the punishment of prison should only be taking away their freedom, on the inside of the prison everything should be focused on rehabilitation. They already dont have freedom, why punish them more
I'm with you there. What is the priority of imprisoning people? Is it punishing people or is it making sure they don't commit crime again? I'd prefer if they didn't commit crime again. So how do we do that? Therapy maybe? Job training or education services so they can get a job when they get out? Making prison life more like outside life? Some real basic punishment theory that just seems obvious if you actually want them to not do crime again. If they don't have a life sentence they are going to reenter society at some point. Preparing them for that seems like a good idea. Putting them in a cage and treating them like... well criminals, doesn't seem conductive to that goal. I don't mind the idea of letting psychologists determine sentences and having psychologists in charge of the prison system. The current sentencing seems arbitrary.

Hey someone who is in an education field here. Wanted to comment relating to schools being used for job training question. Ideally the primary focus of k-12 education is to teach critical thinking, essential skills, and social skills. Teaching these three set you up to not only do well in the work force but also to allow the student to be creative and possibly pave their own path or create their own buisness. Focusing specifically on training for the workforce constricts the student and in the worse case scenario can harm their creativity. Our economy/society looks very different than it did just a decade ago. Focusing to specifically on training for the current economy is not a good idea as it changes and you could be teaching skills that will be irrelevant when they enter the work force. It is more beneficial for the student to learn the three general skills mentioned above. This gives them the ability to learn whatever skills they need moving forward to adjust to their specific situations. Though trade training (welding, mechanical, etc) is a good thing to offer imo if this is what the student wants to do and if the monetary and professional resources exist in the district. Something you learn working with students is that they don't like to fit into neat boxes. Their interests, abilities, values, and identities vary from each other though they may seem very similar at the surface level. It is crucial that their unique characteristics and creativity is supported/fostered as opposed to making them into worker bees. It is a big focus of me and my colleagues to integrate students interests into assignments and skill acquisition. This allows them to learn more about what they are interested/talented in while also gaining the skills above. Making this switch in focus statistically significantly improved our students grades, attendance, and college acceptance. Also more of our students are now pursuing careers related to their interests/talents as opposed to previous students where we found many pursuing careers their parents wanted then to or careers they didn't necessary have an interest in but were doing it for the pay. The former is shown in research to lead to better professional outcomes and career success than the later contrary t8 what you may have been told
