I've read books on motivation that didn't come close to the wisdom contained within this post. "Don't let one person steal your dream" is some of the best advice anyone could give to another.👍

Thanks Joel. I'm a retired 70 year old female ex-school teacher. Two years ago I started a photography business without knowing much about the business of photography. I started photography while still teaching little kids, taking candids of them. I have since moved into intimate landscapes and macro. I've just started to put myself out there and I've survived a couple minor rejections. I really appreciate your encouragement. It's difficult to stay positive in this age when no one is having art shows, going to galleries, etc. And, yes, I think I have at least ten years left!

When I'm rejected I keep moving forward, but I also think about other people I know who are interested in photography but will never make it to the point I'm at right now. So I'm grateful for the rejection, knowing I will still keep trying 😊

Thank-you Joel, for another sagely, and well-done production! No one has stolen my dream, ... although there a few pooh-stains, here and there, from 'those people' who tried. 😒

Such a great video and advice. I totally agree. I've been doing photography for 10 years this year. People thought it was just a hobby and that I would end up working where my dad was till I retire. I took a leap of faith and joined a small company in the warehouse just to get my foot in cus I knew they had a photography side and I now do video and photos for this company and continue getting paid work on the side and yup. It took 10 years and I'm not done yet. I plan on getting to the top like you Joel. You're a true inspiration

Wise words indeed, inspirational and felt. There's doubt coming from the video. Is this about getting to the top, or about doing what you love? The two things seem to get a bit confused here. Caring about the top has nothing to do with the love for the process: the game theory shows it quite well. Finally, pursuing a goal "no matter what" is shared by Hitler, Stalin, mad people. We better maintain awareness in the process. The real struggle is in finding an equilibrium: be a good person, do what you love, make a living, give back

    • @joelgrimes
      @joelgrimes  2 года назад +1

nicely said. My point is more pursuing a goal and doing the steps necessary to actually achieve that goal

Great video. will watch this again. Lots of good insight.
    Photography is still my passion.
You, yourself can be your worst critic.
The people who are critical of your work and try to get you to give up / quit are:
    1. Not happy with themselves.
    2. Jealous of the work you are doing because :
    (a) they havent done what you do
    (b) you are actually better than them, and they see a threat to their success.
    3. Have absolutely no idea about photography
    Positive Critics
    1. Critical of your work, but at the same time are trying to get you to push yourself further. It is constructive and harsh because they do have knowledge of what you are doing. They've been in your shoes. They can see the potential. Could be an instructor/ mentor or someone youve asked to look at your work.

What it all boils down to is that sooner or later the question is, 'Do I want to make money from my passionate obsession and if so, how much ?'. Do you see yourself making a living from it or is just as a nice side income. Then ,after some uncomfortable introspection , ask youself 'Would I be a good businessman over a good photographer' ? Do I realise I run the risk of starting to hate my passion when I don't seem to be able to make enough money to make ends meet. And end up with a frustrated passion that I once loved to bits ?

Those photos are very different than a regular professional image: I Ps expressed a few that looks similar to the style, I love those photos but wondered if other people like the artistic look I begin to adapt: the philosophy in this video says to me: Come on its really going to get noticed people are going to love them!

Unfortunately, we all don't start on the level field. Some teenagers RUclips channels are Netflix quality. Parents hiring production companies to film teenage girl dancing videos with supporting dancers etc.
Or if you want to become a racing driver you better be from a rich family because your hobby going to cost a little fortune

That’s fair but focusing on what one doesn’t have that others do, I’ve always focused on being my best with what I have. Regardless of what’s going on around me. There is high quality content that has money behind it that never goes anywhere too
