Hi, you missed that the guitar also tells a whole story on the last solo. It tells how you are in the orient, how hard life is and then explains how tall the tower was by illustrating how long the climb was for the wizard with the ascending chords that kept going a lot longer than expected. Then it tells how wrong things went with the strident notes and the wizard falling to his death with the slides at the end of the solo. That's one thing people miss when listening to metal. A lot of the time, the guitar fills in part of the story not told by the lyrics.

It’s definitely peak Rainbow but Ronnie was in to his groove which went on to new heights with both Black Sabbath and with his Solo band. There are not enough superlatives for this album. The stars really did align for this recording and it’s good to see people much younger than me appreciating it. I’d like to know what you think of it in another 40 years plus 👍

"Stargazer" was the answer of Ricthie Blackmore (the guitarist and leader of Rainbow) to "Kashmir" the big hit by Led Zeppelin (led by the legendary guitarist Jimmy page) in 1975 . It includes the same harmonic minor scale (you can also find in another Rainbow song like Gates of Babylon or Perfect stranger by Deep Purple - after Rictchie Blackmore reintegrate this band) . Harmonic minor scale become then frequently played in the metal genre. If you want a song well crafted with the amazing voice of R.J Dio try "Children of the sea" by Black Sabbath .

Also, the song rainbow 🌈 in the dark was also about Ritchie Blackmore. Ritchie really put Ronnie thru hell personally. Ritchie was the wizard his Idle, especially when he opened up for Deep Purple. He was in Elf opening up for the greatest band in the world at the time. It had to hurt when Ritchie wanted him out of the band.

@@InterestingStuff888 ok you watch the movie first before presuming and Ronnie said the song was partly inspired by a movie he loved as a teenager called.... oh look "The Silver Chalice". And there is a quote from Cozy Powell where he confirms this in a book I have about Rainbow. Maybe do some research instead of pretending you know something when in actuality you know sweet FA. Were you even around in '76?
As a starter: "The Silver Chalice". Here's the main scene, a wizard (Jack Palance) trying' to fly from the top of a tower built by slaves... and failing.

Artists in the 60's and 70's had unbelievable freedom to create what they wanted. The current era is a void of creativity by comparison because now artists have to chase the like, the views, the numbers and that means dumbing down their production to be more accessible. There is no way that an artist could force a record company to release something like Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" today.

It would be silly to call myself a Dio or Rainbow fan. I didn't discover them, really, until I was in college. My metal roots start with Iron Maiden. However, I think this album is the greatest metal album of all time. I like rock music too and rather study it. Rainbow Rising is like the London Calling of metal music. There is this thru-way from it where you can tell how metal got there as well as where it went since, just like London Calling does with rock. Rainbow Rising is a revelation of an album and anyone who even remotely likes metal or hard rock music need to be familiar with it. It is as important a metal record as I have ever heard.

I think Stargazer by Rainbow is about building the pyramids. If you buy in to the Ancient Aliens tv show, which sounds nuts but i give it SOME credence, all the pyramids around the earth were built by human labor, alien supervisors, and when they were all aligned geographically by latitudinal lines they created a type of energy- laser, magnetism, maybe a wormhole- by which the aliens would propel their ships into space. In the song, an accident causes the spaceship to crash, alien (the "wizard") dies, all go home,
bummer. I believe the song is about this true folklore. Even if its not true, the folklore exists amongst native peoples who say their ancestors built pyramids and gods came down on flaming chariots, etc. A few clues in the song: the title, Stargazer. This wasnt a tower for a wizard to jump off & fly. Even the slaves built it thinking of the stars, even hoping they could go to- Dio sings, "When do we leave?" Again, not a tower for a one-off jump. He also sings, "Where is your star? Is it far?" Etc I could continue but you get the idea. If you watch the pyramid episodes of Ancient Aliens, you might believe this is a true story, like I kind of do. Kind of. Its possible. Anyway I think its an interesting angle to the whole thing, though I'm not sure you want to delve that deep into the lyrics of one song! But Dio's been a favorite of mine forever (i saw him many times in the 1970s & 80s) plus I'm a new subscriber so I wrote this looong comment. Will keep them shorter in the future. Thanks! Also, for some really cool guitar-vocal interplay, try out REO Speedwagon's live, You Get What You Play For album from the 70s(when they rocked like a you know what.) Its just good ol rock n roll, not metal, but the song "157 Riverside Avenue" has some of the best, cleanest, unbelievable guitar you'll ever hear. With the singer getting scatty, they have a back-and-forth "conversation" that is truly unique. Thats hard to do! Check it out for yourself, even if you don't do a first time listen reaction thing. Anyway. Thanks again, sorry for rambling on, Andy

If you liked this slice of '70's Epicness, then you have to try 'Kashmir,' by Led Zeppelin, which,in my opinion,is the only song of this type that surpasses 'Stargazer'!
Led Zeppelin wrote many great songs, but nothing comes close to this nine minutes of Bombastic Greatness, complete with a Riff to die for!

i see it more as prog-rock than modern metal, i mean it's somewhat similar to Led Zeppelin, He has such a great voice. I think he sang in J.C. Superstar, unless that was the Deep Purple singer, yes, the DP singer sang Getsemane on the record but was not in the movie itself or something. Well another comment off topic. So while i'm at it i'll post the list of bands that played at the Rainbow Theatre, which is unrelated to the band Rainbow, : Focus, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Queen, Elton John, The Bee Gees

Another band with a niche following and very similar in feel from the same time-frame was Trapeze. If you haven't heard them you may want to give them a try. Coast to Coast and Medusa are two of their best for completely different reasons.

Congratulations on a great review / reaction on a piece of music that is considered an all-time classic. If you like the fusion of rock/metal with orchestral music then I think you'd love dipping your toes into a sub-genre called Symphonic Metal. One of the prime movers in this is a band from Finland called Nightwish. They've been around for over 20 years now, and you'll see people reacting to their songs all over RUclips (so no risk of copyright shenanigan, right?) Can I suggest you start where most people get their introduction to this band, with a live recording from the Wacken Open Air festival in 2013, and listen to "Ghost love Score". You can then try out other songs like "Poet and the Pendulum", (live at Wembley) "I Want My Tears Back" (live in Buenos Aires) "Phantom of the Opera" (live - End of an Era tour) and "The Greatest Show on Earth" (Live in Tampere, Finland) ruclips.net/video/47e_961OQWE/видео.html

Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie Dio basically invented the sub genre of neo classical rock/metal. Ritchie was my hero and all time favorite guitarist. A legend in Black. Cozy Powell is maybe the greatest rock drummer in history. His snare drum work is legendary.
Your brother is correct it is in E minor for the most part.
To hear a more musical complex Rainbow song, check out "The Gates of Babylon" from the Rainbow record Long Live Rock and Roll.

Here's a little tidbit to add to your historical possibilities.
I've enjoyed this song for many years. Dio, Blackmore, and all the members of Rainbow are legends. A few years back I saw this documentary on the History channel and I immediately wondered if this was the basis for this song. Just food for thought. I have also included the Wiki link.
In the 9th century engineer Abbas Ibn Firnas is considered to be the first human to fly with the help of a pair of wings built by silk, wood and real feathers.
*Armen Firman is the Latinized name of Abbas Ibn Firnas. "According to some secondary sources, about 20 years before Ibn Firnas attempted to fly he may have witnessed Firman as he wrapped himself in a loose cloak stiffened with wooden struts and jumped from a tower in Córdoba, intending to use the garment as wings on which he could glide. The alleged attempt at flight was unsuccessful, but the garment slowed his fall enough that he only sustained minor injuries."

I'm an amateur drummer myself, so... Yeah. Cozy Powell killed that shit. The only "better" drum intro to a heavy rock/metal/pop song is the opening to WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS by Led Zeppelin/John Bonham and that's more about the percussive groove than the technicality. FIREBALL by Deep Purple/Ian Paice and PAINKILLER by Judas Priest/Scott Travis are kinda nice, too. I also like EXCITER. Again by Judas Priest but with Les Binks on the skins back in the '70's.

Dio is known as one of the foundational metal singers of all time (RIP Dio). He had the ability to garner command of the audience with his strong presence, and powerful open-throated vocal technique. The people in 80s bands used to call him Pop. He was well respected and a gentle soul. Richie Blackmore's legendary talent still inspires musicians to this day. I have to say that he was tough to work with (an a$$, to be gentle). Lmao!! Great review.

Francis, You appreciated one of the all time classics, and that is commendable for a 'non-metal head'. It really has stood the test of time - nearly 50 years now. From a vocal point of view, could I politely recommend you watch this fantastic review by the legend / opera diva / vocal coach that is Elizabeth Zharoff - AKA The Charismatic Voice. ruclips.net/video/eR8hwLQIiFw/видео.html
This explains his unbelievable vocal ability and I understood it so much better afterwards.
Kudos to you. Perhaps try something from later in Dio's career - Falling Off The edge Of The World (with Black Sabbath) or perhaps The Last In Line (with his own band, Dio). Interested to see what your next choice will be. 🤓 (Oh - and subbed)
