You mean large discs, right?
@@real_armadillo I think he means that he has the balls to defame Apple.
@@jeremyw.5729 it's not defaming, he reported numbers and proper comparison. defaming is when you spread bulls*** without proof
Sometimes the world doesn't need another hero, sometimes what it needs is a tv reviewer and a professional calibrator.
To be more specific, his name is Vincent Teoh and not something with Quantum.
The hero our standard mode 9000K out-of-the-box displays deserve...
I read last part in Vincent's accent without meaning to.
Queen laqueefa your user name rocks..
LMAO Brilliant!
As a broadcast engineer contracted to NBC Olympics since 2008, I have been using the 26 and 30” Sony OLED reference monitors for many years for quality control of incoming HD-SDI streams via undersea cable from the host country. We have many other displays at our disposal for various purposes involved with the job of monitoring finished programs pre-broadcast. The Sony image stands head and shoulders above all of them. Sitting typically 1-2’ away, the color accuracy is breathtaking, the picture seeming to come from somewhere behind and in front of the actual panel surface.
The difference to other 4K and above displays is not what you might expect. It is not a dramatic picture at all, but rather like looking through a crystal clear window at the actual scene being shot, but with perfect vision. No saturation hyping, no contrast exaggeration, just what is actually there, rendered visually perfect. I’m a music mixer by profession and vividly remember, many years later, hearing that ultra-rare perfection from Meyer 834 professional monitors. It’s a sound profile frozen in my mind by which all other speakers are compared. The Sony OLED reference monitor has set that same unforgettable standard for me visually.
what about Japanese reference monitors (sound), are there any that can compare let alone exceed what you've witnessed?
Cool, so you may had monitored streams (curling, sailing, surfing) I helped to produce.
Ronny Burkersroda Hi Ronny. Started in 8H, now in Stamford. Are you part of the At-home team?
Nuclear Armament I’m not aware of any Japanese manufacturer making studio reference monitors. And please note I’m not referring to so-called audiophile equipment. Accuracy is #1 in the professional market but way down the list in the marketing-driven audiophile business. In addition to JBL, Westlake, and Meyer, there are a number of small companies making systems for studios that I have been very impressed with but not sufficiently to drop the cost of a car on them.
@@artysanmobile I see, thanks for the response.
I came as an Apple fan ready for this guy to talk up the Pro Display. And I left completely satisfied with my opinion having changed entirely from an insanely professional and unbiased video. +1 sub based on this video alone.
Yeah... He made it so easy to SEE the difference
I came after watching Peter Paul Chato mention the Pro Display XDR getting destroyed in what must have been this review. It helped that it was recommended by the almighty algorithm, of course. Somehow, I always get some satisfaction out of seeing Apple's marketing debunked these days. It's probably because I quit the Mac many moons ago in favor of Linux and cheaper yet superior PC hardware. All that remains now is for reviewers to tear apart the silly price-to-performance ratio of the new Mac Pro, especially in light of the competition from AMD.

Finally, the final word from someone in the target market.
Konka Bass it’s probably not their real target market. It’s probably more for people like tech RUclips’s, media companies and other content creators who need quality displays and but aren’t going to spend $50,000. I’d be willing to bet they’re just trying to align their product with this level of equipment for marketing purposes
@@Premium-Content but you can buy lg c9 and it will be better than that 50000$ after calibration. Well, as it will be under 0.5 deltaE so immposible to tell.
I don’t think he makes the target market. He is someone who actually needs the Sony oled and like his peers in the industry actually can make use of the benefits that provides.
I think this is apples way to create a better cinema display but aimed at the indie or small creator studio ( people who cannot afford 100k+ systems and network renderers). It also helps for people in audio who need the resolution to see the whole project and all the instruments put without needing to sacrifice on the size/ need to scroll. It’s a halo product for the “pro-enthusiast” but not professionals or the enthusiasts or anyone else in general.
Amal Joe Abraham content creator is such a lousy term
Is he really the target market though? I think the target market is the prosumer that can stretch their wallet just enough to get this and convince themselves that they have a professional grade monitor and then not really need it in the first place.

This is the exact review I wanted to see. No one else is doing any serious testing with this monitor. Massive thank you!
the humor in this is low-key gangster
As soon as the XDR display was announced I wanted to see this video. The contrast claims were definitely the most bold and I had to see whether or not they could meet them. They uh...certainly did not.
Yeah that piece of marketing is really dishonest. That's like those monitors back in the day which had "infinite to 1 contrast". Technically true, but only because you can turn the monitor off.. (in this case, turn local dimming zones off)
speedyink yeah I hate their marketing on this thing. From the stupid comparisons, to the absolutely atrocious stand. It’s all such crappy marketing.
But as a $5k display, it really does hold its own. If they simply toned it down, and said, “yeah this is a color accurate display, that has a lot of features for creative professionals.” It’s great for photography and editing, and could even work as a great low price option for budding film studios.
But they couldn’t just be humble and say what it really is. They had to go and compare it to the top dogs, and try to justify that unbelievable comparison.. smh
Grizabella the stand isn’t atrocious, it’s just expensive.
Grizabella Had Apple just sold the Monitor and the Stand together for $5 999 and not compare it to actual professional reference monitors, I bet most people would have had a much more positive opinion on the device. It’s because Apple treats its customers like they’re total idiots that makes a lot of people unhappy. Granted, most people are idiots when it comes to technology, but a different apporach would be appreciated. They could have said ”look, this is a great monitor. It’s not like the 50k dollar ones that studios use, but it’s not that far off for regular users. If you’re rich, want a great monitor for your office and happen to own a Mac computer, this is for you!”, but that wouldn’t make Apple a trillion dollar company would it?
OneDerscore One I meant more that the marketing of the display stand was atrocious. The stand itself is quite nice, my bad

Sweet. Finally a RUclipsr who speaks a language that I can understand. And I can understand because it's about real-world things. I've been besieged by poseurs for so long that I almost forgot what an honest and competent review was. Yes, a "pro" monitor without even one SDI input does place the Apple monitor squarely in the overpriced consumer goods realm. I suppose that a successful divorce lawyer can afford to pay a housekeeper to maintain the back of the thing.
At 32" it's about the size where UHD (3.75K) monitors begin, which begs the question "why 6K?" There is no "6K" UHD standard, and it's even shy of a full 6K pixels wide by DCI standards. Color gamut is equally baffling. Presuming it does 100% Rec.709 and at ninety-something P3, it's right in the ballpark of a lot of 30+ inch monitors that are self-calibrating. When you add the cost of the mandatory Apple computer, the Apple monitor is hideously overpriced. I haven't personally had the pleasure or the need to use a $40,000 Sony monitor, which is probably overkill for ATSC broadcasting. I have no doubt that it's worth every penny for productions destined for distribution at better than 8-bit 4:2:0. With a full 4096 horizontal pixels and native support for several log gamma functions and P3 color space, at least it walks the walk for movies.
Apple always had unconventional resolutions for basically all of their devices
*Most unbiased apple review ever seen.*
If you have "local dimming zones", you can't call your display "pro"
Simon48 I find this dynamic backlight stuff so annoying. Even on cheap tvs it should be possible to turn it off, but often isn’t. I care more about consistency than absolute contrast numbers. My eyes can adjust to whatever brightness floor and ceiling you give me, but I’m always going to be startled by the backlight adjustments.
We can all can agree that Apple has massacred the term “PRO" with its marketing...
@@enneff I can't. Kinda missed my old CRT when I moved to LCD. Stopped noticing for a bit but then I got my first smartphone and it had an OLED panel. Bought a display with FALD and never looked back. It's not perfect but by far an improvement. But it's not a real mastering display if it doesn't have double layered LCDs anymore.
Having used a $40k+ Sony crt reference monitor and compared it side by side with their second gen OLED ref monitor, the crt looked like crap. Any light, not even direct, would ruin the contrast on the crt but unnoticeable on the OLED and its special surface treatment. And this was before HDR.
A beautifully looking display for the offices of divorce lawyers that is 😊
I wasn't sure if he said divorce lawyer or "divorced lawyer" which also kind of makes sense :D
I had also assumed a dual layer LCD for this. That would have justified the price. What a rip off.
Also the "divorced lawyer" bit killed me.
divorce lawyer, not divorced lawyer

interrobangings I wouldn’t judge a profession like that. They’re just lawyers who specialize on certain legal situations. Marriage is a significant legal contract so it requires specialists like any other thing. Do you call trauma surgeons scumbags because they make money by saving people’s lives for 300k a year? They should do it for free because it’s only very unhappy people that need those services, right?

I must say I'm a bit surprised. Reading the specs at first I assumed it was a panel made by Panasonic since they already offer a dual layer IPS panel with a similar 1000000:1 contrast ratio. Later being told the Apple panel was made by LG still assumed a similar technology. But it being a normal be it very good IPS panel with a basic system for local dimming explains why they are able to keep the price lower than expected. It's no more than a $2000 monitor made with fancy materials and sold for three times the price.

I was noticing your hand losing hue when it went over the screen . Any reason for that in particular?
Most likely a mask was applied in post to change the skin tones and that mask could not be over the screen because it would affect the colors of the screen whenever skintone-alike colors would appear on the display, therefore the hand changes color at the edge of the screen. (They were to lazy to track the hand or they simply did not notice it)
..or a grading mask was put over the screen and this mask applies to the hand when it's overlaying the screen.
Carl Jirestedt ah do you mean to say to keep the colors on the rest of the image constant ?
The thing was that I am not a pixel peeper by any measure but every time that hand showed up over the screen something just felt off. It wasn’t until later I realized the hand was the one melting my brain.

Awesome review just what I really wanted to know about the display. So many wanabe's on youtube pretending they are reviewing stuff but in reality they dont have the knowledge to do so. And yes first thing they usually say is the max brightness level which is meaningless without the blacklevel. Contrast is much more important. Colors and perfect reproduction on a pixel level as well. Now I know that for me it's not worth upgrading to any of the new monitors they are ridiculously expensive and cant match my Quato hardware calibrating display in many aspects.
A good review saves viewers time, which is exactly what this video does. Thanks!

Could never afford the XDR display but I was interested to hear what an actual professional's take was. Fascinating to hear it's inadequate for serious colour grading - and it begs the question who this is actually for? Eloquent. Professional. Fascinating. Succinct. Accurate. In context and entertaining. A perfect review, in a world where so many reviews are just opinions and click bait. Kudos to you.
Regarding the item itself, would you consider (please) a similar side-by-side comparison to, say, a $2,000 Eizo "reference" monitor? It would seem likely that the XDR would outperform what is an industry standard for those amongst us who DO a lot of grading, but will probably NEVER be able to justify a $35,000 monitor, however good it is. I guess what I'm asking is: is the XDR worth the extra $3k over an Eizo for documentary, SDR, day-to-day work. Or not. Because I could see myself justifying the extra if it is, but not $30,000 extra...
Also, the fact that the XDR ties the user to Mac products - which means a MacPro, if one has a hope to be processing 6k RAW multicam source material in Resolve, for instance - means that it might actually be cheaper to buy a SONY monitor, and buils a kickass PC, for a fraction of the price of a juiced Mac Pro...
Why is it so difficult.
Why is the Resolve Full color panel TEN TIMES more expensive than the Mini?
As an independent colorist, these things plague me. And as my client is NOT JJ Abrams, most directors can;'t tell the difference between a well-calibrated iMac Retina display and the iPhones they review proghress on anyway. If one is a scope Master, then I think a lot of these issues become less important.
Thoughts anyone?

Please review the Cheaper 4K Asus ProArt U series with mini LED and HDR, supposedly it is much better than the XDR, except in resolution, and peak brightness, and it works with all computers mac and pc without scaling issues.
A review from a real professional
"We had to save budget for the stand"... thanks Apple!
This was both informative and hilarious.
I love that you have a Technicolor cap, yet I’ve worked directly with Technicolor for a decade, and I don’t have one.
I worked for a contracted security company at the old Specialty Records/WEA/Cinram plant they had for a while.
Always use a bag. 🤣🤣
Love you Vincent.
Ohh god, that 12 inch joke came out of nowhere and completely caught me off guard after basically the whole video being very professional.
Which is a compliment.
I don't know if it's a problem with my tv but your face with HDR it's very Red. With the same settings and other hdr content i don't have this problem.
Same here! His face is too red in hdr. I don't have this issue on another hdr content
Its called asian glow how dare u
Same, very red on Sony A8F and his hands are almost green when held up in front of the monitor.
If anyone is looking for the stand used in this video: this is Hemudu HT05B-001. Costs around 20 bucks. Well, that's a great deal for 5 grand display.
And yes, I bought this one for the XDR.
