- In this video, we went to Moharram nights in Tehran. Tehran's nights are very crowded these days because we have reached the month of Muharram and many ceremonies are held during these days. I went to Azerbaijan neighborhood to show you a part of this ceremony.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is considered one of the most sacred and solemn months in the Islamic year. It is particularly significant for Shia Muslims, who observe the Day of Ashura on the 10th of Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
The events surrounding Imam Hussain's death in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE are the central focus of Muharram observances for Shia Muslims. Imam Hussain, along with his family members and close companions, were killed by the armies of the Umayyad caliph Yazid I. This event is viewed as a defining moment in Islamic history and a struggle between good and evil, justice and tyranny.
During Muharram, Shia Muslims engage in mourning rituals, processions, and passion plays that re-enact the events of Karbala. These include public meetings where the story of Imam Hussain's martyrdom is recounted, self-flagellation, and the beating of chests as a display of grief. Many Shia also abstain from music, dancing, and other joyful activities during this month.
For Sunni Muslims, Muharram is observed in a more general manner. Many fast on the 10th of Muharram, known as the Day of Ashura, to commemorate the day when Prophet Moses was saved from Pharaoh by God. The month is also seen as an opportunity for spiritual reflection, repentance, and renewal.
Regardless of sect, Muharram is an important time for Muslims to remember the sacrifices made for the faith and to reaffirm their commitment to the teachings of Islam. The observances serve to strengthen community bonds and pass on historical and religious traditions to future generations.

I understand that before Iran revolution people bleed themselves from these swords but now due to restrictions from government they are just moving swords not bleeding themselves with sword.
Am I right?
Yes, you are correct. Before the Iranian Revolution, swords were more common, but due to government restrictions, participants now often move the swords without causing actual bleeding. This change is a result of efforts to reduce the more extreme forms of self-harm during religious rituals.
But in some places, we have that tradition, but because of the push of government, they do in private home with out any camera 📷
