This just shows you how impractical independent suspension is, it does not load share. Imagine what is going on with your ball weight when traveling over uneven road surfaces. Always buy a van with a simple load sharing suspension such as leaf spring rocker roller system, even better with shockers. The ride and handling is superb.
I believe the situation is more complex and worth further testing, especially for dual axle setups. Our van has a front door, which required moving the wheels further back compared to the standard rear door model. This adjustment shifts the pivot point. I’m curious if this affects the dynamics and tow ball weight. Specifically, does the tow ball weight behave more like a single axle setup, or does it still follow the dual axle example, but to a greater or lesser extent? An example on a dual axle van with and without the water tanks full, 1/2 full, or emptying the rear or front tank first, would also be interesting.
Well done guys. We had our new 2024 van weighed last week and went 3177kg empty, 202kg on the ball and the compliance plate stated 2980 tare and 230kg ball weight..... What hope have travelers got when laws don't exist to hold manufacturers accountable...
All vans should be weighed after construction to ensure that the numbers stated on the plate are accurate for each individual van, as per ROVER compliance. We would suggest to you contact your dealer/manufacturer to sort it out.
Good job guys, a good explanation. Your dual axle van used has a non load sharing suspension like most of the newer vans these days. A load sharing suspension like my old Bushtracker caravan or your van fitted with air bags instead of coil springs will have the same result on the ball weight as your single axle van.
You will still find a weight transfer to the axles with air suspension, yes you will get better weight share but you will still find transfer to the axles as you lift or lower the tow ball height.
Amazing tests. Very hard to find these types of tests on the internet. Most are just how to weigh a van. Would love to see more education videos on comparing weights even what two bikes at the back on vs off or two jerry cans at the back on vs off, generator up front on or off do to the tow ball weight. On a dual axle leaf sprung van if possible 😅
Great video. One question I have is what happens to towball download, when you have been away for say a week, and your water tanks are about empty and your grey water is full. Does this affect download much at all?
Hey, yes, it does affect the tow ball depending on where your tanks are located. if water tanks are forward and you use water your ball weight will generally decrease and if you grey water is rear that also lightens the tow ball.
Watched your video on raising and lowering comparing singe and dual axle caravans. You don’t distinguish between dual axle independent suspension and what I Val rocker arm which has leaf springs. Please inform about what effect raising and lowering would have with the rocker arm type dual axle
Good video. I agree that water tanks should be either side of the axle. Nice presentation of single v dual axle.
Great video! I wish the weighing companies in Sydney would work with you to perfect your towing setup like Aaron and Hayley did here

Very helpful. Thanks!

So your tare was way over but your ball weight was under. Where are you going with this?
Thanks, great video.

We'll certainly be doing more videos in the near future, so we'll keep your suggestions in mind. Thank you!

Hmmmm. 2 water tanks forward of the axle does not sound good.
One either side is ideal.

14 kg, 15 kg??? Have plenty of margin and don't worry about all of this.
This is more for a guide on what can happen. We always suggest have a margin so you can change things up if needed.

You made a mistake in the second test and showed -119 on the screen.. but actually it was +119 as shown in the table.
Otherwise , thanks for the info.
No mention of weight distribution hitches?
We might take a look at those in a future video!
