The GMT watch complication has been around for over 50 years thanks to Pan American Airlines and Rolex. And 50 years later the GMT complication still serves a purpose. In this video we show you how to use a GMT watch.

I’ve been a pilot for 51 years and didn’t know I could use my Rolex as a compass. Never too old to learn I guess. Thank you.
Billy, you can also do this with any watch. I learned this in Boy Scouts.
Point the hour hand at the sun. Bisect the smaller of the two angles created by the hour hand and the 12 marker. (One will be less than 180 degrees, the other greater than.) The bisecting line of the smaller angle is pointing South. North is in the opposite direction. So, say your watch reads 4:00. Point the hour hand at the sun. The angle created between the 12 and the 4 is bisected at 2 by a line that points South. Directionally opposite this line is North. In this case it would over the 8.
Watch the video again. When he shows the dial with the GMT hand facing North. The line created by the GMT hand bisects the dial on the other side between 5 and 12. This points South.
Pretty neat.
Jonathan Burns Nice one Jonathan. Thanks.
@@nojburns great to learn about. Thank you
you prolly dont care but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account??

I will need to replay this a few times omg thank you
I've got it on auto replay!!
It's not you, this explanation is as clear as mud... he skips the basics.

I'm still confused...
Thank you.I’ve been using this watch for several years. And,by far.Is the best and complete explanation of all times,I’ve ever listened.
I have never been so confused and impressed at the same time lol! I'll watch the video again if I have to but I wanna learn this system. So awesome :D
Haha! Thanks Mr. Beev. Let us know if you have any specific questions. We'd love to help
@@CrownandCaliber When using the GMT for 3 time zones, I get that the hour hand points to local time, GMT hand points to time #2, but is it just up to you to add 8 to zone #2 to get to GMT time? Do you just have to have that memorized, as there is nothing (in your example) pointing to 2200?
@@davidepperson2376 This! My exact question.
You are confused, coz this tutotial makes no sense..it is incorrect.
@@davidepperson2376 This tutorial is incorrect..
It always amazes me how much beauty and precision are added to the parts of amzwatch's watch 99% of people will never see.
I never knew this but always loved the Pepsi bezel and tracking a second time zone but I didn’t know you could track 3 zones and use it as a compass. That’s really is incredible considering it was created so long ago. If you don’t have access to a smart phone for some reason or get lost in the woods you can use that watch to find north and get home. Amazing.
This is one of the most beautiful watches I've seen.
You haven't seen enough
@Desiigner Wait theres a gmt watch for 40€ can you tell me which one pls, want like a 24 click bezel.
@Desiigner i think ill wait for more Pagani Design gmt reviews and ill consider one.
@Desiigner Oh yeah,I like his channel aswell,he confirmed on Instagram that he ordered a pagani design gmt,I'm waiting for the comparison between the pagani and parnis gmts.
@Desiigner yeah,I'm 14 so I'm currently looking at some good beater watches that's not way out of my budget.
who else came here after buying a GMT to figure out how to set the time correctly ?
By setting the whole watch to local time It has double use, compass & am/pm indicator. Thats Badass! Great Video
I've been a pilot since 1972, and worn a GMT 16750 (two time zones) since 1983. My go to international GMT for my last years as a 777 pilot flying LAX, HKG and LHR was a Glycine Airman Base 22 as once set, it gave THREE concurrent time zones without having to rotate the bezel. So for me, this was better than upgrading to the GMT Master II. Plus the Airman is just as iconic (more affordable and accurate) as the Rolex.
This video is very informative even though I’ve forgotten how to use it already.
I feel like it will only work if you set the time to San Francisco ;)
I'm glad I'm able to rewind and pause this video.
Proud owner of a Batman. love it. Thanks for the recap, as said mobile destroys all the fun and style.
How is it 3 separate time zones when you've moved the bezel to display 3rd the time? Now the bezel has moved to displaying the 3rd time, the 2nd time is now gone >.<
* If you imagine some more hands.... you've got a fourth time zone displayed.. :/
Great tutorial. I had no idea you could use it as a compass! This makes the GMT complication actually quite useful. Thanks!
GMT not necessary for compass....any normal analog watch works for this too.
The one and only video that explains clearly the GMT functions!
I never had an issue doing the timezone math in my head, but I still love how simple the GMT complication is, yet it adds something nice to the visual of the watch overall.
What does it say about me that I still don't know how to use a GMT-Master II? I feel like I would just use mine as an "Egg timer."
That's funny and most expensive timer ever...you look good watching time
agree, confuse , sorry not helpful.
I think they didn't explain it well enough. you have 3 sets of adjustment. main clock, 24 hour hand and the ring. you can set them to whatever time zone you like
Lol! How is it 3 separate time zones when you've moved the bezel to display 3rd the time? Now you've got the bezel displaying the 3rd time and the 2nd time is now gone >.<

@@benjaminsavage4204 The hour hand shows your local time, the GMT hand shows GMT on the dial and your third timezone on the bezel.
Best video I've seen explaining the GMTII functions. Never knew it was a compass too.
Concise and clear! Thanks
Excellent video; both comprehensive and concise. Thank you.
I concluded by myself that you could likely see 3 time zones due to bezel and 2nd “arrow” hand. This confirmed it. Thank you so much.
Glad it helped Javier!
Thank you for the videos !
You have done so easy what others have a hard time with you made it easy peasy thanks 🙏🏼
Thanks for this. My Rootbeer is due in December. Now I can do more than just admire its looks!
I need another video explaining this one.
Great informative video. Thanks. The rolex gmt is my fav, although I'm starting to fall for A Panerai GMT but seems a little to complicated.
I am watching this video in northern Alabama in August at 1700 CST. So your example worked perfectly for me.
I use this watch as a compass mostly. Good to know it tells time :)
When he was demonstrating how to set for three time zones. Did anyone notice when he said to set the GMT to 2200. But he set it to 2300? Or did I miss something?
Thought the same thing! Must be a mistake right?
Yes he messed that up. Cheers.
Thank you soooo much. I thought I was an idiot because I couldn't figure out where he got the 2200 from🤣
I rewatched that part like 10 times
No, it’s not a mistake. The GMT hand is pointing to 2200 on the 24-hour scale per the bezel. It moves at half the speed of the hour hand, so it actually takes 24 hours to make one full trip around the dial instead of 12 hours for a normal hour hand. Thus, by pointing it at the 11 marker per the dial, it’s actually two hours away from midnight instead of one because it takes twice as long to get there.
@@HankTheTank23but in the last example he set the GMT hand to 2300, hence people’s confusion
@ 04:11 how do you see the GMT = 22:00? It’s so confusing as the the 22 on the bezel aligns with 11 (23) on the dial instead of 10 (22)
tha's because the GMT hand moves on a 24hr basis, so 11 o'clock indicates 10pm, and 11:30 indicates 11pm. But i agree with you that, once you move the bezel, it becomes difficult to read it that way.
Best explanation until now! Thanks for you video!
Finally a video that explains it perfectly
This is great. Just picked up my 1st gmt, a TAG aquaracer
This solved my question with how to work my Omega GMT. other videos were confusing
This is the best video I've seen on GMT and Compass feature. Well done!
For people without a GMT watch, you can still use your time-only watch as compass: Just adjust yourself so the hour hand points towards the sun and the imaginary middle line between the hour hand and your twelve hour mark is the north-south line with south towards the sun after noon and the opposite before. During summer / day light savings - use 1pm instead.
I learned that in the Boy Scouts. A sun dial works on the same principle: The Sun casts a shadow from the center of the dial that points directly away from the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere the Sun is due south of you at noon; so the shadow points due north (the "twelve o'clock" position).
I dont understand. If you can see where the sun is basically you can tell where N is.
True and correct information at a glans 🙏
i just tested the compas function with my explorer 2
it actually works
NIIICE
Great details
Great video, thanks. The GMT function however was introduced by Longines 20 years earlier than Rolex.
Wow! Compass too? Didn’t know that one. Thanks!!
Good information. Thank you
love these
Very informative video and the compass hack is amazing! Where did you learn it as it’s not mentioned on Rolex material
This explained it the best. Thanks
Super helpful.b the first Rolex I bought was the one used in your tutorial 😊 thanks !
That's awesome!
Thanks for your information
Did he make a mistake in setting the GMT time for the 3 time zones? He set the GMT hand to 23:00 but said the GMT time was 22:00.
Confused me also, going by the the bezel it says 2200 but 2300 on the face
GMT watch scale is 24 hrs. That means 11:00 on scale is 10 pm, 11:30 is 11 pm, 12 is 12 pm
Great! Think I’ll buy one!
Oh men this video help me a lot, thanks👍👍👌👌
The first time i watched it, was 2 years ago I didn't understand a thing..... But now I got everything ♥️

Hey, I'm getting ready to do a review of the new Citizen Promaster GMT BJ7128-59E and am going to point my subscribers to your video. It's the best explanation of how to use a GMT watch out there. Kudos!
Hey Maverick,
Thanks!
I guess I’m dyslexic. This makes no sense at all to me.
Me neither, when talking about 22:00 hours, Im sure the watch GMT hand was at 23:00 hrs. Maybe its me ??
Just got the left hand sprite … this helps a ton
I learned today.
I'm on my dealer's waiting list for one.
Question: If I set the GMT hand to +5hrs local time ie. EDST presently, will the watches hour hand maintain that +5hr differential as it operates.
I know this might seem to be a silly question but I'm rather new to the GMT Masters.
Thanks
Omg a compass!!! Thanks!
I love setting my GMT hand to GMT and then using the bezel to change time zones
That is the professional's way of using it.
In the age of cloud-based architectures, software engineers deal with machines running in almost every timezone. Immediately knowing the time in UTC during an impactful event has become immensely handy. Thats what brought me to this video.
Should this watch be named "UTC Master"?
Thank you for your explanation and good video with lot of varient shots closeups. I hope your channel grows more .
That's stuff I didn't know...thanks
You're welcome! We are glad you enjoyed it.
Small info correction, there are approximately 38 time zones. Not 24.
Some countries use a half hour intervals (Like India’s +5:30 hours, or Nepal +5:45). Adding up these national differences worldwide it comes to around 38 time zones, but this does change occasionally.
~ You also had the GMT hand set to 2300 whilst declaring 2200, but good video description nevertheless.
Hey BlueLineSpeed,
You're absolutely correct. They're constantly adding the half-hour and even quarter-hour timezones. When we last looked we believe there are 40 timezones. We actually have a video coming out soon where we look at the Vacheron Patrimony Traditionnelle World, which manages to time 37, based on how many existed in 2015.
In regards to the GMT hand, this is what we're referencing - A lot of people get this confused because they look at the GMT in reference to the dial, which is based on the 12 hour scale thus the 12 hour markers. When in reality it should be measured in reference to the 24 hour bezel, which is correctly set to 22:00. We hope this clears up any confusion and thanks for watching!
@@CrownandCaliber how could you read the gmt time 22.00 in the 3 time zone section? The GMT marker point at 14.00 and the hour marker is at 5pm. Clarification would be great.. thanks in advance..
1:35 in fact GMR-master II did not entirely replace the GMT-master which was still made as 16700 untill 1999 !
@@anmara4071 hahah that’s very confusing and I also comment the same but Nathan (Crown and Caliber’s one, not me) is right. You actually have to imagine the 24h bezel in its native position to read the GMT hand time correctly. 🤯 🤓🥳 hahah
@@anmara4071 I know this is old, but you set it to GMT +0 (London time) ideally and read it by it's general position. It sweeps around the clock once every 24H (rather than 12), so if it was at 6 o'clock, that'd be 12:00 (midday). Every half hour increment is an hour to the GMT hand. So if it points to 11, it's 22:00, 11:30 is 23:00 and 12 is back to 00:00. That tells you what time it is in GMT +0.
When you rotate the bezel in increments that match a second time zone (eg GMT -5), the GMT hand points to the second time zone on the bezel. So GMT +0 using the watch dial, GMT -5 references the bezel. Technically you could set the GMT hand to any time zone, then the bezel is relative of that (+/- the hours difference), but you'd always have to remember what the GMT hand was set to.
The normal watch hands are always set to local time.
So if you pause at 4:16, it explains. 17:00 local time because of the normal hands (only real way to tell AM/PM is to use the GMT position and understand the offset). GMT +0 is 22:00 because it points to 11 on the watch dial. 14:00 in SF is the GMT hand pointing to the rotated bezel, which is offset GMT -8.
For the 3 different hours. The GMT time, will it always be at the number 3 position(date window)?
Nice video, you didn't mention the date, some people say you cant have a GMT watch without one. Can you please speak to this?
This is nutty.
That is a genius invention
dont I just love watching videos about things I can't ever afford?
Very interesting watch. Great video 👍
Rolex GMT2 Batman owner and very happy with Performance and functionality
I've had my gmt for 21 yeas and never knew about the compass feature.. cool
3:28 This is how I've been wearing my GMT watch. The GMT hand is always showing the current GMT time. Much more practical this way.
Thanks for the video! Correct me if I am wrong. Should you be winding the crown towards you to move the time forward on a GMT?
Hey Coburn,
It depends on the movement. The older Rolex 3185 caliber was a clockwise setting design, where the new 32XX series caliber, specifically the 3285, is a counter-clockwise setting design. Thanks for watching!
I have 2001 stainless steel model. I love it
Solid choice.
yea I wouldn't say you can easily track 3 time zones with this. Even the official Rolex website says it's for tracking 2. And if the third one is just GMT time that's not very helpful either, more like 2.5 time zones.
How to use it as a compass on the sothern hemisphere?
Possible dumb question: when you want to track 3 time zones, does one of those time zones have to be Greenwich Mean Time (aka GMT)?
So if it is 10:30 US Central time (GMT -5) and I want to monitor the time in San Paulo, Brazil (GMT -3) and Moscow (GMT +3), I could set my local time to 10:30, set the red hand to San Paulo time 00:30, and then turn the bezel counter clockwise 6 hours, 06:30. Am I right?
How do you read for x hour and 30 min differences as some time zones in asia and US are usually
Nice watch, good video. Agree with the EST is GMT-5 comment. I disagree when you say you can “see” three time zones at once. You can see two then rotate the bezel for a third. (Which you could rotate again for a 4th and on and on. ). Instead of rotating 1,2,3, and saying yes it’s now 1400 (when it was 1700), you could also say 17 minus 3 is 14. (In your head). And yes I can do 0200 minus 3 is 2300. But I only “see” two times displayed at any one time. Pizza timer without alarm is also useful.
This is definitely an advanced way to use a GMT, and only works with a true independent hour hand. Since a GMT hand makes one revolution in 24 hours (think Military time) the bezel is really just a convenience in knowing the time it represents. With practice one can read the GMT hand regardless of the bezel’s orientation. If you were to cover up the bezel in our example at 4:18, the GMT hand is still reading 10:00 pm. Bringing the bezel back into play can allow you to measure two separate time zones with just the GMT hand. Then you add in the independent hour hand for the 3rd time zone. So that’s where the added complexity and practice comes into play.
Thanks for watching!
... or simply add/subtract. I have been in multiple time zones, a fair amount. It still baffles me why someone would require this (quite simple) complication. But thanks for the thorough explanation.
I guess we could ask the same thing about the date, time keeping in general, or the compass. We could simply look at our phones for all of this information. Why have a date complication? It is ease of use, i guess. all of this in one piece of art that we know will last the test of time... it's pretty awesome.
I have a $62 Parnis GMT Auto w/ a root beer bezel, and I couldn't be happier with it. Crazy dollar value in that watch.
I’m partial to my Citizen Nighthawk. It’s not a traditional GMT (compass hack GONE), but it has a vibe all its own. And I don’t care what the snobs say, SLIDE RULES ROCK!
I have one too but my vision isn’t what it was 10 years ago when I purchased it - which is why I’m hoping to get the Rolex Explorer II before Xmas!! Come on AD!! In the meantime, I’ve got an Oris Aquis GMT that does the trick for when I travel….
I love my Squale Tropic GMT!
so what if you knock the watch against lets say your luggage while lifting it into the overhead compartment? it will just rotate your bezel out of synch. although I never used a watch like this so what do I know.
My favorite sports watch is GMT Master II Pepsi and have one. 🤩
It's good to reward ourselves sometimes . While I'm not one to spend on high-end watch (I spend too much money on travel, lol), I can appreciate your gorgeous and timeless watch. I love how it's a symbol of all your hard work. And i choose nkuwan every time honestly
24 hour analogue watch or military watch, do Rolex has a watch with main 24 hour dial?
Thanks
I have small collection of watches, not expensive or luxury watches, but each and every watch is based on different technologies. 2 watches from Timex Intelligent series, not expensive but loaded with technology, one with linear chronograph and one with perpetual calendar which is programmed up to 2060. I'm quite interested in GMT watches, my next purchase will be that one, most possibly the Seiko.
Thanks for the video, it was fun to know the complexity of GMT.
My current watch is an Invicta with a red and blue bezel, but no GMT hand. I would love a GMT and especially this Rolex.
Well done.
Well, how do you keep track on half hour or even 45 min time zones ? 🤔
My favorite GMT watch is the Mido Ocean Star with blue dial.🤟🏼🤪
