Thanks for sharing this, you just shown me my old youthful memories!! I worked in that Walmart in 1998 to 1999 then moved to Phx, AZ Wow that old movie theater i used to go to a lot back in the day.. Remember seeing the 1989 Batman there and Total Recall(Arnold's version not Collin Ferrells) and many many other films. And I worked at that PizzaHut too in my teen years!! The Walmart opened in 1992 and I used to go to the Zayre then Aimes back in the day.. Wow what memories.. i used to live right behind McDonald's on Best Place..
I'm not THAT much older than you (LOL) but I remember when West Plaza was still a good center with almost zero vacancy. You're right, there was a Zayre store on the site in the 70's & 80's but it was a completely different building which faced Galena, with its back to McDonald's. WalMart tore it down before building their store. They also had a gas station out closer to Galena. The West Plaza Cinemas were roughly where Sally Beauty is now, and the road behind it came through next to the theater. There's a lot more I remember about West Plaza that's too long to put here in the comments but an email discussion would be great if you want.
I thought there used to be a theatre also an Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips and Buchman's Bakery near the McDonald's. I remember as a little kind Ben Franklin, a Town and Country, a big bank of some kind and last time I was over that way the Colonial Cafe was still there.
I was living over there in the early 2000s. A McDonald's is going where the gas station used to be. A buddy of mine says that the Arthur treathers is where Browns chicken is.
@@eringalin2075 according to a buddy of mine arthur treachers is where Browns chicken is now. The big bank is a 5th 3rd bank. When I was living there in the early 2000s, Ben Franklin's was over there along with true value. The bakery is something else now.
@@eringalin2075 Going back even farther than Mallaholic did... :-) in the 70's, Arthur Treacher was across from McDonald's. Brown's Chicken is there now (same building, I think) but it's been a few other places between Treacher's and Brown's. Ben Franklin started as Scott's, then became TG&Y, then Ben Franklin. Town & Country was there, and across the road from it was First American Bank, now 5/3. Buchner's Bakery started as a Spiegel Catalog outlet, then became the bakery, and I think it's now Kenny Korn.
@@mallaholicretailadventures I thought Swanson's Hardware was gone before I moved out in late 1992 but maybe it stayed True Value for a while. That space was originally a Kroger but they pulled out of the Midwest in the early 70's.
That area was full of shoppers in the 70's and 80's, but by the early 90's was getting less traveled. The walmart was horrible inside, really old fashioned and cruddy, years ago.
I miss that Walmart so much. It was a mile from my home. They always had lots of customers. It was always busy. Now I have to drive 8 or 10 miles to get to a Mal-Wart. We used to refer to it as the Ghetto Walmart. I remember eating in what used to be the Pizza hut too. The McDonalds has been moved out closer to the street now.
The movie theaters are where the Hobby Lobby/Omni (old food store) was at. The Pizza Hut became "CURVES" (women's health club thing) and then became China Hut for a while. I don't know what it is now. Yes, the Wal Mart was a dump because it was unkept and poorly maintained. =M=
Yeah. Theres few more in central Illinois that just up and closed and people depended on them. Pana and Clinton. In this case this did up and closed but coexisted with other nearby super Wal-Mart's for a number of years. Montgomery Wal-Mart is only 3 miles from this one.
Lol... So that's what it is now huh? Geez last I remember it was a Mexican Bakery after Buckner's for awhile.. I used to live on Best Place right behind there 29 years ago!! Even worked at the Micky Dee's at West Plaza as a teen going to West high.. I really like your videos, keep that going..
Can you please come to bensenville,il theres a few abandoned store fronts and a restaurant or two thats vacant i can provide locations as ive been an almost 33 year resident of bensenville,Illinois
I used to go to this Walmart a ton and also the Jewel Osco nearby. That was in elementary school, now I'm in high school. How time flies by.
same here bro!
Beside Wal-Mart and Zayre there was also an Ames store. And where the Big Lot store currently sits there used to be a Omni Supermarket.
Ames bought out Zayre in the late 80's and renamed the store.
You forgot Dominicks was there first before Omni was built in 1994 or opened in 94
And a movie theater where the cigarette hut sits and pizza hut where the sushi bar is now

I miss 90's aurora. Waldo's dollar Matt on lake Street was the biggest 1 dollar store I've ever seen
I filmed the thrift and dollar that replaced the waldos. It's on my channel. Still has all the aesthetic.
I used to go to that Walmart back in the 2000s. OLD MEMORIES!!!!
I grew up in Oswego. My brother worked at Zayre in high school. I remember the theatre and McDonalds.

I miss that wall mart😭😭😭🥺😢 i grew up with that
Walmart Closes In 2016
Isn't there another abandoned walmart on RT 59 by Fox Valley?
Yeah. Its on 59. I have that on my channel as well.
It was never a Super Wal-Mart. That is why we didn't shop there for everything. We still had to go to 2 different stores.
From someone who grew up here, the ZAYRE was exactly where the Wal Mart was at, but it faced Galena Blvd... Where as the Wal Mart faces east.

Same
This was the closest Walmart by me bruh many memories of going to the McDonald’s and then going to the Walmart lmao miss that Walmart bruv
Yo ya that mcdonalds play place was HUGE

There is a Former Walmart in Litchfield, and it is now a Maurices
I think this location is still closed (circa Sunday, January 19, 2020).
It still is. I live in town.
Same state, different regions! You're up near Chicago, while I'm right across from St Louis.
This was actually taped almost a year ago.
Holy shittt this reminds me of those old places in my city
Did they shut that place down
Yes now they also took off the McDonald's with a new McDonald's by the walmart
You forgot about Buckner's Bakery behind where pizza hut used to be!!
The popcorn place? I remember the bakery when i lived over there 20 years ago.
