TISSOT | Powermatic 80 COSC Silicium - How does a mechanical movement work ?

- Tissot presents a tutorial 3D film which explains the basics of a mechanical movement with a focus on the benefits of the Silicon balance spring.
Mechanical watches are the real engineering products. The precision engineering of these tiny components which work together for decades astonishes me. Salutation to the the watch makers who combine art with their engineering skills.
The description is simplified as well as a common man can understand it's mechanical functions very well. Thank you so much ! Continue.
My favourite since the 60's. Nice to see something new & exciting like the kid staring into the showcase !
I am amazed at the fantastic variety of balance wheels in different Swiss watches!
Tissot Chemin des Tourelles Automatic 80 owner here...👌👍
Own it for three years now and still in love with it!
Best watch I've ever owned and better than my other Omega and Maurice Lacroix watches.
Hello @Bob, We are very appreciative of your comment and thank you for it. Should you need some advice or specific information, you are more than welcome to write to us! Have a great day, Your Tissot Team
Which model of Chemin do you own? There are so many that we can consider them different watches. I just ordered a skeleton one with 25 jewels which is a newest release not yet advertised nor reviewed on yt. I expect it to be a watch for generations. In the beginning I chose the black one but then I thought that a watch just ought to be shiny so I bought the ivory one.
Funny you should say that, but my Tissot Gentleman with this movement keeps much better time than my '06 Submariner. The quality overall is very close, and the maintenance costs much less. Tissot are a cracking brand. Just goes to show the level of mark up on the 'prestige' segment.
@Tissot Can you consider a heritage remake of the 'aquasport' or Roger Moore's PR16 that featured in Live and Let Die?
Got my first Tissot yesterday. Ballade Powermatic 80 COSC. While I was at the store, another caught my eye - Gentleman Powermatic 80. I'll be back for that one soon.
How's it running now movement wise
I have just bought new Seastar 1000 on rubber strap. Watch is amazing. This power reserve is do handy.
Five years later, and this is still superb - breathtaking engineering
After watching this, I never go back to quartz.. this is art 🎨, I have the Seiko 5 Automatic (not a luxury watch ⌚) but I still love it
Sekio 5 are good watches for the money! I want the black face feild version
For the money the Seiko 5 takes some beating, the only real problem is the lack of sapphire crystal ,the mineral glass scratches very easily
@@philspencelayh5464 It,s true, they have some sapphire crystal but only on high-end models like Pressage, Astron etc, but still very reliable brand watch ⌚, I trust them!
I have found someone on ebay selling sapphire crystals pretty cheaply, I intend to try one in one of my old Seiko 5's to see how it works out, could be perfect
@Navigator The batteries always seem to run out when you are on holiday and cant find a replacement, automatics dont let you down!
The best explain. I couldn’t understant how mainspring and balance spring are connected by other movies
Thanks to Tissot for cheap and very high quality watches. It is an honor to make watches since 1853.
I wouldn't say cheap. I would say affordable quality. I like that I can get a quality Swiss watch from Tissot and not break my bank account.
No questions and no doubt, Swiss people are the worlds best watch maker and inventor and they dominate the watch making industry since time immemorial! And I have a piece of Brand New Stainless Steel Classic Automatic Tissot . . . Again, thanks to the Swiss people for having a place to live w/ Swiss Watches like century old #Tissot

I just love..Tissot watches.. i just bought myself a tissot chronograph watch.
Me too and now i go for this powermatic 80 a real jewel
Seems like you don't really mean it if you have to interrupt "love" and your claimed favourite watch brand with unnecessary fullstops.
I love my Tissot 1000 Seastar! I love this movement and power reserve. Love everything about the piece. In fact my only negative about it is the 21mm lug / band width. Please consider changing to 22mm for your next model version.
Complete understand. I just ordered my seastar 1000 and cannot await to have it on my wrist 🙃
I have a PRS516 an in this "world of watches", it's not only because the brand, ist about the mechanism and the engeneering behind the watch.
I just bought a tissot prs 516 blue waiting for its arrival… man with sapphire crystal, AR coating, a robust and an accurate movement like powermatic 80 and metal bracelet in$ 658 is a total steal….. always considering the overpriced seiko watches..
I love Tissot, Tissot is the best!
I recently bought the Tissot Powermatic 80 Gentleman and its amazing, its only 1 second behind per day, 30seconds per month.
Just ordered the open heart powermatic 80 and its my first watch. Im excited for it to arrive, I got the black dial with black leather
Tenha certeza de que comprou um relógio para a vida toda.
Tissot is the best I have ever seen I have the prc200 automatic chronograph, with leather strap, a fine piece for sure, where are my prc 200 club?? Anyone??

Now THIS is art! Love it!
Major company which provides best CP in watch market.
From Tissot to Breguet, I just love all Swatch group watches!
Thank you for your support ! ❤🙌
Works of art! Well done, thx❤️
Amazing engineering which translates to +5 seconds a day accuracy, even higher priced automatics have trouble matching!
But made from plastic
Only C07.111 variants, the gentleman le locle and chemin de tourelles have .611 variant with 25 jewls and metal escapements instead of polymer. @@rsgenus1
Awesome video.
Got a Tissot Powermatic 80 on the Wish List.
Love my Tissot Seastar Silicoum.
Well it's nice video. Everything is clear and easy to understand.
Thanks
Thanks to you for your feedback! 🙂
Amazing! Definitely buying the PRX POWERMATIC 80 after this.
The caliber "Powermatic 80" used by Tissot is an upgrade of ETA 2824. The first Powermatic had 23 jewels due to using fork and escape wheel made of composite or "plastic". After that, Tissot went back to 25 jewels using metal fork and escape wheel. Also Hamilton use same 25 jewels caliber. Both calibers have free balance spring, regulated by laser. There isn't anymore the manual regulator.
Gear Box I would call it a downgrade for economic reasons, but some will think it an upgrade ..........
You regulate it inertially with the 2 screws of the balance wheel. Like any free sprung caliber.
@@peterlaurence-couzens8913 how would they save any money on it?
I love my solar quartz watches, but there will always be that certain fascination with mechanical movements. It’s a more romantic watch, if generally less accurate. Enter the Spring Drive 😇

I've spent ages on the internet and youtube trying to find out how the reversing wheels in the winding mechanism works, with no result. Can somebody please explain how it it possible that de winding wheel spins in one way no mather on which way the rotor turns? Well appreciated!
Yes
Thank you very much for the video that shows how does mechanical clocks and watches work. In quartz clocks and watches first wheel of the gear train is regulated by peizo electric motor (lavet stepping motor or smooth sweeping motor) that is powered by tuning fork shaped quartz crystal resonator that receives power from 1.5 V battery and vibrates at the frequency of 32,768 Hz and regulates the series of gears that drives the motion work to drive the hands that points seconds, minutes and hours. In mechanical clocks the spring barrel or weight pulley (cable barrel) drives the first wheel of the going train to activate the escapement the pushes the balance wheel or pendulum forward every time it returns backwards and drives the motion work of the clock to make the hands of the clock to point the hours minutes and seconds. This is the main difference between quartz clocks and mechanical clocks. Motion work is direct of the going train in some clocks and motion work is not direct part but connected to going train in some clocks in case of mechanical clocks. In quartz clocks the motion work is almost always direct part of the going train and either the mainspring barrel or weight pulley is not necessary because there is no spring driven oscillator (pendulum nor balance wheel) to drive the gear train. Thus the spring driven oscillator and escapement are replaced by quartz crystal powered peizo electric motor to drive the gear train in quartz clock.
Thank you Swatch for making this excellent illustraion
I love my Tissot PRX 80
Beautiful . I have a Sako auto and a Timex Marlin. But this will be my next watch .
THanks for the video. Well explained...i will go ahead and buy a lady tissot watch t-classic ballade powermatic 80
Nice and clear explanations ; to be recommended !
Why is the spring in a balance wheel less than half the diameter of the balance wheel, even when extended?
Tissot is my favorite and I own one finally

I didn't know some of the powermatics in Tissot were COSC certificed. I found them on sale on Jomashop but they were for ladies. Nice video.
The Tissot Ballade are all COSC
@@destryo3287 Hi. What makes the ballade COSC that the Gentleman does not have as they seem to use the exact same movement? Thanks in advance.
@@HelderAC The Powermatic 80 is just a name for the modified ETA movement which is inside. There are different serial numbers for this movement which indicate slight differences (if any).
If they are the "same", then the COSC certified has been tested to a degree which is compliant with the COSC certification. Thus it guarantees the movements to be exact to the COSC specifications. I think Tissot gives a longer warranty to their COSC watches but I am not sure.
@@destryo3287 Thanks for your answer. So if I understand correctly, being that the movements in both watches should practically be the same this would mean that even if the gentleman is not COSC certified but the balade is, they should be pretty close from an accuracy point of view, which is what ultimately matters. Correct?
I love Tissot. Im up to 16 so far...😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Rich Dubbya I have 5 of them now, I had more. Love every single one of them... I'm always getting compliments.

Tissot Ballade Powermatic 80 COSC
Why isn’t there a “Chronometer” expression on the Gentelman’s dial while having a COSC certified movement?
just ordered the Seastar 1000 dive watch. I can't wait.
how is it? I might order one.
@@mattw7796 Beutiful watch, simple, high quality and I have been wearing it now for a while, running great. I ordered the the blue with the rubber strap, very comfortable on my wrist
Have the ballade powermatic 80 cosc steel and yellow gold, it is the most accurate of all my more than twenty watches.. 😉👍
I am thinking of getting the Ballade black dial for an everyday casual/semi-sporty watch. Would you recommend it and what do you like about it?
@@robdavis1248 definitively yes, it is a absolute must have in reality, wath ever the strap ( full steel seems to be more durable question of strap) but the Mouvement of the powermatic 80 cosc silicon is so accurate in long term that you gonne be amazed for real 😉 don't forget that the other brands with the same specs are much more expensive also.. Question of brand.. Go fit it! 👍
Well done Tissot !
Beautiful 👌
Beautiful plastic pallet fork
Fantastic! I own one, it’s gentleman automatic
Same. Amazing quality for the price.
Please bring back the 2824-2 it can be regulated by any competent repairer, and can be serviced as parts are/were readily available. 4hz made for a much smoother second hand too. This looks like cost cutting masquerading as improvement. Just my opinion though, as the sad owner of an 80h pr Rado, it just doesn’t keep good time.
"Competent" watchmakers should be able to regulate a free sprung balance wheel otherwise they don't qualify as competent. Not making parts available for third parties is on purpose. Really not sure how this would be cost cutting.
I’d prefer 4Hz over 80h power reserve. I just wanted to buy a new Certina, but this is a dealbreaker
ETA movement with silicon balance and bigger mainspring
The Tissot Couturier Automatic also has powermatic 80. Is this equipped with a silicon balance spring?
My Seastar is one of my faves.
Great animation
Does the Powermatic 80 movement contain any golden parts / any gold?
Is tissot seastar 1000 powermatic 80 silicium cosc certified?
No it's misleading, even Tissot website shows one with Chronometer stenciled on the balance, but when I got mine there's nothing to indicate that it is, however watch does run like a Chronometer you get about +-4 seconds per day
Got a couple of those beauties, the seastar and the PRC 200 ... out of curiosity, for the automatic power reserve, the rotor needs to rotate clockwise or anticlockwise? Thanks 🙏🏻
Does Tissot powermatic second hand sweeps like auomatic watch or do they tick?
Apple El they sweep I refer to the case back when searching for a watch
I wish I could switch movement in my Breitling Avenger II GMT and Glycine Airman for something like this with 80h power reserve. 42h kinda sucks.
I love it
great video, big like!
Thank you ! ❤
I have a Tissot Luxury Chronometer. Are all of the silicium movements COSC certified? Or only the ones that state "chronometer" on the dial?
I think I'm getting a Tissot Gentleman in blue as a daily wear. I just need to go somewhere to see it in person.
Hello Matthew, not all our watches are COSC certified. It is always specified when it is the case. Best, Sarah
@@TISSOT I went to an AD and had them order the blue Gentleman. I love it. I think it is so well made and the best value and quality for its price point.
Is Nivachron close to the accuracy of Silicium?
Finally---I get it!
My P80 open heart🤩
Tissot swiss made good watches good video
Simplemente Te Amo TISSOT...
Beautiful movement
are cosc certified PM80 equipped with plastic escapewheel and palletfork or metallic as in 2824?
The only downside of PM80 (non-cosc) are crucial parts like escape wheel and pallet fork are made out of *PLASTIC* and that is not at all "High end" nor represents true "swiss made" quality to me....
Amazing
Is this movement disposable? can be serviced?

Of course It's serviceable.
Is automatic 4 Hz (38 hours) or Powermatic 80 (3 Hz) more accurate?
I have a Certina powermatic 80 and it gains approximately 1.5 seconds a day when worn and fully wound, a little more when not worn, way better accuracy than I was expecting, my son has a Tissot le'locle and he gets about 10-12 secs a day gain.
Best value for $$$ I have a powermatic 20 years old best!
EXCELENT MECHANISM ETA, BRASIL OK.
Right now my Seastar is my favorite watch to ware each and every day. And I have a 3 watches that are much more expensive than this one.
Wear
I like the eta 2428 - 2 moment better but this is a bit more accurate I admit .
This movement is Tissot in-house or ETA? Thank
Tissot is a part of the ETA group, so every movement of theirs is an iteration of ETA movements. The Powermatic 80 is simply an ETA 2824-2 movement with a few modifications, so that Swatch brands such as Tissot and Certina can use it, but it's basically free to use for anyone in the Swatch group.
@@henningkleppchristensen2901 Tks bro :)
Your welcome.. Glad i could help... With the info you needed..
Why a low beat rate is beyond me. Please bring back the 2824 or 2835 of that kind.
I was told by a watchmaker that if they made it at a higher frequency it would cost alot more.
@@peterzabilka3664 Incorrect. The lower beat rate helps increase the power reserve and also reduces wear and tear slightly. Audemars uses a low beat rate. If its good enough for AP its good enough for me!

Супер!!!
Sehr gutes Video. 👍
Why the gentleman collection with this movement isn't COSC ??!!
Great ..
tôi chuẩn bị sử dụng nó ! tôi rất vui vì điều này !!
Is this the same movement that is in my new Hamilton khaki field automatic ? It is the H10 movement 80 hour power reserve . Anyone know ?
Is similar, but I do not think you have the silicon balance spring.
The H10 is a normal powermatic 80 movement
The H10 is the same as the powermatic 80 but uses all metal escapement vs synthetic on the Tissot!
Pensé hablara de relojes pero no quiero oír música busco música
nice
Es SILICON O SILICE...?
lower beat not as smooth second hand have to send to Tissot to be regulated and servicedI will stick to my old one.
Tissot.... molto più di un orologio
i have three watches one is german made .one is japan and 3rd one is swiss ..i like westend swiss made
Stay away from 23 jewels powermatic 80. These are 2 jewels at the pallet fork removed to fully use plastic parts.
why didnt you put silicon 2824 or silicon 2892/2893 in PRX? I wouldve paid the higher cost. very disappointed. :(
Dear Roubén, Following a brand decision, Tissot has stopped using silicon in the watches. Instead, we are now using Nivachron, which is a material far less sensible to magnetism.
Best regards, Tissot Team
@@TISSOT Hello Tissot team. Thanks for the reply. What about Tissot gentleman lineup? The model name and this "Si" on top of balance wheel suggest use of silicium/silicon spring. Is silicium different than silicon? If yes, I meant Silicium.
Hi Roubén,
The confusion between Silicium and Silicon comes from the fact that Silicium is the French term for Silicon. So it is indeed the same thing but Tissot uses the French term. As for the Gentleman lineup, if "Si" is mentioned, it means that the balance spring (not wheel) in indeed in Silicon.
Best regards,
Tissot Team
Silicon is completely anti-magnetic whereas Nivachron if I'm not mistaken is an alloy made mostly of titanium. Titanium is only very weakly magnetic. I assume the decision was driven by the need to optimize the production process or maybe it's not possible to source silicon hairsprings in large volumes. A wire-drawn spring costs less to produce compared to silicon which is etched from a wafer. Also, silicon is brittle and not easy to work with. In the end any company must optimize the cost-to-benefit ratio.
@@baze3SC I didn't know each company in Swatch group produces its own silicon stuff (unless they have in-house movements). I thought they are mass produced and delivered to different companies with the movement. Maybe I was wrong. Also didn't know what niva actually is. If it's titanium (mainly) that also makes sense.
