years the only time ive seen a column crack vertically was after being hit by a car doing 60. i think ure good
Thank you for the tip! We will remember this if we have another similar project.
How exciting for you guys!!! Looking forward to seeing the cabin go up.
Thank you!
When I first saw that cement mixer on the gate episode I wasn't sold on it, but it was like having a mini cement truck for the sonotubes. It was perfect! Are you working off of prints? I mean it looks like a good strong build.
The mixer works out really nice when mixing hundreds of bags! I did draw up my own set of prints for this project. We should have included the drawings in the video... I was able to find free engineering prints online for a very similar size structure to base mine off of. I used online calculators to calculate the soil load-bearing capacity and figure out how many peirs I would need and correct spacing for my structure weight. It is really up to the builder to do this here because we have no codes to follow or inspections outside city limits in alaska. I am no engineer, but i made my best effort to build it to last many years and hold up to the frequent earthquakes and wind. Thanks for watching!
I love all the teamwork in these videos
Thanks! 🙂
You folks make a great team Best Wishes 😊
Thank you!
This is the best video and method I’ve seen used to set the concrete piers
Thanks, depending on the area there are better options. In the lower 48, the cost for screw piles is more competitive and better priced in some areas than concrete peirs. Unfortunately, here the cost was triple compared to concrete. Also if a bell auger is available some money could be saved in concrete when doing concrete piers like this. If our cabin was much bigger, I would have poured a slab. If money was unlimited, full crawlspace foundation.
Wow you have the best cement mixture out of all home builder. Nice
It is a really great tool! Makes the concrete projects a lot less daunting 😃
You know what you are doing. 👍👍👍
Thank you 🙂
Hi guys, is nice see you both working together. Good luck with your project.

Hello 👋 and thank you!
Excellent video and I love how you explain it all but didn’t over explain 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you! We really try to keep it entertaining ! Two weeks of work jammed into 30 minutes helps. 😄

Saw the tired in your face and your body when you were doing those tubes after dark ... been there and done that. I'm 70 and you've got my respect for pushing through like you did.
Yes, it was exhausting! 😴
Looking good!
Your dog is so sweet and easy going, I was wondering how his guard dog skills were, so I was really glad to see he let you know the Moose was there. Who's a good boy! He's a good boy!
He is a great watchdog, he won't even let those pesky squirrels come out of their tree 😅
Excellent job!! Especially when your partner is working along with you, that’s a plus.
Team work! Thanks 🙂
You two did a great job and make an amazing team!
Thank you so much 🙂
Nice neatly done job. Love the mixer you were using.

Very impressive! Can’t wait for next video. Great job!
Thank you 😃
Nice job! Always good to have a manual tool for tightening reebar.. see you on the next step😊
Agreed! Thank you 🙂
Glad you are including us on your build, wish I could help.[Of course you don't need an old geezer from Florida in your way]. Good job on the finished concrete job.
Thank you 😃 we are glad you are enjoying the journey with us!
That is crazy amount of work. You two are awesome
Thank you! It was a big job 🙂
Looking great. Just need more videos from you guys.
Haha, thank you! If we have entertaining content, we will be sure to post it for everyone 😃
