Srilanka had defeated Australia in the final to pick up it's first world cup
It looked like the struggle that had ensued between David and goliath had come to a stop at that point
a struggle that had started in 1995
with Muralitharan being no balled out of a game, due to his suspicious action.

But as soon as Murli retired ICC changed the deformity rule to No deformity in elbow allowed with in two months. Shoaib Malik became ineligible because of that and had to remodel his action to be allowed to bowl again.
