The History of Need for Speed - Fast laps by a competitive player (NFS 1 - 10)

- In this video I will show you a fast lap in each of the first 10 NFS games for PC, which are in my opinion also the 10 best of the 20 that exist. I have played several of these games competitively in tournaments with decent success, so when I say fast laps I know what I am talking about. Feel free to write a comment if you have any questions about any of these games and I will try my best to answer them for you. :)
In some of the games I drive with certain restrictions (like no nitrous) that are common in the competitive scene or that I otherwise consider useful. Obviously you will have to do the same if you want to be able to compare your own lap times with mine.

Notice: Being fast in NFS Underground 1 and 2 involves the use of wallriding on almost every track. This is a totally normal and accepted thing to do among competitive NFS players and I am doing it in this video as well. If you have a problem with that, then this channel is the wrong place for you and complaints about it in the comments are not welcome here.

NFS 1-6 had the best level designs. Tracks were so much more interesting.
NFS Underground 1, Underground 2, and Most Wanted was when the series hitted it's peak. From carbon onwards its a rollercoaster of shitty/mediocre/barely okay games.
Damn, watching this I remembered using the same car you used on underground 1, was definitely the best car =) So many good memories of online multiplayer on that one
Carbon was still awesome too. :) The first bad NFS was ProStreet.

Hot Pursuit 2 was a masterpiece of a Racing Game
The only NFS I've played (apart from NFSW).

Wow, that was just godlike performance! Never knew people drove like this in arcade games like NFS too. Thats some amazing driving man.
Wow those are seriously quick times, especially on hp2 and porsche unleashed, very clean driving! I am in no way on that level, but I remember nfs3 (it's where it started for me) , on the hometown level you showed, I remember being able to do a time way under a minute with the el nino - you should definitely try few runs if you hadn't!
Need for speed porsche. this game is the reason why i still play racing games.

Can I ask what you used to record some of the earlier NFS games? I've been wanting to LP NFSII SE on my channel for quite some time but both my recording programs (Open Broadcaster Software and Mirllis Action!) cause the game to crash each time.

Definitely NFS 1. :)
There are several tracks where it is super hard to do a clean race because the handling of the cars is very difficult and the tracks are very tight. You have to drive a perfect line if you don't want to crash. And the AI opponents are really strong as well. It is a real challenge to win a full tournament with all of the tracks against them.

Ah nice vid man. Underground 1 was where it all started for me...I feel like I might have vague memories of hot pursuit 2 at friend's houses or something...especially that track that you showed. Those were the days for need for speed games for sure, they just kept getting better up until carbon. To have played back in '96 you must be what, late 20s early 30s in age?
I wish I had online when most wanted came out, cus I always hear that that was pretty competitive online...but that was right when xbox live was starting to get big and I had it for ps2 anyway, and didn't have playstation online or whatever it was called.
Carbon was the pinnacle for me though, best racing game I've ever played. I don't understand why in the wcg they don't allow the audi and corvette...why would you eliminate the two fastest cars? I can understand no nos (even though I don't have a problem with it) but no audi/corvette confuses me.
Actually my first NFS game for PC was also Underground 1. I bought the previous ones later to complete my collection and to just get to know them as well. I didn't have them all when they were new. :)
Unfortunately I was also a bit too late or not good enough yet for most of the major competitions like WCG. :(
Regarding the WCG rules for Carbon I am not totally sure but I believe it might have been to prevent cheating in the online qualifiers (where it is hard to control) because I remember that there was some talk at the time about the possibility of hacking the game to change the performance of the Audi and particularly that of some Cop Corvette from the bonus cars (which could be disguised as a normal one). I don't know all the details about that though. I guess that is one advantage that consoles have compared to PC. People can't hack on them so easily.
Either way I personally really like the WCG car rules for Carbon (unlike those for MW, which I therefore refuse to use) because I think that the Evo is just more fun to drive than the Audi and the Corvette. Especially the Corvette has a pretty bad handling. :)

On another note, there must be a reason for the 3rd-gear McLaren F1LM in HP2 and the stock/low level transmission Corolla in UG2. Do they offer a benefit compared to the top tier parts?
Well, in HP2 there are no car parts. The gears of that car simply are that long when you play with manual transmission. And in U2, MW and Carbon you can sometimes get better acceleration with a lower transmission. You might lose some top speed but it might still be high enough anyway. For example the Lotus Elise in MW can reach 370+ km/h with Ultimate + Junkman transmission and only 345 with Super Pro + Junkman but without nitrous 345 is good enough on most tracks and the acceleration will be better.

Did NFSHP2 have different versions? I know this is the pc port, but what I mean is different releases with other differences, because National Forest looks A LOT different from the PS2 one, and I don't mean graphics, but design overall.

It's difficult ti believe the only reason was, cuz it's different from previous games, it had to be that more then some cars were better then others, because I also saw even some cars that weren't allowed.

Do you do any speedruns of these games? I feel like with your intuition and control you'd be able to give KuruHS a run for his money and some good competition.
No, I don't do speedruns. Actually most of the top NFS players don't. To be honest I feel a bit bad when I see some of the comments that Kuru is getting. It seems like a lot of people think that he is the first person that is trying to be very fast in NFS games? That's not the case at all actually.
Competitive NFS has been a thing for over 10 years already and many people have spent hundreds of hours pushing the times in many NFS games to the limit. We just don't do speedruns of the career modes. Instead we try to set records on individual tracks or in individual events. That way only the driving skill matters and not how fast we click through the menus and stuff like that.
Don't get me wrong, speedruns are interesting in their own way and Kuru seems to be great at them but most of the top NFS players (including me) just aren't interested in them because we just want to drive fast and not figure out in which order to do events and how to get lucky with the police AI and so on.
I never really looked at Kuru's gameplay but I would bet that there are dozens of people that could beat his times on individual tracks in NFS MW. Not because I assume that he is bad but because there are just so many people who are extremely good at that game. The general public just isn't aware of them because for some reason it is so focused on career mode speedruns, even though most of the top players in racing games aren't actually doing those.
If you are someone who is watching Kuru's streams, then maybe ask him to practice some tracks in quickrace with maxed out cars one day, for example NFS World Loop, which is the longest track in NFS MW. I would be curious what time he could reach there. :)

lol. It just happens to be the best car for that track in that game. That's all. These are competitive runs. I just used whatever is fastest, not what I think are cool cars or anything like that. :)
Why do you choose the bumper/hood cam only for certain games, and the chase cam for others? Is there a specific reason?
I just use the camera that gives me the best feeling for the car and the track in each game. And due to the different physics and camera angles in different games it may not always be the same one.

Yeah, I saw it. They are stupid. They probably just picked Rivals because it is the newest NFS and didn't actually look at the game a single time. Otherwise they would know that it is terrible for competition. I sent an email to them and explained why it is bad and why they should rather choose NFS MW but I didn't get a response.

cvvvv111 But Starcraft 2 is also a good game. It works. Rivals is not a good game, especially not for a tournament. For example there are traffic and police in multiplayer. It is too random.
NFS World would be a bad choice too. There are different tracks available every week, so you can't really prepare for the matches in advance. Also people have an advantage if they spend a lot of real money for cars and upgrades. That is not good.
If they really want NFS they should choose NFS MW. It is old but it is still the most popular NFS and it works very well for a tournament. You don't always have to choose the latest games. The big tournaments also still played CS 1.6 when Source was already out because the competitive players just liked it more. :)

raz3r WECG is a new organization that is basically a spiritual successor of WCG. They want to host a Grand Final somewhere in China in December. You can find them on wecg.com and on Facebook. They had a vote on their website last month where people could choose which games they want to see and in the racing category a possible choice was NFS Rivals among others like Forza and Gran Turismo.
