I agree with you 100% about cultural appropriation. IMO the most exciting music has always been the result of the merging of cultures i.e. Rock & Roll, Swing, etc. Unfortunately artists such as the Beatles, Stones, Elvis, etc. have been scapegoated because of those historical atrocities you referenced. All 3 of those artists performed out of love for the music & respect for the culture from which they sprang. @@mcbrodz1663 I see your point. With the Graceland album came out South Africa was still under apartheid and there was a cultural boycott on S. Africa's apartheid. This was broken numerous times but Paul Simon caught the most backlash. Paul Simon received numerous death threats and there was a bomb that went off outside of a venue he and the performers were due to play that evening in London. The leader of the ANC happened to live in London at the time. One of the two major protest groups had decided to assassinate Simon until a musician (I think it Steven Van Zant) who talked them out of their plan. The backlash was harsh because some musicians were campaigning to stop musicians from performing in S. Africa. Numerous artists had been playing at a resort like place called Sun City which wasn't supposed to ban blacks and wasn't part of the government. Turns out it was a part of the government at the times and blacks weren't allowed to watch the concerts. The United Nations had placed a cultural boycott that included cultural, academic, and sports. Simon's argument was he did go to play did not break the UN resolution. Numerous artists had mixed feelings about Simon's decision to go there and bring back the music. Simon dismissed the criticism and remained obstinate with his decision to go. Leading S. African artists who had been associated with the anti-apartheid movement with several of them being barred from returning to S. Africa. Some of these artists supported Simon bringing artists from S. Africa to be on the album and be in his tour. In my opinion the ban from performing in S. Africa was an issue because he did bring S. African artists outside of the apartheid movement and he brought their music to the outside world. World music at that time was obscure and with his album and the tour people were able to see and hear S. African artists who they never would have been exposed to and they were actual human beings who just wanted to play, sing , and bring their music to the world. The album was able to expose their music and apartheid to the forefront which news broadcasts and other media had not been successful with the majority of people being unaware or ambivalent to what was happening in S. Africa. The album allowed artists to share their talents and the exposure allowed other S. African artists a chance to present their music and expose what the government of S. Africa had been oppressing. Numerous artists such as the group Stimela and their leader Ray Phriri and the infamous Ladysmith Black Mambazo who have won 5 Grammys and still record and tour. Ladysmith brought the history of the culture of Zulu to the forefront. As I stated before world music was very obscure and there wasn't a market in most countries. Most music stores in the US had no section for world music. The Graceland album changed this and people were able to be exposed to different cultures along with their artists. These obscure artists along with others around the world created a demand for artists in music, art, and cultures. These artists were in some ways put in limbo and oppressed them by other artists who lived outside of these countries. Most importantly people became more aware of governments that had created horrible conditions to all or some of their citizens. My criticism of Simon is I feel he did not give as much credit on the album to the artists who actually wrote some of the lyrics or contributions from the musicians. I had hoped this would have been rectified with his 25th anniversary of the album's release. The album is beautiful but more importantly it brought music to millions of people who never would have had access to world music.
8:57 what Paul said to the muggers did not matter. They were already focused on Him. This may very likely have been a set up from the guy at 7:32 to scare them away.
For anyone who wants to know the additional people on the cover were: Talk show host Michael Parkinson, singer Kenny Lynch, actors James Coburn and Christopher Lee, boxer John Conteh, and Member of Parliament Clement Freud. www.beatlesbible.com/people/paul-mccartney/albums/band-on-the-run/3/
There’s a difference between “stealing” someone’s culture for ones own gain and being inspired by someone’s culture and using it to show people about this lesser known culture That’s kinda why I think the whole cultural appropriation is dumb because 9 times out of 10 people aren’t doing anything but just showing an interest in that culture and respecting it
Ok, this was interesting, but just for fun... go to 5:47 and see how many misspellings of the word "patience" you can find. Don't know why that caught my eye, but once there I couldn't let it go!
"While Lennon used those words in his 1980 song “Beautiful Boy,” the phrase did not originate with him. A number of newspapers before that song's release published the phrase without attributing it to Lennon, and several sources that investigate the origin of quotes have attributed it to writer Alan Saunders." --Snopes
Am I the only one wondering why EMI had studios in Lagos and communist China? And Paul being protected so much as a Beatle when traveling made him pretty naive.
One cannot steal music from another country. Making music is free and universal and it has many contributors and influences and yes country’s have a sound. If someone borrows a cultural sound to include into the music they are trying to create, it’s not stealing and they should be honored and just listen and enjoy. Plagiarism for personal gain and popularity of course is a different thing.

@@cmeflywva i will never forget when that album was released and the controversies. It was a great album...still is.
The 1st song i ever liked was Pauls Man on the Rug when i was 4 in 74.

Christopher Lee was not Sauron. He was Saruman!
He is Darth Tyrannus
North America was stupid for not putting ' Let me roll it ' on the radio, my friends and I thought it was an awesome song.
Video idea- The Rutles
Yes James Coburn is on the cover
8:57 what Paul said to the muggers did not matter. They were already focused on Him. This may very likely have been a set up from the guy at 7:32 to scare them away.
For anyone who wants to know the additional people on the cover were: Talk show host Michael Parkinson, singer Kenny Lynch, actors James Coburn and Christopher Lee, boxer John Conteh, and Member of Parliament Clement Freud. www.beatlesbible.com/people/paul-mccartney/albums/band-on-the-run/3/
loved your bit about cultural appropriation, it was spot on!
There’s a difference between “stealing” someone’s culture for ones own gain and being inspired by someone’s culture and using it to show people about this lesser known culture
That’s kinda why I think the whole cultural appropriation is dumb because 9 times out of 10 people aren’t doing anything but just showing an interest in that culture and respecting it
I love you Paul McCartney
Brother how do I listen to your album if I don't have Spotify
Please do Ram.👏
Ok, this was interesting, but just for fun... go to 5:47 and see how many misspellings of the word "patience" you can find. Don't know why that caught my eye, but once there I couldn't let it go!
5:40 man...that hit hard
Paul’s best post Beatles album in my opinion
I’d have to agree. I liked McCartney and Ram was really good too, but BOTR is a masterpiece
I totally agree music is music.. it shouldn't have a culture or a ethnicity
"While Lennon used those words in his 1980 song “Beautiful Boy,” the phrase did not originate with him. A number of newspapers before that song's release published the phrase without attributing it to Lennon, and several sources that investigate the origin of quotes have attributed it to writer Alan Saunders." --Snopes
lave you vids
Am I the only one wondering why EMI had studios in Lagos and communist China? And Paul being protected so much as a Beatle when traveling made him pretty naive.
6:14 man is speaking straight facts
One cannot steal music from another country. Making music is free and universal and it has many contributors and influences and yes country’s have a sound. If someone borrows a cultural sound to include into the music they are trying to create, it’s not stealing and they should be honored and just listen and enjoy. Plagiarism for personal gain and popularity of course is a different thing.
