I have just got the 60th anniversary DS-1 Big Date with the green dial and mesh strap. It's a lovely watch and the Swiss movement with 80-hours power reserve is part of its attraction. Am I correct in thinking it is not COSC certified?
Dear Kevin, you have indeed a beautiful watch with the MOUVEMENT POWERMATIC 80.651 H2/6H (NIVACHRON), but this movement is not COSC certified. Thanks, Tissot team.
I’ve not worn quartz for years because I really idolise automatic watches. It’s simply beautiful. It’s intricate, genius and engineering of the most intricate level. When I bought it Tissot didn’t reveal details about the movement but watch sites and reviewers always thought it had the silicon balance wheel and therefore resistant to magnetism. Just curious, my watch is still working perfectly after 6 years and no service yet.
@@michaelriera6277 They wont! All silicon balance version models indicate on the dial and come at a price premium. They will not upgrade during service!
Got a couple of those beauties, the seastar and the PRC 200 ... out of curiosity, for the automatic power reserve, the rotor needs to rotate clockwise or anticlockwise? Thanks 🙏🏻
I noticed in the animation that the pallets were jeweld, however in disassemblies I've seen that the escapement is all synthetic/plastic, similar to the sistem51. Are there different versions of the Powermatic 80 or is this animation based on a different movement?
I asked myself the same thing... I could imagine (1.) that there is a mechanism preventing the rotor from turning in the wrong direction, releasing tension of the mainspring or (2.) a mechanism which allows the rotor to turn in the wrong direction but without influencing the mainspring (i.e. a gearwheel with skewed teeth)
For older watches from the mid 1900s they would wind in 1 direction. Newer watches now have a pretty neat mechanism that allows for winding in either direction
Thank you very much for the video that shows how does mechanical clocks and watches work. In quartz clocks and watches first wheel of the gear train is regulated by peizo electric motor (lavet stepping motor or smooth sweeping motor) that is powered by tuning fork shaped quartz crystal resonator that receives power from 1.5 V battery and vibrates at the frequency of 32,768 Hz and regulates the series of gears that drives the motion work to drive the hands that points seconds, minutes and hours. In mechanical clocks the spring barrel or weight pulley (cable barrel) drives the first wheel of the going train to activate the escapement the pushes the balance wheel or pendulum forward every time it returns backwards and drives the motion work of the clock to make the hands of the clock to point the hours minutes and seconds. This is the main difference between quartz clocks and mechanical clocks. Motion work is direct of the going train in some clocks and motion work is not direct part but connected to going train in some clocks in case of mechanical clocks. In quartz clocks the motion work is almost always direct part of the going train and either the mainspring barrel or weight pulley is not necessary because there is no spring driven oscillator (pendulum nor balance wheel) to drive the gear train. Thus the spring driven oscillator and escapement are replaced by quartz crystal powered peizo electric motor to drive the gear train in quartz clock.
The caliber "Powermatic 80" used by Tissot is an upgrade of ETA 2824. The first Powermatic had 23 jewels due to using fork and escape wheel made of composite or "plastic". After that, Tissot went back to 25 jewels using metal fork and escape wheel. Also Hamilton use same 25 jewels caliber. Both calibers have free balance spring, regulated by laser. There isn't anymore the manual regulator.
I don't know how they do it. I've had a few, they're all late. Only when the main spring is partially tensioned are they punctual. With a very low tension they are late, with "medium" tension they are punctual, with full tension they are also late. Optimum is completely wrong.
I love my solar quartz watches, but there will always be that certain fascination with mechanical movements. It’s a more romantic watch, if generally less accurate. Enter the Spring Drive 😇
I have a Tissot Luxury Chronometer. Are all of the silicium movements COSC certified? Or only the ones that state "chronometer" on the dial? I think I'm getting a Tissot Gentleman in blue as a daily wear. I just need to go somewhere to see it in person.
@@TISSOT I went to an AD and had them order the blue Gentleman. I love it. I think it is so well made and the best value and quality for its price point.
@@HelderAC The Powermatic 80 is just a name for the modified ETA movement which is inside. There are different serial numbers for this movement which indicate slight differences (if any). If they are the "same", then the COSC certified has been tested to a degree which is compliant with the COSC certification. Thus it guarantees the movements to be exact to the COSC specifications. I think Tissot gives a longer warranty to their COSC watches but I am not sure.
@@destryo3287 Thanks for your answer. So if I understand correctly, being that the movements in both watches should practically be the same this would mean that even if the gentleman is not COSC certified but the balade is, they should be pretty close from an accuracy point of view, which is what ultimately matters. No it's misleading, even Tissot website shows one with Chronometer stenciled on the balance, but when I got mine there's nothing to indicate that it is, however watch does run like a Chronometer you get about +-4 seconds per day
Through the screws in the balance wheel. You can see it more clearly in a Patek or Omega but it is the same principle. Like the little screws in old pocket watches.

are cosc certified PM80 equipped with plastic escapewheel and palletfork or metallic as in 2824? The only downside of PM80 (non-cosc) are crucial parts like escape wheel and pallet fork are made out of *PLASTIC* and that is not at all "High end" nor represents true "swiss made" quality to me....
@@robdavis1248 definitively yes, it is a absolute must have in reality, wath ever the strap ( full steel seems to be more durable question of strap) but the Mouvement of the powermatic 80 cosc silicon is so accurate in long term that you gonne be amazed for real 😉 don't forget that the other brands with the same specs are much more expensive also.. Question of brand.. Go fit it! 👍
Please bring back the 2824-2 it can be regulated by any competent repairer, and can be serviced as parts are/were readily available. 4hz made for a much smoother second hand too. This looks like cost cutting masquerading as improvement. Just my opinion though, as the sad owner of an 80h pr Rado, it just doesn’t keep good time.
"Competent" watchmakers should be able to regulate a free sprung balance wheel otherwise they don't qualify as competent. Not making parts available for third parties is on purpose. Really not sure how this would be cost cutting.

I have a Tissot Luxury Chronometer. Are all of the silicium movements COSC certified? Or only the ones that state "chronometer" on the dial?
I think I'm getting a Tissot Gentleman in blue as a daily wear. I just need to go somewhere to see it in person.
Hello Matthew, not all our watches are COSC certified. It is always specified when it is the case. Best, Sarah
@@TISSOT I went to an AD and had them order the blue Gentleman. I love it. I think it is so well made and the best value and quality for its price point.
I didn't know some of the powermatics in Tissot were COSC certificed. I found them on sale on Jomashop but they were for ladies. Nice video.
The Tissot Ballade are all COSC
@@destryo3287 Hi. What makes the ballade COSC that the Gentleman does not have as they seem to use the exact same movement? Thanks in advance.
Correct?
Tissot is my favorite and I own one finally

Excelente vídeo... como se nota que no se ha hecho para televisión. ¡Genial!
just ordered the Seastar 1000 dive watch. I can't wait.
how is it? I might order one.
@@mattw7796 Beutiful watch, simple, high quality and I have been wearing it now for a while, running great. I ordered the the blue with the rubber strap, very comfortable on my wrist
How is it possible the back and forth oscilations of the balance wheel never stops? There is no loss of the energy in that balance wheel spring?
It receives energy from the gear train. That's the job of the escapement.
@@Enrico- okay, I had to watch another, more detailed video. ruclips.net/video/9_QsCLYs2mY/видео.html
I understand, but I still don't know exactly at what moment it happens that the wheel transmits energy and how much. rather, it seems to me that the energy in the balance wheel should gradually run out and the whole thing should stop, since the jewel is blocking the gear. But ok, it works even without me being able to justify it exactly. Anyway, thanks for the reply.
I have a powermatic 80 pr 100 which I truly love.
One issue, they claim it's a 80 hour watch and somehow mine always get's a full 78 hours. Any particular reason for this ? time keeping is excellent.
Dear Michael,
Thank you for your message and for your interest in our product. We are happy to have you as part of our Tissot family. Indeed, under optimal conditions this movement has a power reserve of 80 hours. However, with 78 hours there is nothing unusual about it either. All the more so as your watch is working perfectly according to your words.
Thank you again for being a member of our family and enjoy your watch.
Best regards,
T+ team
@@TISSOT Thank you for explaining :) Wonderful watch
I just bought a powermatic 80 cosc. but it does not have the si logo or silicum on the dial. does that mean i have no antimagnetic properties?
Hello,
Thanks for your message and for being part of our Tissot family. In order to assist you the best way possible, could you please, give me the watch reference ? (It starts with T...)
Waiting on your feedback and have a good day.
Best regards,
Antony
Does Tissot powermatic second hand sweeps like auomatic watch or do they tick?
Apple El they sweep I refer to the case back when searching for a watch
not sure if watch maker can fix this movment or it is for one use
I wish I could switch movement in my Breitling Avenger II GMT and Glycine Airman for something like this with 80h power reserve. 42h kinda sucks.
Is tissot seastar 1000 powermatic 80 silicium cosc certified?
No it's misleading, even Tissot website shows one with Chronometer stenciled on the balance, but when I got mine there's nothing to indicate that it is, however watch does run like a Chronometer you get about +-4 seconds per day
I love Tissot. Im up to 16 so far...😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Rich Dubbya I have 5 of them now, I had more. Love every single one of them... I'm always getting compliments.
Why don't you save up and buy a real watch? that will outlive you and that you could pass down...
@@mirceacostin7485 what do you think of frederique constant?
@@ThePocketGameplay decent, I guess...
Mohnish Choudhary breguet check it
How is the power regulated, it looks like they have got rid of the escapement?
Through the screws in the balance wheel. You can see it more clearly in a Patek or Omega but it is the same principle. Like the little screws in old pocket watches.
Looking at getting my first TISSOT PRC 200 AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH $1,530 New Zealand dollars is that a good price?

Fantastic! I own one, it’s gentleman automatic
Same. Amazing quality for the price.
are cosc certified PM80 equipped with plastic escapewheel and palletfork or metallic as in 2824?
The only downside of PM80 (non-cosc) are crucial parts like escape wheel and pallet fork are made out of *PLASTIC* and that is not at all "High end" nor represents true "swiss made" quality to me....
That's a great innovation, the silicone balance spring. Good to see, although Tissot keeps its price competitive, it still makes its own movements
Well the movement is actually made by ETA not Tissot.
Breitling, Omega & Tag Heuer also use ETA movements, so Tissot is in good company!
Silicon, not Silicone !
I love my Tissot PRX 80
Have the ballade powermatic 80 cosc steel and yellow gold, it is the most accurate of all my more than twenty watches.. 😉👍
I am thinking of getting the Ballade black dial for an everyday casual/semi-sporty watch. Would you recommend it and what do you like about it?
@@robdavis1248 definitively yes, it is a absolute must have in reality, wath ever the strap ( full steel seems to be more durable question of strap) but the Mouvement of the powermatic 80 cosc silicon is so accurate in long term that you gonne be amazed for real 😉 don't forget that the other brands with the same specs are much more expensive also.. Question of brand.. Go fit it! 👍
ETA movement with silicon balance and bigger mainspring
Is Nivachron close to the accuracy of Silicium?
Why does your escapement look like metal parts here? When we know that you use plastic parts...
I’d prefer 4Hz over 80h power reserve. I just wanted to buy a new Certina, but this is a dealbreaker
Is this movement disposable? can be serviced?
