    IMO, the biggest drawback of this display is the lack of an OSD. The OSD provides a platform agnostic experience, and I do see this being the biggest reason why many people avoid it, even if they do have a bias towards the Mac platform, but do occasionally use non-bootcamp Windows. And to a certain "Ryan Rife" when he said "you're comparing it to something that is nearly 10x more expensive" (8:15) That's what Apple started by comparing it to a display that is $43k

    Great review. I am very much in agreement with your take on this display. I am a Dolby certified colorist and I have color graded more than 25 feature films, tv series and this monitor is for me. Over the past year I have bought and returned two monitors from ASUS. I love what ASUS is trying to do, but so many issues and caveats. The latest unit with a built in probe, was not automatic like their video shows and still requires connection to a computer and their color tool (software) which we could only get for Mac in German language. So many other issues. We tried LG and Dell and they all fell short. The Dell at 1000 nits, which I need for HDR, looked awful in Rec 709 mode, so then you need another monitor. I cannot afford the Sony HDR reference monitor at $43,000, so I needed to find a solution and the Apple XDR monitor ended up being that solution as I already own the M2 MacPro Tower. I purchased the Nano glass to reduce reflections. The one thing I can say is that the off axis viewing is not as good as I would like. Primarily I am straight on but I do like how OLED displays in these situations.

    I do not process photos or videos. I work with Forex futures markets and the like. I use technical (graphical) analysis. I often use up to 12 pairs of lines with overlapping lines (up to 24 lines). In the RGB space, when programming, I am limited to 256 brightness levels. In regular LG monitors, I see almost no difference on small lines within 220-256, and within 0-20, dark colors are almost indistinguishable from the black background, which is actually gray. I hope that a wide range of contrast and brightness will correct my situation. A billion / 256 gives a big difference between adjacent lines, as it seems to me, and a much greater effect will be given by increased contrast.

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne Месяц назад

      @@greggoodenough5607 The glossy, "glassy", flashing look, you love so much, is being created by the glass on the screen. You need ambient light, for it to have an effect. That's the simple characteristics of glass.
      So, if you sit in a very dark room, that effect will more or less disappear. You can check by sitting in front of your monitor, in your working position, when the monitor is turned off. All those reflections you will see - the mirror effect that's unavoidable, will be added to what you see on the monitor when the computer is turned on.
      These reflections are unwanted, on professional monitors, so you'll never see them there, or maybe only for pro color grading monitors, where the color grader sits in a very dark room anyway. And normal people would probably not want these as well, and/or they add unnecessary costs, to the display.
      If you do my test and place yourself in front of your screen for 10 minutes in daylight, with the computer turned off, and thoroughly study the reflections, you will never again be able to un-see them, when the monitor is on.

    Very good review, thanks. Not sure that understand you right - you said 30% of what apple locks you in when doing HDR. This means 500nits (~30% from 1600) or 30 from 500 (which very low then). When then this 1600 is used? In normal use when watching HDR content only?

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne 7 месяцев назад

      You heard correct. He said to lower to 30% brightness, to get rid of blooming. He also said, that would be the setting for HDR color grading.
      This is simply not true! When selecting the DCI-P3 mode, the screen goes much brighter, and blooming will occur. There's no difference to what the XDR does, compared to other IPS panels. It has the dame pros and cons, as any other IPS panel, in that price range.

  • @antenedilbert7191

    Good that you brought this. We in Cinema use Eizo hdr10+ monitors that cost 35000$ or 25 lakhs after tax and duty in India. Apple's XDR CAN'T EVEN get closer to color and brightness. But they had balls to compare that with high end reference monitors. But hey they're disrupting the market really good. Now LG has to down the cost with hdr ultrawides too. And Eizo will also think this around. Man but I'm still expecting you to kill this Mac pro and xdr with threadripper rig and Nvidia rtx 6000 or 8000 that costs way less. We'll I've the knowledge but the brands don't sponsor me to do this but you can man. Please try and do it.

    • @atisbasak
      @atisbasak 3 года назад

      The Threadripper CPUs are more powerful but they support only 256GB of RAM. To get upto 2TB of RAM, you need Threadripper Pro CPUs. Plus the Radeon Pro Vega II Duo blows away the Quadro RTX 8000 for lower price. It costs $5200 which is less than the $5500 that the Quadro costs.

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  5 лет назад +1

      It’s amazing at any brightness in normal lighting conditions but if you are working in pitch black or a very dim room it’s also amazing In any scenario at 50% brightness or below (and Apple locks you in at a dimmer amount when grading just like you should be at with any monitor) and you can even use it at 100% for most scenes or things as well (if you want to burn your retinas lol) But IF you have the brightness up and if you have very small spots that are white on a pure black background especially if it’s a sharp line or spot you can have some glowing as I showed but not as bad as many others did with inaccurately taken photos.

      The real tipping point is destination. There really aren't that many HDR compatible delivery methods yet (especially ones that have consistent support across all, or even most HDR displays). It'd be amazing for grading HDR content intended for the web, and especially mobile viewing since iPhones & iPads + RUclips is probably the most ubiquitous method out there right now. If you want to grade for Netflix, Cable or terrestrial Broadcast, I don't think the folks you'd be working with would consider the Pro Display XDR to be an acceptable solution... At least not yet.

  • @aldenhoot9967
    @aldenhoot9967 5 лет назад

    This was an absolutely fantastic review! You covered virtually everything I wanted to hear about with one semi-exception. You show on screen the Forbes interview with Grant Petty near the end when you're saying "On the other hand, if this display can perform closer to a now $22 one [...] and programs like Davinci Resolve, for the first time ever, are confident enough to allow it to be used without the external hardware"
    That IS still an *if* though isn't it? Have Apple/Black Magic/Adobe come out and said they think it's okay to relax their previous recommendation that all critical judgements be based off of a display connected to a dedicated video I/O box? I mean if you're only ever delivering HDR to RUclips, what would it matter whether it's not *quite* all there? But for folks trying to deliver to the festival circuit or other outlets, it doesn't sound like there's been much movement to embrace the PD XDR... That said, it would be super cool if Apple were to finally bridge this gap, I'm just waiting to hear from someone in the industry that they think it's actually viable... not going to hold my breath though.

If I understand you correctly, the Pro Display XDR will default at about 500 nits and will to get brighter unless you're working with HDR. If that's true, I have zero interest and will stick with my 5K displays, as all the XDR is for normal users is a larger 4K or 5K display.
    6K didn't blow me away like I thought it would---the display just looked like the 32 inch version of the 5K iMac or LG---just a larger retina display. I can see it being useful if you work with HDR or need to edit video in 4K, but for normal users? The XDR seems to be just a larger Retina display. :(

      Your exactly right. The PPI is exactly the same as the 5K they just compensated for the extra size and the brightness is also the same since I guess that’s the proper amount for SDR and they think it’s good for normal uses. As I said in the video personally I wish they let it get brighter. Check out or comparison with the 5K. 6K Pro Display XDR vs 5K LG Ultrafine - Worth $4700 More? ruclips.net/video/kLKOOFaI0gY/видео.html

      @@MaxTechOfficial Yeah, this is a no go for me. Thanks for explaining it---again, I was super disappointed when I got up to the machine and realized it was basically the same as my LG 4K and 5K--just larger.

    But looking at the price....
    I can get a pretty decked out Mac Pro and 2 of Apples displays.
    Or almost a Tesla truck.
    But I’m still over here with $20 in my pocket so I can’t say much 🙃

      There are actually four 8K monitors, one from Dell, two from Viewsonic and one from Philips in 2021. The Pro Display XDR is one of the highest if not the highest resolution monitors on the market. 8K monitors are pretty niche even in 2021 and most pro monitors are 4K or 5K.

    *Max, I appreciate your reviews and opinion immensely, and I always check you out, but I am not sure where you are going in this review ? You're doing so much equivocating that I got lost in it. For $6,000.00 USD, most professionals will expect complete accuracy here. For the amount this should be doable shouldn't it ? In Canada we're looking at $8,798.00 CAD with the Nano Textured Glass and the magnetic metal stand. This is allot of cash for a computer monitor.*

      Most professional monitors are far more expensive costs tens of thousands of dollars. The Pro Display XDR is a bargain compared to other professional monitors.

    The display delivers more accurate colors than professional OLED monitors. I'm gonna get one to watch movies and photo editing. Matt displays are terrible.

  • @akyhne
    @akyhne Месяц назад

    7:15 Most monitors use 350 nits or less, because it's not needed for normal consumption. 600 nits SDR is a total overkill.
    Your videos are only in Rec.709, so you would want no more than 100-120 nits to color grade those videos of yours.
    8:50 Defititely a jack of all trades, master of none, and why it's heavily overpriced.
    9:30 A HDR grading monitor doesn't have to provide 1000 nits brightness, at full screen. Studies have shown, that of all HDR monies made, it's only a few percentages of the screen that lit up, in various bright scenes.
    For SDR, any monitor will do, as long as the display is color accurate.
    10:00 Yeah, the build quality is definetely lower on the Asus, concidering the Asus weigh more. Wait what?! Maybe it's the other way around!
    The Asus is thick, because it's a sturdy monitor, meant to last, meant to get rid of heat well, meant to handle more sophisticated control.
    The 2½ times less pixels is meaningless. It's a display, meant for professional work. It's not a toy, like the XDR.
    10:30 "Way better materials". Like what? A display like the Asus is built up on a metal frame, encapsuled in a plastic frame. While Apple did it in one go, making the frame the bearing part as well. This is a design choice, and by design I don't mean "nice". It cuts down on complexity, but also adds cost. And yes, the XDR looks more like an office monitor, whereas the Asus looks industry. The Asus is meant to be (ab)used.
    10:45 "It doens't need to look so nice and pretty". Just clarifying, that he/you was talking about the monitor chassis/frame, not the display and quality of the image.
    13:35 You have no clue what you are talking about here. Any display, even the cheapest $100 displays, have several color profiles. More expensive displays have more color profiles., meant for professional work. The XDR definetely needed dedicated hardware, to be color accurate. The Apple OS cannot compensate for this. You need a clean feed to the display, and that's only possible via a breakout box, that bypasses the internal GPU in the computer.
    And yeah, you could say, it gets closer, but it's not closer than any other good monitor. And you can get better displays for a lot less.
    13:49 Read the article. It says hardly anything about the XDR being good enough for professional work. In fact, the article you point to, talks about the stationary Apple tower, nut the XDR.

  • @ModeratelyInsane
    @ModeratelyInsane 5 лет назад

    Tempted to get the XDR to replace my old Thunderbolt display. I only do coding, so the pro features would go to waste, but the design and quality of this thing is bar none. But it's still a hard pill to swallow due to the price. If there was a lower spec 5K version of the Pro display, I would order in a heartbeat.

      *If* you've got the $ there are worse things to buy. Getting up to, or staying at what Apple calls "Retina Display" resolutions (varies by size of screen and viewing distance) will have a significant impact in your speed and accuracy while reading, so imagine there could be some actual benefit even if most of what you do is staring at text all day.

    Blah , blah , blah, blah , blah as always about nothing! Where is the color Gamut Test , screen uniformity test and other tests that are a must for any professional monitor? 6k means nothing since we don’t even have Consumer 6k Video cameras on the market yet!
    $1000-$1200 professional monitors by Asus, Benq and Dell are the best 4K monitors and perfectly enough for most users.
