- Welcome!
Today's video is a reaction/analysis of Tom Jones' 1967 performance of the song "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". The vocal nerd in me lives for songs in this style that are done right. Join me to find out exactly what Tom Jones does to pull off one heck of a performance that is as moving as it is vocally impressive.

With performances like this throughout his extensive career, is it any wonder that Sir Tom is knighted for his contributions to music?
Dude is a legend! Drove the ladies wild, including my mom 😀
…and at 80 years old he can still belt out this song
None whatsoever. 🎯
Hello Julia. You should react to The Warning, a band of three sisters from Mexico. Enter their rock world. Here an example: ruclips.net/video/E62SVvLw9FI/видео.html
Julia, have you ever seen TJ sing 'Baby please make a change' with Hugh Laurie at the piano? If you haven't, please do. No need for a reaction, you just *have* to see it ....... ruclips.net/video/fMSxFcmiNGc/видео.html
AS A JUDGE on "The Voice UK" in 2019, he was the only chair-turn for a kid named Peter Donegan who's DAD wrote that song for Tom and toured with him in the early years. They ended up singing that song together LIVE and impromptu during the audition... PRICELESS reunion with the son, and one of those "Full Circle" moments. it's on YT
I've seen this audition, it was great!!!
Yeah, me too! Also saw that audition. Even in his 80's, he's still got it. And Peter had a great audition.
Here ya go! ruclips.net/video/ySopatr6AoE/видео.html
Ohmygod... 🥺
I've seen the video but didn't know that. Amazing stuff
My dad used to work on a milk round (delivering milk in the early hours to homes) as a pre-teen with Tom, in the village of Tonteg, near Pontypridd, South Wales. They both sang at local miner's and workingmens clubs in their teens, as did many people back then (50's and 60's). Tom went on to international fame, my dad not so much.
Amazing
Tom used to live in Shepperton when i was a kid and my mate used to do a paper round and delivered the Sun and 20 No 6 (cigarettes) to his house each morning. Everyone who met Tom said he was a really good guy, he moved up to St.Georges Hill in Weybridge then Las Vegas the rest is history. Top bloke and great singer and wonderful showman.
What a great story, Tony!!
I remember Tom talking about how growing up there were many great powerful Welch singers. He was the one who had the international success.
The greatest voice of the world. And still performing at 80 years old and not sounding less impressive... Amazing.
The heartbreaker from Wales.
The greatest voice indeed.
I know he’s spent his entire career simply blowing us away. Simply one of the GOAT’s
Sir Jones is the GOAT. No doubt about it. I remember watching his weekly show while my Mother was not-so-quietly swooning in her chair.
Sir, I still think Elvis is the Goat BUT Tom Jones is simply fantastic. Good day
@@rickkimbley8991 Elvis had the hype of the US industry and the movies , even though most of what was been dished up was absolute crap . Elvis was great i loved him but lets be real here his voice had gone long before he died aged 41 , Tom on the other hand has carried on singing and hitting the notes faultlessly all these years and hes 81 and still going . I think that says HE IS THE GOAT not Elvis also even Elvis said Tom had a better voice and i have to agree .
Nice to see someone young appreciate something that didn't happen in the last five minutes. We all appreciate you, Julia.
Sir Tom Jones was 26 or 27 years old when he did this song. He is now 82 and is a judge on The Voice and still tours with that magnificent voice
Sir Tom Jones, for me the greatest ever male vocalist, his power, range, tone and emotion were second to none. Even now in his 80’s he’s still amazing!
He painted a masterpiece with his voice.
I'm reading all these comments regarding Sir Tom being a judge on the "Voice UK"...for you younger folks who don't remember, Sir Tom's nickname was "The Voice", decades before any such TV shows existed. Ah, for the days of pure talent. Excellent analysis as always, Julia. I think I saw you swoon a bit (lol!)...enjoyed!
Pipes! He’s so loud at the end you can hear the room echo! Amazing 🤩
Recorded 1967. No autotune just powerful voice. In his 80s now and Sir Tom can still belt out this song!
Best reaction to this song that I've heard by far. She stayed with his vocal ability and the performance itself. The song and the reaction were a pleasure to listen to.
Tom Jones is from Wales. He was quite the heart throb in his heyday. Young (and not so young) women in the audience would literally lose their minds, start throwing their panties on the stage, their hotel room keys.... it was a sight to behold. He still has that power 50 years later as you can testify. Getting weak in the knees? Great song, Great looks, Great sound, Great performer. Sex appeal. Enough to make you swoon. He watches RUclips and has thanked others for their reaction. Maybe he might see yours as well. I enjoyed your reaction more than most.
Women still throw their panties today. They are just a little bigger.
I heard another RUclips reactor describe Tom Jones as a "Baritone Cannon". Couldn't have come up with a better description of him no matter how hard I tried. Add in the fact that this was before decent mikes and auto-tune, and you simply have to respect the talent in this man. I love how you never hear him take a breath until he wants you to, because he uses it to add emotion to the performance.
And the only compressor and dynamic "technology" is how or you want the microphone distances when singing. At the time of the devastation, the artist had to master it. T Jones old video recordings it hops easily.
Great comment about his breathing and how he uses it. What an artist.
He wasn't a baritone. He could hit the Tenor High C when he was younger, before dropping one semi-tone early in his career to B4. He spent most of his career as a High-baritone, and was consistently able to sing around F4-A4 which is quite high for a man( I'm a baritone, my high notes that I can sing all day are between D4-F4, I max out at A4. I really struggle to even hit his notes without feeling tension after 2 or 3 of his songs). I believe by listening to his later songs that he is almost certainly now a Baritone, I'd be very surprised if he could hit the Bb4 or A4. He has remarked that his voice on the lower end has become richer/ lower probably being able to touch E2. Even as I listen to this song he never struck me as a garden variety baritone at that point in his career, he had a lighter tone to his voice, but you are correct the dude was a cannon, and to my understanding un-trained. The dude was gifted, period
Back in the days when singers actually could sing for real. Amazing vocals from mr Jones.
You're right, chris stapleton totally relies on technology.
Like Adele?
Completely awesome. My Dad lived near him in Wales and there's definitely something magical about the Welsh! Every artist out there today wants to sit down and watch this masterclass in powerful emotive singing, charismatic performance and true stagecraft.
Wales is the land of Myrddin/Merlin the magician, of dragons (as on the flag),, the Mabinogi and Arthurian tales, even Rupert Bear and the flopsy bunnies lived in Wales, and Harry Potter- i seem to remember- flew over Abergavenny (Rowling was brought up by the Welsh border), Alice of Alice in Wonderland would holiday in Wales, Tolkien loved the ancient language, picked Welsh names for Lord of the Rings, CS Lewis, who wote the Narnia tales, was of Welsh parentage, comedian Tommy Cooper, born in Caerphilly, performed magic- to comic effect, Roald Dahl was born in Wales ...the blue stones at Stonehenge with magical healing properties were amazingly transported- or moved themselves- a long distance from the Preseli hills in Wales...the Llangernyw yew tree, which has an ancient spirit, is thousands of years old. I do feel magic in Wales.
I have to agree with you, there is something magical about the Welsh and music. My father and his family were from Wales, and I grew up listening to Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, and Engelbert Humperdinck, as well as other Welsh and British artists. I have seen performances by Sir Tom and Dame Shirley in their 80's, and the power and beauty of their voices still gave me goosebumps.
The truly amazing thing about this performance is that he had so much left to give! This was just a walk in the park from him.
Tom has just released a new album 'Surrounded By Time' at 81 yrs old and is touring behind it! (Well, actually he has moved his 2020 concert dates to 2021)
Used to watch him every week back in the 60s At 82 he is still preforming probably one of the best singers of all time can sing anything.
Once I fell in love with Tom and his voice I was lost forever that was in 1965 and I still love him so much I'm so proud he's a fellow Welsh man and gone from strength to strength
Without a doubt one of the great crooners. We had Tom's Greatest Hits on vinyl back in 1977. Ah, the olden days. Cheers Julia.
He wasn't a crooner. Most crooners stay within a certain octave and sing with a constant degree of softness e.g Dean Martin. Tom Jones smashed his way through 3 octaves nightly and whilst he may have had a softer side to his voice, he was renown for his power and range
@@shanemartin8904 Fun fact about me : I know nothing about music. I just like to hear Julia using the word 'pharynx.'
@@peterkarargiris4110 i bet you do
So endearing to see & hear that such refinement after suceeding generations, hasn't 'gone out of style.'
Brilliant! Loved the music, your reaction and your analysis. Completely captured my attention throughout. ❤️
I love that you can give this thoughtful, detailed analysis of Sir Tom's vocal technique, while at the same time swooning to it like millions of other women over the past half-century.
I have seen him sing sitting down ,wow! What a value just listening his powerful and well maintained voice….
Tom's voice and your gorgeous hair... I'm overwhelmed!!! great review... thank you.
I’ve come to enjoy and appreciate Tom Jones singing more now than I ever did many years ago. And I love your interpretation of his performance as I do all of your analyses!
So glad I got to see you react to a Tom Jones song 😍 I have an old soul and absolutely love a jazz/crooner type vocalist. Very well sung and loved hearing your take on it!
Heart breaking, in “67” and today as well.
The man is and was a shining star
Great reaction, thanks. Apart from the vocals of Tom, I think the studio orchestra did a fantastic job.
The sound guy and probably a bunch of other studio crew had to have got it right that day, too.
Julia, while there is no discounting of your knowledge and understanding of the vocal mechanism. One of the additional reasons I love your video reactions is seeing your emotional reaction(s) to those certain selections that resonate with you and oh yes! It's obvious and delightful. Thank you once again.
This took me about 30 minutes to watch--time very well spent as I've come away much better informed about singing, Thank you very much Julia Nilon :-)
Same here.
@@robbiec582 After your notification popped up, I decided to listen to this again- it took me ages, with much pausing to listen to her points, then replay what she'd talked about, once again it was about as far from a waste of time as can be. I'm even better informed about what I need to work on, and how to do so.
What she's doing is a little bit like squeezing a quart into a pint pot, but it's well worth the effort to drain the pot- recommend to yourself and others wishing to improve their singing to persevere.
The above is NOT a put-down criticism of Julia Nilon's instructional style, it's more of an appreciation of it :-)
Tom is my favorite male vocalist for sure. I hope you can react to my favorite female vocalist sometime, Karen Carpenter. Her song "Superstar" is a great start. What an incredible voice she had!
I remember hearing Tom Jones in the 60's (yes, I'm that old) and always try to emulate his techniques while singing. The purity of his sound was always a draw for me.
I really admire your side notes you provide.Your judging is fantastic thank you.
He is not known as "Jones the Voice" for nothing , a friend went to see him at Telford 2 weeks ago and said the voice was still as powerfull and emotive .
Love the way you react and analyzed his performance. And you are genuinely beautiful and honest.
Very enjoyable and nice reaction. He's a champ all right!
Oh, and the great backup..
In the classic TV days, singers were featured in many variety shows. Time to bring that genre back.
Reminding me of how old I was when I first heard this, still amazing
I really LOVE your review. Very professional and FINE TUNED.
Love your reactions. This was the yearI was born lol.
Thanks for the work that goes into the reactions. Great job as always.
Thank you for a wonderful reaction Julia. Please feel free to react to more of Sir Tom Jones songs. My late mother really loved hearing him sing. I remember his TV show was always good back in the day. (When I was a kid.)
I love your expertise in breaking down the performance in such technical detail and accuracy. It definitely shed huge light on Jones' abilities and craft. Thanks so much.
Wasn't born when this was out so never heard it b4 but now how it belting out the car every few days lol. Love how you can watch you fall in love with a voice x
Of the many reactors that I follow, you are now my favorite! Outstanding! On a side note...love the hair! Great reaction young lady.
You're my absolutr favourite music reactor and it's not even close. Please keep it going, love from the Netherlands
so far, and for me, it is the best and most complete analysis I have seen, and yet you can still enjoy the mystery of the emotions that a voice conveys. Thank you for your contribution to help us listen better.
Wow, thank you so much for the video and the step-by-step analysis of his performance. As a singer, I've been puzzling over this one for a while. I'll probably watch this a couple dozen times as I work on getting this one down (if ever haha). You've really helped me understand what he's doing, and pointed me in the direction of techniques to work on. I didn't appreciate Sir Tom when I was a child, but now I'd have to say he's in my top two of all time... a singer with all the pieces in the tool box. The fact that he can still hit all the same notes now just goes to show how good his technique is/was.
Wonderful breakdown, you clearly know what goes on behind the voice and the mechanics involved, very knowledgeable.
Probably the best male vocalist from my teens, simply amazing. ❤️🤘🇦🇺
Julia, all your comments no doubt totally on the mark but Tom wouldn't have considered any of that as he sung. He just did it. It just came naturally to him. The power, the delivery, he had it all. This could well be the best recorded 'pop' performance by a male singer .... ever. A great orchestration behind it too.
Probably my favourite song of his. Excellent review as always Julia. Stay beautiful and freakin awesome.
Great singer, with a great song!! Can't wait to see a great analysis!!
Dang, Julia! I need someone to look at me the way you were looking at Tom Jones! Great reaction!
Me and my three brothers and my mom used to watch his show every week. It was right here in Las Vegas Nevada, one of the biggest shows in Vegas.
So cool that you decided to react a much older performance! Your comments on mouth shapes and lip positions were especially interesting😃
As always a great Reaction. I think I see little hearts popping around your head. haha.
I love your analysis and reactions.. especially on this one and Sober by tool... absolutely loved your reactions!!
Sir Tom Jones has been my most favorite singer for over 50 years, and I love all types of music. I can remember when my mom bought his "talk of the town" record albulm I was 8 years old. We use to then watch his TV show. I wanted to personally thank you for reacting to Tom Jones. Many Vocal coaches like yourself seam to be more interested in the opera/juke box/ rock genre. Others that react to his songs are very nice but lack the vocal background. You are the first to take the time to break down his singing style, and explain how he makes those sounds. I would love you to react and comment to more of his songs. Such songs as I WHO HAVE NOTHING, DELIILAH, WITHOUT LOVE, TILL, GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME. There are so many! Thanks again I truly enjoyed it!!!
Thank you for this trip down memory lane. Please more reactions to more of these "oldies".
I was able to hear you better. I do not know if you moved the mic closer or if I just have the volume turned up but thank you either way.
Finally!! I’ve been waiting for this reaction!
love this video by the one and only great..Tom Jones!!!....i very much agree with and have enjoyed your reaction to this video!! As per usual....you have a stunning array of knowledge to impart to your audience! Thank you for that!
p.s....as usual,,,you look very beautiful lol!! Take care and God Bless!!
Ohh lawdy I had no idea that singing was sooo complex. Goes to show he was a master of his craft..I'm thankful for it
Your analysis was fire. Great thoughts
...and this is where my life long love of music and magnificent voices began, Tom Jones began it all for me. I was 10 here ('67), watching Tom then The Tom Jones Show ( '69 - '71) and I was on heaven. Now it's still Tom and many other fantastic voices right up to now with Dimash Kudaibergen. Please react and analyse more Dimash, especially his latest three live performances from the past month (on his channel) Stranger, Fly Away and the heavenly, Ave Maria, Igor Krutoy's new composition. I just love your expressions through this video and I get it, 100%. I aways enjoy your reactions and professional analyses 🌷💟🌷Sydney 🇦🇺
I'm 5-minutes into watching my first video of yours...you've become my FAVORITE CHANNEL! Wow!!! Thank you for you!
That was awesome 👏! Thanks 🙏
I never quite got the knicker throwing at his concerts, but watching you, I think you were leaving knickerless lol x
Your own mastery is also on display here. Thanks for this deeply insightful analysis.
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.
Bless your heart, I hear the folks in charge there in Australia are giving you guys a pretty hard time these days! Hang in there! Love your channel!
Lord have mercy !!! Not only are you BRILLIANT and extremely knowledgeable in your craft AND in this analysis, but you are stunningly beautiful !!! I'm a redhead myself but WOW, just WOW !!! You got it going on !!! I mean that in a great way, and I wish you all the success in the world !!! What a treat this was !!!
Excellent comments. You explained how dynamics works to make a great performance . Ive been playing piano for 20 years and have progressed into using dynamics without realizing exactly how to describe it . Ive been simply considering it being expressive. Now i have a different way of looking at it.
*Julia* Another great reaction I was going thru you catalog and notice you have not done the *The Carpenters / Close To You* Thank you 👻
Excellent, thank you!
Julia, you are lovely and i'm sure its not the first time you've heard this. Great talent you are as well in your analysis. Great work.
His voice sounds very close to this still today. I've watched him as a judge on the voice UK. He's an amazing artist and a great human being😃😃
Wow, I forgot how good this guy sang!
One of my parents had this guy's music.
Even though that type of music genre was on the outs in my youth, it was impossible not to be impressed ...by that old person's type music (as I thought of it back then 😄).
I enjoy watching your physical connection with the lyrics
Who was the drummer? Those fills were Ringo worth.
Amazing work on the chorus, and the camera.
And that Bass, God!
Such high professional sound engineers and balance.
As powerful as this song is listen to him sing Without Love. He is even more powerful
in that song. He hits notes in that song that are just unreal.
It's nice to see someone with so much technical acumen be able to put that on hold and appreciate the simple aesthetics of a song as well.
This was live on Saturday night TV in the UK, The Dusty Springfield Show with about 20 million people watching
Tom is such a fantastic exceptional singer I really have to put him in the top 10 vocalists of the last 50 years. Powerful with feeling with great presence phrasing and tone. That's why he's TOM JONES, Right? Great use of vibrato too. Spot on analysis Julia. *CHEERS*
You’re very good in explaining the art of singing.
Dynamics , slide, bending of notes.
I play keyboard … soothe jazz
Use same approach to my music
Love playing by myself because i love to flow in and out of tempo and so on
Love your explaining .
The 70's Prog band Renaissance, Annie Haslam vocals is worth your attention.
Wonderful and instructive.
You reacted just like your grandmas and their girlfriends reacted...you went all dreamy-eyed. SOL :)
My favorite Tom Jones song. Came for the reaction and was I bowl over, what a beautiful lady you are. Love the red hair and blue/grey eyes
I have to admit, most of that was over my head.
Two things are obvious, even to me:
1. You enjoyed the song.
2. You had no shortage of words in explaining why.
(Many women enjoyed the song but were at a complete loss in attempting to explain why they did).
Tom Jones is easy on the eyes and enjoyable to listen to. (As are you). Great Job, Julia!
Just now, I watched this vocal coach fall in love with Sir Tom Jones! ❤️
Fantastic on so many levels.
Nice review. Hope you get to listen to more of Jones. What a voice. Stay well.
Your hair is so unique. Love your take on this classic.
Richard Dancer
I've watched this video dozens of times and the song has been in my music library for years, so I don't have to say I love it.
YOU!!! Your face should be on a museum of art wall. You have a classic beauty I could look et for hours.
Without question my favorite singer of all-time. Born in 1962, I would fight with my parents to watch his television show when I was 7 and 8 years old. He has been a permanent fixture in my musical life. Simply unequaled. No peers!! None!!
Thanks. I really enjoyed that.
