@@marstvredplanet9491 i think the easy way to understand how mechanical watch work is: power + wheels + a middle controlling system. Everything else is just detail😂
The slow-motion of the hairspring looked like it was breathing. And just like us, a watch is like heartbeats. Your videos are interesting, pristine, and relaxing.
Outstanding! I think I learned more about how a watch works in this five-minute video than probably from an instruction manual. Can't wait for your next restoration!
After watching this video, I decided to test my new-found knowledge, so I took apart an old wind-up wristwatch I had. But when I put it all back together again, I had several extra parts left over, and my watch still isn't working.
@@birdsgrove Pretty sure this commenter did not say that this video explained how it works. It was only stated that he/she knows how movements work, after hundreds of hours watching movement restoration.
The pallet fork shown at 3:04 stops the watch from unwinding because it engages with the escape wheel. The balance wheel which has a spring that makes it oscillate back and forth has a gear on its stem which pushes the pallet fork back and forth which allows the watch to unwind and the escape wheel to move in a controlled way. In doing this, the energy from the main spring is also transmitted back to the pallet fork which keeps the balance wheel moving.
I love watching shows like this, initially I was put off by no commentary, but sometimes it's just nice to watch a craftsman at working in silence in a world that is all noise all the time, thank you.
This is a *very* good explainer, because you show not only the assembly but also what effect each component practically has. Imo the *best* "how a watch works" video out there. A followup with self-winding and chrono modules would ofc be great; though I appreciate that those might be more difficult to demonstrate. Random thought... It would be nice to have a movement like this (whether by ETA or a custom modification) where the back plates were transparent (e.g. milled sapphire); as is they cover up so much of the watch mechanisms...
Possibly the best video on watch mechanicals out there. Can hardly understand why some charlatan watchmakers make such a big deal of their profession. Fortunately, I have experienced some 'old school' watchmakers who love what they do and their results are amazing.
When I was a teenager, my Dad’s best friend had a watch repair shop. In the summer of 1980 I started working there as an assistance. Learned how to clean and polish the watches. He gave me an older Hamilton watch to work on and was my project to repair it and make run. It was challenging at first. Finally got the watch running and with a new brown leather wrist band it was beautiful piece of machinery. Had it for years and unfortunately our house got broken in couple years ago and the watch was stolen 🥺 My Dad’s friend has passed away since then and till this day, I still fix my own watches including the wifey’s. I would of continue this career path. Back then I was into sports and weight training and my hands were to rough for this line of work. Almost need a surgeons hands to handle those intricate pieces of gears. Great video by the way and brought so many memories 😁
What an awesome lesson on the inner workings of a basic watch. It will no doubt still be a few weeks before I am ready to take on a Rolex, but at least I know what a pallet fork does now. Thank you so much.
I’ve always been fascinated by watches. To understand how they work and the skill required to make them work never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for such an informative video.
Another incredible view into human engineering. The mechanical watch. Humans developed a way to measure time on earth and then constructed a device like this completely void of electricity to monitor time with absolute precision. Simply amazing.
I love all of your videos, but this one Is the best one so far. Always got lost when I saw you put back together the watch but this changes everything. Great work 🙌🏽
I wear a vintage Imperial "25 Jewel" watch that has a 17 jewel movement, manual, I always just knew they had gears in them but never knew how they worked in order, this video taught me a lot about my watch and how the layers and different parts qork together to make a watch work.
Wow, I have even more love for mechanical watches than I did before. Such precise craftsmanship, such an amazing piece of tech! Lovely video, simple and easy to understand.
Clearly shown just what is needed to be shown.. loved the video. Finally the question of how watch hands precisely rotate just enough to turn a sec is answered.
Amazing job, I've been watching a lot of watch repair videos and I didn't get how a watch work until I saw this video 👏 bravo. Thank you for your effort and great display
this is fascinating! To see all of the different mechanisms working together in such a small but life changing device, and to think of the person who invented the first watch. Phew! Incredible! thanks for sharing!
What a great video with so beautiful music! It truly depicts the love of watchmaking by its creator. Simplicity and percision. Thank you for sharing again with us this love! Cheers!
Excellent video showing the precision machining required to keep the delicate interconnected parts in perfect sync and harmony . A horological work of art that amazes with its reliability and beauty. RDR , myself and other viewers would like to hear you rank watch brands from best to worst in terms of actual quality . The snobbery that is an unfortunate part of the luxury watch world makes an impartial appraisal difficult for investment and enjoyment.
A precisely five minute video, like the precision clockwork you work with.
Yes truly
Its 5 minutes and 1 second

@Tom R I do believe that videos are one second longer on a computer. On the RUclips app it's 5:00
Not really
Just a small wrist watch, but an engineering masterpiece in itself.
This is a clear and beautiful explanation. Even though I've seen it all go together, it still seems like magic that it all works so perfectly.
Obrigado pela consideração
Yes beatiful indeed but still pretty close to zero understanding ...i guess is just me ( and you maybe )

Quite a few manufacturers do this already, especially more modern watches, less so on vintage. It looks awesome.
Orient does this on their newer watches

Short, to the point, but incredibly good. I find it really cool that the movement is kept in black.
I’m thinking that this is a movement made expressively for instructional purposes. Not an actual watch.

There’s a uniquely organic beauty about mechanical engineering, whether it’s watches or engines, which you just don’t get with electronics etc.
