Quickly googled this (Plato quote): “Love is born into every human being; it calls back the halves of our original nature together; it tries to make one out of two and heal the wound of human nature. Each of us, then, is a 'matching half' of a human whole…and each of us is always seeking the half that matches him.” I think this is what Hugh meant, as in Will and Hannibal are each other's matching halves, they're identically different and complete each other, and like Mads said at one point, they are soulmates, no one else has the capacity of understanding them than they do with each other, and I find that so beautiful. It does go beyond sexuality, it's a "profound and inescapable love" (as Hugh has said), so I can understand what he means, he's definitely not saying "they were just really great pals". Hugh, you should find better wording LMAO

Hannibal loved Will but not sexually. More like obsessively. Will didn’t love Hannibal. He was just too far gone into his psyche to pull himself out. At least that’s what I see from all the dialogue and evidence in the show. Hannibal and Will are both portrayed as straight. They get their sexual gratification from women but they are emotionally and mentally entwined with each other and can’t get that emotional understanding and belonging from anyone else.
