I love how He doesn't compare the studio display to anything but an Overpriced XDR and 5 yr old LG. There are much better options out there in 4k. Also the webcam and speakers still definitely don't compare to dedicated devices. Especially the webcam. The stand options where height adjust bumps it up to 1999 and non user removable power cord have no reason. But it gets an edge being 5K, and APPLE design, but its a niche product and I wish Apple had a monitor providing value to the majority.

good comparison. One major thing I noticed: the viewing angle changes brightness and color on the new studio monitor. It seemed worse than the older 27 iMac panel I use daily, when I tried it at the apple store. Especially looking a little downward I saw colors and brightness change much more than I am used to. Also the black levels are lacking when comparing to the new laptops or the xdr panels. Then Best Buy had the Studio Display in stock out of nowhere on Friday, so I placed an in-store pickup with the quickness to compare them. First thing I noticed was that when using both monitors at the same time the LG's signal would cut out completely and never turn back on. I had to unplug the thunderbolt to reset the LG. The Studio Display was flawless (as you would guess). After a few hours I realized I would be keeping the Studio Display due to various reasons but the main reason was I needed something that will always be reliable. Great review. I wanted to add that dimming zones are not ideal for image editing on certain types of images where you have high contrast. The dimming zones can create artifacts (since dimming zones are larger than pixels). When I got my 12.9" M1 iPad Pro with mini LED, I thought it looked great for watching Dolby Vision movies, but I couldn't imagine doing serious photoshop retouching on it. I'm glad Apple went the route they did with the Studio Display (IPS). On another note, you could be correct the monitor's thickness is because it is (or was) destined to be an iMac Pro, but a lot of that thickness is taken up by the internal power supply. The external power supply on the (much thinner) 24" iMac is about the size of an Apple TV. This display would need a larger external power supply than that to allow 96W charging of a connected laptop...

The combination of the display quality, brightness, terrific speakers, 10Gbps-capable USB-C ports and solid construction won me over to the Studio Display from a very cheap 28-in 4k display that was affected by interference from any operating webcam. As the existin 4k monitor used a VESA mount, I chose that option with my Studio Display. I generally use a boom-mounted USB condenser mic which my target audience on Zoom prefers over the built-in mic array. To get around the limitations of the webcam I use Continuity Camera with my iPhone 13 Mini and the Belkin iPhone Mount. Another viable option is Iriun Webcam (iOS and Android) with a phone on a tripod. Iriun Webcam also works with iPads.

I think they hit the wrong sweet spot and bundled some features in there that most studio pros don't care about, all to hit a higher price point. Extra processor with webcam? Nice speakers? Most will already have better speakers in the studio, like reference monitors. I know I do. 2:17 most monitors these days come with matte coating pre installed so i think you meant lower contrast + less reflectivity. Glossy = more reflectivity and better contrast. Look up Dave2D's eve spectrum monitor video if you want to see the comparison. Yes that means apple charges extra couple hundred bucks to add matte coating while the entire monitor industry does it out of the box. Meanwhile, PC gamers would love more glossy monitor options but some reason, they decided to completely get rid of it but hopefully it'll come back. There are a few glossy office monitors though but not many.

    • @brightboxstudio

What Apple does is not a coating, and not as coarse as a traditional matte treatment. They etch the glass surface itself, to break up reflections without introducing the image quality compromises of matte plastic or an additional layer of coating. That special process is why it costs so much. But the cost of adding it is more than I would pay.

      @brightboxstudio 2 года назад +1

@@loldatfunny There are major differences between a matte screen, a glossy screen, a glossy screen with nano-texture etching, and a glossy screen with anti-glare coatings. They cannot all be lumped together, because the end result is not always the same. Matte loses the most contrast, glossy has the most glare. Glossy with etching is effective, but too expensive. Glossy with the proper coatings is a good compromise between contrast and glare, and the coatings are NOT all equal. I have held up different phones against glossy laptop screens with different coatings, and some are much better than others.

I myself don’t have the equipment to test the Studio Display’s port wattage, but I can make a logical deduction. Bear with me here.
We know that Apple says, with the Studio Display, “you can even fast charge a 14 inch MacBook Pro”. Now, from various sources, I’ve found that the 14 inch MacBook Pro draws 73 W in order to fast charge. That means the Studio Display can deliver at least 73 W of power. However, Apple doesn’t say that it’s capable of fast charging a 16 inch MacBook Pro, and those draw more power (and come with a 140 W adapter instead of a 96 W). So we can assume it can’t deliver much more power than that.

Hi there, I've been looking forever for the original file that Apple supplies in "/System/Library/Desktop Pictures". I keep finding converted PNG or JPEG images that are high resolution, but not the original HEIC file. If anyone with a Pro Display XDR wants to bless us with the OG file right out of the library folder (maybe zipped so it doesn't convert on Reddit), that would be amazing!

Awesome comparison Max!! I wish Apple would elaborate more on the specs of the ASD. Been looking for monitors to go with my Late 2021 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max for over to weeks..... no luck. Everything I've looked at has a mixed bag of spec's for my needs for FCPX. The ASD is looking more & more desirable everyday. Only thing is if a jump on it, Apple will come out with something nicer in the spring.... As always, Thank You for all your hard work!! 👍😊

I saw something about someone suspecting that Apple may make an external GPU. If so, I would expect that to be put inside this monitor. It would basically allow future iPhones or iPads to be your laptop and the “dock” to hook you into heavy duty power as needed.

I'm really not a fan of Apple's trend toward making speakers that are more bass heavy and quieter. I will take natural clarity and overall power over boomy bass any day (bass seems like a crutch to cover up bad sound). My 27" iMac had nearly perfect sound for a built in setup.
Has anybody compared the loudness to a 27" iMac? Like if an iMac was 10/10, how loud is the Studio display?
Btw, that webcam is terrible for a monitor of this price with a built in a13 CPU in it! Apparently Apple says they are aware and are working on a firmware fix. Should be interesting. Also should be doable UNLESS they put a really crappy sensor/lens in it, in which case no amount of software tweaking will fix it.

I'm just disappointed about the contrast ratio of this display. I wish further development could go into the neglected 5K panel, as 1040:1 is just really lame by today's standards. As I write this, I'm using an Apple display made over a decade ago -- and it has a contrast ratio of 700:1.

Didn’t know about the data speed limitations of the XDR. That was really useful!
I really liked the larger size of the XDR, but with data speed and built-in speakers, the studio display seems like a much better monitor for almost everyone since we aren’t looking at HDR content most of the time we are using the computer. It’s not like the web or any software/app interfaces use it.
I like the accurate colors and image quality and the sharpness, but realistically, I could also just be fine with 4k 32” probably and less accurate colors and less color depth.

I'm REALLY needing a new iPad but I just have this feeling like they're going to update the iPad Pro this year and it might make more sense to wait for the update and then pick up a cheaper last gen iPad Pro or cough up the dough for the newer model if the upgrades seem worth it. What else is new in 2022, just a bunch of winey babies complaining about the price of this new monitor. The "my $300 4K monitor is BETTER" crowd simply don't get it.... You need a 5K panel to properly scale 2560x1400 x4 to get "retina" clarity. Too many people say "eh, I don't care..." but I have bad eyes and NEED the clarity and I can't imagine how somebody wouldn't notice the difference. It's a HUGE difference if you ask me. So the 4K is only an option if you're running at 4K not in HiDPI mode or scaling at 1080. Yes, the LG is cheaper but actually looks like crap side by side, not to mention the ghosting and cheap plastic and wobbly stand. Of course though, the 5K iMac was probably the best bang/buck that Apple ever produced, but for someone like myself who uses Mac Pros (or Mac Studio) this new Studio Display is legitimately the BEST option, PERIOD!

    • @adriancandelario2902
