- Опубликовано: 16 июл 2016
- Join me for a quick review of a vintage Rolex GMT Master II 16710 L-Serial from 1989. Designed for Pan AM airlines and loved by pilots around the world. The GMT Master II is indeed a special pilot watch. The 3185 movement is a reliable and accurate powerhouse and its GMT function is a both a thoughtful and useful complication.

I bought this same model about 20 years ago from a Rolex dealer pre-owned for $2K. I'm amazed how much the value has risen in recent years. My folks gave me a fair amount of grief at the time because I was in my 20's and they thought it was a huge extravagance. Only trouble it's ever given me was a few years back when it got hit with a racquetball and knocked something inside loose. Fairly expense repair.
no u didnt
I saw an older man at Starbucks wearing one, I complimented him on it. He then ask me do I like it? I said……I wish but as for now my pocket wouldn’t let me. He gave me a look and told me …..if you really like it that much I will offer you it for 3k so you can carry on the watch. I took the opportunity on the spot, took it to the jeweler and got it verified and now a proud owner of a GMT COKE 🙏🏼
Cap
That's my watch Anthony from 1998. Love it and will never sell. Speaking of which I am glad you are starting to buy Rolex again, just saw your video when you sold and I went like WTF ?! Nice vids.
After a long search I finally pulled the trigger on a 16710 with a pepsi bezel y serial. There is a charm on these 5 digit watches that is just lost on the modern lineup. The bracelet on mine feels light and slightly fragile but it gives it more charm! I love your GMT and I love mine as well! enjoy in good health
The Coke is better looking than the Pepsi.
here here!
I think these watches are ugly,
dont have art on them,
people like them becasue of the logo nothing more....
hell no the Pepsi one look hella better
Ditto- 1986 "Fat Lady/Sophia Loren" Coke! #942801, 18k SS Datejust 1977- personal preference
LOrd of bEES then why are we discussing which model we like best?
A gorgeous watch that I'm envious of. A great video. Congratulations!
However, as The greatest Rolex pilot watch ever, I beg to differ. I'm a former military pilot and a current commercial airline pilot. This Rolex GMT Master II is a good pilot's watch but not the BEST for a pilot.
A true pilot's watch has three basic requirements; 1) accurate, 2) easily readable in low light, and 3) a stopwatch. Date and GMT functions are nice but secondary. My personal work watch is an Omega Planet Ocean Chronograph (3 dial).
I wish I had this watch to add to my collection. It's a great vintage piece.
Thanks Conrad, I really appreciate the insight. I'm also jealous you get to fly commercial airplanes. I'd love to get a chance to fly a 707, L-1011, DC-10 or 747 or any current commercial plane. The Plant Ocean is a really cool piece.
Hello,
I have to disagree..
I fly very long haul flights and the GMT is perfect in my opinion.
I don't need a chronograph in the cockpit, but I need a GMT function for jet lag, and a robust watch with which I can jump in the swimming pool waiting for the next flight
Conrad W I appreciate your service. It maybe different at your company, but my airlines sop stipulates you cannot use anything besides the jets chronograph for timing. So having a chronograph for a watch function is actually useless. Instead a date, legibility, and a gmt reference is preferred. Cheers
yeah even though I wear a breitling still much rather use the chronograph on my PFD as it’s in my field of scan.
Why not a Speedmaster?
Very good review and it looks in good condition for a 28-year-old watch. Was it more or less than either the standard black. Ceramic 116710LNor BLNR? What is the time keeping like?
Nice, thanks for posting. Love that model. Rather have it than the new one.
+camaro Carl thanks for watching!
Thanks for the shout out and awesome job on the video. Glad I could help!
I really appreciate all of your help Dan. The new camera is wonderful.
saw several models of this coke bezel model today. All pre owned obviously but absolutely stunning. seriously tempted.
Good choice to me, bought it since 1997. It works well never been sicked.
That video and audio quality has shot through the roof compared to your earlier videos. I have not seen someone improve their video and audio quality so quickly. Keep going at this rate and it may lead to world domination.
Haha, thanks. I really appreciate that.
1991 Coke bezel and 1998 Pepsi here. Absolutely the ultimate travel watch. More useful than a chronograph (Daytona) and watertight rating close enough to a dive watch (Submariner/Sea Dweller)
Just received my P-Serial 16710 Coke SEL in the mail today! I'm just in love with this watch :D
Congrats, you will continue to love it.
I am nearly ready to step up and buy a Rolex. The immediate thought and one I'm close to doing is a new Submariner non date. However I find I absolutely love this GMT Coke and cannot stop looking at them on ebay etc. A tad more expensive than a new Sub but... However can you explain the absence of rehaut engraving on this model? Was it not done on any Rolex until after this period?
I’m fortunate enough to have a 16710 SEL AND a Submariner 14060M. Love them both
Great vid..I've got a 16710 that originally had the black bezel, switched to Pepsi mode and haven't looked back since!
Nice upgrade, the black needs a bit more personality. You made a great decision. I love the Pepsi as well.
Just bought a 2000 Rolex Pepsi GMT 16710! Bezel doesn’t click in either direction is there an internal problem ? Or is it normal for 2000 models?
wow I was just thinking about this model and then you posted a video on it the next moment :)
I'm trying to get better at reading minds =)
Dream watch and great vid
With the aluminum bezel you can pop in a black one or a pepsi bezel fairly easy also. but they sell for about 200 dollars a piece.
Yeah, that occurred to me as I was originally looking for a Pepsi however the cost turned me off.
£55, St James's Square Rolex, inc havng the AD fit it and the little Rolex tin that the bezel comes in - you keep the old one ofc. If someone is asking 200, they're ripping you off.
What is the fair price for vintage rolex gmt II full set?
Hadi Ali Fageeh if you are looking for a 2005-2006 coke GMT 2 with all papers and maintenance certificates, $8k nothing less
Hadi Ali Fageeh what year did you buy this watch? Does it have papers, has it ever been serviced if so was it just maintenance and a lube job or did something brake? Hopefully you never had the watch polished as that is the one thing that most often devalues the watch as a whole.
Let me know what series the watch is. I own a Coke dial GMT- D series manufactured sometime in 2005. My watch has never been polished; all box, books, card, letter of service from Rolex to authenticate service back in 2017. My offers to buy my watch are up around $10.8 immediate cash but so far i wont sell. Most people cannot believe the age of the watch until they see the papers. I even have the rolex seals that are glued to the watch to cover the face along with the green leather box and the tags of the original price on my watch. Of course you could get sell a watch without papers but you will not get top dollar for it.
Great review. I picked up a 2003 pepsi last month. Great watch!
Congrats on the Pepsi! Thanks for watching.
J Anthony, I still love this watch and this video. Is any GMT Coke bezel with a 16710 considered a ‘Pan Am’ GMT, or is there something else that makes it a ‘Pan Am’?
Conrad W i believe you are talking about the very first edition of Rolex GMT series 6542 with the white face otherwise known as albino Rolex. Those were built and manufactured for PanAm pilots who at the time were flying across multiple time zones. I never seen one, only in pictures but it is a very unique and rare mode.
thats a really nice watch, interesting video , thank you.
Dream watch.
how price please
Not sure how this guy scratched his bracelet so bad. I wear my Coke GMT2 2005 and my watch looks brand new. I love my watch! Would never let the scratches happen.
e guy who scratched it. Im so sorry. have an exceptional day
beautiful, versatile and hope very accurate. congrats for owning such a beauty. cheers.
Thank you Ana.
Great ❤
great quality, well done
Thanks Grant.
Bar none..this is the Rolex Icon that people associate with the brand...excellent..sexy..savvy
Why do you wear your watch on your right hand?
I'm left handed and it is more comfortable that way.
I heard the same.
Because he is a child of Satan
Would love if someone can explain to me D-series means for the coke? Would love to acquire but not sure what it means. Thanks 🙏🏻
D series certificates it was manufactured sometime in 2005. I own a GMT II Coke bezel 16710, which was purchased on 5/2006. This watch was purchased for $4,400 USD at a NYC gray dealer. As you already know this watch model 16710 coke has sky rocketed in value used models well taken care of can go for well over $12,400 USD some even higher. I had my watch serviced at Rolex of NYC at Rolex building on 11/2017. Seals were changed, the watch was tested for waterproof, crown and gears were oiled and sealed to bring watch to original specs. I have to say my unit came back looking brand new and performing just as when i got it back in 2006. It is an extremely comfortable watch, perfect diameter and not overweight for the wrist. My watch came will all the paperwork from dealer and now that i had it serviced, Rolex provided a letter of authenticity with my watch along with a description of the work performed. The cost of the work done by Rolex of NY cost $860. Took 4 weeks to get the watch serviced. I did a lot of research when i bought this watch and it came down to the coke or pepsi dial. I truly love my watch. I have other watches is my collection bit this is my favorite piece.
Do you have all your paper work?
Daniel Melendez no, I was about to buy this one but a bit hesitant - anyway thanks for the information.
Daniel Melendez did the Rolex NY sent out to Swiss for servicing or they done it locally?
I assume this watch came with Pepsi and Coke dial?
C P what year did the seller tell you the watch was? Did it have papers, any maintenance done as i assume by now the watch would have had to be service at least one time in its 16 year life span.
beautiful watch im buying one from my uncle 1989 model
Nice vid! Please show us the watch lume next time ;)
+Amintas Neto Sorry about that, it is old and the lume has become pretty poor.
Great watch. Did you pick it up on a forum (lionseek or eBay, etc)...
Bought it from a watch wholesaler based out of Los Angeles.
Now, that is a video! :) The forum price for the Coke, Pepsi, Batman is ridiculous.
Oh, I haven't looked. What are they going for? I would make a video about it except I hesitate to tell people where I buy watches in case they have a bad experience.
Completely understand. I have been looking at Lionseek which has a watch section. Two Batman watches: Rolex Gmt Master 116710 Blue Black bezel $8500, Rolex GMT II Ceramic Bezel model 116710BLNR. $$8450.
Wow, I was offered a Batman for $7300. Seems I should have bought it.
Just discovered the channel. Awesome. Subscribed.
Thank you my friend!
Are the Rolex GMT Master II 16710 "Coke" and "Pepsi" the same watch?
same watch different bezel
Love the coke dial
Bezel
Adam15197 haha , absolutely. I'm am idiot .
+Simon Crane I knew what you meant =). Cheers
Isn't the original Pan-Am the "Pepsi" bezel?
Ted Barrera Yes.
Hey J. You look and sound great. Good job on the video.
Thank you!!!!
no second hand?
wlexxx you are blinded
doesn't rolex polish your watch when It gets serviced
Exactly.
I've been putting off watching this because as you know I'm looking at GMT's and I just don't have Rolex money :( Looks the biz. Damn man. It's a cool watch. Way overpriced but cool. The search continues. Also, your sound quality is usually better, it's a bit quieter on this video. Did you do something different?
Hey Brasco, a fellow RUclipsr shot this video for me with his professional mic setup. As I use a cheaper setup I am very happy to hear you prefer my terrible equipment =). As for the watch... I agree, it is crazy overpriced. My SRP307J1 is every bit as nice. Most people would never believe that. Sadly, the Rolex will continue to appreciate and the Seiko likely won't. Don't feel bad about not having a Rolex, you don't need crazy money to have an awesome watch. Any of the watches we talked about look appealing?
Orient is looking strong... but the more I learn the less I understand... seems there are many ways to do GMT, unfortunately the best and most sensible seems to cost about the same as a second hand Lexus :/ (at least it doesn't depreciate like one)... haven't quite got my head around watches as an investment... but considering how often I'd need a GMT maybe it would be good as an investment piece... I knew I shouldn't have watched this video! Arrgh! When you have a SARB03X and a SRP30XJ1 it's hard to justify pretty much anything else it seems lol
As for the sound... well you can check that for yourself. Might be my set up, ears etc
Indeed. The irony that I sold off some Rolex's and bought a used Lexus with some of the proceeds. I'm guessing you knew that. I wouldn't look at a Rolex as an investment. They tend to hold their value but you can invest your money in better places. Let me know if you make a purchase, I'd be curious as to what watch you buy.
J. ANTHONY
Casio 106 is just as good.
keep telling that to yourself
yukosaturno hahahaah 😂
Lug holes beep
Greatest rolex pilot watch? Not many options there brother...
I was thinking of the Air King and the many Pilots I know that use either an Explorer I or II for flying.
What with the tribal music.
I'm just curious as to why you sold your Rolexes and are still reviewing them. This is not a vindictive post whatsoever. I've just never owned a Rolex but want one, and was curious if there was indeed a Rolex bug and whether or not it was one of those brands that keeps people coming back no matter how hard they try to shake it.
Hey Eric,
That is a completely fair question to ask. I actually anticipated it and made a video on it. Hopefully this answers the question. ruclips.net/video/y4w0wc5REMc/видео.html
The greatest Rolex pilot watch? No, i'm afraid the new Air King for 2016 takes it. It is designed to be THE greatest pilot watch of all time.
I'm not a fan of it but I know I am a minority in that regard. I know a lot of people are really excited about it.
J. ANTHONY It's such a radical departure from the typical Rolex offerings that even though the dial on the new Airking is terribly laid out I find it strangely attractive somehow.
I can understand that. Any watch you buy because it speaks to you was purchased for the right reason.
J. ANTHONY i've changed my mind, the GMT Master is the greatest pilot watch, the new Airking is shit lol
gmshadowtraders haha, the new Airking is certainly a polarizing watch.
