According to Toyota own words, the 2.8 “equals or exceeds the torque of the 4.5 V8 from 1400-3400rpm”.
That might be difficult for people to understand when they see that the 2.8 peak torque of 500nm is listed as 1600-2800rpm.
But note the word peak. So when it’s not at its peak (under the curve) 500nm at 1600-2800rpm. It may be at 430nm at say 1400rpm, thus equals the peak torque of the V8 and exceeding 1450rpm all the way to 2800rpm.
Also note Toyota state the 2.8 makes 150kW between 3000rpm to 3400rpm. The V8 is strictly at 3400rpm.
Correct.

I'm about to retire and I am retiring with a V8. The young uns can soldier on with the 4 cylinder and the electric version whenever it comes out 😄
Everybody should know by now that the V8 is a very much detuned version of the V8 in the 200 series. It was never meant to be fast but it was meant to be reliable in the mines,(thats one main reason the 70 series still exists) farms etc. in a time when fuel didnt cost $2 or more. Its a farm truck, who cares how fast it is or isnt as long as it gets the job done for a long time.
We'll see how the 4 cylinder goes over time?
It's a Toyota, it'll be fine.
Not that the 1VD was particularly reliable...

Reliable in the mines?!?!?!?? Is that why they're bring in N/A 4.2L Cruisers (yes 1HD's) from India and South Africa to use in the mines... the V8's are dog shit in the mines, trust me from experience...
Well nothing like doubling down on the Landcruiser content and the somewhat salty V8 owners are coming thick and fast to defend their beloved V8 that's more than 13 years old. Now to wait for the next episode of Bench Torque.
If you want a diesel V8 you go to Ford, GMC or Scania, Toyota obviously don't know what they're doing with theirs.
@@jrburger95 From what I understand Toyota will dump the V8 soon and most likely go to the twin turbo V6 that's in the Landcruiser wagon. Toyota isn't going to spend any coin on the V8 that's very clear.

i think peoples biggest issue with the swap of engine is the reliability of a 4 cyl so highly strung as apposed to a v8 running at 50% duty cycle

Doesn't change what I posted.
The facts are that nearly every other 1t ute sold in Australia makes the same power, and more torque than the 4.5 V8 with half the fuel usage.
Most of them are also reliable. Toyota has done a good thing to finally move with the times and fit the more sensible engine option.
We don't have any trouble with Hiluxes and Prados in the fleet.

Did anyone honestly think toyota was naive enough to bring the already contested 70 with the 4cyl to market and not make sure it outperforms the v8. They are doing it because they have to with emissions as we all know, but at the same time they want you to like it so they can continue to sell it to you, hence why the two engines are overlapping so people in order to make the consumer make the decision to go with 4cyl so it can be spun as though that is what the ppl wanted. Now that I think about it, there’s a lot of parallels here between the Land Cruiser, and the Falcon, and Commodore (and more collectively; Holden).
Sales of Falcon and Commodore were in an ongoing sales slide for a decade or more. When both were finally canned, the common discourse was people raging about how these companies had turned their back on the consumers and brand loyalists, but the more common piece of dialogue was words to the effect of “I’ve still got dad’s 197# Falcon/Torana”, or “I’m still driving my first Falcon/Commodore that I bought in 199#”.
And that was the problem; people weren’t buying the new vehicles, which lead to the ultimate demise of the nameplates.
Toyota slapped the 1VD in the Land Cruiser, and whilst all the LC fanbois talk about how reliable they are because they just keep going, the 1VD club just wax lyrical about the longevity it will have due to the low-stress nature of the motor.
That’s a problem. Reliable vehicles don’t make companies money. They want you to buy a new vehicle every few years. They don’t get anything out of you by selling you a vehicle that will last 20, 30, 40 years.
The V8 could conceivably be kept alive, but if the 1GD does the job, and they last half as long, so you have to buy the vehicle more often, Toyota will make more money out of you.
Reliability doesn’t improve boardroom balance sheets.
As Aus moves towards Euro 6 regs OE's aren't interested in investing in old engines to keep them alive. 👍
V8 Vs L4 Vs an AU ute
Intech would lap Sandown before the Cruisers were out of second gear
Sadly toyota didnt put an auto in the V8 - then it would be something to finally sing about. It is evident the V8 is not long for this world and all those owners waiting for the order books to reopen - if even 50% change their minds and grab a 2.8L, the writting is clearly on the wall for V8. Auto options aftermarket is an option, with Aisin 6 speed and ZF 8 speed - but no change out of $25k.
I would like to see you guys now do a test at GVM and full tow capacity. I’m interested to see is the 4 banga can still hold up. If so I might even buy one haha
Look at the guy on you tube doing it

Something to be said for the Modern Diesel Injection System.
25% aprox capacity disadvantage and it still holds up well. Would have been informative to know the boost levels on each, but honestly for abuse level durability and fuel quality considerations the the tell is the fuel system. Complexity is the natural enemy of long term serviceability. Regardless these sell like all vehicles to New vehicle buyers and as long as they get a good run out of them after they are sold on it doesn't really matter. If I was hunting down a new 70 series the 4 would be the one for me. If it was 2040 and I was looking for a a 70?
Nice one Guys.

Not a V8 owner and I prefer my 1GR-FE. Does anyone know if the internals have been improved on the 1GD In the 70? Conrods, different materials etc. Have they beefed up the components or have they just mapped and regeared a 1GD from a Prado/Hilux and popped it in the 70 ?
Been having a chat to a mate who builds LCs and he is worried about the reliabilty of the 70 with the 4 pot. As the one dude said Toyota EngiNerds know what they're doing so we can only wait and see.
There have been changes to the 1gd motor, mainly with the cooling and oil systems for increased reliability.
The auto tranny has also been beefed up with a bigger oil pan and a few other things
If you slap a 15k supercharger, 3k exhaust and a 2k tune on the mighty boat anchor, it might stand half a chance 😂😂😂

Will there be a Fullboost build on one of these?
But but something about boost and final drive ratio.
Seethe more.
I'd be interested in seeing how the F33A + 10 speed auto would go in the 70 series.
It’s not about how fast it is or any other figures for that matter….both vehicles will do what they’re meant to, it’s the sound of the V8 engine that people love…I’ve had 3 of them and love the sound wether stock or with work done they just sound tuff, might be ridiculous but it’s a fact and it’s why the V8 is king and always will be….you simply can not get the right sound out of a 4 cylinder, if you add an aftermarket exhaust that just makes a 4 cylinder sound even worse.
😂😂
Can you order a 2.8 LC with the V8 sound via the stereo from the factory ?? 😂 I'm happy to pay the extra for the stereo because it probably doesn't come standard in the 70 series. 😁
Fullboost, you will never make a 4 cyl cooler than a V8.
I'm wondering if the v8 landcruiser is underpowered because trying to get a diesel v8 to pass the strict emissions regulations is basically impossible if you want it to make a decent amount of power, so has to be heavily restricted. Or, if it just isn't really that good of engine.
I'm guessing it's the first one. But i could be wrong 🤷♂️
I've had this thought and you're probably right. Either way though it's old tech and inefficient, I know what I'd prefer
Nope, that's not it at all. Cylinder count has no impact on emissions.
Well Toyota is allegedly lining up deliveries of V8’s to be done before the end of 2025. The new Euro 6d laws take effect from December 2025.
Kinda sounds like Toyota is aligning the end of the V8 with emissions regulation changes…
Here sir, take some salt for that there wound!
does the 4 cylinder come in hybrid?
So a ranger 3L V6 puts out 600nm and the 2.8 4cyl puts out 500nm. The ranger V6 is making 100nm more with just 200cc, now that’s highly strung.
There are numerous examples of the 2.8 ticking over 500k as these engines have been around for like 13 years now.
The 2.8 came out in 2015. So not quite 13 years ago yet, but going on 10 and if take out the timing chain rattles ( most common fault ) they are a decent motor. Im still yet to see one smash a hole in the piston / crack a piston ( 1kd things ) or any sort of manjor mechanical failure. Only time iv seen it happen is negligence. And even then its a rare sight
By far the worst sounding drag race of all time I was stuck in the boss’s 2016 lc79 on Thursday while the 5cyl bt50 I normally drive was getting serviced haven’t driven one in 6+ years they are even worse driving and sounding then I remember chewed through 60L of fuel to do 360kms on the highway my foot was sore from basically being stuck in the firewall the entire time was very happy to be back in the 5cyl bt50 for the last day of work on Friday I hope it’s another 6+ years before my ass hits a landcruiser seat absolute shit heap
Also have to complain about a 2016 car not having cruise control $90k no cruise control what a joke
The 4 cylinder is filling a gap in the market traditionally the 70s has 2 engine options and it does in Africa but due to emissions requirements we don't get the 6 cylinder in Australia.
Life expectancy of the 4 cylinder is obviously alot lower than the v8 which is completely subjective due to the meat behind the wheel.
Now the v8 boys get to really learn what engine configuration is about haha. Noise.
Wow
I'm no mechanic, but would it be possible, or perhaps the question is - how hard would it be to take the auto gearbox from the 2.8 and stick that into the V8.
After sonmay years in the auction industry (37) i finally dont have a landcruiser as a daily (still have worlds best fj45 tho). Insold my 2020 79 and bought a hilux. Why? That’s exactly what owners of 1HZ and 1HD powered Landcruisers said when the V8 was released in 2007. Remember that a new Landcruiser is never as good as the old one.
You mean pissy little V8, since it lost... more like the mighty 4 banger?
It won't take long before the TDI4 outsells the TDV8. the 4cyl seems to outclass the 8cyl in every area other than exhaust note.
Fantastic video. Straight to the point and informative. I also cant say i’m surprised at the results - the V8 jumping off the line is a direct result of the sheer off-idle torque that thing makes. But once rolling, it seems the 4 cylinder takes the take easily.
No, it was a direct result of dropping the clutch and wrecking it! I wouldn't want to buy that thing now!
lol fucking hell
@@billybunter3753 i’d argue that the torque of the V8 off-idle (as stated) is a whole lot higher than the 4 cylinder can muster just due to displacement. Give the 2.8 a manual and it’d be interesting to see how it launches the first 2 metres or so compared. Happy to be proven wrong of course.

Like is said on insta, not to discredit the 2.8 which seems like a welcome improvement however - the V8 is detuned so the ‘farm truck’ doesn’t have similar power to the top of the line 200 series otherwise nobody would buy it. Hence the massive gains from a minor dyno tune It’s like Porsche making the cayman deliberately worse to not hurt 911 sales or skodas being poorly equipped to not compete with VWs etc. Not sure why the v8 wasn't buffed slightly with the facelift though as they could then charge even more for that option, probably dont want to hurt the 300s v6 🤣

All i know is the the hiace van with the 2.8D is awesome, with the ugly brick choc to the brim
Obviously the V8 motor is heavily de-tuned so it can last a long time, this V8 motor was not intended to be a big drag race machine, the LandCruiser is basically a work vehicle not something you track or drag race, this is just meant to be a fun test, also the 4 cylinder is newer so better technology and efficiency, that V8 is nearly two decades old.
151kW/430Nm from the V8 compared to the 2.8L 4cyl 150kW/500Nm
Obviously the 4cyl is highly boosted while the V8 is, as I said heavily de-tuned. 151kW from a 4.5L V8 is ridiculously low but obviously if you want to get more out of it from factory you easily can, and also there is way less stress on the V8 motor compared to the 4, the 4 banger has to work twice as hard to get the power out.
It’s funny when people argue about some slow ass vehicles. 😅
Well I think that went exactly as expected, v8 for me thanks.
Yes the 2.8 is better than the baby 253 v8 or 4.5 not even a 5l remember 😂
I like land Cruiser ❤🎉
So i think the final question is tunability. We all know that in standard form the v8 is very understressed. Time to get them both on a dyno and see what can be done in the way of tune. Not many people who modify them are going to leave the stick tune in a vdj
Yep there is an obvious reason why so many are tuned. 😉
For an understressed motor, they seem to blow up around the 250,000 k mark a bit too often.

The fact that the new 70 series has a 6 speed auto and diff ratio to suit that alone is why the 2.8L 4 would out perform the 4.5L 8 all day long.
asking the big question that every petrol head is wondering
Drag racing farm trucks on bitumen ... what a brilliant idea ... what you will come up next.?
Would be interesting to see how the 4 cylc is after 500ks on the clock and has done halk of it either in 4wd and or towed 3 tonnes on the back. Diesiel engines were made to work and keep ticking over not set labd speed records. The 70 series was built to work and work and guess what work anx that isnt dropping tolhe kids off at private school with a cello in the back. And the only time its put in 4wd is when the mother needs to get over the kerb. And that is when you will see the power of the V8 also the less eletronics and driving aids the better even keep the manual side mirrors.
I guess you had better get used to it as the old V8 is dead with Euro6 emissions around the corner here.
@@fullboost wouldn't be too certain of that. As the V8 Tundra in North America is in high demand and no inclination of that getting dropped. And globally the 70 V8 series has a reputation. If Toyota feel that their reputation is dropping and companies that are the big buyers of the landcrusier start going else where then Toyota will quickly back track which they have been known to do before.
