Thank you so much for your videos. I am a general education teacher. I teach second grade in a public school. I have always loved sign language. When I started teaching 13 years ago, I decided to use ASL in my classroom. My kids love it and they go home and teach their family members. I am mostly self taught. I don’t have any deaf friends or know anyone that signs so I can’t practice with anyone, so your videos really help me and my students. Happy St. Patrick’s Day ☘️ 🐭
Great video my little brother watches your videos and I think you deserve more then you get you help a lot with teaching deaf people etc. thank you for everything!
I watched the movie _Baby Driver_ last night, and it features a deaf character named Joe. Joe signed what was captioned as "Good Luck" near the movie's end, but "luck" looked an awful lot like "I love you" because it had both middle fingers down rather than just the "open 8" middle finger, and it was faced wrong. All of the other signs looked correct, and you'd assume an actual expert in sign was there to look over such scenes, but it appears that you've confirmed that this one sign from the movie was a blunder.
Oooh YES such a good movie! I'd have to find that screenshot to be sure, but I highly doubt it was a mistake; the actor who played Joe is a well-known Deaf actor and comic (CJ Jones - he's great! Look him up!), so I trust that he used correct ASL signs. It may have looked like the ILY handshape if the ring finger was slightly down -- keeping in mind than an open-8 handshape is not really all fingers 100% upright -- the index and (especially) ring finger tend to get pulled down a bit with the middle finger, too. ALSO - it's quite possible he was signing both -- Good luck, I love you! (Sometimes the captions are the ones that are inaccurate with what was actually signed, depending on who did the captioning or if the signing differed at all from the original script.)
@@ASLMeredith I think that's the case, that the caption was inaccurate. It made sense in context that he'd follow "good luck" with "I love you". I knew he was a deaf actor, so I highly doubted that he was signing wrong :p I thought perhaps he had just flubbed the line and no one noticed. Thanks for the response. I always appreciate the effort you put into educating us.
I there! I love your videos. They have helped me so much in my job, but recently I started working as a cashier, and I'm wondering if you could do a video about some common questions cashiers ask? Some common things we ask are... "Did you find everything okay?" "Follow me, I can show you" "Do you need bags?" Thanks so much.
I'm learning ASL and I have a lot of trouble understanding what people sign in TV shows, RUclips videos, etc. I don't live near many deaf/HOH people so I also don't have a lot of practice. Do you have any tips for comprehending sign more easier? Thanks :)
What online courses or online college classes do you recommend taking? I’m interested in learning the linguistics and anything else there is to learn. Thank you🤍 love your videos
Hi Taylor, thanks for your question! I suggest a bunch of online course options at bit.ly/remoteASL and also a great linguistics book if you're interested at bit.ly/ASL-resources
Hi Dianna, thanks for your feedback! In this video, the vocabulary lesson begins at 0:35, and for each word displayed on-screen, I show the sign in isolation and repeat it several times. If you want to see that part even slower, or if you want to try to follow the introduction and explanation sections (when I sign at regular speed), please use RUclips's video controls to slow the speed down to half or quarter speed. Hope that helps!
