I have the same model (or close to it) with the carbon fiber shaft and Line IQ. I’ve been very impressed with the power and the ease of not having to mess around with mixing fuel. One thing I’m not a fan of, though, is the Line IQ. The sensor (or whatever voodoo magic makes the line know when to advance), lets the line get far too short for my liking before letting out more line. At first blush this seems like not a big deal….just move in a little closer, right? Ah, but here’s the kicker….you’re not only losing reach, I believe that you’re also losing SPEED. The tip of 16 inches of line is moving much faster than the tip of 7 inches of line. More speed at impact means more POWER. It’s simple physics. You can tell the difference between how much more power it seems to have when the line is fully extended than when it’s worn down to its shortest point. And the difference is significant. And there’s no way to advance it yourself, you just have to wait until the Line IQ decides to give you more line. I find myself feeling frustrated with the performance. Then wham, all of a sudden you get more line and it’s tearing through the thickest grass like a champ again. Personally, I’d rather control this myself. So after using it for a full season last summer, I got annoyed with it and swapped it out for an Ego bump head. It was an easy swap. I’m much more pleased with the consistency of the performance now. I suspect I’ll go through a little more line this way, but I think it’s a much better tool now. And the power load (which I love) still works the same. Just my observation
@@ut1004bp I had a bunch of plain string from my previous trimmer but the power load feature doesn’t seem to engage properly with it and I have trouble reloading. So I bought a spool of .95 twisted line and that loads fine, no problem. I think the plain string is just a little too stiff and the head just won’t grab it properly. The twisted line is more flexy. Still more satisfied with the bump head. I don’t think it was an issue of the Line IQ auto feed not working properly….I think it works exactly as designed. I just don’t like how short it actually gets before it feeds out. It’s like working with two different trimmers, and you never know what moment it will suddenly feed out. I prefer controlling that myself.
I had no trouble loading round string but aleways over fed line with IQ no matter what string I used. I took it back to the store for a refund. Customer service sucks!!!
EGO nailed it with this trimmer! It's light, balanced, and has plenty of trimming power. No more bumping and I love the Line IQ feature. Just like in your video, I was able to keep trimming without stopping. I kept feeling the need to "bump" the trimmer when the line got low, but the trimmer adjusted to the perfect length each time. Even in the vertical position the line would advance. I love the new trigger safety as its smooth and quick. I haven't had the need to load more line, so I haven't tried the autoload feature yet. This is by far the best trimmer I've ever purchased!!
@@evwonder1889 I told you the head was unbalanced. When the string hits grass or weeds it jolts the head of the Weedwhacker and has no torque to spin back up again that is just the nature of having a direct drive with no clutch in that motor so there is nothing holding back the pressure to the main drive. Trust me I know what I’m talking about. I didn’t Say it sucks. For a homeowner who doesn’t know what they’re doing I guess it’s fine.
Having a line sensor is such a great improvement over previous methods of auto feed. Black and Decker uses a centrifugal method, which ultimately fails, and feeds line constantly, and a reel lasts only for minutes. EGO rocks! If EGO ever goes public, I would buy their stock.
Dean, i have emailed them suggesting that same idea. they should go public, id buy their stock at 50 bucks. I have faith in their product as all my mowing equipment is ego
I used mine lightly for edging my small yard maybe ten times before the line iq and auto feed stopped working, it just shoots line out one side now , can’t even manually wind and use now
I purchased one yesterday. I took the blade cover off. Pro's for me . Battery 🔋 last forever I purchased the $299 so it's a bigger battery. Con's can't get a precision cut and edging is very difficult. So I'll continue using my gas trimmer to edge. I trimmed every bit of 30 to 35 or more on one cell . Ego got it down on the battery life.... But need to work on the precision cutting and edging... I give it a 8.5
The best damn trimmer I've ever used. Solid battery life, I have trhe 4AH battery and carbon shaft...Easiest I've ever used, and will NEVER go to another trimmer. The line IQ and easy load for the line are gamechangers, as well as the battery life and adjusttability! Bravo EGO, it's a gamechanger.
IQ on mine over fed, used fourteen feet of line in less than ten minutes. Called customer support , they said take it ti Lowes where I bought it. I took it to Lowes and returned it for a refund!! Poor customer service and even worse design for the IQ !!!
Thank you for the review. The strap actually is included in my unit when purchased as a kit with the 4.0Ah battery and the new 320W low profile charger. Coming from Black & Decker's cordless trimmer I bought the EGO carbon fiber unit with PowerLoad first few years ago and loved it even though it was too long for my height. Six month later, I bought the multi-head for multiple tools and also got the trimmer thinking of replacing the carbon fiber unit; however, this combination is heavy and uncomfortable to use especially it spins counter-clockwise that I have to stand on the right side of the trimmer and use the left hand to hold the trigger to avoid debris. When I saw the introducing of this new EGO 16" telescope carbon fiber with both PowerLoad and Line IQ I was excited. I have been missing the AFS (Automatic Fee Spool) feature on the Black & Decker trimer since I got the EGO. I got this new trimmer last week, assembled it and the ergonomic and weight balance fits perfectly for me (though I still miss the metal guard that Black & Decker puts on their trimmer to prevent trimmer line damage) so, both the carbon fiber and the multi-head trimmer attachment are now listed for sale 😉
Just bought one as I’ve been switching to battery powered mainly due to I don’t like storing gas cans in my shed, I am loving all of the ego products I’ve bought thus far, works great cleans up easily, no oil or gas!!! It’s great!
I bought one last week and used it for the first time this weekend. Before this, I had a dedicated Sthil edger and Echo string trimmer. I used the EGO for edging, trimming, and basically as a lawn mower for the back yard which doesn't have grass. Still getting used to the LineIQ. When it feeds more line, there's a bit of a jerk to one side, which can be an issue if you're trimming in a tight area or if you want precision. I finished the yard with probably about 40% of battery capacity remaining. Overall, it does a great job and I'm highly considering having it replace my gas powered edger and trimmer. I will say the batteries are expensive, so long-term, you may not be saving much money compared to a string trimmer. But also consider the cost of tune-ups and adjustments on your gas trimmer, as well as gas storage.
I just bought one and to then find out the battery, though new, was two years old already.. I wasn't pleased..I called EGO, waited 30 minutes, and to find out they didn't seem to think there was an issue. I haven't used it yet, but been thinking about taking it back to make a point.. as batteries are like tires, degrade just sitting on the shelf,
I read on Lowe's site that you can't use this as an edger because the string will continue to feed out and the person said there was 1 foot sections of string being cut off when he tried to edge with it. I see you were using it to edge. Have you had a problem with the string feeding?
I really like that EGO puts spring loaded terminal protector cover that covers the terminals when the battery is ejected on this unit. Excellent attention to detail. I wonder if EGO has build little brushes to clean the terminals every time the battery is been ejected or... maybe next model? 😉
4 out of 5 stars for me for my ST1623T... The sight line while looking down at the head for edging is very bad. Causes some very uneven cuts because the IQ head is a bit large and you can't see exactly where the line is cutting. My little Echo gas trimmer's string guard is cutaway so you can see what you are doing easily. EGO needs to make another string guard for this model for sure.
Is the low speed slow enough that it doesn't break the line if it went up again something with a sharp corner or thin wire fencing? I "feather" the trigger of our OG trimmer but it kind of hard to get that ideal speed and I have to do it so much that it would be nice to have a setting that automatically does this for me.
I wonder why they didn't make it have a variable speed trigger. I use the variable speed trigger on my Kobalt 80V trimmer all the time. It has high and low settings but the trigger is also variable speed. I came here to find out how this Line IQ feature works, and it looks like it could be very useful. I feel like I waste so much line bumping.
@@zaineridling That is good to know. Though I just read your post about how line IQ only extends to the longest side, and I wonder if that would be a problem for me.
IT DOES WORK WITHOUT THE GUARD! However, if you remove the guard, it will extend the line but only so far. You will need to carry a small wirecutter to trim your line back. This Line-IQ feature did not work as I expected. You only get 5.25" of line on each side, because the (5-inch) trimmer head is included in the 16-inch width. Worse, Line-IQ only extends/cuts to the longest side of string. So, if one side is longer than the other, it's going to extend to the longest side every time, leaving the other side short. Also, Line-IQ has a mind of its own, meaning it will unreel more line when it's ready; there's nothing you can do to manually unreel more line. You just have to wait on it. This was a source of frustration, and wasted my time. I LOVE EGO, but the trimmer is a tool for which I need as much control as possible. For now, I'm back to my model 1521S (2021).
Thanks for explaining this. I was just at Lowes looking for this one the 16", but I guess I'll get the 1521 since there is no way to manually feed more line and I don't have patience to wait .. thanks for the comment.
Yep, biggest issue so far. Since line iq is software controlled, you're at mercy for whenever it decides to spit out more line. In my case, specifically annoying as all hell. As i was doing my fence, the line got down to 2 inches each side, yet....5 mins of running the motor, still trying to cut, stopping/starting, it still refused to spit line out. Resulting in a very suboptimal job and cut. Really disappointing. A very easy and incredible way to fix it (and future proof) is to just add another button by the speed setting that automatically tells the software on the trimmer to spit out more line on demand. Because clearly the line 'iq' still got teething issues.
If the power load feature breaks can you do it manually? Which direction does the head spin? I saw two speeds but does it still have variable throttle speed?
I just bought it and I don’t like it, I’m used to commercial trimmers with no guard and running the string out as long as I want it. I feel like my hands a tied behind my back. I need a regular bump head.
I have the EGO line trimmer with the carbon fiber shaft but I have to bump the head to adjust the line which does not work well . Is it possible to replace the head with the IQ head?
Is there any way to advance the line when the IQ fails to. My line just advances when I lease expect it. Works then for a few minutes til line get so short that it hardly cuts. No way to advance line. It is great one minute then the most unusable weed trimmer I have ever seen. Help.
The IQ system on mine is very annoying It doesn't feed until the lines are less than 3" in length, and then it feeds up to 12 inches resulting in big chunks of wasted line laying around when the excess is cut off. It spends the vast majority of cutting time with only ~3" of line sticking out. I would much rather just bump feed, but EGO tells me you can't convert from IQ to bump feeding.
$299 at Lowes with the charger and batt. No bare tool yet (st1620t). Hooever, bare tool is going to sell for $219 so you are better off payng teh $80 for the battery and charger as the 4ah battery is worth more than $80
Hey guys I’m having an issue with the Line IQ feature and I’ve heard it from several people. When using the trimmer in areas that I am going to be eating up more string, the new string does not feed properly at all, it lets me get down to about 3-4 inches and stays there for a solid 3 minutes before finally feeding another 4 inches of line out. I am trying to decide if this is something that they just haven’t figured out yet with the feature or if I have a bad sensor. To give some perspective, when I am edging with the trimmer near the road, the trimmer only replaces my quickly disappearing string every 5 minutes or so, and at that point I am all but rubbing the head on the road trying to keep trimming while I wait for it to feed. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me! Thanks!
I am having the same problem when I started to use black Vortex Professional Trimmer Line. It seams to almost fuse together in spots from the friction sometimes. When using it in my now seized up gas Husky, I could hand wind it pretty tight and snagging on the spool was minimal. I am curious if the line feed sensor on my Ego ST1623T is optical and just does not see the black line.
I see your video on the trimmer is a couple years old and I am now considering this trimmer because I suck at reloading the string. How has this trimmer held up the last couple years please?
I wonder if the people who are having issues with the string not advancing properly or using a different size or brand of string? The unit is designed to sense the centrifugal force of the ego trimmer string and somebody uses something that is a different weight or thickness it could possibly change how the sensor automatically feeds the line.
I looked for this at Lowes and the package with battery and charger is listed at $499 which seems way too much for a trimmer for a small property. Not sure if the $299 price is American????
I was thinking about that as well; however, after a close study the Line IQ head and my current carbon fiber PowerLoad head I would say that EGO did a good job to make sure it is quiet complicated to swap the head out even though the motor housing are the same size. For the price differences, it would be more economical and require less effort for me to sell my current carbon fiber unit after a thorough clean up with a new trimer line as well as selling the new 4.0Ah battery and the 320W charger from the Line IQ kit than tinker my current unit with new head and new deeper protective cover. It was a tempting thought; however, I still need the telescopic feature as well even if I am able to replace the head. I have retrofitted LM2102SP and LM2142SP into Select Cut as well as swapping out the rubber auger with a metal auger on single stage units; however, I am going to pass this one on. Do share if you are able to retrofit your current trimmer with the Line IQ though. 👍
Can this trimmer come with 4ah battery or typical 2.5ah? Also, what's the difference between 15in and 16in? And can I use commercial strings on this because I have strings of my own I bought from lowes?
Hello im ortistic and epileptic and have learning difficultys ive just ordered a ego i just spent £449 British pounds on won it hasn't arrived yet will i regret spending that money on won or was it worth it ? Please can I have a genuine non payed for reply and honest thoughts please thank you
Very nice, but i have the previous EGO that suffer from all the problems that IQ solve, can i have just the head ? Elseway i'm ready to toss my actual EGO as the bump load works 1 out of 10, every 10 mins. Every time i clean my head, i get 20 mins of "great" usage, before it start to have problems. I want a new head or a new trimmer. But i'm scared to buy EGO again, but this seems cool.
@@enitalp Seriously, every trimmer I have ever used have problems with bumping and getting the string to advance. I personally look forward to trying this bumpless trimmer. I am tired of my Ryobi not cutting as good as they advertised and having to bump the head multiple times to get the string to advance far enough to cut itself. Plus the loading! I never want to go back to trying to take the heads apart and pulling out spools without losing springs and washers just to have to try to wind line around them and then reverse the process..
Meh, I have the one with Line IQ for a whopping $330. Sure, my $76 B & D 40v Battery trimmer is annoying to re-spool, but if cost/value is a factor, go with B & D. It is still running well after 10 years, my EGO died after 1 year.
I just bought one but haven't tried it yet. I wonder if it's sensitive to which kind of line it will accept both with the powerload feature and the LineIQ feature. Obviously the line has to be 0.095 but can i use all kinds of shapes and brands of line?
I bought one of these trimmers, do not expect to make nice even cut with this machine. The head isvery unbalanced with this fancy loading and reloading system

For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.

I was wondering does it get clogged like the other ego power loading ones and is it possible to fix? I'm interested in getting one.
If the power load feature breaks can you do it manually? Which direction does the head spin? I saw two speeds but does it still have variable throttle speed?
Yes it has variable speed in high and low.
Help.
Mine fed all the time so I took it back for a refund!!!
Same, exactly, disappointing.
$299 at Lowes with the charger and batt. No bare tool yet (st1620t). Hooever, bare tool is going to sell for $219 so you are better off payng teh $80 for the battery and charger as the 4ah battery is worth more than $80
So it is cheaper to buy the kit and sell the battery and the charger privately to cut down the cost if you don't need the battery and charger.
@@Jeo-What Definitly better to sell if you don't need it.
How long do I charge the battery for the first time? My new trimmer didn't come with instructions or the hex screw!
Though it comes with the twisted .95 string, I've heard that the auto feed works better with .95 plain string.. did you try the plain?
Awesome concise review! Thank you!
Great review! I’m hopeful that the new new 2022 Ego tools will be in Australia soon so I’ll be picking this new trimmer and the new 765 blower up.
Let's see how it holds up in the long run, especially when all the dirt and debris gets in there
I see your video on the trimmer is a couple years old and I am now considering this trimmer because I suck at reloading the string.
Though it comes with the "twisted" .95 string, I've heard that the auto feed works better with .95 plain string.
Can you install a brush cutting blade on this new 16 inch Line IQ trimmer?
what is the max size of battery you can use on this trimmer?
I looked for this at Lowes and the package with battery and charger is listed at $499 which seems way too much for a trimmer for a small property. Not sure if the $299 price is American????
I think I paid $329 American.
Anyway to adapt the line iq to my existing ego trimmer?
Any videos on when it won't self feed anymore?
Though it comes with the twisted .95 string, I've heard that the auto feed works better with .95 plain string.
What’s the model number? There are several trimmers on the EGO website.
Please can I have a genuine non payed for reply and honest thoughts please thank you
No complaints but it would be nice that these upgrades could be used with the ego multi tool.
So it works like every other bump head trimmer...
@@Margalus seriously ? was ready to.buy a gas sthil. Will go ego again
I bought the Mower last fall and I'm planning on getting the weed eater next.
What is the best line to use with this trimmer . Tyvm
is the line IQ worth it over the previous model if you were buying today?
Wondering the same thing. Some reviews say it’s not reliable
Mine doesn’t extend out any further than 4.5 inches on each side.
hey, whats the name of this product for EU customers? can't find it
Thanks
Meh, I have the one with Line IQ for a whopping $330. Sure, my $76 B & D 40v Battery trimmer is annoying to re-spool, but if cost/value is a factor, go with B & D. It is still running well after 10 years, my EGO died after 1 year.
Can I use the 7.5ah battery from my mower?
Is this the best? Is their 1 better?
Is it possible to change head to a brush cutter type blade like the husqvarna tri blade metal ?
I just bought one but haven't tried it yet. I wonder if it's sensitive to which kind of line it will accept both with the powerload feature and the LineIQ feature. Obviously the line has to be 0.095 but can i use all kinds of shapes and brands of line?
I am trying 0.095 black Vortex Professional Trimmer Line and having difficulty in getting it to advance line out.
@@jeffcady284 Was it difficult to get it in the trimmer and what shape is the string id i may ask?
Thank you for this great review!
Will this hold the 7.5 ah battery?
plugged in charger blinked red/green. then nothing. put battery on charger. nothing!!!!!
Just bought this one……. Hope it lives up to the hype.
Where can I buy the tether accessory (2:35)?
I'd like to know also, anyone?
Just the idea of electric for these things is so nice. No oil and gas to mess around with.
Got that right!
Hello, Excellant Review. Will the 4amp Battery fit in the EGO Chainsaw?
Yes, all EGO batteries fit all EGO equipment.
I’m sold . Thank you
How long will it run on full charge for the 56v battery?
I get around 45 minutes in very thick weeds.
Great video! Thx
Can I run a 5mah battery from the blower?
Yep, all EGO batteries work in all EGO tools.
Love it so far.
Best video I have watched
Thank you 👍
I bought one of these trimmers, do not expect to make nice even cut with this machine. The head isvery unbalanced with this fancy loading and reloading system
Is it heavy?
I have an old echo gas power. I held this display model in Lowes and could not tell a significant difference. So, it's not light.
I want one so bad
Can you look at the new ryobi trimmers
Looks sturdy.
How much does the ego string trimmer cost
$299 including batt and charger at lowes. There are cheaper versions that do not incloude the line IQ feature.
What a dumb question...
Look it up,genius.
I’ve had terrible luck with ego batteries. Thinking of dumping them for Milwaukee or Dewalt.
I’m hearing this a lot.
i want to buy

the best lol i paid 300 dollars the head failed the battery has failed over priced crap
Can't wait to upgrade lol
9.7 …….wowweee!!
Have been trying to get this for three qeeks
when sand/dirt gets in the inertia cassett & spring it jams and suddenly releases a foot of line,COMMERCIAL OPERATORS DO NOT BUY!!
bought one three months ago, POS , battery is fully charged and loses power, string autofeed is horrible. RUN AWAY. do not recommend this to anyone. Customer service is a nightmare, they want you to register it and they dont even have that model to register online. Waste of time and money.
Damn, I was just about to go buy one today lol.

Too much innuendo…..giggity giggity
I hate this guy for not explaining anything in this video
